Torque Analyzer
Operating and Service Instructions:
Operation:
These Torque Analyzers consist of a heavy metal housing enclosing a torsion absorbing and dial indicating mechanism. A means is provided to drive into the analyzer with power screwdrivers and to hold and observe the torque obtained until manually released by the operator. The tool should be removed from the drive post before the brake is released.
Attach a 5/16” six point power socket to the drive shaft of the screwdriver. Engage the socket with the drive post of the analyzer and power drive to torque release. The P-15 pointer will read in inch-pounds and the MP-15 pointer will read in centimeter-kilograms.
During operation, the power screwdriver winds the torsion spring which absorbs the revolutions of the screwdriver and transmits the applied torque to the torsion bar. This in turn is registered by the pointer on the dial face. When terminal torque is reached, the pointer is held by an overrunning clutch. The brake on this clutch is manually released by the hand lever.
The tool should be removed from the drive post before the brake is released. When released, the pointer will return to its start position.
The brake is automatically tightened when not manually held open. The torque output of clutch type screwdrivers up to 2,000 RPM can be accurately checked with the P-15 and MP-
15 analyzers. Higher RPM tools of this type will tend to cause the analyzer to be erratic. The stall torque of direct drive tools considerably higher than 2,000 RPM can also be checked.
Dead Weight Testing:
The only reliable method for checking the accuracy of the P-15 or MP-15 analyzers is by dead weight testing.
Perform dead weight testing as follows:
Remove the two cap screws (Ref. 5, Illustration
B) from the flywheel housing. Depress the release handle (Ref. 8, Illustration B) and lift the flywheel housing assembly off the analyzer.
CAUTION: With the flywheel housing assembly removed, it is extremely important that the flywheel be held by hand if any load, either by wrench or test wheel, is applied to the analyzer drive post.
If the flywheel is not held, the wrench or test wheel will rotate in the reverse direction of loading when the load is released.
Holding the flywheel firmly, install a 4” diameter test wheel with a cable hanging from the right side. Turn clockwise until the pointer indicates
10 in.lbs. (11.5 cm.kg.). Hang a 2-1/2 pound counterbalance on the cable. Remove the flywheel assembly from the analyzer by pulling up and rotating slightly to disengage the worm gear. The pointer should now indicate 10 in.lbs.
(11.5 cm.kg.)
Reinstall the flywheel assembly, rotating slowly to engage the worm gear. Grasp the flywheel firmly and turn the analyzer drive post clockwise until the pointer indicates 30 in.lbs. (34.5 cm.kg.). In the higher range of the analyzer, it is recommended that a wrench and
5/16” socket be used to wind up the analyzer.
Install the test wheel, counterbalance and 5 pound weight. Remove the flywheel assembly and observe the reading. The pointer should indicate 30 in.lbs. (34.5 cm.kg.).
Repeat the above procedure and using 70 in.lbs. (80.6 cm.kg.), 110 in.lbs. (127 cm.kg.) and 150 in.lbs. (173 cm.kg.) as check points and by adding a 10 pound weight each time. To return the analyzer to the start point, permit the flywheel to slowly unwind in hand. All readings should be within ± 2 in.lbs. for the P-15 and ± 5 cm.kg. for the MP-15.

CAUTION: The test wheel and weights should be removed from the drive post before permitting the flywheel to unwind.
Calibration:
With no load on the analyzer, remove the torsion bar retainer (Ref. 28, Illustration A) and loosen the cap screw (Ref. 35, Illustration A) approximately 3 turns.
Pull the torsion bar (Ref. 16, Illustration A) out approximately 2 inches.
If the pointer reads high, rotate the torsion bar clockwise, facing rear of analyzer. Turn one revolution for each 1 in.lb. error at the 150 in.lbs. reading.
If the pointer reads low, turn the torsion bar counterclockwise.
Push the torsion rod back into position, rotating slightly to locate the socket at the far end.
Install the test wheel and a 2-1/2 pound counterbalance on the analyzer and remove the flywheel assembly. Rotate the torsion bar until the pointer reads exactly 10 in.lbs. and tighten the cap screw to 215 in.lbs. (24.3 Nm) of torque.
Replace the torsion bar retainer and repeat the dead weight test as previously described.
