The HTE-360 Hedge Trimmer has been designed for trimming light foliage and is intended for DIY use only.

When using mains-powered equipment, basic safety precautions, including the following, should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury and material damage.

Read and understand the manual prior to operating this tool.

Save these instructions and other documents supplied with this tool for future reference.

The electric motor has been designed for 230V and 240V only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.

Note: The supply of 230V and 240V on Ozito tools are interchangeable for

Australia and New Zealand.

This tool is double insulated in accordance with AS/NZS 60745-2-15; therefore no earth wire is required.

If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified electrician or a power tool repairer in order to avoid a hazard.

If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Note: Double insulation does not take the place of normal safety precautions when operating this tool. The insulation system is for added protection against injury resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure within the tool.

Using an extension lead

Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool.

Before use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing.

Replace the extension lead if damaged or defective. When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. Use of an extension lead not suitable for the power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective may result in a risk of fire and electric shock.

GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS

WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions.

Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term “power tool" in all of the warnings refers to your mains-operated

(corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1) Work area safety a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2) Electrical safety a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way.

Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools.

Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.

Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.

e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.

b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.

d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

4) Power tool use and care a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.

b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use.

Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.

f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5) Service a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

b) If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.

• Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the switch is off when clearing jammed material. A moment of inattention while operating the hedge trimmer may result in serious personal injury.

• Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter blade stopped. When transporting or storing the hedge trimmer always fit the cutting device cover.

Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce possible personal injury from the cutter blades.

• Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the cutter blade may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.

Cutter blades contacting a

"live" wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.

• Keep cable away from cutting area. During operation the cable may be hidden in shrubs and can be accidentally cut by the blade.

• Perform visual inspection on the hedge being trimmed. To ensure no wire fences or foreign objects that the hedge trimmer may contact during operation.

This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

Recommendations for the use of a residual current device with a rated residual current of 30mA or less.

Using an Extension Lead

Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool.

Before use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing. Replace the extension lead if damaged or defective.

When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. Use of an extension lead not suitable for the power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective may result in a risk of fire and electric shock.

It is recommended that the extension lead is a maximum of 25m in length. Do not use multiple extension leads.

• Before use check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or aging. If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE

SUPPLY. Do not use the Hedge Trimmer if the cord is damaged or worn.

• Keep extension cord away from cutting blades.

• Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the Hedge Trimmer.

• Avoid using the Hedge Trimmer, while people, especially children or pets, are nearby.

• Use the Hedge Trimmer only in daylight or good artificial light.

• Never operate the Hedge Trimmer with damaged guards or without guards in place.

• Switch on the Hedge Trimmer only when the hands and feet are away from the cutting blades.

• Use only the manufacturer's recommended replacement parts and accessories.

• Always disconnect the Hedge Trimmer from the mains when leaving the Hedge

Trimmer unattended.

• Disconnect the Hedge Trimmer from the mains before carrying out maintenance or cleaning work.

• Inspect and maintain the Hedge Trimmer regularly. Have the Hedge Trimmer repaired only by an authorized repairer.

• When not in use, store the Hedge Trimmer out of the reach of children.

• Face the cutting blades away from yourself, other people and animals while the power is connected to the Hedge Trimmer (especially during operation).

• Disconnect the power from the Hedge Trimmer before making any adjustments.

• Use both handles.

• Keep ventilation openings clear of debris. Keep handles dry, clean and free of oil and grease.

• Never reach underneath the Hedge Trimmer (the cutting blade area) until it has completely stopped and the power has been disconnected.

ASSEMBLY

WARNING!

Before assembly, make sure that the hedge trimmer is switched off and unplugged from the mains power.

Fitting the safety guard (Fig. 1)

1. Align both sides of the supplied safety guard (4) over the blade support rail (5) and holes in the base of the motor housing.

2. Push the safety guard (4) down and fix securely on both sides of the motor housing using the screws provided.

Never use the hedge trimmer unless the safety guard is properly fitted.

OPERATION

Cord retainer

When attaching an extension cord to the Hedge Trimmer, hook the end of the extension cord into the cord retainer

(8) built into the rear of the Hedge Trimmer's housing

(Fig. 2). Using the retainer prevents accidental disconnection of the trimmer and extension cords plug and socket.

Always be sure to route the cord away from the work area to prevent it from coming near the blade.

Decide how you want to route the cord before starting work. Start trimming at the point nearest the electrical outlet, then move away while working.

The cable will then be pulled through the area which has already been cut and thus reduce the danger of itself being cut.

WARNING!

If cordset is cut or damaged remove it immediately from the power point. This product requires the use of two hands to ensure safe operation. Inspect the area to be cut before starting. Remove any objects or debris that could be thrown, jammed or become entangled in the blades.

Switching on

For your safety the Hedge Trimmer is designed with a two handed safety switch. If only one switch is squeezed, the tool will not operate.

This ensures both hands are on the tool body during use. It prevents accidental start up and also keeps both hands away from the blades during operation.

To turn the Hedge Trimmer ON, squeeze the safety switch (7) and then the On/Off switch (2) (Fig. 3).

Switching off

To turn the Hedge Trimmer OFF, simply release either switch.

Blade brake

The Hedge Trimmer is fitted with a motor brake which will stop the cutting blade within 1 second as soon as either switch is released.

Note: When the unit is switched off and the motor brake operates there may be some sparking (or flashing) occurring in the area of the upper motor ventilation slots. This is normal and will not damage the machine.

Trimming Instructions

1. Extension cord. Always keep the extension cord behind the Trimmer and away from the trimming operation. Never drape it over a hedge being trimmed. If you cut or damage the cord, unplug it at the electrical outlet immediately. It must be repaired by an electrician or a power tool repairer before being used again.

2. Working position. Maintain proper footing and balance and do not overreach. Wear safety goggles, non-slip footwear and rubber gloves when trimming. Hold the tool firmly in both hands and turn the tool ON. Always hold the trimmer with one hand on the body handle and one hand on the front handle. Never hold the tool by the blade guard.

3. Trimming new growth. Use wide sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through the twigs is most effective. A slight downward tilt of the blade, in the direction of motion gives the best cut.

Note: Do not use the Trimmer for cutting stems greater than 14mm. Use the

Trimmer only for cutting normal shrubbery found around houses and buildings.

4. Level hedges. To obtain exceptionally level hedges a piece of string can be stretched along the length of the hedge as a guide.

5. Side-trimming hedges. Hold the Hedge Trimmer and begin at the bottom and sweep up.

6. Shaping. The hedge should be trimmed to achieve a trapezoidal form, that is, it should widen toward the bottom at both sides. This improves the penetration of light to the lower extremities. A general guideline is approximately 10cm slant for each 1 metre of hedge height.

7. Cutting sequence.

First cut both sides, starting at the bottom and work to the top: this prevents cuttings from falling into the area where you are still working.

8. Trimming the top. Where the branches have grown extremely long, cut back the hedge in several stages. The shorter the cuttings the better suited for composting.

9. General information. When older hedges are to be cut back a substantial amount, use pruning shears or some other device to trim thicker branches

(greater than 14mm diameter) to the desired length before starting work with the Hedge Trimmer.

To shape precisely, run a taught line between the extreme edges of the hedge and then trim along the length of the line.

Ensure the blades do not come into contact with any object made of hard material that could damage the blades, such as fencing wire or metallic plant supports.

Always ensure that the trimmer is switched off and the plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustments

• When not in use, the Hedge Trimmer should be stored in a dry, frost free location not within the reach of children.

• Keep ventilation slots of the Hedge Trimmer clean at all times and prevent any foreign matter from entering.

• If the enclosure of the Hedge Trimmer requires cleaning do not use solvents but a moist cloth only.

• There are no user serviceable parts in the Hedge Trimmer; if a fault is suspected or the supply cord requires replacement, return the Trimmer to a power tool repairer.

• The blade rail should be cleaned and treated with light machine oil or spray lubricant (such as WD40, CRC 5.56 or RP7) after each use. When a job lasts for a longer period of time it is recommended that the blade rail also be treated with spray lubricant at regular intervals during operation.

Carbon brushes

When the carbon brushes wear out the tool will spark and/or stop. Discontinue use as soon as this happens. They should be replaced prior to recommencing use of the tool.

Carbon brushes are a wearing component of the tool and therefore not covered under warranty. Continuing to use the tool when carbon brushes need to be replaced may cause permanent damage to the tool. Carbon brushes will wear out after many uses but when the carbon brushes need to be carbon brushes replaced take the tool to an electrician or a power tool repairer for a quick and low cost replacement. Always replace both carbon brushes at the same time.

Note: Ozito Industries will not be responsible for any damage or injuries caused by the repair of the tool by an unauthorised person or by mishandling of the tool.
