This business intelligence engine leverages industry leading technology for the monitoring, reporting, and analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs) with unique insight from the Cisco VDS TC cache engines. The core of the Cisco VDS TC Analytics solution consists of KPIs and a Cache Detail Record (CDR) database, which the VDS TC Analytics server uses to collect and store information from the Cisco VDS TC cache engines. Cisco VDS TC systems on the network are connected to the foundation over the ISP management network. Details from these cache engines are aggregated and analyzed to enable a network-wide view of traffic, as it is delivered from the perspective of the VDS TC cache engines. Administrators access this information through a central Cisco VDS TC Analytics server by viewing dashboards and pre-defined reports, and can perform on-demand analysis of the network. Analysis is delivered for all levels of the organization in a variety of displays. Different report packages are available for various levels of the organization: • Network engineers obtain the details required for managing and expanding their networks. • The finance department can gain visibility into savings and growth planning. • Executives can draw summaries based on media trends and subscriber patterns • The marketing team can acquire insight necessary to develop new products and services. Information is presented as webpage dashboards, which provide quick access to information, or in PDF and HTML formats. This preface describes terminology that is used in the Cisco VDS TC Analytics Software. This preface contains: • Overview • Cisco VDS TC Analytics Architecture • Terminology • Obtaining Documentation and Submitting a Service Request Overview The VDS TC Analytics data collection engine and data intelligence system produces custom reports about the media that flows through the entire pipeline. These reports are designed to provide analytical answers to key business questions, such as: Cisco Videoscape Distribution Suite Transparent Caching Analytics Software Release 2.5.0 Installation Guide v Preface Cisco VDS TC Analytics Architecture • Content type distribution • The percentage of users driving bandwidth growth • New and potential services • P2P class of service • The popularity of users by protocols or services • Individual system output • Cache consumption • IP addresses of the highest volume users • Services that are consumed by the highest volume users • Number of requests • Overall load balance VDS TC Analytics translates the data that is generated by VDS TC cache engines and displays it in charts and data tables designated according to specific Cisco VDS TC Analytics user groups, such as network engineers and operators, marketing personnel, and executives. For each organizational user group, VDS TC Analytics presents pertinent information in predefined sets of displays. The At a Glance dashboard is the summary page that opens for each of the user groups, delivering an immediate overview at patterns and trends. At a Glance reports present the daily summaries for the time frame you select, according to daily average values, breaking down the information by services and protocols. Plotted comparisons of information visually convey the behavior of traffic, as it is served from the VDS TC cache engine (cache traffic) and from the world (clear traffic). You can easily list all charted data in numerical values to enhance your insight. From this personalized dashboard look, you can drill down for more detailed analysis available through the Data Mining dashboard. The Data Mining reports offer advanced filtering capabilities, according to five minute polling, for the comparison of KPIs across services and protocols over any time frame. Aggregate views for the entire network can be compared by IP address, zone, POP, or individual VDS TC systems. You can save or print every chart and data table in PDF or HTML format. Cisco VDS TC Analytics Architecture Network Connectivity Cisco VDS TC Analytics is connected to the network, providing access to Cisco VDS-TC platforms. VDS TC Analytics offers advanced filtering options and data manipulation to provide the user with insight on traffic trends and patterns. Figure 2 Software Architecture Diagram Cisco Videoscape Distribution Suite Transparent Caching Analytics Software Release 2.5.0 Installation Guide vii Preface Terminology Terminology The VDS TC Analytics Terminology table describes terms and concepts that apply to the VDS TC Analytics Software. Table 1 VDS TC Analytics Terminology Term Description AVG Average Bytes Hit Ratio (BHR) The number of bytes of cached out traffic divided by the total number of bytes of traffic, whether it was cached or not. For example, a 60% bytes hit ratio means that 60% of the overall bandwidth came from the cache and 40% came from the world. cache in A connection where the object requested by a subscriber does not exist in the cache (which creates a “miss”), and the requested incoming data from the world is stored in the cache. cache Traffic served only from VDS TC. cache out A connection where the object requested by a subscriber exists in the cache (which creates a “hit”), and the request is served from the cache as outgoing traffic to the subscriber. cache productivity The total cached out traffic divided by the total cached in traffic. cache quality of experience (QoE) The average delivery speed of traffic that is served from VDS TC per active subscriber. QoE is analyzed by comparing cache QoE with clear QoE. CDR Cache/Content Data Record clear The status of a subscriber request when the requested file segment does not exist in the cache. Subsequently, this object is either cached in or forwarded. It is considered as traffic that is delivered directly from the Internet. clear QoE The average delivery speed of traffic served directly from the Internet (VDS TC clear) per active subscriber. QoE is analyzed by comparing clear QoE with cache QoE. CLI command-line interface CMDB miss The status of a subscriber request when the requested file segment does not exist in the cache due to an unexpected deletion or corruption. data A connection where P2P or HTTP file segments are transferred. data non-data ratio The ratio of data to non-data. The average data non-data ratio is between 1% and 10%. downstream Objects transmitted from the world to the subscriber. Also called W2I. EMS Electronic Management System forward The process of forwarding an object directly to its requesting subscriber without caching it. This is applied to an object that does not yet exist in the cache. At this stage, it is only listed in the cache, according to the predefined license rules of the platform (see verify), and will only be cached upon future request. hit The status of an ISP subscriber request when the requested file segment exists in cache. Subsequently, this object is cached out. hit miss ratio The number of hits divided by the number of misses. Cisco Videoscape Distribution Suite Transparent Caching Analytics Software Release 2.5.0 Installation Guide viii Preface Terminology Table 1 VDS TC Analytics Terminology (continued) Term Description I2W Upstream data flowing from the ISP to the world. incoming Traffic served only from the Internet. Downstream and upstream objects transmitted from the redirector into the cache server. Each incoming object is either cached in, cached out, forwarded, or blocked. Also referred to as in traffic. in traffic See incoming. IPMI Intelligent Platform Management Interface KPI Key Performance Indicator miss A subscriber request that does not exist in the VDS TC cache. NAS Network Array Storage non-data A connection through which P2P clients communicate with each other but do not transfer P2P file segments. For example, P2P clients may communicate the details of the file segments and the uploader queue number, but do not transfer the file segments. outgoing Downstream and upstream objects transmitted out from the redirector. Each outgoing object was either cached in, cached out, or forwarded. Also referred to as out traffic. out traffic See Outgoing. P2PP Peer-to-Peer Protocol P2P Peer to Peer PBR Policy Based Routing POP point of presence QoE Quality of Experience. Measured by comparing the speed of traffic served from VDS TC (cache QoE) and the speed of traffic served from the Internet (clear QoE). request hit ratio The first time a new session arrives in the cache, it is labeled as cache out, cache in, or forward. The request hit ratio represents the number of cache out sessions divided by the number non-cache out sessions. That is, the request hit ratio measures the percentage of requests delivered from cache versus the world. SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol TIC Transparent Internet Caching total traffic All of the traffic served from both the Internet (incoming traffic) and from VDS TC (cache out traffic), i.e. incoming traffic + cache out traffic. upstream Objects transmitted from the subscriber to the world. Also called I2W. verify A predefined set of license dependent rules that determine the caching parameters of an object. world The World Wide Web (WWW), also referred to as Internet or network. W2I Downstream data flowing from the world to the subscriber.
