The Exclamation point within an equilateral tri-
angle is intended to alert the user to the pres-
ence of important operating and maintenance
(servicing) instructions in the literature accom-
panying the product.
The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol
within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert
the user of the presence of uninsulated "dan-
gerous voltage" within the product's enclosure
that may be of sufficient magnitude to consti-
tute a risk of electric shock.

WARNING - When using electronic products, basic precautions

1 . Read all Safety and Installation Instructions, Supplemental Marking and Spe-
cial Message Section data, and assembly instructions (where applicable)
BEFORE using your Yamaha electronic product. Check unit weight specifica-
tions before you attempt to move this instrument!
2. Main Power Supply Verification: Your Yamaha electronic product has been
manufactured specifically for the main supply voltage used in your area. If you
should move, or if any doubt exists, please contact your dealer for instructions.
The main supply voltage required by your electronic product is printed on the
name plate. For name plate location see graphic in Special Message Section.
3. This product may be equipped with a polarized line plug (one blade wider
than the other). If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact an
electrician to have your obsolete outlet replaced.Do NOT defeat the safety pur-
pose of the plug. Yamaha products not having polarized plugs incorporate
construction methods and designs that do not require line plug polarization.
4. WARNING - Do NOT place objects on your electronic product's power
cord or place the unit a position where anyone could trip over, walk over, or roll
anything over cords of any kind. Do NOT allow your electronic product or its
bench to rest on or be installed over cords of any type. Improper installations of
this type create the possibility of a fire hazard and/or personal injury.
B. Environment: Your electronic product should be installed away from heat
sources such as a radiator, heat registers and/or other products that produce
heat. Additionally, the unit should not be located in a position that exposes the
cabinet to direct sunlight , or air currents having high humidity or heat levels.
6. Your Yamaha electronic product should be placed so that its location or
position does not interfere with its proper ventilation.
7. Some Yamaha electronic products may have benches that are either a part
of the product or supplied as an optional accessory. Some of these benches are
designed to be dealer assembled. Please make sure that the bench is stable
before using it. The bench supplied by Yamaha was designed for seating only.
No other uses are recommended.
8. Some Yamaha electronic products can be made to operate with or without
the side panels or other components that constitute a stand. These products
should be used only with the components supplied or a cart or stand that is
recommended by the manufacturer.
9. This product, either alone or in combination with an amplifier and headphones
or speakers, may be capable of producing sound levels that could cause perma-
nent hearing loss. Do not operate for a long period of time at a high volume level or
at a level that is uncomfortable. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the
ears, you should consult an audiologist.

environments. For example, near a swimming pool, spa,or in a wet
basement.

not spilied, into the enclosure through openings.

fied service person when:
a. The power-supply cord or plug has been damaged: or
b. Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the product: or
c. The product has been exposed to rain: or
d. The product does not operate, exhibits a marked change in per-
formance: or
- ©. The product has been dropped, or the enclosure of the product has
been damaged.
13. When not in use, always turn your Yamaha electronic product
"OFF". The power-supply cord of the product should be unplugged
from the outlet when it is to be left unused for a long period of time.
Notes:In this case, some units may lose some user programmed data.
Factory programmed memories will not be affected.
14. Do not attempt to service the product beyond that described in
the user-maintenance instructions. All other servicing should be re-
ferred to qualified service personnel.

Main Features
Your Yamaha Electone is packed with many sophisticated functions. Yet it is amazingly easy to use.
The main features are briefly described here so that you can quickly understand the capabilities of
your Electone.
Included among the main features are:
Astoundingly True-to-life Sounds
The new AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) and FM (Frequency Modulation) tone generation technologies
combined with authentic touch response for individual instrument voices, make this Electone a truly expres-
sive musical instrument.
Limitless Variety of Organ Sounds
The Electone also has separate voice sections that feature classic organ sounds — from jazz and pop to
church and theater — and lets you easily create your own organ sounds by adjusting the volumes of the
various flute footages. (See page 24.)
High-quality Digital Effects
Electone voices can also be enhanced with a full range of high-quality digital effects, including Tremolo (for
reproducing the sound of a rotating speaker), Reverb, and (on the EL-60) Flanger and Delay. (See page 27.)
Dynamic Rhythm Patterns
The Rhythm section of the Electone features authentic drum and percussion sounds, used by expert rhythm
programmers in creating a total of 66 rhythm patterns, ranging across all styles of music. (See page 38.) A
Keyboard Percussion function is also provided for playing the realistic percussion sounds from the Lower
keyboard and Pedalboard. (See page 50.)
Comprehensive Automatic Accompaniment
The Electone 1s also equipped with various automatic accompaniment functions, including Auto Bass Chord,
Accompaniment, Melody On Chord and the exciting SoloStyle feature. Together or individually, they pro-
vide entertaining and inspiring instrumental backing and embellishments for your performance. (See pages
46—53.)
Wide Variety of Registration Menus
The Electone is equipped with convenient Registration Menus that allow you to instantly change all settings
for the entire instrument in real time, as you play. Each Registration has been specially created by profes-
sional Electone artists to match virtually any style of music you play. The EL-60 has 80 registrations avail-
able on disk, while the EL-40 has 61 registrations and Organ Select presets built in. (See page 8.)
Recording of Performances with the Music Disk Recorder (EL-60)
The EL-60 Electone also features a Music Disk Recorder for recording your performances. (The Music Disk
Recorder is available as an option for the EL-40.) The recording is completely digital and is stored to disk,
which means that no matter how many times you play back the recording, it will always sound exactly the
same as the original performance. (See page 68.)
Sophisticated Rhythm Pattern and Rhythm Sequence Programming (EL-60)
The Rhythm Pattern Programmer and Rhythm Sequence Programmer let you use the realistic Keyboard
Percussion sounds, along with 32 additional percussion sounds, to create and record your own rhythm pat-
terns, then combine them (and the preset rhythms, if you wish) to make complete automatic rhythm tracks.

Quick Introductory Guide
PLAYING YOUR EL-60/40 ELECTONE
Whether you are an advanced Electone performer or have never touched an electronic keyboard in your
life, we recommend that you take the time to go through this basic section. It shows you in the simplest
possible manner how to start playing your Electone. The basic operations and functions that you learn in
this section will also be important when you later use the Electone's more advanced features.
Getting Started
Once you ve set up your Electone and plugged the power cord into an electrical outlet, you're ready to get started
and play.
1 e Turn on the Electone by pressing the POWER switch.
When you turn on the Electone, the following displays will appear
in succession in the LCD:

This last display, Voice Display, shows the currently assigned voice
settings for each voice section of the instrument, with the abbreviation
for each voice section beside the voice name: Upper (M), Lower([}),
Lead (NM), and Pedalboard ([).
Turning the Electone off erases all panel settings you have made. When the Electone is turned on, Basic
Registration 1 is automatically selected. If you have made panel settings you wish to keep, save them to
Registration Memory (see page54) before turning the Electone off. You can, however, restore the panel
settings that were made before the Electone was last turned off. In doing this, first be careful NOT to press
any panel buttons (excepting those in Basic Registration) after you turn the Electone back on. Then, to
restore the previous settings, hold down the M (Memory) button and press the D (Disable) button.
2. Setthe MASTER VOLUME control.
The MASTER VOLUME control is an overall control which affects the
volume of the entire instrument.
3. Press the Expression pedal down with your foot.
The Expression pedal also controls the entire volume of the Electone.
Once you have set the MASTER VOLUME control to a suitable level,
you can use the Expression pedal to change the volume with your foot as
you play.

For now, press the pedal down slightly beyond the halfway point.
Playing Your Electone

Set the control to roughly this position.
This is the normal playing level.
Your new Electone is fully equipped with an exceptionally wide variety of voices, rhythms, effects and other
convenient functions. Since it may take some time to master the wealth of features available, the Electone in-
cludes convenient Registrations that let you completely and instantly change the voices and other settings for all
of the keyboards, even as you play. Each registration is pre-programmed to be used for a specific music style or
instrumental combination.
‘Basic Registrations
The Basic Registration section has five factory preset registrations, each
with a different set of voices for the Upper/Lower keyboards and Ped-
alboard and each specially suited for playing in a different music style.
When you turn the power on, the Electone automatically selects Basic
Registration 1. If another registration has been selected (the lamp on the
button will be lit), press the button for Basic Registration 1.

Registration Menu
In addition to the Basic Registrations, many more registrations are available on your Electone. These regis-
trations include voice and rhythm selections and have been specially created by professional Electone per-
formers to suit a variety of music styles. With the variety of registrations available, you're certain to find the
right registration that perfectly suits any style of music you play.
There are certain differences in this function between the EL-40 and the EL-60. Please read the instructions
that correspond to the particular model you own.
EL-40
Registration Menu / Organ Select — EL-40
The EL-40 is equipped with a total of 46 specially programmed
registrations, selected with the Registration Menu button on the
panel. The EL-40 also has an Organ Select function that lets you
call up one of 15 different organ combinations.
To select a registration from Registration Menu, or an organ
sound from Organ Select:
1 e Press the corresponding button on the panel (REGIST. нет
MENU or ORGAN SELECT).
2. From the display that appears, select the desired registra-
tion or organ sound.
: Jumps back ten numbers.
: Jumps ahead ten numbers.

The bottom left Data Control buttons step through the various selec-
tions, while the top left Data Control buttons are used to jump ahead
or back by ten selections.

You can now play the registration or organ sound. If you wish, try
out some of the other selections by repeating the above steps. Then,
skipping the section on the EL-60 below, go on to step #4 in the
following section, and try out the rhythm and accompaniment fea-
tures of your Electone (page 11). ;
A separate chart included with this manual provides a list of all the
available music styles, along with the rhythm patterns used.
EL-60
Registration Menu Disk — EL-60
Included with your EL-60 is a Registration Menu Disk. The disk
features a total of 80 specially programmed registrations, including
16 organ combinations, which can be selected with the Music Disk
Recorder.
The 80 registrations have five pages and are divided into five cate-

Rhythms are an important part of each registration. Each registration s
rhythm has been carefully chosen and programmed to best match the
particular music style.
The A.B.C. (Auto Bass Chord) automatic accompaniment feature of the
Electone also plays an important role and is used in conjunction with the
registrations and rhythm patterns. Like the rhythm patterns, A.B.C.
patterns have been programmed to best match the selected registration.
They allow you to add sophisticated bass and chord accompaniment
patterns that suit the music, simply by playing chords on the Lower
keyboard.
To use the A.B.C. automatic accompaniment feature:
5 e Press a chord on the Lower keyboard. (Try the chord shown in
the illustration on the right.)
This function provides automatic accompaniment specially tailored for
the music style in which you play. Notice that even after you release
your fingers from the keyboard, the chord and accompaniment patterns
continue to sound. For more details on automatic accompaniment, see
page47.

Registrations section above. (See page 7.) Select the registration
indicated at the top right of the score (for example, "Pops Orch 1" in

The many sophisticated functions of the EL-60/40 are shown and controlled from the LCD display. The LCD
display lets you see at-a-glance the current settings of the selected functions.
This section introduces you to the control functions and conventions of the LCD display, allowing you to
operate your new Electone quickly and effectively.

The Data Control buttons are nearly always used in the ways you've
seen in the above steps. You'll have noticed that the left button of a Data
Control button pair is usually used in à "negative" fashion — for
instance, to decrease a value, or select a previous setting or position,
The right button is used in a "positive" fashion — to increase a value, or
select the next setting or position. In some cases, the buttons are also
used to tum functions on and off.

There are two ways to call up LCD displays: One is by pressing the
panel's voice/rhythm buttons or the sustain controls; the other is by
pressing the DISPLAY SELECT buttons.
The LEDs above the buttons momentarily flash when the buttons are
pressed. The LEDs of the UPPER/LOWER FLUTE VOICE and
TREMOLO (FAST) buttons remain lit when the buttons are pressed
(indicating ON status) and turn off when pressed again.

controls: Coarse and Fine.
Coarse: Use the VOLUME controls of each voice section on the
panel to set the desired level for each voice. The controls have seven

ABOUT VOICE SECTION VOLUMES:
The Upper Keyboard and Lead voices (when not using the "To Lower" function) sound together in a layer,
and the balance of the voices in the layer is determined by the VOLUME controls of each section. In order
to hear or audition one voice section, set the volume of the other voice section to the minimum level.

Selecting Additional Voices — Dotted Buttons and User
Voices
The EL-60/40 Electone has a variety of voices from which you can choose — far greater than what is immediately
apparent from the front panel controls. You've already learned in the section above how to select the different
voices that are available in the Voice Menu display of each panel voice. The Electone also has dotted buttons in
each voice section, giving you access to even more voices. Optional Voice Disk voices are also available for
storing to User Voices (EL-60, or EL-40 equipped with the optional Music Disk Recorder).
Selecting Voices From the Dotted Buttons
Each voice section has one or two dotted buttons, found on the right side of each voice section. These dotted
buttons function as "wild card” Voice Menu selectors; any internal or User voices can be selected from these
buttons.
The dotted buttons have the following basic uses:
1 ) For playing any voice of the Voice Menus from any of the key-
boards or Pedalboard. You can play on the Upper keyboard, for ex-
ample, voices from the twenty-two Voice Menu pages (including User),
and not be limited to only the twelve buttons (equivalent to twelve Voice
Menu pages) that make up the Upper Voice section. Another advantage
to this feature is that when the normally monophonic (one note) Lead
and Pedal voices are assigned to the Upper or Lower keyboard voice
sections, they can be played polyphonically.
2) For having three different voices from the same Voice Menu page
available for selection in the same song. For example, you can assign
one of the voices to a dotted button in the Upper Keyboard Voice sec-
tion, the second voice to the other dotted button in the same section, and
the third one on the Voice Menu.

The Flute Voice feature allows you to create your own organ voices, ol |
giving you access to an unlimited combination of organ sounds, With
this function, you can recreate all of the classic organ sounds by adjusting the Mute footage levels and the

This page allows you to select Preset Flute Voice voices, Eight factory-
preset voices (four Jazz Organ and four Pop Organ voices) are provided.
R Select the desired voice with the bottom left Data Control but-
tons and use the bottom right Data Control buttons to actually call
up the selected voice for playing.
