Downloadable at www.nmal-anon.org Stella S., Chair NM/El Paso Conflict Resolution Assembly Report Using the Traditions and Concepts for Conflict Resolution Conflict Workshop–Two one hour workshops were held. Assembly participants counted off and joined several groups for the discussion. The following is a summary of the discussions on the Traditions and Concepts in discussing Conflict within and outside the group. Questions used and the comments made follow: Tradition One “Our common welfare should come first; personal progress for the greatest number depends upon unity.” What tools can I use to examine my motives that contribute to the conflict? How is my behavior contributing to unity? How do I react to others whose opinions and ideas are different from my own? Realize I don’t have the ability to force my solutions. Is it my business or my responsibility? How important is it? If I have to justify my opinion then I am wrong. I am trying to control. Listen to your tone of voice. Do I need to be right? Am I listening or trying to force my solution? Am I bringing my anger, fear and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . July 2013 resentment into my personal opinion? Listen to everyone’s opinion first. Presume good will. Look at Service Manual to find “What is the Principle?” Listening to others opinion even if different can lead to solutions, it becomes a team effort instead of an individual trying to control a situation. Use ‘us’ and ‘we’ to address issues. Avoid judgment and criticism. Have I said it more than once? Can I agree to disagree, move on, be silent and use a prayer break? Tradition Two “For our group purpose there is but one authority — a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants—they do not govern”. What tools of the program can I use while engaged in an emotionally charged conflict? I can change my own attitude. Write it out, or use the slogans. Can I use acceptance for the sake of unity? Listening! Use the Serenity Prayer. If you feel that someone is ‘wrong’ it doesn’t mean you are ‘right’. Trust in a Higher Power. What does my HP want me to do in this situation? When a discussion is very emotional, ask for quiet or say a prayer and then continue to discuss topic. How can good listening skills help yield new ideas or compromises? We cannot be the Al-Anon police. Give Respect and dignity to the other person/people and allow them to express opinions. Do it for unity. Use the slogans, especially think, think, & think. Respond do not react. Good listening skills give us new options. If the outcome of a group conscience is one that I do not agree with, how do I respond? Every voice should be heard. The group can make a decision for a trial period and if it works continue and if not make a change. Learn to listen and listen to learn. Remember a Higher Power is in charge – and He doesn’t rule with an iron fist. God knows what He is doing. My opinion counts but if I say it more than once, I am trying to convince you I am right. Everyone has the right to be heard. Tradition Three “The relatives of alcoholics, when gathered together for mutual aid, may call themselves an Al-Anon Family Group, provided that, as a group, they have no other affiliation. The only requirement for membership is that there be a problem of alcoholism in a relative or friend.” How do we keep the focus on what we have in common, rather than our differences? No cross talk. Take what you like and leave the rest. Keep the focus on ourselves. Realize we all come from a place of hurt from the disease. This is a program of the heart, teaching us to become genuine, and dropping the façade. When engaged in conflict, do I act from a place of fear? Yes, false evidence appearing real. Use the 2 question, How can we solve the problem? Fear immobilizes us, go into a trust mode. Think and reason things out with someone else. How does my past experience with conflict influence how I deal with it today? “The past is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift”. Remember not to be a doormat. Be a turtle, pull in. One doesn’t have to be alone ever because of the fellowship, which helps to overcome fear of abandonment. Listen more, be more open to learning. Tradition Four “Each group should be autonomous, except in matters affecting another group or Al-Anon or AA as a whole”. How do we ensure harmony in our groups while encouraging divergent points of view? Put the principle out there first. Use the knowledge based decision making (KBDM) format. Allow enough time for decisions to be made. What is my business and what is not? Step back if responsibility is too much or ask for help. Harmony: everyone has a voice, so learn to listen. How can we discern when someone is expressing an opinion as opposed to trying to control the outcome? Saying the same thing over and over doesn’t mean it’s the only answer. Use the three time rule. Watch for repetition and loud voices. Have I really listened to the other point of view and considered the possibility that it may be as valid as my own? “Sometimes I want what I want prior to hearing what they want.” Remember our own opinion is also valid & we have an obligation to speak up and give our opinion to make it safe for others. Recognize when I don’t want to hear what someone else is saying. Prayer & Higher Power in all situations & interactions. Tradition Eight “Al-Anon Twelfth-Step work should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers”. How does the way I communicate fuel conflict? Does my tone of voice play a part? Use of sarcasm, tone of voice, or my expectations can fuel conflict. Don’t give advice, offer suggestions IF asked. Choose words carefully. How do expectations affect conflicts, in my experience? My expectations lead me to force solutions. Expectations are resentments ready to grow. Inviting HP in helps me to be rid of my expectations. We interpret out of our woundedness. Use Just For Today card. What role do I ask my Higher Power to play in the conflicts in my life? Let Go and Let God or keeping God First in all things. Choose your words carefully. Pray for guidance and beware of my own ego. Tradition Nine “Our groups, as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ROADRUNNER NEWSLETTER How could trying to “organize” Al-Anon cause conflict? In organizations there is a hierarchy and a boss, that’s in conflict with our Traditions. We need to look to ourselves for solutions in Al-Anon. Look at the conflict, identify it and decide the best solution. “I don’t know, then Let it Go” or “When in doubt, don’t”. Sometimes things need to be discussed but without attachment to the outcome. When in conflict, what can we do to remember that we share as equals in Al-Anon? “We are equals” read our Tradition on Unity. Use the Service Manual. How can I keep an open mind? In conflict, the loudest voice is often the only one heard. What can be done to help draw out the quieter voices? Ask for participation. Ask each member for their opinion and suggestions. Remember to use Concept 5-The rights of appeal and petition protect minorities and insure that they be heard. Tradition Twelve “Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles above personalities”. What does “presume goodwill” mean? How would my actions change if I were to presume everyone involved was trying to do their very best? We are all human and make mistakes. We get up each day and do the best we can, so does everyone else. Hurt people hurt people, we aren’t recovered we are in recovery. God lives in all of us. How do I detach from personalities and focus on principles? Pray. Look at the issue, not the person. You have a problem and it’s not mine. We are all children of God. Am I able to listen to others with an open mind; or am I discounting them because they are not in agreement with me? Look for the gift they may be offering. Listen and Learn. The opposite of what I believe may also be true. Do what your heart says. We need to learn humility. Use the first three steps. Concept Three - “The right of decision makes effective leadership possible.” Do I ever ask someone to do a task and then try to direct the details of how it should be done? If so, how can I change this pattern? Trust others to do what they are able. Rotation of service responsibilities helps. Identify with people sharing on their story and put principles above personalities. Communicate and then detach from the outcome. Read Bill W’s essay on Leadership. Do we as a group, trust our trusted servants? It is my responsibility to speak up if I’m uncomfortable, instead of expecting people to read minds. Offer praise for jobs well done. Give information, ask questions & then Let God address it. Have I shared with my group the process I used as a trusted servant in making an informed decision? Let Go and Let God, speak up, and talk it over first, before decision is made. Concept Five “The rights of appeal and petition protect minorities and insure that they be heard.” Do I truly listen to those with whom I disagree? Sometimes I do. Stop thinking that we read minds and listen to discussion. How can I keep an open mind to different ideas? Try to understand what they’re feeling. Take time to process discussion; ask for extra time if needed. Practice humility. What are the benefits of encouraging minority reports and discussing issues even when the majority agrees? What disadvantages keep us from doing it? Gives people permission to express a different opinion, when they might never have had that opportunity. It keeps the program and group and members safe. Past experiences may make people feel intimidated and not speak up until they know it is safe. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Responder no reaccionar. No diafonía. Mis expectativas me llevan a solucionar a fuerzas. Dar información, preguntar preguntas y dejárselos a Dios. -- Nancy H. T hank You For The Opportunity Of A Lifetime – I cannot adequately express how much the Love, Trust, and Support you have given me, in allowing me to be your Delegate, has meant. You have given me the opportunity to represent the New Mexico/El Paso Area at three World Service Conferences. You have given me the opportunity to face some of my darkest demons and see the Love of our program heal me and foster the growth of so many others. The bonds of Love I have formed will stay with me for the rest of my Life. I arrived at my first Conference filled with doubts about whether I belonged or was worthy of your Faith. Often at that first Conference I acted out of fear and insecurity. Yet I was still treated with Love, Respect and Acceptance. I was able to see people vigorously disagree, yet continue to treat each other with love and respect. I . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 July 2013 have witnessed the basis of decisions being premised on our Legacies (Steps, Traditions & Concepts). “Presume Goodwill” is not just an appropriate phrase, but a manner of facing divergent opinions, without becoming personally accusatory. My fears had led me to need to be right, which often manifested in needing to make others wrong. When an alternative idea was expressed, I reacted defensively. As part of my experience in being your Delegate, I am learning to listen, not to attack or criticize, but to see the merit in an alternative approach. I am seeing how when we work together, recognizing that all of us only want what is best for Al-Anon, we can do great things. Lois W. B eing an Area Chair is, for me, the most growing and personal improvement job that I have ever done in Al-Anon. I have done the job in two different areas and found the same type of growth from both. This job taught me patience, to listen to what others think, to cut off discussion when it is becoming redundant, and so much more. When planning an agenda there are always last minute additions so for me I try to schedule extra time for the standard items so there will be a possibility of fitting other things onto the agenda. Trying to get all the different opinions without expressing favoritism is one of the hardest parts of the job. I remember all too well my early days of attending an assembly and I thought those folks sitting up front were the experts. However we are not experts, we are just somewhat more experienced and perhaps have more knowledge of the Traditions and Concepts. Being able to listen with an open mind is another part of my growth. This one I may never achieve but I have gotten better at it. Organization is another skill which I am still working on but it is so much easier today. One of our slogans is "Listen and learn" but first I had to learn to listen to what others we saying and to what I was saying. When I find myself or someone else repeating themselves more than once I know that, for me at least, I am trying to convince someone of my point of view. So when others do it I tend to not listen so well. I think that perhaps the most difficult part of the job is to schedule all the issues and items that have been requested into the time frame we have for the assembly and still have time for questions and answers if there are any. Not too long ago I sent out a time frame type of message asking for help with how to work everything in but so far have not received any suggestions. I hope I get some by the AWSC meeting. Lastly, at least for now, is doing the best I can at any given time and not taking it personally when anyone disagrees with me or wants things done differently than what I am doing. It is not a difficult job but it can be a rather controversial one. Whoever does it can only do their best and it is important to remember what the AWSC (Area World Service Conference) recommends or does not recommend. It is important to give the reason as best as I can for what the AWSC is or is not recommending. Once again these folks are not experts but they do have experience with the Traditions and Concepts if we have elected the best folks to do these jobs. Hopefully as we receive resume forms this year (they are due by the beginning of September) and we share them before the election we will have a better knowledge of the background of those who want to do a certain job. Thank you for allowing me to have this growth once again and to continue to learn and grow thru doing service to this program. Luvya All, Roxy, Area Chair NM/El Paso, Panel 51 Past Delegate, Panel 27 NYS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 July 2013 LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE AFG PICNIC – June 2013 Linda H., DR for District 5 This fundraiser to benefit the Albuquerque Al-Anon Information Service Office was well organized and attended. Donations and participation by various groups in District 5 helped make this a fun and profitable venture. It was a fun day with participation by many Al-Anon members in the Albuquerque area. There was lots of visiting and good fellowship for all. And we made a reasonable profit to help the AIS. Thanks to all who helped so much! Things that worked: 1. All participating groups handled their jobs quickly and efficiently. Everyone pitched in to set up and clean up quickly. The decorations were beautiful. 2. A contract with the Recreation Center set the time boundaries. The tables and chairs went up quickly and we had plenty of air conditioned space. 3. Having a covered porch and a grassy area allowed for easy set up of games. Games played the most were the noodle toss, water balloons, tattoos, and hair coloring. The fishing game was a lot of work and not well attended. Kudos to the two leaders and the Alateen volunteers. 4. Hot dogs were preferred over the sloppy Joes. We made 80 hotdogs and 20 lbs hamburger meat. 70 hotdogs were used but only 8 lbs hamburger. We have about 10 lbs of sloppy Joes frozen. Crock pots kept the meat warm. Whole wheat buns went better than white flour. The Fried chicken went extremely well. Salads and chips were enjoyed. 5. The lemonade and ice tea in jugs ready to serve. 6. The bake sale items sold well, few left over. Things that didn’t: 1. 65 people came and we planned for 90-100. 2. There was a mix-up on how much to charge for each color of ticket – it needs to be clearer to the people manning the ticket table. 3. We had too much ice and no place to keep it frozen. 4. The fruit punch was hardly touched. 5. We needed to start selling the ice cream earlier. 6. We have paper plates, cups, utensils, and condiments left over. We only needed one container of each condiment. 4. 6. Tenemos platos de papel, vasos, utensilios, y condimentos sobrantes. Solo necesitábamos en envase de cada condimento. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ROADRUNNER NEWSLETTER GR Sharings I have been privileged to be G.R. for the last three years. I came to the job kicking and screaming. I didn't want to do what I imagined would be SO much work or have SO much responsibility, but I had heard that when you feel stuck in your program, do some service work. That was me stuck and disgruntled, near to quitting the program. I don't have room enough here to tell you all the gifts I have received. I learned I felt responsible for a lot of things that were not my responsibility. I've gotten to lessen some of my fears: the fear of not doing things well enough, the fear of conflict, the fear of rejection, the fear of asking for help. My home group and fellow G.R.'s have responded with loving kindness as I have stumbled along. I have made new friends and learned a lot from the wisdom of those who helped me along the way. My veneer of toughness, of thinking I knew so much more than others, has cracked, and I hope is falling away. I practice isolation less often. I laugh more and have more gentleness towards myself and others. Thank you to my group and my fellow travelers. Practico aislamiento menos a menudo. Note from your Editor Hello Al-Anons and Alateens: This is the summer issue and already it is quite a long one. I would like to have many sharing for the next issue of the Roadrunner. We will be having elections soon and I hope many of you will send your resume to Roxy for Roadrunner Editor. Traditionally this newsletter has had co-editors. It would be great if one of you is proficient in Spanish and the other in Computer skills what a great team you would make. I am blessed to be able to translate the sharings (always to the best of my ability and with lots of dictionary and computer help.) It doesn’t have to be perfect or very newsy, just enough to keep the membership in the know. I have enjoyed my short time as Editor for this panel. I am willing to help the next Editor. I say pray about it and pray for willingness. You can do it. Please send your sharings to [email protected] by September 15, 2013.
