TEWARDSHIP
Flory Industries, Inc. encourages the owners and operators of all equipment to be safe and courteous. Some equipment will generate dust and /or flying debris. Please be aware of near by traffic and road conditions. Be especially careful when maneuvering at row ends and turning onto public roads.
Operators should always take great care so as not to obscure drivers’ vision on public roads with dust discharge. All operators should be informed about safe and courteous operation, especially in highly populated and urban areas. Operators should also consider such things as wind speed, wind direction, etc.
Here are some suggestions that will help to reduce risk and allow you to have a safe and friendly harvest:
When sweeping, try to keep from blowing dust onto the roadway whenever possible.
When harvesting or conditioning parallel to a road, keep fan discharge pointed toward orchard. This might mean making several deadhead passes. Do the first three rows this way if possible.
When harvesting or conditioning in a traffic area, slow down forward speed and the engine RPM. These two items will greatly reduce the dust generated. The product will have a little more trash but it will be hardly noticeable.
When working along a roadway put up CAUTION signs warning drivers of dust in the area.
When moving equipment on the road, install yellow flashing lights that warn other drivers of a slow moving vehicle.
Always display the SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) sign when traveling on public roads. The law requires this to be displayed when moving as speeds below 25 MPH. This sign is to be removed when the machine is being transported on a trailer, if the sign is visible from behind.

S
TEWARDSHIP
Flory Industries, Inc. is aware that harvesting of tree nuts can be a very dusty operation. In an effort to be as friendly as possible to our neighbors and environment, we recommend a few dust control measures:
SWEEPER: Always make sure that the sweeping head is adjusted properly so as to sweep the nuts, but not put excessive dirt in the windrow that must be picked up later by the harvester.
It is not necessary to run the sweeper engine at full throttle if satisfactory blowing results can be obtained at reduced engine speed. Lower engine RPM means less dust being generated.
Use a minimum number of sweeping and blowing passes. Sometimes an extra pass for a few nuts costs more in labor and fuel than the value of the nuts, plus the additional dust that was made.
HARVESTER: While the harvester will pick up nuts at a very fast ground speed, it has been demonstrated that a reduced ground speed will produce less dust and deposit a cleaner product in the cart, with only a small overall increase in elapsed time, mainly because the harvester does not have to wait on an empty cart or Shuttle.
CARTS: It is always advisable to keep the frequently traveled roadways sprinkled by a water truck to minimize the dust when transporting nuts out of the field to the road side elevator.

PERATION
Tractor Selection
—————
A tractor with a minimum of 85 horsepower and a 540 RPM power take-off is required to operate the 860
Harvester . A hydrostatic drive tractor or a tractor with a close ratio gear selection is most successful for operating
PTO driven equipment, as the ground speeds will vary according to crop conditions.
This harvester is capable of harvesting faster than ground or tree conditions may safely allow. Use good judgment, always start slowly and be aware of unforeseen hazards (i.e. low tree limbs)
Connecting To Tractor
—————
1.
Never leave tractor engine running while connecting or disconnecting the 3-point adapter or driveshaft.
2.
Always keep driveshaft shields in place.
3.
Always use stabilizer bars on 3 point lift arms to prevent swaying.
4.
Check for proper driveshaft length (engagement) in all positions and turning conditions
5.
Never stand between tractor and harvester until tractor engine has been stopped.
6.
Engage PTO slowly with tractor engine slightly above idle. Never engage the PTO with tractor running at high RPM.
7.
When making turns or transporting the harvester, disengage the PTO to avoid excessive wear of the driveshaft
U-joints. Raise the tractor 3-point until the front tires of the harvester clear the ground during turns and transport.
Pre-Start Inspection
—————
Although adjustments are not necessary daily, the operator should inspect and clean foreign material from the machine. Open the safety shields and inspection covers to check chain idlers and adjustments before operating the harvester.
Telescoping Rear Hitch
—————
The 860 Harvester is equipped with a telescoping rear hitch to assist with loading carts and turning the harvester on row ends. It may become necessary to extend the hitch at row ends to prevent the harvester elevator assembly from contacting the cart.

DJUSTMENTS
Suction Fan Speed / Air Control
—————
Fan suction, is controlled primarily by changing the RPM of the fan wheel. This is achieved by changing the driven sheave on the fan shaft, (See chart below). Raising or lowering the adjustable flap behind the suction fan inlet tube will also vary the amount of suction. To increase suction, unhook the chain and lower the flap. To decrease suction, raise the flap. The sliding, adjustable wind board under the plenum should be in the front holes for walnuts and pecans, and in the back holes for almonds.

Primary Chain Bounce Shafts
—————
The bounce shafts control primary chain vibration. The bounce shafts are set at the factory in the middle position. To increase vibration raise shafts to top of slots. To decrease vibration, lower shaft to bottom of slots.
Note: If the primary bounce shafts are relocated to the top position, this will result in reduced chain life.

A
DJUSTMENTS
Pick-Up Belt
—————
The pick-up belt is available in two different configurations: Steel teeth with rubber backup flaps,
(standard) or one row of steel teeth only, (for sandy conditions).
1.
Adjusting pick-up head depth: Evenly adjust the depth control threaded rods on each side of the front axle until the lower edge of the wear strip just contacts the ground. It may be necessary to set deeper for uneven or sandy ground conditions.
2.
Adjusting pick-up teeth depth: Loosen pick-up-belt tension by means of the draw bolt at the top shaft on each side of the machine. Adjust push bolt on lower shaft equally on both sides of the machine. Check teeth depth with a straight edge across the bottom of both wears strips.
Steel teeth with rubber back up flaps: For average conditions, the steel teeth should be set 1/8” to 1/4” above the lower edge of the wear strips.
Steel teeth only: For most conditions where steel teeth are used alone, the teeth should be set flush with the lower edge of the wear strips.
Note: This adjustment is set at the factory and should not be necessary on a new machine. As the teeth eventually wear, it will be necessary to replace them. (See diagram for proper replacement length) Always check teeth depth after installing new pick-up teeth or wear strips.
3.
Tension pick-up belt with draw bolts on both sides of machine evenly. Tension may be checked by first removing one of the pick-up belt covers, then pull up on one set of teeth near the center of the belt, between top and bottom rollers. The belt is properly tensioned when there is approximately 1-1/4” of deflection. Always replace covers before resuming operation!
CAUTION: DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE PICK-UP BELT! It is very important to re-check pickup belt tension frequently, especially on new machines or new belts. Pickup belts have been known to become tighter with use which will cause the belt to tear and fail pre-maturely! The rubber covered drive roller does not require as much tension as earlier machines that had bare steel rollers.
4.
Always test run machine after making adjustments to insure proper belt alignment.
5.
The illustration below shows the length of wire pick-up teeth and rubber back up flaps when new. It is recommended to replace wire pick-up teeth when worn to a length of 1-1/4”. Rubber flaps should be replaced at the same time as wire teeth.

Pick-Up Teeth (Part No. F3024)

Primary Dirt Chain
—————
1.
As the primary chain wears it will become necessary to tighten it, to prevent it from running too close to the ground.
Tighten the chain by adjusting the push bolts on the upper primary chain shaft.
2.
After additional wear, it may become necessary to remove several links from the chain and re-adjust. (See below for procedure, which is the same as for elevator chain)
3.
If your machine is equipped with one of the optional bar chains, it does not need to be adjusted as frequently as the roller chain style. Do not over tighten the bar chain.
Be sure machine is stable and blocked up securely before working underneath. Failure to heed these warnings may result in severe personal injury or death
Installing Optional Dirt Chains
—————
Primary & elevator dirt chains are available in (4) different configurations. These are: 1] Roller chain, sprocket driven flat wire for almonds, 2] Sprocket driven 32 mm pitch bar chains for walnuts, 3] Sprocket driven
28mm pitch bar chains for pecans & hazelnuts. In addition, friction driven Twin Rod bar chains are also available for almonds. Should you need to convert your harvester from flatwire to bar chain or Twin Rod, follow the procedure listed below. NOTE: It is important to consult the parts and / or service department at Flory, since some of these conversions require different seals, seal holders, sprockets, etc.
Primary dirt chains are heavy and very flexible. Wear gloves and be aware of pinch points when handling or adjusting.
1.
Park the harvester on a hard level surface. Raise the front of the harvester and block securely! Engage the parking brake and block rear wheels to prevent it from moving. Engine must be off.
2.
Loosen the take up bolts on upper dirt chain shaft.
3.
Locate the chain connector links and threaded lacing wire in the dirt chain, then manually advance the chain so the connector links and lacing wire is on the underneath side, near the front of the machine.
4.
Remove the connector links, lacing wire and dirt chain from harvester.
5.
Remove the lower dirt chain shaft assembly with bearings and straps, and also the sprockets from upper shaft.
6.
Install drive sprockets on upper shaft, part number 12T32MM for 32mm pitch (walnuts), or part number 14T28MM for 28mm pitch (pecans and hazelnuts).
7.
Install support roller, part no. F32928R centered between drive sprockets.
8.
Install plates and rollers at lower shaft location (part no. L20015 plate) and (part no. RL1080) 2 each.
9.
Install belt chain; adjust to proper tension, and test run.
Conversion to a Twin Rod bar chain is a bit more complex, therefore it is recommended that you contact the Flory service department for further information.
WHEN TWIN ROD CHAINS ARE BEING USED: It is recommended to replace the connector rod every 200 hours of operation. If the connecting rod is allowed to go too long, it will accelerate wear on the connecting clips, and replacing the clips is a much more costly and time consuming repair.
When it is determined time to replace the connecting rod, inspect the clips also. If the clips need replacing, that can be done without replacing the entire chain.

Elevator Dirt Chain
—————
Be sure machine is stable and blocked up securely before working underneath. Failure to heed these warnings may result in severe personal injury or death
1.
To adjust the elevator chain: Loosen the idler on the drive chain and tighten take-up bolts equally on both sides of conveyor. When desired tension is achieved, lock the jam nuts on the take-up bolts and re-adjust the idler on drive chain as needed. It may become necessary to add links to the drive chain, as the elevator chain reaches its maximum amount of take-up.
2.
As the elevator chain wears it may become necessary to remove links from the chain to maintain proper tension.
Proper tension is important in order to maintain good chain and sprocket life. Do not over tighten! Shorten the chain using the following procedure:
A.
B.
C.
Loosen take-up bolts to minimum position on each side of conveyor and remove drive chain.
Remove the cover plates on inspection holes on elevator sides. Locate the connector links on the roller chain and manually turn it so the connector links appear in the holes. Remove cotter pins from the connector links and disconnect before cutting the lacing wire in the woven wire chain.
“Tie off” the bottom of elevator chain to prevent it from sliding down the elevator. Now, cut the lacing wire and separate the ends.
In order to maintain the proper sequence of links on the roller chain, it is necessary to remove two links from it. One of the two must have a “slat” (cross bar) welded to it. Remove elevator cleat from the “slat.” Grind off the heads of the roller chain pins and use a punch to remove. (See illustration below)

D.
After removing the links described in step 2C, connect the roller chains and determine the number of pickets to remove. Cut the lacing wire(s) and remove pickets. Re-assemble the woven wire chain, using Replacement pickets and lacing wires. Note the right and left hand weave of the woven wire, and try to match the original patterns as close as possible. After the chain is re-assembled, tack weld ends of lacing wires to pickets.
E.
Tighten chain to correct tension, install drive chain and tension, and close all the shields and covers.
F.
Test run machine.
Elevator Flow Control
—————
The elevator chain speed is controlled by a hydraulic flow control. This may be adjusted to suit specific crop or field conditions. It is recommended to start with the flow-control in a full open position (#10) and then adjust downward until desired speed is reached.
Suction Fan Belt Adjustment
—————
The suction fan drive belt is tensioned by a spring-loaded idler. Stop the tractor engine and open the safety shield. Turn hex nuts on the threaded adjusting rod until desired tension is achieved. Tighten the jam nut on the rod

Gearbox
—————
Maintain the oil level with 80w–90 gear lube up to the oil level plug on the side of the gearbox. See
Specifications and Fluids page at the back of this manual for recommended gearlube.
Hydraulic System
—————
Escaping hydraulic oil under pressure may penetrate the skin, causing personal injury.
Before disconnecting lines, relieve all pressure. Be sure all connections are tight and hoses are not damaged.
It is recommended to change hydraulic oil every 500 hours or once per season. See Specifications and
Fluids page at the back of this manual for hydraulic oil recommendation to provide the best performance and life. Change the return filter element every 500 hours. This element may be removed from the filter body without removing the top cover of the tank. There is a suction strainer located inside the oil tank. Should it become necessary to service this strainer, you must first remove the top cover from the tank. Maintain oil level within sight gauge at all times. The hydraulic pump coupled to the gearbox at the front of the harvester is protected by a relief valve. This relief valve is set at 2500 P.S.I. and must be maintained to insure proper operation of the harvester.
Bearing and Universal Joint Lubrication
—————
Note!
Do not over grease bearings or PTO shafts.
1.
Lube driveshaft U-joints twice daily.
2.
Lube suction fan outer bearing every 15-20 hours.
3.
Lube suction fan inner bearing every 150-200 hours.
4.
Lube all other bearings every 50 hours.
5.
Lube telescoping section of PTO shaft (between tractor and harvester) every 15-20 hours of operation.

Suction Fan
—————
Replace fan blades when worn, sharp, or thin. Always follow the instructions provided with each set of blades.
1.
Remove old blades and clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
2.
Use only the new hardware provided with the replacement blades.
3.
Torque the nuts to 40-ft. Lbs.
4.
Use only Flory manufactured replacement blades.
Note: In order to achieve maximum fan housing life, inspect the liners periodically. If replacement is needed, a good time to replace the liners is after removing the worn blades, but prior to installing new blades.
Do not use a cutting torch to remove old blades. Improper use of torch may cause the hub assembly to become out of balance.
ATTENTION: It is very important to install the same type of blades on the fan that were removed from the fan in order to maintain the balance of the fan assembly. If another type of blade is used, (either lighter or heavier) the fan assembly may need to be re-balanced to avoid vibration.
Drive Chains
—————
All drive chains are adjusted by means of a moveable idler. Lubricate roller chains daily with a good quality chain lube such as that available from Flory Industries, part number 227 in an aerosol can.
Wheels
—————
1.
Tighten lug nuts after 10 hours of operation. Check lug nuts every season or after 200 hours of operation.
2.
Pack wheel bearings with grease once every season.
Nut Seals
—————
Inspect all nut seals regularly and adjust or replace as needed to avoid losing nuts back onto the ground.
