. OPERATING 'INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOOTHROYD STUART
MERIDIAN Ml ACTIVE LOUDSPEAKER
The Boothroyd Stuart Meridian Ml Active Loudspeaker is a precision musical transducer of advanced design.
In order to achieve the very best results from the loudspeaker i t will be necessary to read this instruction sheet and spend some time in careful listening to arrive at the final position in the room.
If you are in any doubt please consult your dealer.
Do not connect the loudspeaker without reading the section on connection.
Unpacking
Carefully remove the electronics section in the separate carton and take care not to discard any plugs and spare leads supplied.
Lay the large pack on its side and carefully slide the loudspeakerenclosure.out.
Retain all packing materials for future use.
If supplied, keep all test documents under the amplifier tray for future reference.
Take care not to hold the cabinet at the back where the
ABR drive unit is located.
Cabinets finished in ash veneer with a painted topcoat, should be cleaned!with normal furniture creams or aerosol polishes but no other solvents must be used.
Oiled wood finishes must be treated with suitable oils and not polish.
The 'Crimplene' grille and back cloth may be brushed clean and sponged with a damp cloth if necessary.
The Ml Active Loudspeaker is designed to accept signals from either (i) a pre-amplifier source or head amplifier with variable output or (ii) a balanced line signal from a mixer or professional pre-amplifier.
2.
Each system requires its own electronics tray to be placed in the base of the loudspeaker cabinet with the label towards the front grille.
This tray is free standing on rubber feet and must be moved from the enclosure before transporting the loudspeaker.
A cable fitted with a 6 way plug is attached to the loudspeaker cabinet and this should be plugged to the
'ENCLOSURE CONNECTION SOCKET' on the electronics tray (see diagram).
The connections needed to be made to complete the installation are :-
The switched. mains power is taken from the driving amplifier or preamplifier.
A three core 'Y' configuration cable connects between the main power input sockets on the rear ' of each speaker electronics set using the lead supplied.
For a low level from a pre-amplifier such as the
Meridian 101 Control Unit, a screened cable is
·used to carry the signals to each loudspeaker.
The twin screened cable should be carefully divided at the loudspeaker end to provide adequate tails to reach each speaker.
The sensitivity of the M1 is OdBm (775mV) into
4kO, i t is internally selectable ~y your dealer to -20dBm (77.5mV) and may be driven by a balanced line @ 6000.
The connections to the 5 pin Cannon
XLR are:-
1.
Common Ground

3.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES make or break connections to the interactive speaker when the unit is switched on since this could cause loud interference noise or damage.
Positioning
The interactive loudspeakers have an integral stand and are intended to be floor standing.
It is not possible to lay down any hard and fast rules about the positioning of a loudspeaker in the listening room.
The design o~ the speaker ensures tha£ the enclosure sits the correct distance off the floor and that the mid and high frequency signals are presented to the seated listener around ear level.
In a normally furnished living room the quality~f sound produced by a loudspeaker is very dependent upon the distance of the loudspeaker from the walls.
The very best result will usually be obtained with the speaker placed with its back 1m from one wall and the loudspeakers, each at least 1m from a side wall.
Ideally the two speakers should face the listening position being angled in towards each other very slightly and at least 2m apart.
Larger spacing may be required if the listening position i~ more than' 3m from the loudspeakers.
General Points
WARNING - THE SPEAKER ELECTRONICS MUST BE EARTHED
(GROUNDEO)*
The case of the electronics is isolated from signal earth (ground).
In all cases ensure that
3 core cable is used on the Power Input
,and that the green/yellow wire is connected to a reliable earth.
4.
If the 101 is used to drive the Ml, then its outlet is earthed provided that the 3 core cable powering the pre-amplifier 101 is connected to the mains earth.
*Rote this provision may not apply in some countries outside the U.K.
If in any doubt consult your dealer.
The interactive loudspeakers are fitted with an automatic system which protects the speaker by swtiching off for a few 'seconds if the unit is overdriven.
This is a normal function of the speaker but i t should only happen at very loud levels.
"
When carrying the loudspeaker great care should be taken not to damage the drive units.
It will be found that to remove the grille frame will facilitate hand holds.
Always disconnect and remove the amplifier section before carrying the loudspeaker.
Service
In the event of malfunction consult your dealer.
If i t is necessary to return the unit to a service centre for repair i t is suggested that initially only the amplifier section be returned.
This' is possible because the electronics are designed to protect the loudspeak~r ~ection from damage.
