This model is expandable to a five or six bay charger by ordering extender(s), part no. 117435, below. • Part No.117435 - is an extender for four bay Battery Charger 117429 ONLY. Adding one or a maximum of two extenders can expand Part No. 117429 from a four bay charger into a five or six bay unit. See Battery Charger Extender Instruction Manual (309499). Wall Mounting The chargers can be wall mounted using wall anchors (not supplied). See Dimensions, page 11. Charging Batteries WARNING Initial Battery Charging CAUTION All Matrix batteries receive an initial charge at the factor. Batteries ordered by Graco Matrix distributors should be used with six months from receiving. If battery inventory is stored beyond the six month time frame (either in the distributor or end user’s inventory) the batteries must be re-initialized using either of two methods: • Three Day Initial Charging • Single Day Initial Charging If batteries are not fully initialized, irreparable cell damage can result. Three Day Initial Charging The three day initial charging process is done using one or more 4-bay chargers based on the number of batteries that must be re-initialized. All batteries in inventory over six months must be re-initialized. If batteries are not fully initialized, irreparable cell damage can result. Completely follow the process to assure proper battery initialization. The complete process will take approximately 3 days to accomplish. The orange “Temp” light (A) may come on during the charging process. See FIG. 2. Do not remove the batteries from the adapter cups. The Temp light indicates that power is not being supplied to the batter(s) causing the to overheat. Overheating reduces the life of the battery cells. This is a normal operating process of the charger. Battery Chargers Batteries may leak, explode, cause burns or cause an explosion if mishandled. Read BATTERY SAFETY, page 3. Single Bay Four Bay FIG. 1 4 309502C Charging Batteries 1. Plug in charger(s). Single Day Initial Charging 2. Insert battery(s) – yellow “Charge” light (B) begins blinking. See FIG. 2. The single day initial charging process is done using one or more 4-bay chargers based on the number of batteries that must re-initialized. All batteries in inventory over six months must be re-initialized. If batteries are not fully initialized, irreparable cell damage can result. 3. Charge until green “Ready” light (C) is blinking – this first charge may take up to 24 hours. 4. Remove the battery(s), then reinsert them in the charger cup(s). 5. Charge until green “Ready” light (C) is blinking – this second charge may take up to 24 hours. 6. Remove the battery(s), then reinsert them in the charger cup(s). Follow the process below to assure proper battery initialization. This process will takes about 1 day to accomplish. You will need to purchase a programmable timer for this method. Graco recommends using a Intermatic DT-17, 7 day digital time. It sells for about $20 at Home Depot. Instructions to program the timer is on the Matrix Full Line Training CD (324050). 7. Charge until green “Ready” light (C) is blinking – this third charge may take up to 2 hours. 8. Remove the battery(s), then reinsert them into charger cup(s). 9. Charge until green “Ready” light (C) is blinking again – this fourth charge may take up to 1 hour. The battery(s) are now fully charged. After the fourth charge is complete the battery(s) can be left in the charger(s) indefinitely without damage. Initial charging procedure 1. Plug in charger(s) to a common power supply strip. 2. Plug the power strip into the digital timer 3. Insert battery(s) - yellow “Charge” light will begin blinking 4. Program the digital timer using the sequence listed below: C B • • • • 12 hours “ON”, then 15 minutes “OFF” 4 hours “ON”, then 15 minutes “OFF” 4 hours “ON”, then 15 minutes “OFF” 2 hours “ON”, then off (the battery(s) are now fully initialized and can be removed from the charger for use) A FIG. 2 309502C 5 Charging Batteries Recharging “In-Use” Batteries Recharging a “Dead” Battery 1. Insert discharged batteries into the adapter cups. The charger indicator lights will signal the condition of the battery. See Diagnostics on page 7 for a description of the lights. A battery that is completely discharged has no voltage across the contacts and acts like an open circuit, preventing the charger from operating. If you insert the battery into the adapter cup and NO lights appear, the battery might be completely “dead” but still rechargeable. 2. Several seconds after the battery is inserted, the yellow “Charge” light begins blinking as the battery charges. See FIG. 3. 3. The green blinking “Ready” light comes on when charging is complete. 4. Batteries can be removed and used or left in the charger, which automatically switches to the “Maintenance Mode”. Maintenance mode is a state of periodic pulse charging to maintain the full charge without damaging the battery or charger. Batteries may be left on the charger indefinitely without damage to the battery. 1. Insert the battery into the charger. 2. Press and hold the black “Start” button for 1-2 minutes, or until the yellow “Charge” light flickers. See FIG. 3. The light indicates that charge pulses have been accepted and the charge cycle has begun. 3. Release the button and follow the progress of the charging cycle using the test lights. WARNING To reduce the risk of electric shock, only use Graco batteries with the Graco charger. Do not insert a foreign object into the adapter cup. MVC FIG. 3 6 309502C Diagnostics Diagnostics Appearance Description No lights Check the battery charger fuse. Verify that the battery and charger contacts are clean and in good shape. Attempt the Recharging a “Dead” Battery on page 6. If after 4 - 5 attempts this process does not work, the battery is spent and cannot be recharged. Remove the battery and dispose of it properly. Yellow “Charging” light flickers Normal charging process. Green “Ready” light blinks Indicates a full charge. Use the battery or leave it in the charger. The automatic “Maintenance Mode” holds the batteries at full charge. Orange “Temperature” light comes on No action required. Indicates that the charger has automatically shut down because of battery temperature. When battery cools, normal charging resumes. If light keeps coming on, a faulty battery is indicated. Remove the battery and dispose of it properly. Red “Defective Battery” light Battery is internally shorted and automatic recovery process is being attempted. stays on and yellow “Charging” Wait either for the red “Defective Battery” light to go out or the yellow “Charging” light to stop flickering. light blinks Red “Defective Battery” light stays on - no other lights on Battery has high internal impedance. Remove then reinsert the battery and restart. If light stays on after 4-5 attempts, the battery is spent and cannot be recharged. Properly dispose of faulty battery. Battery lasts only 7 days after initial charge Normal operation. Batteries typically last up to 7 days after the initial battery charge. When batteries are placed in the meter, the “sleep mode” still draws power from the batteries. If you are not planning to use or charge batteries within the 7 day period, leaving the battery in the charger is advised. Short battery life An outstanding work order in the system may be attempting to communicate with meters with inadequate battery charge, thus consuming battery power from the remaining meters in the facility. Replace dead meter batteries with completely charged batteries, and avoid allowing batteries to go dead. Keep spare batteries readily available in chargers at all times. Battery charger green “Ready” light flashes 5 times for each yellow “Charge” light flash after a completely dead battery is installed for only 20 minutes. Normal operation. Even though the green “Ready” light is flashing, the battery is not completely charged yet (see Recharging a “Dead” Battery, above). Note that the green “Ready” light must blink 20 times before the yellow “Charge” light blinks once. 309502C 7 Parts Parts Part No. 117427 Single Charger Part No. 117429 Multiple Charger Part No. 117310 Battery (sold separately) 101 Part No. 117427 Single Charger CAUTION Do not use transformer 117430 (for the single-adapter cup charger) to power transceiver.
