Birth & Up Zn Baby Travel — **® Health Care Kit NASAL ASPIRATOR HOW TO USE: 1. Squeeze bulb to expel air. 2. Place nasal tip to baby's nostril with tip curved upwards and aspirator bulb away from baby's face. 3. Gradually release pressure on bulb. Mucus will flow into nasal tip as bulb expands. 4. Repeat for other nostril. 5. If mucus is excessive, consult physician. AFTER USING: 1. Remove cap from bulb and wash both parts in warm, soapy water. Rinse thor- oughly. Let stand to dry. 2. Store in a cool, dry place. Always keep vinyl products away from heat, hot sur- faces and sharp edges. To insert cap into bulb, rub a small amount of petroleum jelly on inside rim of bulb. Squeeze bulb to expel air, and insert cap with a twisting motion. EAR SYRINGE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE: * Upon doctor's recommendation, fill syringe with warm (about body tempera- ture) water or suggested solution. * Child should be seated, with a small basin held under the ear to catch any returning fluid. Tilt head slightly to the side so that ear to be cleared faces up. * Gently pull earlobe down and back to expose ear canal. Place tip of syringe at opening of ear canal, pointing slightly upward toward side of ear canal rather than straight into ear drum. * Squeeze fluid gently into canal. Never use force to inject fluid. CAUTION: Never irrigate ears if bleeding or drainage is present. Discontinue use if child experiences dizziness or pain. Do not resume irrigation without first consulting physician. WARNING: Use only plain tap water or a doctor recommended solution. Any other fluid may cause injury or damage the syringe. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of syringe. Avoid exposure to direct heat or sunlight, as it will alter the shape and effectiveness of the syringe. WASHING INSTRUCTIONS: Wash thoroughly in warm, soapy water. Rinse well and let dry. Store in cool, dry place. MEDICINE SPOON WASHING INSTRUCTIONS: Wash.in warm, soapy water before first use and after each use. MEDI-DROPPER DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Child should be in a sitting position when administering any liquid medications. TO CLEAN: Separate tube from cap and wash in warm, soapy water. Rinse well. MERCURY FEVER THERMOMETER BODY TEMPERATURE A child's normal temperature will be between 97.5°F and 100.5°F The highest temperature usually occurs in the afternoon, from several tenths to one full degree higher than in the morning. HOW TO TAKE YOUR CHILD'S TEMPERATURE Grasp clean thermometer and point mercury bulb downward. Shake thermometer vigorously with a wrist-snapping action until it reads 96°F. ORAL reading: Place bulb end of thermometer under tongue toward back of the mouth. Hold in place for approximately three minutes. RECTAL reading: Dip thermometer in petroleum jelly and insert bulb end about one inch into rectum. Place a hand on buttocks and hold thermometer loosely between two fingers for three to four minutes. A rectal temperature is usually about one degree F higher than an oral reading. UNDERARM reading: Place bulb end of thermometer under child's arm and hold arm against body for about four minutes. An underarm reading is usually about one degree F below an oral reading. WASHING INSTRUCTIONS Before and after each use, clean thermometer with cold, soapy water and rinse in cold water. DO NOT clean or rinse in warm or hot water. Disinfect with alcohol. CAUTION: DO NOT WASH IN HOT WATER OR EXPOSE TO DIRECT SUN- LIGHT OR HEAT; THIS AFFECTS THE ACCURACY AND MAY CAUSE THE BULB TO CRACK OR BREAK.
