Section 1: Getting Started

Understanding this User Manual

The sections of this manual are laid out to assist you with your setup and follow the UI features of your Galaxy Gear™.

A robust index for features begins on page 76.

Also included is important safety information, beginning on

page 51, that you should know before using your device.

This manual gives navigation instructions according to the default display settings.

Unless otherwise specified, all instructions in this manual assume you are starting from the Home (Clock) screen.

Note: Instructions in this manual are based on default settings, and may vary from your device, depending on the software version on your device, and any changes to the device’s Settings.

Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this User Manual start with the device at the Home screen.

All screen images in this manual are simulated. Actual displays may vary, depending on the software version of your device and any changes to the device’s firmware.

Setting Up Your Device

These steps take you through an out-of-the-box setup process. These procedures are intended to help you get your device setup, activated, and assist you with your initial connection.

Charging the Battery

Your device is powered by an internal rechargeable Li-ion battery. Use only approved chargers with this device. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.

Important! It is recommended you fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time.

Note: If the battery is completely discharged, the device cannot be turned on. Allow a depleted battery to charge for a few minutes before turning on the device.

Before turning on your Galaxy Gear for the first time, charge it fully.

In a single motion, slide and hold the switch (1) to open the Charging cradle’s protective cover. (2)

Carefully place the device onto the cradle (3), making sure to align the connector plates to the charging pins.

Firmly close the cover (4).

Insert the power plug into a compatible electrical outlet.

Caution! Connecting the charger improperly may cause serious damage to the device. Any damage caused by misuse is not covered by the warranty.

Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. The device turns on and indicates its charge state.

Note: While charging, you cannot use calling features, voice recorder, and camera.

8.

When charging is finished, first unplug the charger’s power plug from the AC wall outlet, then disconnect the charger’s connector from the device.

Checking the battery charge status

With the device turned off, the current charge state is displayed on-screen. The following icons will show the current battery charge status when the Galaxy Gear is off:

Displays your current battery charge level.

Icon shown is fully charged.

Shows your current battery level and percentage.

Icon shows the device only has a few minutes of power remaining and will soon shutdown.

The Galaxy Gear communicates to a compatible smartphone via an active Bluetooth connection.

Important! Before the pairing process can be initiated, the smartphone should have a current version of the

Gear Manager application loaded.

Once paired, its the Gear Manager application that provides a direct connection and access to setup/configuration menus for the Galaxy Gear.

Installing Gear Manager

1.

Remove the Charging cradle from the packaging.

2.

Turn on your smartphone and enable NFC communication.

3.

Turn your Charging cradle around and tap it to the back of the smartphone.

4.

Read the on-screen Installation information, then tap

OK ➔ Install .

5.

If prompted, Accept Google’s app verification.

6.

Confirm the Gear Manager application is now open.

7.

Agree to the Terms of Use, and select Accept . This is a one-time process.

Launching Gear Manager

The appearance of on-screen items within Galaxy Gear are controlled via the Gear Manager application.

From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap

( Gear Manager ).

Pairing the Devices Automatically

The Galaxy Gear and smartphone are paired using

Bluetooth

®

technology.

Important! The Galaxy Gear must be paired from within the

Gear Manger application. If it is paired manually from within the Bluetooth menu, the device will not correctly appear the application listing.

Press and hold ( Power/Home ) to turn the device on. The following should occur once your device turns on.

2.

Turn on your smartphone and enable NFC communication. If not already active, you may be prompted to activate Bluetooth.

3.

Turn your Charging cradle around and tap it to the back of the smartphone.

Note: The Charging cradle contains the Bluetooth connection information for the Galaxy Gear embedded within its

NFC tag.

4.

Tap ) on the Galaxy Gear screen, confirm the PIN codes match, and tap OK on your smartphone to confirm the pairing request.

5.

Read the on-screen legal and disclaimer information and accept the terms and conditions to complete the process.

6.

Verify the Samsung Galaxy Gear entry now shows

“Connected” within the Gear Manager application and the icon appears at the top of your smartphone’s screen.

Note: If the connection process fails, restart both devices and repeat the steps above.

Important! If re-pairing a previously connected device, select

Restore to update all settings and parameters from your smartphone.

DO NOT interrupt the restore process.

Pairing the Devices Manually

If there is an issue when trying to pair the devices automatically via the use of the NFC tapping (between the smartphone and the Charging cradle), then manual pairing must be done.

To pair the devices manually:

1.

Activate Bluetooth on the smartphone.

Note: Verify Bluetooth visibility is active.

If the Gear Manager has not yet been used to pair a

Gear, tap Connect manually .

Tap the paired device from within the Paired Gear area of the screen and select Connect new Gear ➔ OK ➔

Tap the GALAXY Gear device from within the available on-screen list.

Important! If prompted to restore a connection, select Restore to update all settings and parameters from your smartphone.

Disconnecting the Devices

Tap the paired device from within the Paired Gear area of the screen and select Disconnect ➔ OK .

Note: The icon disappears from the top of your target device’s screen.

Wearing the Device

Thread the wristband through the Frame (1).

2.

Slide your hand through the strap opening.

In a single motion, push the metal joint downwards

(towards the back of the Galaxy Gear), and then push the buckle down towards until you hear a click.

Place the Metal Pin into the desired hole on the wristband (2).

Note: Use care when opening and closing the clasp.

Caution! Do not bend the strap excessively. Doing so may damage the device.

Firmly grasp both sides of the buckle.

2.

Carefully pull the Buckle upwards and away from the wristband. This causes the metal joint to move upwards (away from the back of the Galaxy Gear).

2. Display shows all the information needed to operate your device, such as the number of wirelessly connected devices, number of received messages

(along with date, time and phone number), and data usage.

3. Wristband threads through the frame to secure the device to your wrist.

5. Cradle Connector Plates (back of device) when connected to the connector pins on the cradle, provides charging to the device.

Note: Do not use a screen protector. This causes sensor malfunctions.

1. Camera lens is used to take photos and shoot videos.

2. Microphones (along sides) are used during phone calls and allow other callers to hear you clearly when you are speaking to them. There are two microphones on the device:

• Bottom microphone: used during handset mode.

• Top microphone: used while an active call is in the speakerphone mode and assists in noise cancellation

(2 microphone solution).

3. Power/Home key ends switches the device off and on.

• Press and hold to turn the device on or off.

• Press and hold for more than 7 seconds to reset the device if it develops any fatal errors, hang-ups, or freezes.

• Press once to return to the Home (Clock) screen.

• Press to unlock the device. The device goes into lock mode when the touch screen turns off.

4. Frame is used to thread the wristband through for securing the Galaxy Gear.

6. Joint is folded together to either secure the buckle to strap or aid in the removal of the Galaxy Gear.


Charging Cradle Views

The Charging cradle provides both power and connectivity for a connected and mounted Galaxy Gear.

Note: The Charging Cradle contains an embedded TecTile that is used in conjunction with your smartphone’s NFC technology to both acquire the Gear Manager application and aid in automatically pairing the two devices.

1. Charging Port (back of unit) allows you to connect a compatible power cable.

Caution! Please use only an approved charging accessory to charge your device. Improper handling of the charging port, as well as the use of an incompatible charger, may cause damage to your device and void the warranty.

2. Security Latch used to release the security cover.

3. Charging Pins provide power to the device once secured onto the cradle.

4. Cover used to hold the Galaxy Gear securely within the

Charging cradle.

On-Screen Indicators

Reveal the Control Panel (Bluetooth connection status,

Battery level, Volume and Brightness levels) by quickly tapping simultaneously twice on the screen using two fingers.

Control Panel

The following icons will show within the Notifications Bar when the Galaxy Gear is turned on:

Displays your current battery charge level.

Icon shown is fully charged.

Displays your battery is currently charging.

Displays when Bluetooth technology is active and enabled but the Galaxy Gear is not communicating with the paired smartphone.

Displays when the Bluetooth technology is active, paired, and communicating with an external device.

Once the device is connected, confirm the corresponding icon appears on the smartphone’s display.

Displays when the Galaxy Gear connection is active and communicating with your smartphone. Both devices are successfully communicating via the Gear Manager.


Navigation and Gestures

Using the touch screen display you can navigate the features of your device, select menu items, and enter characters.

The following conventions are used in this manual to describe the navigation action in the procedures.

Waking the Device

Shake the Galaxy Gear on your wrist or press

( Power/Home ).

Navigating Through the Screens

The following terms describe the most common hardware and on-screen actions.

Swipe/Slide Tap Double-tap

• Swipe or slide : Quickly drag your finger left or right across the screen to view your favorite applications. Scroll up or down to navigate within an available on-screen list.

For example: slide your finger left or right on the Home (Clock) screen to scroll among the currently loaded favorite applications or slide through an available on-screen list.

Note: From an open application screen, swipe down to exit the current application and return to the Home screen.

• Tap : use a brief touch to select items on the display or to enter text on the virtual keypad. For example: tap an Application icon to open the application.

• Double-Tap : in a single motion, tap the screen simultaneously with two fingers to:

• Access the Brightness and Volume controls.

• View Battery and Bluetooth connection status.

• Pinch : “Pinch” the screen using your thumb and forefinger to zoom out when viewing a picture. (Move fingers inward to zoom out.)

• Spread : “Spread” the screen using your thumb and forefinger to zoom in when viewing a picture. (Move fingers outward to zoom in.)

Adjusting the Brightness

Double-tap the screen simultaneously once with two fingers, and then tap or under Brightness .

( Apps ) Settings ➔ Display ➔ Brightness , adjust the brightness, then tap OK .

Adjusting the Volume

Double-tap the screen simultaneously once with two fingers, and then tap or under Volume .

Section 3: Understanding the Gear Manager

The Gear Manager application manages the connection between your Galaxy Gear and a connected smartphone.

In works to synchronize and manage the favorite applications located on the Galaxy Gear, adjust settings, configure connections.

The appearance of on-screen items within Galaxy Gear are controlled via the Gear Manager application.

Launching Gear Manager

This application allows you to connect to a smartphone, customize your Galaxy Gear settings and applications.

Working with a Paired Gear

From within your smartphone’s Applications page, tap ) ➔ Paired Gear field.

Select an available on-screen menu option:

• Rename : allows you to change the reference name used by the Gear Manager application for the selected Galaxy Gear.

• Disconnect/Connect : allows you to disconnect or later reconnect a currently paired Galaxy Gear device.

• Connect New Gear : allows you to pair a new Galaxy Gear device.

• Software update : allows you to use your current smartphone connection to update the Gear manager software.

• Model number : displays the current Galaxy Gear model number.

• Software version : displays the current Galaxy Gear software/ firmware version.

Renaming the Connected Device

It is important to rename a currently connected Galaxy Gear so that the identity of the device can not be determined and its not left with its default name.

It is also useful to identify individual Galaxy Gear devices if you have multiple units connected/paired to the same smartphone.

Select Rename , tap the current Device name entry field to select the current name.

Delete the current entry, use the on-screen keyboard to enter a new unique name, and tap OK .

Confirm the new name has been properly applied.

Disconnecting a Currently Connected Device

Select Disconnect ➔ OK . The Galaxy Gear screen will temporarily indicate “ Bluetooth disconnected ”.

Reconnecting a Previously Connected Device

If your currently used Galaxy Gear ever becomes temporarily disconnected, it can be reconnected (re-paired) to its current smartphones very easily.

Important! A Galaxy Gear can be temporarily disconnected if: the poser is completely depleted or if it is taken out of Bluetooth range.

Select Connect . The Galaxy Gear screen will temporarily indicate “ Bluetooth connected ”.


Connecting to a Different Galaxy Gear

Although a single smartphone can be paired to multiple

Galaxy Gear devices, only one device can be controlled via the application on the smartphone at any single time.

If you go from using one Galaxy Gear then begin the paring process with a secondary unit, the Gear Manager application will have to “sync up” the configuration and settings between the smartphone and the newly pairing Galaxy Gear.

This synchronization process requires that the new Galaxy

Gear “Restore” its parameters and settings with your Gear

Manager.

Caution! If the Gear Manager recognizes a previously paired

Galaxy Gear, it will attempt to synchronize the two devices. DO NOT interrupt this restoration process.

Clocks

My Apps

This menu allows you manage the applications being synchronized between your smartphone and the paired

Galaxy Gear.

Tab Overview

There are currently three tabs located within the My Apps screen:

• Favorites : displays both your currently assigned favorite apps

(those that appear on the Galaxy Gear as you swipe across the main screens) and provides you the ability to Add, Rearrange, or delete any application from this category.

• Installed apps : only displays a list of those currently loaded applications that appear on the Galaxy Gear. When available, some apps listed provide access to settings for configuration.

• Featured : provides an updated listing of new and feature applications that can be installed onto the Galaxy Gear directly from the Samsung Apps function on your smartphone.

Using the Favorites Tab

Adding Your Favorite Applications

Galaxy Gear comes with a set of default favorite applications that appear as you scroll across the screen. This list of displayed applications can be customized via the Gear

Manager application on the smartphone.

Note: Access to this feature requires that you already be logged in to your Samsung account application on the paired smartphone.

Galaxy Gear. These settings focus on how the Galaxy Gear interacts with your target smartphone.

• Wake-up gesture : when activated, this feature allows you to wake up the Galaxy Gear by simply raising the arm your Gear is on.

• Open source licence : displays the current licensing information.

To activate the notification features:

Making a Call

Logs Tab

The Logs tab is a list of the phone numbers (or Contacts entries) for calls you placed, accepted, or missed. The Logs tab makes redialing a number fast and easy. It is continually updated as your device automatically adds new numbers to the beginning of the list and removes the oldest entries from the bottom of the list.

The Notification area of the Home screen (upper left) displays phone notifications, status, or alerts such as:

Displays when a call was missed.

Each entry contains the phone number (if it is available) and

Contacts entry name (if the number is in your Contacts).

Indicates all outgoing calls made from your device.

Indicates any received calls that were answered.

Indicates a missed call.

Indicates any received calls that were rejected.

This app can be used to monitor your exercise. While moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, is safe for most people, health experts suggest that you talk with your doctor before you start an exercise program, particularly if you have any of the following conditions:

• Heart disease;

• Asthma or lung disease;

• Diabetes, or liver or kidney disease;

• Arthritis.

You should also check with your doctor if you have symptoms suggestive of heart, lung, or other serious disease, such as:

• Pain or discomfort in your chest, neck, jaw, or arms during physical activity;

• Dizziness or loss of consciousness;

• Shortness of breath with mild exertion or at rest, or when lying down or going to bed;

• Ankle swelling, especially at night;

• A heart murmur or a rapid or pronounced heartbeat;

• Muscle pain when walking upstairs or up a hill that goes away when you rest.

Use this application to command the connected smartphone remotely by voice to do such actions as: dial a number, send a message, write a memo, and more.

Using S Voice on the Galaxy Gear leverages the functionality of the same application on the paired smartphone to do the work for you. When you say a command to the microphone on this device, S Voice on the connected smartphone launches.

Important! Before launching S Voice for the first time, you will need to launch S Voice on the paired smartphone and agree its terms of use.

• Vibration : tap an on-screen entry to assign a new vibration type. Select a vibration type (Strong, Medium, or Weak) and then tap OK .

• Preferred arm : tap an on-screen entry to assign a preferred display profile. Choose from: Left arm or Right arm.

Volume

The Volume menu now provides access to various volume settings within one menu.

Battery Use and Safety

The battery in GALAXY is not intended to be replaced by the consumer. If you believe the battery is damaged or needs to be replaced, take the GALAXY to a service center for inspection and replacement.

Important! Handle and store batteries properly to avoid injury or damage. Most battery issues arise from improper handling of batteries and, particularly, from the continued use of damaged batteries.

• Do not disassemble, crush, puncture, shred, or otherwise attempt to change the form of your battery . Do not put a high degree of pressure on the battery. This can cause leakage or an internal shortcircuit, resulting in overheating.

• Do not let the GALAXY come in contact with liquids . Liquids can get into the GALAXY's circuits, leading to corrosion. Even when the GALAXY appears to be dry and appears to operate normally, the circuitry could slowly corrode and pose a safety hazard. Responsible Listening

Caution! Avoid potential hearing loss .

Damage to hearing occurs when a person is exposed to loud sounds over time. The risk of hearing loss increases as sound is played louder and for longer durations.

Prolonged exposure to loud sounds (including music) is the most common cause of preventable hearing loss. Some scientific research suggests that using portable audio devices, such as portable music players and cell phones, at high volume settings for long durations may lead to permanent noise-induced hearing loss. This includes the use of headphones (including headsets, earbuds, and Bluetooth

® or other wireless devices).

Exposure to very loud sound has also been associated in some studies with tinnitus (a ringing in the ear), hypersensitivity to sound, and distorted hearing. Individual susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss and potential hearing problem varies. Additionally, the amount of sound produced by a portable audio device varies depending on the nature of the sound, the device settings, and the headphones that are used. As a result, there is no single volume setting that is appropriate for everyone or for every combination of sound, settings, and equipment.

You should follow some common sense recommendations when using any portable audio device:

• Always turn the volume down before plugging the earphones into an audio source.


• Set the volume in a quiet environment and select the lowest volume at which you can hear adequately.

• Be aware that you can adapt to higher volume settings over time, not realizing that the higher volume may be harmful to your hearing.

• When using headphones, turn the volume down if you cannot hear the people speaking near you or if the person sitting next to you can hear what you are listening to.

Implantable Medical Devices

Repaired/replaced cases, pouches and holsters will be warranted for a period of ninety (90) days. All other repaired/ replaced Products will be warranted for a period equal to the remainder of the original Limited Warranty on the original

Product or for ninety (90) days, whichever is longer. All replaced Products, parts, components, boards and equipment shall become the property of SAMSUNG. Except to any extent expressly allowed by applicable law, transfer or assignment of this Limited Warranty is prohibited.

What must you do to obtain warranty service?

To obtain service under this Limited Warranty, you must return the Product to an authorized phone service facility in an adequate container for shipping, accompanied by the sales receipt or comparable proof of sale showing the original date of purchase, the serial number of the Product and the seller’s name and address.

To obtain assistance on where to deliver the Product, please call SAMSUNG Customer Care at 1-888-987-4357. If

SAMSUNG determines that any Product is not covered by this

Limited Warranty, you must pay all parts, shipping, and labor charges for the repair or return of such Product.

You should keep a separate backup copy of any contents of the Product before delivering the Product to SAMSUNG for warranty service, as some or all of the contents may be deleted or reformatted during the course of warranty service.

What is the procedure for resolving disputes?

ALL DISPUTES WITH SAMSUNG ARISING IN ANY WAY FROM

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY OR THE SALE, CONDITION OR

PERFORMANCE OF THE PRODUCTS SHALL BE RESOLVED

EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH FINAL AND BINDING ARBITRATION,

AND NOT BY A COURT OR JURY.

Any such dispute shall not be combined or consolidated with a dispute involving any other person’s or entity’s Product or claim, and specifically, without limitation of the foregoing, shall not under any circumstances proceed as part of a class action. The arbitration shall be conducted before a single arbitrator, whose award may not exceed, in form or amount, the relief allowed by the applicable law. The arbitration shall be conducted according to the American Arbitration

Association (AAA) Commercial Arbitration Rules applicable to consumer disputes. This arbitration provision is entered pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act. The laws of the State of Texas, without reference to its choice of laws principles, shall govern the interpretation of the Limited Warranty and all disputes that are subject to this arbitration provision. The arbitrator shall decide all issues of interpretation and application of this arbitration provision and the Limited

Warranty.

For any arbitration in which your total damage claims, exclusive of attorney fees and expert witness fees, are

$5,000.00 or less (“Small Claim”), the arbitrator may, if you prevail, award your reasonable attorney fees, expert witness fees and costs as part of any award, but may not grant

SAMSUNG its attorney fees, expert witness fees or costs unless it is determined that the claim was brought in bad faith. In a Small Claim case, you shall be required to pay no more than half of the total administrative, facility and arbitrator fees, or $50.00 of such fees, whichever is less, and

SAMSUNG shall pay the remainder of such fees.

Administrative, facility and arbitrator fees for arbitrations in which your total damage claims, exclusive of attorney fees and expert witness fees, exceed $5,000.00 (“Large Claim”) shall be determined according to AAA rules. In a Large Claim case, the arbitrator may grant to the prevailing party, or apportion among the parties, reasonable attorney fees, expert witness fees and costs. Judgment may be entered on the arbitrator’s award in any court of competent jurisdiction.

This arbitration provision also applies to claims against

SAMSUNG’s employees, representatives and affiliates if any such claim arises from the Product’s sale, condition or performance.


You may opt out of this dispute resolution procedure by providing notice to SAMSUNG no later than 30 calendar days from the date of the first consumer purchaser’s purchase of the

Product. To opt out, you must send notice by e-mail to [email protected], with the subject line: “Arbitration

Opt Out.” You must include in the opt out e-mail (a) your name and address; (b) the date on which the Product was purchased;

(c) the Product model name or model number; and (d) the IMEI or MEID or Serial Number, as applicable, if you have it (the IMEI or MEID or Serial Number can be found (i) on the Product box;

(ii) on the Product information screen, which can be found under “Settings;” (iii) on a label on the back of the Product beneath the battery, if the battery is removable; and (iv) on the outside of the Product if the battery is not removable).

Alternatively, you may opt out by calling 1-888-987-4357 no later than 30 calendar days from the date of the first consumer purchaser’s purchase of the Product and providing the same information. These are the only two forms of notice that will be effective to opt out of this dispute resolution procedure. Severability

If any portion of this Limited Warranty is held to be illegal or unenforceable, such partial illegality or unenforceability shall not affect the enforceability of the remainder of the Limited

Precautions for Transfer and Disposal

If data stored on this device is deleted or reformatted using the standard methods, the data only appears to be removed on a superficial level, and it may be possible for someone to retrieve and reuse the data by means of special software.

To avoid unintended information leaks and other problems of this sort, it is recommended that the device be returned to

Samsung’s Customer Care Center for an Extended File

System (EFS) Clear which will eliminate all user memory and return all settings to default settings. Please contact the

“Update”) after the date you obtain your initial copy of the

Software related to security to improve such Software and ultimately enhance your user experience with your device. This

EULA applies to all and any component of the Update that

Samsung may provide to you or make available to you after the date you obtain your initial copy of the Software related to security, unless we provide other terms along with such Update.

To use Software related to security provided through Update, you must first be licensed for the Software identified by Samsung as eligible for the Update. After the Update, you may no longer use the Software that formed the basis for your Update eligibility. The updated Software version may add new functions and, in some limited cases, may delete existing functions.
