INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCEL
43000A SERIES MAGNETIC IMPULSE DISTRIBUTOR
As delivered, the mechanical advance in your new distributor is set at 12° distributor (24° engine} and totals at 2800 engine
RPM. If an advance change is desired, refer to “Instructions for Mechanical Advance Curve Changes” on opposite page before
installing distributor.
The magnetic pickup used in this distributor is not adjustable and never requires maintenance. It must be used with an
electronic ignition module. [t is compatible with the ACCEL 49002 Laser I and other ignition systems utilizing magnetic type
triggers. When connecting distributor to control box, follow ignition manufacturer's instructions.
For mechanical tach applications, the connection is made with a .104" square drive on the tach cable.
1.
2.
3.
Remove the existing distributor cap. Da not remove the spark plug wires at this time.
Crank the engine slowly until the rotor blade is aimed at a fixed reference point on the engine or firewall.
Disconnect wiring from the ignition coil or ignition module to remove the present distributor. With the rotor installed, place
the new distributor in the engine with the rotor pointed towards the same fixed reference point as the removed distributor.
Distributor advance mechanism is designed so the rotor can be relocated in 45° intervals. See Figure 4.
If the distributor does not drop all the way down into the engine, the oil pump drive may not be aligned with the distributor
shaft. Make sure that the distributor gear is meshed with the camshaft gear and crank the engine (with the starter if
necessary), maintaining light downward pressure on the distributor housing. The distributor should now drop into its
proper position. Install distributor hold-down, but be sure the distributor can be rotated sufficiently to set the timing
Install the new cap furnished. Install the spark plug wires into the new cap, one at a time, being sure they are in the same
order as they were on the original distributor cap. Insert high tension coil wire.
Follow ignition module manufacturer's wiring instructions for proper connection. Far Laser I! wiring diagram, see Fig. 2. If
the distributor leads are reversed, the timing will be significantly advanced (approximately 20°), causing hard starting
and poor engine operation. Reverse the pickup leads ta correct.

Start the engine and set timing. Remember, total advance does not came in until the engine is over 2800 RPM with the
factory-instalied curve. |
NOTE: !f you are not sure of the proper timing setting for your engine, we suggest a procedure called “power timing”.
Simply advance the timing on a road test until a slight ping is observed under a heavy load, and then back the timing up

TECH TIPS
Misfire after instaifation of a high energy coil or ignition system - Check the following: leaking plug wires, faulty coil wire, plug flashover,
dirty plug wires (do not use solvent for cleaning), faulty distributor cap or rotor, plug wire routing (if side-by-side cylinders fire in sequence
cross the plug wires once), Example: Firing order: 18436572 - cross #5 and #7. IMPORTANT — A lean fuel mixture can cause misfire and
severe engine damage, НЕ o | |
Charging System Voltage - Should ba adjusted to driving habits. Mostly highway driving - set low side of specs. Around-town driving - high
side of specs. Racing - high side of specs. See service manual for specifications. |
Ignition Cails - Mount ACCEL coils wherever convenient, but in coolest location, never more than 18” from distributor. Se sure polarity is
correct. If coil is wired backwards, a 40% loss af energy occurs. В .
140001 Super Coil - A high output cai] designed for universal 12 volt applications. Resistor supplied to be used for street applications with
— standard ignition (points) and electronic ignition. Do not use resistor for any Laser II or BEI applications.
Points Sets - Crowned and burnished at factory. Should only be filed in an emergency situation. Replace when pitting occurs.
Rotors - ACCEL rotors are precision cut to obtain the proper air gap between rotor blade and distributor cap insert. This blade should not
be filed, as the air gap will be changed. The black carbon buildup is a good conductor, so leave it there. Breakage usually occurs from
improper installation. Be sure rotor is straight when installing, |
Condensers - ACCEL condensers are very reliable, made with a heat resistant insulation material. Replace when replacing points. When using
Laser 11 the condenser may be left disconnected from points. :
Distributor Caps - ACCEL caps are designed far. maximym performance and durability, and cannot carbon track Brass inserts are used to
prevent oxidation. The black buildup you notice is carbon, As carbon is a good conductor, it should he left alone. If the cap cracks, no
misfire will occur, as the alkyd material will not absorb moisture. Corraded inserts are usually caused from poor plug wire connections.
Corona - The blue haze you have noticed around your plug wires at night. This is more noticeable with solid core plug wires. It is the ionization
of the air molecules around the wire caused by high voltage. This is a perfectly normal condition. Leaking insulation, however, is exhibited
by arcing to engine surfaces (ground) and results in loss of energy at spark plugs. Replace any arcing wire sets.

With the ignition switch on, touch a jumper wire between terminals #7 & 48. The coil should arc each time you make the connection.
If it does, but wil not fire normally, the problem is in the distributor. If no arc occurs, check ail wiring. If wiring is okay, the problem

Frequently asked questions
A .045" plug gap is recommended.
For optimum output under 8500 RPM, use ACCEL #140108 coil or #140001 Super Coil. For operation above 8500 RPM, use ACCEL #140002 coil.
Yes, the #140002 coil should be used on all alcohol burning engines.
Connect shielded cable to distributor. Prepare opposite end of cable so black wire can be connected to Laser II terminal #11, white to terminal #12, and shield to terminal #8. If these two wires are crossed, the timing will be extremely advanced.
