The tong utilizes a motor to drive a ring gear and cam surfaces which close the jaws around the pipe. To open the jaws, the motor is reversed until a reversing pin contacts the ring gear shoulder, and springs return the jaws to their fully opened position.

The system accepts Dovetail Inserts (pencil dies), Wrap-Around Fine Tooth Steel Dies, GRIT FACE™ Dies, and Aluminum Dies. The appropriate jaws, die adapters, and dies for a specific tubular OD are described in the manual.

Before changing dies, ensure the power unit is off, all trapped pressure is bled off, and the supply and return hoses are disconnected. Slowly close the backup until the jaws are fully latched, but do not allow the rear clamping cylinder to extend more than necessary. Then, remove the upper clip bolts, upper clip, and die from the rear clamping jaw. Install the appropriate wrap around die or dovetail die adapter, ensuring it is centered in the jaw. Reinstall the upper clip and clip bolts and tighten them to approximately 38 ft lbs. Repeat this process for the front compensating jaws.
