Room Preparation
ATTENTION
:
NewAge recommends using a professional kitchen installer to prepare and install kitchen cabinets.
NOTE
:
If you are unfamiliar or unsure of how to handle utility connections, hav e a qualified professional perform these duties.
Before you begin
• Shut off all existing water, power and utility lines.
• Remove existing appliances (stove, oven, refrigeration, sink, and dishwasher). It is best to move these out of the room for easier access to the work area while the remodeling is being done.
• Remove old cabinets and countertops.
• Remove any moldings from the walls where cabinets are to be installed.
Measuring and Marking your Space
A
B
B
B
E
B
D
C
It is very important to measure and understand your room space for planning your installation.
Use a tape measure and a pencil to measure and identify the following:
A. Height of the room from the floor to the ceiling.
B. Width of the room wall to wall / wall to door.
C. Height from the floor / Ceiling to any windows to ensure the cabinets fit.
D. Location of any service points for plumbing, electrical and any other use.
E. Any other permanent fixtures like pillars.
12
Room Preparation
Preparing your Room
• Locate the uneven areas to adjust the cabinets in order to make the installation plumb, true and square.

High points on floor.
• Using a carpenter’s level, find the high point of the floor.
• Check all around the room within 24” of the wall where base cabinets will be attached.
• From the high point, mark a level horizontal line using a straight edge, on the walls where the cabinets will be attached. This will be called the base level line.
• From the base level line, measure up 34 3/4” and mark another level horizontal line for the base cabinets.
• Add 1-1/4” for a standard NewAge countertops (if you are using a custom countertop, measure the thickness accordingly) and 18 inches for a standard backsplash. Mark the bottom line for wall cabinets at this 54-inches from the base line which will serve as a guide for hanging the cabinets.
• Mark the top line for wall cabinets at 30” or 36” (according to the height of wall cabinets selected) from the bottom line for wall cabinets.
• Mark a reference line 2 3/8” below the measured top line of the wall cabinet. This Line acts as a reference to install suspension rails on the wall.
13
Room Preparation
• Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs. The wall studs are crucial to properly support the weight of the cabinets.
Locate Wall Studs
• Using a carpenter’s level, check the walls for uneven spots. Wall unevenness can cause cabinets to be misaligned resulting in racking or misalignment of the doors and drawer fronts. At the point where these uneven spots interfere, high spots should be removed by scraping and sanding off excess plaster or sheet rock. Low spots should be shimmed with pieces of wood shims.
• Mark the outlines of all the cabinets on the wall to check actual cabinet dimensions against your layout to confirm that the room design used will work.
• Mark down all plumbing and other utilities. Check that everything fits with the measurements from your plan and your electricity, water, gas and ventilation connections are where you want them to be.
