Regard your mower as a piece of power equip- ment, and teach this regard to all who operate the equipment. 2. Never allow children or young teen-agers to operate a power mower. 3. Be sure you know how to stop the mower and en- gine at a moment's notice. 4. Instruct children to keep away from the area of operation of the mower at all times. PREPARATION 1.- Before starting operation, clear the entire lawn area of all debris that could catch on to or be thrown by the blade. 2. Plan the cutting operation so it is not necessary to pull the mower rearward towards you, partic- ularly on a downgrade. 3. When you mow on rough terrain or in high grass or weeds, the blade should be set at the highest cutting point to minimize debris being ejected from the mower. 4. Unless there is very good artificial light, mow only during the daylight. 5. Do not operate power mowers in wet grass, which clogs the mower and increases the danger of your slipping and possibly coming into contact with the blade. 6. Fill gasoline-driven mowers outdoors. Avoid spill- ing gasoline and don't fill the tank while engine is running or while you are smoking. 7. Don't mow when barefoot or wearing open sandals. Provide some protection by means of long, heavy denim trousers and brogues. If you have safety shoes, wear them. 8. Mower shields should never be removed. OPERATION 1. Give complete and undivided attention to the job at hand. 2. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, particularly small children. 3. Don't start the motor or engine and blade until you are ready to start mowing. Stop the engine whenever you leave the mower. 4. Don't overspeed the engine. Excessive cutting speed or tampering with the governor can be dangerous. Operate the engine at the slowest speed which will cut satisfactorily. POWER LAWN TOOL USERS 10. 11. Start the mower carefully. Stand firmly, with your feet away from the blade. Be sure the mower will not tip or roll during the starting operation. If the mower handle has a safety latch to hold it in normal operating position, keep it engaged dur- ing the operation. Keep in step with the mower. Do not lag behind or let it pull you so you will not be in full com- mand of the machine. Do not run. Control the direction of the mower by hand pres- sure on the handle, not by foot pressure on the mower housing. When operating over uneven terrain and slopes, use extreme care and make sure of solid and firm footing at all times. Exercise special care whén mowing around objects to prevent the blades from striking them andnever deliberately mow over any object. Stop operation when another person approaches. Do not pass or stand on the grass-discharge side of the mower with the engine running. MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE Follow implicitly the manufacturer's recommen- dations for maintenance. Have a competent serviceman make a thorough inspection of the mower at least once a year. Never adjust the mower or change attachments until the engine has been turned off andthe spark- plug wire disconnected. Otherwise it is possible that the engine could start while making an ad- justment or repair. If carburetor adjustment is necessary, stand to one side and keep feet and hands in the clear while making adjustments. Keep engines free from accumulations of grass, leaves, or excessive grease. An accumulation of these combustible materials may result in a fire. Store gasoline in safe container. Store the con- tainer in a cool, dry place, not in the house or near heating appliances. Keep the mower and fuel container in locked storage to prevent children from playing and tampering with them. Maximum mowing results and safety can only be expected if the mower is maintained and operat- ed correctly. Gasoline powered equipment or fuel containers should not be stored in basement or any closed area where heating or heat appliances or open pilot lights are present, unless fuel is completely drained from power equipment and fuel containers. de. . и THROTTLE CONTROL COLLAR, @ IE " . $ Пн . TRACTION CLUTCH LEVER (See Figure 8) Engagement of the clutch to place mower in motion is controlled by the traction clutch lever on the left hand side of the handle. Pushing the lever forward, or away from the operator, engages the clutch for forward movement. "THROTTLE CONTROL “ COLLAR TRACTION CLUTCH LEVER <— CLUTCH ROD * THROTTLE WIRE Figure 8. CHOKE-RUN STOP LEVER This lever, mounted on the rear of the fuel tank, is used to set the choke for starting and running the engine and also stops the engine by shorting out the magneto. REEL CLUTCH LEVER Rotation of the cutting reel is controlled by the reel clutch lever located in a slot on the left hand side of the mower. Pulling the lever to the rear applies tension to the belts which engage reel pulley. Have clutch disengaged when mower is being transportedto avoid possible accidents and damage to reel and bedknife. Always disengage the reel clutch when driveways, walks, or such places where stone or other objects may become lodged in reel. NOTE Reel clutch lever should be in disengaged -or forward position when starting engine. RUNNING YOUR MOWER The throttle control collar governs the speed of the mower engine and can be set at any desired speed for your cutting conditions. It is recommended that the engine be run at 1/2 to 3/4 maximum speed for the first 2 to 3 hours of operation. After this use 3/4 open throttle for average cutting. Use full throt- tle only for heavy cutting. WARNING | DO NOT LET ENGINE OPERATE AT IDLE SPEED SETTING FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. CUTTING YOUR LAWN With the engine warmed up and operating properly, pull the reel clutch lever (on left hand side of mower) to the rear to start the reel in motion. Push forward on the traction clutch lever until it snaps in and the mower will move forward. Guide mower by means of the handle to cut your lawn with very little effort on your part. To stop move traction clutch lever to the rear. When mowing is completed or the engine is to be shut off, push the reel clutch lever all the way forward and move the traction clutch lever to the neutral (or disengage) position. If an obstruction is caught in the cutting unit during operation, im- mediately release the traction and reel clutches to disengage the power. Stop the engine as a safety precaution. Remove obstruction before proceeding with operation of mower. CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT 1. The recommended cutting height range for this mower is 5/16 inch to 1-1/2 inches. Cutting heights up to 2-1/2 inches can be obtained with guide wheels if desired when these lawn conditions exist: Rough terrain, extreme dryness or when long grass may require a double cutting. 2. Set mower on a level surface. Loosen two hex nuts securing the guide wheel or roller brackets to each side frame. 3. Cutting height is adjusted by moving the guide wheel or roller brackets on the side frames (See Figures 2 and 3). Moving the brackets forward raises the cutting height. Moving the brackets to the rear lowers the cutting height. The notches on the side frames and in the brackets are guide marks to set each guide wheel to the same height. Adjust roller on level ground only. 4, Measure the distance from the floor to the top edge of the bed knife for cutting height desired. 5. Tighten the four hex nuts securely to hold the height setting. Be sure screws are spread as far apart as possible in slots before nuts are tight- ened, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. NOTE The roller tube contains approximately one quart of oil; therefore, place a large enough pan under the assembly to catch this oil when disassembling. 5. Loosen (2) set screws at upper end of roller and unscrew end cap counterclockwise. Hold the lower end cap to prevent the shaft from turning. 6. Remove shaft supporting device (installed in Step No. 4) and remove shaft by tapping the upper end with a soft-headed hammer. 7. Remove and cleanse thoroughly the upper and lower bearing cups and cones. (Replace if worn). 8. Reinstall bearings and cups in tube and prepack the exposed sides of the bearings with a good grade of pressure gun grease. Install new upper and lower seals and reassemble the roller re- versing steps one, two, and three. NOTE Before installing top end cap, pour in one quart of SAE EP-250 oil. 9. Adjust end caps an equal distance from each end of the shaft and lock lower cap securely with (2) set screws. MAINTENANCE [INSTRUCTIONS LUBRICATION CHASSIS. Fill a pressure gun with good quality semi-fluid type pressure gun grease (do not use cup grease) and apply to grease fittings as noted in A through L below. The letters shown in Figures 18 and 19 indicate all points of lubrication listed below. A - Outer traction shaft bearings (2): Lubricate every 40 hours of operation. B - Differential housing fitting: Lubricate every 40 hours of operation. This fitting supplies lubri- cation to both differential and outer traction tube bearings. C - Reel bearings (2); Lubricate every 40 hours of operation. D - Guide wheel bearings (2): hours of operation. Lubricate every 40 +; > = x 2 sit aww ls Ld FT 22, ta . Lubricate every 40 hours of operation, using oil can to put oil in oil cup. Use No. 30 oil. Tip spout at an angle. Clutch sleeve and fingers: Lubricate every 40 hours of operation with No. 30 oil. Air Filter: See Engine Manual for Service In- structions. Gear reducer housing on engine: The oil level in housing must be checked at the start of the cutting season. Remove upper and lower slotted head pipe plugs. Fill housing to level of lower oil plug hole with No. 10 S.A.E. oil. Replace plug tightly. Reel clutch shaft and idler pulley: Apply a few drops of cil weekly. Idler pivot arm: lubricate cam area with grease - (Not shown). CHAIN. For long chain life oil must be applied every 8 hours of operation to the chain side plates so that oil reaches the inside of each roller. See Figure 20 for correct method to oil roller chains. ¢ CAUTION | Never clean with gasoline or solvent as this will ruin the cellulose cleaning element sealed in the air cleaner. Replace air cleaner if damaged or completely plugged with dirt. 13 APPLY OIL TO SIDEPLATES OIL MUST REACH ROLLER SHAFTS. USE NO. 30 OIL. Figure 20. ADJUSTMENTS CHASSIS AND DRIVE CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT. If the clutch fails to hold properly or begins to slip, it can be adjusted by loosening the fillister head screw on the clutch adjusting collar and moving the collar away from the engine slightly. Tighten the screw securely. Proper adjustment will permit easy operation of the clutch without any slippage. REEL BEARING ADJUSTMENT. To adjust reel shaft end play, disengage reel clutch and have bed knife out of contact with reel blade. Remove cover plate from reel bearing housing on right hand side of mower. Turn adjusting nut on reel shaft clockwise to draw shaft into bearing. Turn nut only until all reel end play is taken out. IT MUST BE POSSIBLE TO SPIN THE REEL FREELY after making this adjustment. CUTTING UNIT ADJUSTMENT. To provide a posi- tive cutting surface and insure clean mowing adjust the bed knife as follows: 1. Disengage the reel clutch so reel can be ro- tated by hand. Remove belt shield and remove adjustment screw shield from left side frame. 2. Loosen the two upper hex head bed knife shoe adjusting screws in side frames one quarter turn, see Figure 21. Tighten lower screw to raise bed knife. 3. Rotate the reel by hand and tighten the lower screws in the side frames equally until the knife just comes in contact with the reel blades. Tighten upper screws securely. 4. When correctly adjusted, each blade will cut a strip of newspaper the full length when held approximately 45 degrees to top face of bed knife and the reel can be spun freely by hand. 9. Install shield and belt shield. ÿ CAUTION | Avoid raising the bed knife tobring on excessive tightness between knife and reel blades. This causes unnecessary wear to reel blades and requires the engine to work with undue strain. 16 SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS CUTTING REEL SERVICE When the reel blades become dull or nicked they can be lapped with emery dust and oil to sharpen them. After considerable service it may be necessarytore- move the reel to have the blades ground. 1. Remove belt shield from left side frame. Push reel clutch lever forward to disengage. 2. Insert reversing crank (Part No. 304686, avail- able from Jacobsen dealer) in end of reel shaft, see Figure 22. 3. Adjust bed knife evenly with bed knife adjust- ing screws so reel blades wipe along its entire length. For high spots on bed knife, loosen screw nearest spot and insert shim between knife and shoe. With knife in best possible con- tact with blades, turn reel backwards and apply a mixture of emery dust (#60 carborundum) and oil with a brush along the entire length of the reel. When blades have been evenly lapped in this manner carefully wash off remaining mixture from blades and shoe. Remove crank and replace belt shield. 4. Readjust cutting unit as explained under CUT- TING UNIT ADJUSTMENT. ADJUSTING Et LOWER SCREW BED KNIFE ADJUSTING SCREW Figure 21. 9. To remove reel to have blades ground, remove belt shield, remove belts and pulley from reel. Remove bearing cover and bearing housing from side frames. With bed knife out of contact with reel, remove reel from mower. Replace reel in reverse order of removal and adjust cutting unit after replacing reel. REEL CLUTCH ——— REVERS Ne — REEL SHAFT : Figure 22. REEL CLUTCH AND BELT SERVICE To service the reel clutch and belts, remove two flat head screws securing belt shield to left side frame and remove shield. The belt idler tension spring may become weak or broken. Remove spring and replace if necessary. Inspect reel drive belts for wear and stretching. Replace belts if necessary. Always re- place both belts as a matched set.
