Kenro 4-in-1 Photo & Film Scanner KNSC301

Before using the film scanner, please read this manual carefully for a full understanding of how to use it safely and correctly.

Safety information

1. Important: To prolong the life of this product, do not expose it to rain or moisture.

2. Caution: Do not disassemble this unit. To prevent the risk of electric shock, do not remove cover.

3. Ventilation: The device should be located to allow for proper ventilation. For example, do not situate on a bed, sofa, rug or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings.

4. Heat: The device should be situated away from heat sources, such as radiators or stoves.

5. Cleaning: Use a clean, dry, non-alcohol cotton swab to clean the glass surface periodically in order to ensure a clear image.

6. Non-use period: The USB cord for the device should be unplugged from the computer when the unit is left unused for a long period of time.

7. USB overloading: To ensure that there is enough available power to operate the scanner, do not overload the USB connections on your computer with too many devices at once.

8. Servicing: Do not attempt to service your device beyond the means described in this manual. All servicing should be done by a qualified person.

Please note: The design of the film holder follows ISO* standards. In some cases, the holes on the film may not match exactly to the alignment of the holder. This is caused by a non-standard camera and will result in a small black line on the edge of the frame, which can be easily cropped out using photo editing software.

For environmental protection and energy conservation, the device will power off automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Loading slides

Hold the slide up to the light, with the trademark side facing away from you. When you look through the slide, the image should appear the correct way round, not a mirror image.

Rotate the slide 180 degrees, turning the slide so that the image is upside down while still looking at the same side.

With the slide holder laid open, place the slide into the recessed area in the holder. The slide should fi t perfectly.

Note: Handle slides with care. Any dust, scratches or fi ngerprints will show on your saved images.

We highly recommend that you wear cotton gloves when handling and use Kenair Clean Air Duster to remove any dust on the slide.

Close the slide holder and press the edges so that it locks in place.

Hold it in the position shown above, then insert the slide holder into the slot on the right side of the fi lm & photo scanner.

Loading negatives

Hold the negative up to the light. As you look through, you should be able to read the small negative numbers normally, not a mirror image.

Rotate the negative 180 degrees, turning it so that the image is upside down while still looking at the same side.

With the negative holder laid open, place the negative into the holder so that the notches line up.

Note: Handle negatives with care. Any dust, scratches or fingerprints will show on your saved images. We highly recommend that you wear cotton gloves when handling and use Kenair Clean Air

Duster to remove any dust on the negative.

Close the negative holder and press the edges so that it locks in place.

Hold it in the position shown above, then insert the negative holder into the slot on the right side of the film & photo scanner.

The design of the negative holder follows ISO (International Organisation for

If this is the case, there will be a small black line on the edge of the frame that can be easily cropped out using photo editing software.

Loading photos

Position the brackets according to the marked dimensions on the photo tray. Note that for 7x5” photographs, the brackets do not need to be fitted into the photo tray.

Place the brackets into the slots and slide them downwards to secure. Check that they are securely fastened by turning the photo tray upside down. The brackets should not fall off.

Insert the item to be scanned into the appropriate-sized photo tray (7x5”, 6x4”,

3.5x5” or business card).

Insert the photo tray into the photo tray slot on top of the film & photo scanner.

Note:

• Please use the provided OCR CD to format business cards.

• Handle photos with care. Any dust, scratches or fingerprints will be visible on your saved images.

• Scanned business cards will be captured with a standard dimension of 91x55mm.

The scanned image will have a slight border around the outside edge.

Quick start guide

Note: There may be some slight differences between the preview image and the saved image. Please check the image that has been saved to the SD card.

1. If you want to scan film, please move the two switches on the top of the device to the left side. If you want to scan photos, please move them to the right side.

2. Insert the item to be scanned into the appropriate tray.

3. Insert the tray into the correct slot.

4. Connect the scanner to a power source, PC or mains, via the included USB cable, and press the POWER button to turn on.

5. An LED indicator light will show which scan mode is selected: photo or film.

6. Follow the on-screen menu for scanning. Remember to move both slide switches on top of the unit to left or right to set film or photo scan mode (a notification will appear on-screen to remind you of this). When scanning of all items is complete, remove the SD card.

Note: The scanner has a built-in 97 MB memory for saving scans, but when an SD card is inserted, this will always have priority.

Home / MODE: No memory card

If there is no memory card inserted into the device, a warning icon will be shown on screen when entering the main menu. A memory card is not essential to operation, as the scanner has an internal memory of 97 MB, however depending on size and resolution of scans, this could fill up quickly.

1. Capture

After the welcome page, one of the menus pictured on page 7 will appear, depending on whether you are in film scanner or photo scanner mode. You can use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons for the desired menu item, then press the

ENTER button to confirm your selection.

1.1 Capture: Adjust brightness and colour of image

The brightness and colour of the image will be adjusted automatically when captured, but if you wish to make further adjustments, you can.

In capture mode, press the ENTER button to bring up this screen (pictured, right):

EV means brightness; R means red, G means green, B means blue. Each can be adjusted individually up to +/- 2.

Press the ENTER button to switch between EV, R, G and B. Press LEFT / RIGHT buttons to adjust the data.

Press the SCAN button to return to image preview mode.

1.2 Capture: Mirror / flip

If an image has been loaded incorrectly, it is possible to mirror or flip it before capturing. The view will be adjusted accordingly. Mirror and flip functions can only be used while in the live view mode.

Press the LEFT key to mirror the image (horizontal).

1.3 Capture: Live view and edit mode

Once you have entered capture mode, you will see an icon in the top left corner to indicate live view mode (circled).

In this mode you can adjust colour and brightness

(as per instructions in section 1.1) or mirror / flip the image (as per instructions in section 1.2).

1.4 Capture: Save menu

When you are happy with your preview in live view, press the SCAN button, which will bring up the save menu, as below, with the save button already highlighted.

Cancel without saving Return to home screen

To save the captured image to your SD card (or the internal memory if no SD card is inserted), press ENTER. The image will save and return you to live view mode.

Use the LEFT / RIGHT keys to highlight the ‘Cancel’ or ‘Return to home screen’ icons if you wish to exit your scan without saving the captured image. You can also press the MODE button on top of the device to return to the main menu at any time.

1.5 Capture: Memory full

Once your SD card or internal memory is full, a

‘memory full’ icon will be displayed on the screen

(pictured, right) when you press the SCAN button.

To free up space and continue to capture, either download some images to your PC, or replace the memory card.

2. Playback

From the menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to navigate to playback mode (pictured, top right). Press ENTER to confirm selection.

2.1 Playback: Auto slide show

Once you enter playback mode, the scanner will default to the auto slide show setting. An icon in the top left corner of the screen will indicate that the scanner is in playback mode (pictured, bottom right, icon circled)

The screen will sequentially display all images stored on the internal memory or the SD card at

2-second intervals. The slide show can be paused by pressing the ENTER button.

Please note, playback mode will only display images captured by the scanner, even if other images are present on the SD card.

2.2 Playback: Single picture scroll

When you press the ENTER button to pause the slide show, you can scroll through pictures individually by using the LEFT and RIGHT buttons.

2.3 Playback: Edit menu

For images stored to the SD card, it is possible to make edits to saved pictures. In single picture scroll mode as described in section 2.2, select the image you want to edit by using the LEFT and RIGHT buttons, then press the ENTER button to enter edit mode.

2.3.1 Playback: Edit menu: Rotate / Save

Use the arrow keys to navigate to the desired rotation (clockwise or anticlockwise) and press the ENTER button to rotate. The cursor will automatically move to the save icon. To save changes and return to slideshow, press ENTER again. To rotate again, repeat the steps above.

2.3.2 Playback: Edit menu: Delete

Use the arrow keys to navigate to the delete icon. To delete the selected image, press the ENTER button. The present image will be deleted, and the next picture will be shown, with the cursor moving to the exit icon.

2.3.3 Playback: Edit menu: Exit

Use the arrow keys to navigate to the exit icon and press ENTER to exit back to the slide show without saving any changes.

2.3.4 Playback: Edit menu: Home

Use the arrow keys to navigate to the home icon, and press ENTER to exit to the main menu. Alternatively, you can press the MODE button on top of the scanner at any point to return to the main menu.

2.4 Playback: No picture

If there are no images available for the scanner to display, a ‘no picture’ symbol will show on the screen

(pictured, right).

3. Film type

When the film scanner mode is selected, the user can change film type by entering the film type options from the main menu. Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to navigate to the film type icon (pictured, below), and press the ENTER button to confirm.

Three options will be displayed (pictured, below). Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to select your film type, then press the ENTER button to confirm. Options are:

1. Colour negatives

2. Slides

3. Black and white negatives

In photo scanner mode, the user can switch between colour or black and white scanning, by entering the effect options from the main menu. Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to navigate to the effects icons and press the ENTER button to confirm.

Two options will be displayed (pictured, below). Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to select your colour effect, then press the ENTER button to confirm. Options are:

1. Colour

2. Black and white

5. Crop proportion

In photo scanner mode, the user can change the crop proportion by entering the crop options from the main menu. Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to navigate to the crop icon (pictured, below), and press the ENTER button to confirm.

Four options will be displayed (pictured, below). Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to select your crop proportion, then press the ENTER button to confirm. Options are:

1. 5R (7x5” photo)

2. 4R (6x4” photo)

3. 3R (3.5x5” photo)

4. Business card

6. Resolution

The scan resolution can be changed between 5M and 10M. Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to navigate to the resolution icon (pictured, below), and press the ENTER button to confirm.

Two options will be displayed (pictured, below). Use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to select your resolution, then press the ENTER button to confirm. Options are:

1. 5M

2. 10M

7. Language

To change the operating language, select the language options from the main menu by using the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to navigate to the language options icon

(pictured, below) and pressing ENTER to confirm.

You can then use the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to select your language, and press the ENTER button to confirm. Options are: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified

Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese.

8. USB mode

Once you have finished scanning and capturing your images, you can remove the

SD card from the scanner to insert it into the PC and download your images.

Alternatively, you can connect the scanner to the PC using the USB cable and enter mass storage mode to transfer the images. When the device is connected, select the mass storage mode by using the LEFT / RIGHT buttons to navigate to the USB icon (pictured, below) and pressing ENTER to confirm.

The scanner will then become a mass storage device and be discoverable by the connected PC.

9. Troubleshooting

Q: There is a stripe at the edge of my image.

A: Gently adjust the position of the slide holder until the stripe is no longer visible on the preview. If the problem persists, please contact Kenro for technical support.

Q: The device cannot connect to my PC.

A: If there is no power to the device, please check the connections at each end of your USB cable to ensure that it is properly and firmly fitted to both the scanner and the PC. If connections are firm and secure but the problem persists, try a different USB port on your PC. It may help to use a slot on the back that connects directly to the motherboard, rather than the front panel. If there is power to the device, but the PC fails to recognise it, follow the steps in section 8 (page 14). If the problem persists, please contact Kenro for technical support.
