About Voice Recognition
Your navigation device in your Mazda car offers an advanced speech recognition environment that allows you to control functions of the device using your voice.
This offers a convenient and safe way to control the device while driving.
This document shows you how to get the best from the Voice Recognition feature.
Using Voice Recognition, your device recognises what you are saying based on the language you selected during device setup. For navigation purposes, other available information such as possible addresses and city names are taken into account to achieve the best possible performance.
Occasionally, Voice Recognition may not behave as expected. This document also includes suggestions on how to improve the recognition of your spoken commands and addresses.

Mazda Voice Recognition Setup
Apart from Voice Recognition for the navigation system, there is also voice recognition available for other functions such as the car radio and telephone module. These items are optional so please check the availability for your car.
Voice recognition for infotainment is started using the push-to-talk button on the steering-wheel - this may depend on your car model.
An example for the Mazda CX-5 is shown in the picture to the left. Refer to your car manuals to find the button to start voice recognition.
You then see the following screen on the display in your car:
When prompted, say
“Navigation” to go to
Voice Recognition for your navigation device.
You cannot say navigation commands when this screen is shown. Say “Navigation” first.

Previously, we told you how to use the push-to-talk button on the steering wheel to start infotainment voice recognition and then to use the “Navigation” command to go to the navigation Voice Recognition input screen.
The alternative is to use the microphone icon on the
Driving View screen to start Voice Recognition. The navigation system then goes directly to the Voice
Recognition “Command and Control” screen as shown below.
The navigation system plays a beep when it is ready to listen to your input. Please wait for this beep before starting to speak. In general you hear an announcement such as “Say a command” and then the beep. In a few cases, for example for confirmation screens, only the beep is played. When the device is ready for input the sound level is shown by the bar on the left. If you speak too loudly it will turn red. If you speak too softly there will be no bar shown. In a few cases the bar is not shown.
Command and Control
In the Command and Control screen you can say commands to get instructions to a POI, go to the address-input screen, increase or decrease volume etc.
You cannot say an address or say “Drive to Main Street,
Houston, Texas”. Address input is done in the address input screen. More information on this can be found later in this guide.
You do not have to remember specific voice commands for your navigation device. For each command, there are a number of possible commands that you can say. For example, to make the instructions louder you can say any of the following commands:
• Increase volume
• Turn up Volume
• Turn volume up
• Louder
Tip: If you experience problems with the recognition of a command you can try using a similar but different command to achieve the same results.

Useful Commands
This is an overview of the most useful commands for navigation.
Setting a destination
• Directions to an address
• Directions to the city center
• Nearest <brandname>
• Nearest <POI-category>
• Drive to Home
• Navigate to recent destination
Guides you to the next screen to enter an address.
Asks for the city to guide to.
Use one of the 400 known brandnames (US only, see
Apendix).
Use any of the POI categories (see Apendix).
Drive to the address set as your Home-location.
Provides a list of recent destinations, then you choose the number in the list.
Guidance Commands

Calculates a different route to the current destination.
Asks for length of roadblock will recalculate a route avoiding the roadblock.
Reads aloud traffic information depending on availability.

Creates a new route using the waypoint. See address input for possible locations.

Allows you to report a speed-camera. This is not supported in all countries.

Example:
Setting a destination by using an address
Your navigation device can understand one-step address entry. This means that you can speak a full address in one pass. For example:
“1 2 3 4 Main Street, Washington, Baltimore”
The house number is best spoken in single digits, for example “1” “2” “3” “4” but you can also use “12” “34”.
It is important to speak the address fluently and not to be silent for too long between parts of the address. Make sure not to use additional words like
“Uh”, “in <city>“ or “no, it is ….”.
When you make a mistake, please wait for the system to finish and answer “Start over” to the next prompt.
You can click “More info” to see a list of possible commands but do not do this while driving.
For the rest of the screens shown during route calculation, you can also use your voice to control the screen. For example, when the device asks you about using toll-roads you can say “No” instead of touching the screen.
“Navigate to an address”
“1234 Main street, …..”
The device matched your voice input with a list of possible addresses. You can now say:
The device matched your input with a single address being the best match. You can now say:
• 1..5 -> selects the item in list.
• Start over -> New input.
• Cancel -> Abort completely.
• Yes -> Address is used.
• No -> You can change parts such as city name or street.
• Say “Change street name”, “Change city” to change parts of the given address.
• Start Over->New input.

If you select “No” for this screen you move to the next screen. Here you can use the commands to change the house number, street name, city or state.
IIf you select “Change streetname” or any of the other “Change” commands from either of the two screens above you see the screen on the right.
Speak the corrected streetname or city. After doing so you will go back to either of the two screens above where you came from.

Setting a destination using
POI or brand name
You can navigate to a Point of Interest (POI) or a limited set of brandnames using your voice.
You can say for example:
• Navigate to nearest Shell
• Navigate to gas station
• Take me to McDonalds
• Instructions for restaurant
This document includes a list of brand names and
POI categories that are known to your device.

If you make a mistake, please wait for the system to finish and say “‘Start over” in response to the next prompt.

Improving the recognition
Here are a list of tips that you can use to improve the recognition of your spoken commands.
• It is very important to speak in a normal voice.
• Do not speak louder or softer than when you speak with another person.
• Do not try to articulate more than normal.
• Speak directly after the beep.
• Try to use a different command to get the same result. For example, to drive to an address you can say:
• Drive to an address
• Take me to
• Instructions for
• Navigate to
• Do not use long pauses between words or your device may assume that you have finished talking.
• Do not use ‘Uh’, ’mm’ or other words that can confuse your device. Your device will try to match them with commands.
• Do not try to correct mistakes, for example, by saying “five no six”. When you make a mistake, wait and then say “start over” at the next prompt.
• During address input, do not use “in <city name>“, just say the city name.
• Make sure that no music is playing in the background. Your radio mutes automatically.
• Other sources of speech such as passengers in the back of your car or the phone in hands-free mode may confuse the system.
• In very noisy conditions you may get better results speaking towards the microphone.
• If your command or address is not understood you may want to try to speak it a little differently. This may be sufficient for it to be recognised.
• If an address is recognised it is shown on the screen. To correct any errors, you can say
“Change street” or “Change city name” directly from this screen.
• When it is not possible to enter a specific address, please check if the address exists by entering it manually. Voice Recognition can only find addresses that are known to the device.

‘No’ to answer questions.
