Back Cover Warranty . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Back Cover The variable speed air motor of Models 218–644 and 218–649 develop 0.25 hp (186W) at 1200 rpm, using 12 cfm (0.34 m3/min); 0.5 hp (373W) maximum at 3000 rpm, using 20 cfm (0.56 m3/min). The 15:1 ratio gear reducer gives output rpm (agitator shaft speed) of 1/15 of input rpm (air motor speed). 04179 Models 218–645 and 218–648 have a 0.33 hp (248W), 230/460V, 3 phase, class 1, group D, explosion–proof electric motor, which drives a 20:1 ratio gear reducer at 1725 rpm input speed; 88 rpm output (agitator shaft speed). 04178 WARNING Hazard of Using Fluids Containing Halogenated Hydrocarbons Never use 1,1, 1–trichloroethane, methylene chloride, other halogenated hydrocarbon solvents or fluids containing such solvents in this equipment. Such use could result in a serious chemical reaction, with the possibility of explosion, which could cause death, serious injury and/or substantial property damage. Consult your fluid suppliers to ensure that the fluids being used are compatible with aluminum and zinc parts. GRACO INC. P.O. BOX 1441 MINNEAPOLIS, MN COPYRIGHT, 1984, GRACO INC. 55440–1441 Installation WARNING WARNING EQUIPMENT MISUSE HAZARD Equipment misuse can cause the equipment to rupture or malfunction and result in serious injury. INSTRUCTIONS D This equipment is for professional use only. D Read all instruction manuals, tags, and labels before operating the equipment. D Use the equipment only for its intended purpose. If you are not sure, call Graco Technical Assistance at 1–800–543–0339. D Do not alter or modify this equipment. D Check equipment daily. Repair or replace worn or damaged parts immediately. D Use fluids and solvents compatible with the equipment wetted parts. Refer to the Technical Data section of all equipment manuals. Read the fluid and solvent manufacturer’s warnings. D Comply with all applicable local, state, and national fire, electrical, and safety regulations. NOTE: Reference numbers and letters in parentheses refer to the callouts in Figures 1 and 2. Number callouts also refer to the Parts Drawing. Lower the agitator shaft (16 or 37) into the mix tank far enough to slide both blades (13 or 22) onto the shaft. Position the bottom blade so that the setscrews (3) line up with the holes in the shaft and tighten the setscrews. Lower the shaft further until the upper blade can be lined up with the holes in the shaft and tighten the setscrews. See the Parts Drawing. Remove the mounting screws (6 or 9) from the gear reducer mounting (14 or 26) and lower the agitator until it rests on the cover (A). C A Remove plug from vent. Otherwise, seal will fail and oil will leak into paint supply. With the air powered agitator, connect an air supply hose to the 1/4 npt(f) opening of the air line coupler (35). WARNING To reduce the risk of electric shock, fire or serious injury, be sure that your installation of the electric agitator complies with National, State and Local codes for the installation of electrical equipment. Have a qualified electrician make all connections. D B 14 or 26 CAUTION Air-Powered Agitator Refer to the motor nameplate for correct voltages and connection details. The agitator motor requires 230/460 VAC, 3 phase, 60 Hz electric service. It draws 1.4A at 230V and 0.7A at 460V. Be sure to connect the motor lead wires so that rotation of the output shaft is CLOCKWISE (looking down from the top). This is necessary for the creation of the “down–draft” motion of fluid. C 6 or 9 D B Fig 1 04180 Remove the oil level plug (B) and check the oil level in the reducer housing. See Fig 1. The oil should never be higher than the oil level plug. NOTE: Special high temperature silicon-free synthetic gear oil is required for the gear reducer. Use only Graco oil, part number 204–559, supplied. Electric Agitator Fig 2 04181 Operation WARNING To reduce the risk of serious injury including amputation of fingers by the agitator blades or electric shock, always shut off the agitator (disconnect the air line or unplug the power supply cord), before raising, checking or repairing the agitator. With Air Powered Agitator With Electric Agitator To start the agitator, turn on the air supply and connect the air line coupler (35). Use the needle valve (27) to adjust the agitator speed. Always use moderate agitation speeds; excessive agitator speed may cause vibration, foaming of fluid and increased wear on parts. Always agitate fluid thoroughly before supplying it to the dispensing equipment. Continue agitating fluid while dispensing equipment is being supplied. To stop the agitator, disconnect the air line coupler. To start the agitator, turn on the electric supply to the motor. Always agitate fluid thoroughly before supplying it to the dispensing equipment. Continue agitating fluid while dispensing equipment is being supplied. To stop the agitator, turn off the electrical supply to the motor. Disconnect the electrical supply before checking or servicing the agitator. Service 36 Lubrication 10 Gear Reducer: Remove drain/fill plug (D) and thoroughly flush housing with light flushing oil after the first 80 hours of operation. See Fig 1 & 2. Remove oil level plug (B) and refill with Graco high temperature synthetic gear oil. Make a second oil change after 250 hours of operation. Thereafter, under normal circumstances, oil should be changed after every 1000 hours of operation. AIR MOTOR G F Electric Motor: See the motor instruction card for manufacturer’s instructions. Air Motor Service WARNING Fig 3 04182 Keep your face clear of exhaust while flushing to reduce the risk of blowing kerosene in your face. If the air motor operation is erratic or sluggish, flush the motor as follows: Remove the muffler (16), fill the cavity with kerosene, wait 10 minutes, then operate the agitator slowly until all kerosene is blown out. If operation is still sluggish, repeat the flushing procedure. Do not attempt to repair the air motor yourself; contact your Graco distributor. When replacing the air motor, be sure that half (F) of the flexible coupling (7) is assembled on the air motor shaft, and the coupling cutouts are level. See Fig 3. With the coupling load cushion (G) in place, push the air motor hub into the mounting collar (36) until the edge of the collar contacts the bottom side of the air motor. Tighten the clamp (10). Gear Reducer Make no attempt to repair the gear reducer yourself. Contact an authorized Graco Service Center. Agitator Shaft Seal If the lower seal (7 or 11), which is press fit into bottom of gear reducer mounting (14 or 26), needs to be replaced, be sure to seal its outside diameter with gasket sealer. Take care to avoid getting sealer compound on the sealing surfaces of the seal and shaft. When replacing the flexible coupling half on the reducer worm shaft, be sure that the end of the shaft is level with the coupling cutouts. See Fig 3. NOTE: When replacing the reducer (24 or 25), align universal joint (39 or 17) with the output shaft of the reducer by turning the input shaft of the reducer. Install the screws (4) and lockwashers (2) into the reducer loosely. See Parts Drawing. With the agitator motor running, tighten the screws.
