Preparations before getting started 1) Read these instructions carefully. 2) Keep these instructions for future reference. 3) Heed all warnings. 4) Follow all instructions. ) ) ) ) 5) Do not expose to water or moisture. 6) Clean only with a dry cloth. 7) Keep objects away from ventilation openings. Do not block any ventilation openings at any time. 8) Do not install near any heat sources such as stoves, radiators, amplifiers or any apparatus that produce heat. 9) Do not force the power plug in the wall outlet. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. The wide blade is provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet. 10) Place the power cord so that it is protected from being walked on, pinched by objects, torn and exposed to liquids, especially at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the product. 11) Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer. Use of attachments/accessories not recommended by the product manufacturer may cause hazards. 12) Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip —over. 13) Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time. 14) Do not use this apparatus near water, and do not objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the apparatus. 15) Refer all servicing to authorized service personnel. 1. Cautions when using the player This player is a mass storage USB drive that requires careful use. Please follow the instructions below for more convenient and stable use: 1) Because the player is a mass storage USB drive, it is not expected to permanently and stably carry data in it. Accordingly, important data needs to be backed up separately. 2) Do not put the player in or around a magnetic field. In particular, you must not use a magnetic holder. 3) It is recommended that the player be recharged at a normal operating temperature. Do not recharge the unit in high temperature conditions (ex, in a parked car in the summer). 4) Do not shock the player when in use. It is recommended that you do not use the player while exercising. 5) Connect the AC Adapter to the player when defragmenting or formating (FAT32) the disk 6) Keep the player away from the direct rays of the sun or a heating source. Dont leave it exposed to a condition with high temperature (ex, in a parked car in the summer). 7) Do not expose the player to a high-moisture environment because such a condition may result in malfunction. 8) The indoor temperature of a vehicle in the summer may become more than 140°F. Be careful not to leave the player in such a condition for a long time (normal operating temperature: 41°F - 13°F). 9) When using a DC adapter for vehicles, connect it after having started your car. Disconnect it when you stop the car. 10) Do not wipe the player with alcohol, benzene, thinners or other chemical solvents, since they may damage the player. 11) If you want to use the player for a long time, it is recommended to remove the battery and connect the AC adapter. 12) Continuous use of earphones may cause hearing impairment. 13) Be careful when connecting the AC adapter to the power supply. 14) Do not use the player while driving. 15) Do not disassemble, repair or attempt to modify the player without professional help. 2. Components The components of the player are subject to change without notice for quality improvements. Minimum requirements for the PC To connect the player to the PC, it must meet the following minimum requirements: 1) CPU: Pentium II! S0OMHZ or higher / Macintosh iMac G3 or higher 2) OS: Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP, or Mac OS 9.1 or higher 3) CD-ROM drive 4) Color monitor (SVGA or higher) 5) 128MB RAM 6) USB port (USB 2.0 recommended) 7) Hard disk with more than 1GB free space % There may be some connection problems to a PC that doesnt meet the minimum requirements above. 2. Name of parts 1. Top / front 1) Power / Hold: Turn the player off/on, or to lock it. 2) TFT LCD: Control the player using its touch screen. 3) Speaker: Enjoy sound from the monophonic speaker instead of earphones. 4) Infrared sensor/LED: The player is equipped with an infrared sensor for the remote control. The blue LED be on as the player is booting up and when the AC adapter is powering the unit. 5) Joystick: When using the player without the stylus, push the joystick up/down or to the left/right to select a menu icon, item or file and then press the joystick to enter or open it. 6) Tab button: When using the player without the stylus, use the tab button to switch to a different part of the screen. 7) Microphone: The built-in microphone is used for voice recording. 8) Enter button: Use the enter button to execute an action when you select an icon, item or file without the stylus. 2. Left / right 1) Earphone jack: Connect the earphones to this standard earphone jack with a 3.5mm diameter. 2) Expansion jack: This jack currently has no use. 3) S-Video out jack: If you want to enjoy high quality video, it is recommended that you use the S-Video out jack to connect to a TV that supports S-Video. 4) RESET: Reboot the player by clicking RESET with the stylus. (Uncover the rubber cap on the player to see the RESET button). 5) TV-OUT jack: Enjoy video on a TV by connecting the TV-OUT jack to the TV Video-in with the supplied cable. 6) Volume: Use these buttons to adjust the volume (0 - 40). 7) Hand strap ring: Hook the hand strap in the hand strap ring if desired. 8) USB port: Connect the supplied USB cable to connect to a PC, or connect the supplied USB host cable to connect to another external source (ex. digital camera). 9) DC adapter jack: Connect the AC adapter for power/recharging. 3. Back / bottom 1) Stand hole: Insert the stylus into the stand hole to create a stand. You can also adjust the angle by changing the length of the stylus. 2) Battery: Detachable lithium polymer. 3) Battery release button: Release the battery by pressing the battery release button. 4) Stylus: Use the stylus by “clicking” the touch screen. 3. Power on / off 4. Battery 1. HOLD When HOLD is switched on, all of the functions are locked. 2. Power on 1) Push the power switch to the left and hold for over 2 seconds. The player will turn on and the version of the player will be displayed. 2) The main menu screen will appear. 3. Power off 1) Push the power switch to the left and hold for over 3 seconds. The player will turn off. < Note > . If the player fails to work, press RESET to reboot it. The RESET button is located in between the S-Video jack and the TV- OUT jack. . It is recommended to exit the current program before turning the player off. 1. Connecting / Disconnecting the battery 1) After pressing the battery release button, push the battery away in the direction of the arrow to disconnect the battery (see figure below). 2) After fitting the battery in for connecting, push it in so that it snaps into the player. = x Caution : Turn the player off before removing the battery from it. Recharging the battery 1) Connect the AC adapter to DC adapter jack of the player. 2) Plug the adapter in a power supply, and you will see a blue light turn on. 3) While the player is recharging, the LED will flash. Once charging is complete, the LED will stop flashing. 3. Battery charge 1) In the upper right corner of the screen, there is a battery charge indicator. 2) If you continue to use the player when the battery charge is too low, it will automatically turn off. < Note > . When the battery has been fully discharged, it is recommended to recharge it for at least an hour before turning the player on again. . When a message appears stating that the battery charge is low, immediately recharge it. Continuous use of a fully discharged battery may cause damage to the player. 4. Cautions when using the battery The battery is a lithium polymer battery (2700 mAh/3.7 V). Its misuse may cause a fire or an emission of high heat. Follow the instructions below: 1) Keep the battery away from a heat source or chemical solvents. 2 3 4) Never set the battery on fire when disposing it. ) ) Only use the supplied AC Adapter on the player. ) Never insert the battery into the player if it has been soaked in water. ) 5) When the battery has been fully discharged, it is recommended to recharge it for at least an hour before turning the player on again. 6) If you want to use the player for a long time, it is recommended to remove the battery and connect the AC adapter. 7) Prior to an initial use of the battery or if a long time has passed since its last use, It Is recommended to fully recharge it. 8) A battery has a limited lifetime. For example, lithium polymer batteries can be charged and discharged about 500 times at normal operating conditions. 5. Connecting the player to the PC Connect the player to the PC using the supplied USB cable as shown in the figure below. 2. When the operating system (OS) of the PC is Windows ME, 2000 or XP You do not have to install a separate USB driver for a PC that has Windows ME, 2000 or XP as its OS. The PC will automatically recognize the player once it is connected. 1) Turn the player on and connect to the PC. 2) On the screen, you will see an icon showing that the player has been successfully connected to the PC. 3. Installing the USB driver for Windows 98SE If the PC has Windows 98SE as its OS, you should install a separate Windows 98SE driver before connecting it to the PC. Insert into the CD-ROM drive the supplied CD (Windows 98SE driver included), and then connect it to the PC using the supplied USB cable. Follow the steps below. Click “OK” to continue. Install From Disk [C:NWin98_ Diver 7) Click “OK”. Add Mew Hard Models: Portable Multimedia Plaver Driver [ 4-28-2006) 8) Click “Next”. 9) Click “Next”. Add Mew Hardware Wizard 10) Click “Finish” to finish installing the USB driver 4. Checking if the player has been successfully connected to the PC If the player has been successfully connected to the PC, you will see a removable disc called “12” in My Computer. 5. Disconnecting the player from the PC If you want to disconnect the player from the PC, follow the steps below: 1) Right-click the mouse on the hardware disconnection icon in the task bar tray. “Stop USB Mass Storage Device Drive”, “Unplug or gject hardware” or "Safely remove hardware” will appear. USB OTG (On-The-Go): connecting other USB drives to the player You can transfer data to the player by directly connecting other USB devices (ex. digital camera) to it. Push the power switch to the left and hold for over 2 seconds to turn the player on. USB OTG (On-The-Go): transferring data 1) If you have successfully connected the cable as shown above, a window will appear. 2) Click “Trans, Start’ to transfer data from an external USB drive to the player. 3) After data has been successfully transferred, “Completed!” will appear on the screen. Then, it is safe to disconnect the USB host cable. ‘а Info: Do not disconnect the USB host cable while data is being transferred to the player. < Note > . If data transfer has failed, “Transmission Error” will appear on the screen. Reconnect the USB host cable. . If there is not enough free space on the player to store data, “Disk Full” will appear on the screen. Retry the data transfer after freeing up some space. . Transferred data is stored in sequentially created folders that start from "DSK00000”. 8. Transfer / store / delete file 1) Connect the player to the PC. Check if the player has been successfully recognized. 2) Use the mouse to select a file/folder (or files/folders by holding shift or Ctrl), and copy (Ctrl -C) or cut (Ctrl -X) the fileffolder. 3) Select the “12” drive, and paste (Ctrl-V the file/folder into the desired folder. 4) Use the mouse to select a file/folder, and press “Delete” on the keyboard to delete it. < Note > . You can also use the mouse to drag and drop files/folders. a 20 == 6. Stylus / buttons 1. Using the Stylus . Click: Use the stylus to click an icon on the display by softly touching it. . Double-Click: Use the stylus to click an icon on the display by softly touching it twice. . Drag: Use the stylus to select a point or sliding bar and drag it (like using a mouse on a PC). < Note > . The Drag function is used when you use the volume bar, navigation bar, Painter, pan, etc. 2. Standing the player on the stylus 1) Pull out the stylus from the player. 2) Adjust the angle of inclination by cnanging its length. 3) Stick the stylus in the stand hole on the back, and stand the player on it. The wireless remote control is useful and convenient when the player is connected to the TY. — 29 — 8. Getting updated 1. Updating BIOS (Update.bin) 1) You can download a new version of the BIOS (update.bin) at our website (www.cobyusa.com). 2) Turn on the player. Ensure that there are at least 3 bars on the battery indicator. If there are less than 3 bars, use the AC Adapter. 3) Connect the player to the PC(see to “Connecting the player to the PC”). 4) Copy the downloaded file “update _12.bin” to the root folder of the player. 5) Disconnect the USB cable from the player after copying the file to the root folder (see "Disconnecting the player from the PC”). 6) Turned off for its re-booting. 7) The player will be automatically updated when you turn the player back on. Click the icon (Z) on the upper right of “Settings” to check the version of BIOS. à Info: If the name of the downloaded file is changed, the player may not get updated. Never change it. . After the firmware has been updated, the copied file will automatically be deleted. 2. Updating the firmware . All programs, system files and other data to work the player are installed in its “system” folder. Deleting them may cause a malfunction. If you accidentally delete them or when you format the player, you should re-install the firmware using the supplied CD. . The firmware is installed in the “system” folder. . Updating the USB chip 1) Download the USB Chip upgrade from our website (www.cobyusa.com). 2) Click in the following order: Settings > Others> Updating USB > Start (=Start= ). 3) When the message “Connect USB Drive” appears, connect the player to the PC. 4) Double-click the downloaded file to start the update. When “Update Completed” appears, disconnect the player from the PC. Using the Player 1. Using the video player This section explains how to operate the player using the stylus. 1. Open / Play Video File 1) Double-click the video player icon. | y 2) If an introductory pop-up window appears, click one of the options. . Resume Prev. File: Opens the last video file played from the point at which it was stopped. . Restart Prev. File: Opens the last video file played from the beginning. . The icon will change to “Pause” and the video will play. 4) If you do not click anything in the video player control window, it will fade out after a certain amount of time. < Note > . If “Privacy” in the Video Player Playback Settings has been set to “OK”, then the player will show a black screen when the player is paused. 6. Stop / Exit during playback 1) Softly touch the screen with the stylus during playback to display the video player control window. 2) Click “Stop 1) to stop the video. Changing the aspect ratio 1) Softly touch the display with the stylus during playback to display the video player control window. 2) Click “Aspect Ratio ( ) to change the aspect ratio. 3) Each click will change the aspect ratio. The order is wide screen (16:9), full screen, 4:3 ratio and orig. ratio (original aspect ratio of the video file). 9. Subtitles On / Off 1) Softly touch the display with the stylus during playback to display the video player control window. 2) Click “Subtitle (| = 1)” while playing back a video file with a subtitle file to turn off the subtitles. Click the icon again to display subtitles. Subtitles will only be displayed if a subtitle file (.srt or .smi) exists in the same folder as the video file. The subtitle file must have the same filename as the video file (ex. MyVideo.avi and MyVideo.srt). 10. Mute On / Off 1) Softly touch the display with the stylus during playback to display the video player control window. 2) Click “Mute (| Cu ) to turn the sound off. The icon will change to "(_ J) Click “Mute ( J ) to turn the sound back on. < Note > . If you adjust the volume when the sound is muted, mute is automatically released. 11. Volume Bar / Navigation Bar 1) Softly touch the screen with the stylus during playback to display the video player control window. 2) Adjust the volume by clicking a point on the volume bar or dragging it to another point. The new volume number will be displayed on screen. 3) Click a point on the navigation bar. The video will play from that point. 12. Settings / Help 1) Softly touch the screen with the stylus during playback to display the video player control window. 2) Click “Settings (°F ) to enter the video player settings. 3) After setting the options click “OK” to save the settings. < Note > . If you click “Cancel”, changed settings will not be saved. . Ratio, Wide Screen, Full Screen, 4:3 ratio). . Menu Clarity: Set the transparency of the video player control window (30%, 50%, 70%, OFF). . Privacy Mode: When privacy mode is set to “OK”, the screen will go black when a video file is paused. . Font: Change the font size of the subtitles (12, 14, 16). < Help > . Jump to those parts by pressing the tab button on the player, and select an item by using the joystick. Press the joystick on a selected icon to execute the action. E... Miscellaneous 1. FAQs If you are experiencing difficulty with the player please check the following cases below, before contacting technical support. 1. The player will not turn on. Check if the battery has been completely discharged. If so, recharge it for over 4 hours and try tuming it on again. 2. The joystick and buttons don't work. Check if the hold key is switched on. If so, switch it off. 3. You can't adjust the volume with the Volume buttons. Check if the hold key is switched on. If so, switch it off. 4. Video files cannot be played back. Try to play them on the PC first. If you still cannot play them back, they may have been damaged. If they can be played back on the PC, check if their file formats and bit rates are supported by the player. 5. Video files played back by the player cannot be fast backward/forward. A-B Repeat does not work. The video files may not contain timing information. Fast backward/forward will not work on the PC, either. 6. You can see nothing on the screen when playing back video files, although you can hear from the player. Try to play them on the PC first. If you still cannot play them back, they may have been damaged. If they can be played back on the PC, check If their file formats and bit rates are supported by the player. 7.
