This product is intended to safely provide turn by turn instruction to get you to a desired destination. Please read the following precautions to ensure that you use your navigation system correctly.

L This product is not a substitute for your personal judgment. Any route suggestions made by the navigation system may never supersede any local traffic regulations or your personal judgment and/or knowledge of safe driving practices. Do not follow route suggestions if the navigation system instructs you to perform an unsafe or illegal maneuver, places you in an unsafe situation, or routes you into an area which you consider unsafe.

L Glance at the monitor screen only when necessary and safe to do so. If prolonged viewing of the screen is necessary, stop the vehicle in a safe and legal manner and location.

L Do not input destinations, change settings, or access any functions requiring a prolonged view of the monitor and/or remote control while you are driving.

Stop the vehicle in a safe and legal manner and location before attempting to access the system.

L Do not use the navigation system to route you to emergency services. Not all locations of emergency service providers such as police and fire stations, hospitals, and clinics are contained in the database. Please use your own judgment and your ability to ask for directions in these situations.

L The map database contained within the media (DVD ROM) in which it is stored is the most recent map data available at the time of production. Because of changes in streets and neighbourhoods, there may be situations where the navigation system may not be able to route you to your desired destination. In these cases, use your own personal judgment.

L The map database is designed to provide you with route suggestions, it does not take account of the relative safety of a suggested route, or of factors which may affect the time required to reach your destination. The database does not reflect road closures or construction, road characteristics (i.e. type of road surface, slope or grade, weight or height restrictions, etc.), traffic congestion, weather conditions, or any other factors which may affect the safety or timing of your driving experience. Use your personal judgment if the navigation system is unable to provide you with an alternate route.

L There may be situations where the navigation system may display the vehicle's location erroneously. Use your own driving judgment in this situation, taking into account of current driving conditions. Please be aware that in this situation, the navigation system should correct the vehicle's position automatically; however, there may be times where you may have to correct the position yourself. If this is the case, stop the vehicle in a safe and legal manner and location before attempting operation.

L Make certain that the volume level of the monitor is set to a level which still allows you to hear outside traffic and emergency vehicles. Driving while unable to hear outside sounds could cause an accident.

L Please make certain that any other person who intends on using the navigation system reads these precautions and the following instructions carefully.

L If there is anything in the manual which you do not understand, or are uncertain about the operation of the navigation system, please contact an authorized

Alpine representative before using the navigation system.

In using this DVD-ROM "SMART MAP PRO" (hereinafter referred to as "Disk"), as part of the Aisin AW Co., Ltd. ("Aisin AW") and Navigation Technologies Corporation ("NavTech") Database (hereinafter referred to as "Database"), you are bound by the terms and conditions set forth below. By breaking the seal on this package, and using your copy of the Database and Disk, you have demonstrated your agreement to the terms and conditions of this Agreement. You should therefore, make sure that you read and understand the following provisions.

• The Disk and Database may not be copied, duplicated, processed, or otherwise modified, in whole or in part, without the express written permission of Aisin AW,

NavTech and Alpine Electronics, Inc. ("Alpine").

This manual explains operation assuming that Alpine NVE-N077P and RUE-4131 are used. If other model(s) are used, some display screens may vary and locations of the buttons on the remote control are different (see "Buttons and functions of remote control" on page 50).

For operation, refer to the manuals for the units you use in addition to this manual.

Preface

Navigation terminology

Navigation

The navigation system displays and tracks the vehicle's position and movement on a moving map display. When a destination is input, the navigation system quickly calculates a route and guides you along the route with pictorial displays and voice prompts.

Present vehicle position

The navigation system integrates the GPS (Global

Positioning Satellite) signals received and the map information stored on the DVD ROM to display the position and direction of the vehicle. The system also includes a gyroscope and a speed sensor that enable it to display the present position even in locations where the GPS signal may be blocked.

Map matching

Since GPS navigation has an error of 100 – 655 feet

(30 m – 200 m), the position of your vehicle may be displayed off the road. Map matching automatically corrects this error so that the position of your vehicle is displayed on the road.

You specify points you wish to pass by along the way to your destination and they are indicated with the waypoint icons in the display.

Memory points

Locations you go to frequently can be stored into memory and marked on the map. The system can store up to 200 points, including your home. You can add icons at the memory points so that the system displays the icons too on the map.

Motorway-preference selection

When searching for routes with the navigation system, you can switch between searching for routes that give priority to motorways and those that give priority to ordinary roads. When you specify motorway preference, the navigation system automatically searches for a route that gives priority to motorways and guides you along that route.

The point on the map that is your destination is specified and displayed with the destination icon.

When a destination is input, the navigation system automatically calculates a route and displays it in blue on the map.

Tracking

The tracks indicate the roads you have driven over with blue dots. There is a limit on the amount of memory available for storing your tracks (up to 31 miles/50 km).

When you exceed this memory capacity, the tracks are erased starting from the earliest portion.

Features

• Automatic Route Calculation

Just select the destination and your navigation system does the rest, automatically searching for the route you need. When searching for the route, you can select the route that gives priority to motorways or ordinary roads.

• Real Time Voice Guide

A voice guide informs you of the distance and direction until your course changes, giving advice timed to match road conditions.

The VOICE button lets you call up the voice guide when needed by just pushing the button.

• Alternate Route Setting

Two types of route settings:

1. Quick setting of alternate routes when traffic flow is obstructed.

2. Distance for alternate roundabout route can be selected by driver (within 0.6 to 3 miles or 1 to 5 km).

• Automatic Border Point Calculation

When you travel crossing the map border, the navigation system automatically chooses an appropriate border point to pass through when you set your destination. To select a destination that is located outside of the map border, select the desired country from the

"country selection" menu. For details, see page 17.

• Direct Inputting of Telephone

Number

From the telephone number of a place of interest stored in the disk or a memory point you have stored, the system can search for the destination.

• Voice Guidance at an Exit or Junction on Motorways

When you approach an exit or junction on the motorway, the system gives you voice guidance using the same name as shown on the road signboards.

• Next Turn Guide

As you approach the place where you actually have to turn, about 1000 feet (300 metres) prior to the crossroads or junction, the system informs you of which direction you have to turn with voice and picture guidance.

• Traffic-Circle Turn Guidance

At a traffic circle, the system guides you where to turn by indicating the road number starting with the entered road.

• Map Zooming

You can change the map display in 13 magnification scales (100, 200, 400, 800, 1.6K, 3.2K,

6.4K, 12K, 25K, 50K, 100K, 200K and 400K metres) to show more detailed or wider views.

• Direct Input of Name of Place of

Interest

Input only the name of a place of interest

(without inputting the city name) to search for the route to the place of interest.

• Direct Input of Street Name

Just input the street name (no need to input the city name) to search for the route to the street.

• Sequence of Waypoints Can Be

Changed (Today's Plan)

Your navigation system can automatically sort the sequence of the waypoints in order of distance starting with the nearest waypoint.

Or, you can manually change the sequence of the waypoints in any order as you like.

• Intersection Zoom

As you near intersections and cross points, the map display automatically zooms in to show a more detailed view that you will need.

This means there is no need to press the

ZOOM buttons.

• Built-in Gyroscope and Speed

Sensors

The gyroscope for sensing direction and the speed pulse sensor for detecting distance provide data which allows vehicle position and direction to be displayed even in locations where the GPS signal cannot be received such as between buildings or in tunnels.

• Motorway Information Display

When you travel on motorways, the basic guidance display (with an arrow) automatically shows the distances to the next fuel station/ restaurant/parking/junction (except exit).

Rewriting operating system programme

If a different version of the map disc has been used with your navigation system, the operating system programme installed will be rewritten automatically to read this SMART MAP PRO disc.

1 Remove the different version of the map disc from your navigation system. Insert this SMART MAP

PRO disc. (For removing and inserting procedure, refer to the

Owner's Manual of the system.)

The display shows "Set Original CD-

ROM" while the disc is being loaded, then it shows "Program DVD-ROM is being loaded." and the system rewrites the operating system programme.

2 If the language has not been selected yet (when the system is used for the first time), the guide language selection menu is displayed. Select (highlight) the desired guide language by tilting the joystick. Then press the

ENTER button. (For details, see the

"Setting language mode" section.)

Note: For the locations and functions of the remote control's buttons, see pages 50 and 51.

3 The opening screen appears in the display.

For the procedure after this, see "Before

Using The System" on page 12.

Note: If a different version of the map disc is inserted after the system programme has been rewritten, the selection menu appears in the display.

Select the desired menu item by tilting the joystick on the remote control and pressing the ENTER button on the joystick. The opening screen appears on the display.

10 Progress of rewriting

How to switch the map displays

Once the route setting has been performed and travelling started, the navigation system provides the driver all of the major route information with real time voice directions and guidance displays. You can manually select the desired guidance displays for your convenience.

The Basic Guidance Display is automatically displayed when travelling starts. Pressing the

button on the remote control while the Basic

Guidance Display is being displayed switches to the Detailed Map. To return to the Basic

Guidance Display, press the button again.

Motorway Exit Number

Distance to next guidance, direction and distance to destination.

Anticipated arrival time and required time.

Current time.

Basic Guidance Display

Current vehicle position.

Direction for next turning.

Direction for second turning.

This portion is displayed only when a wide-screen monitor is connected.

Shows the progress of travel between the starting point (or waypoint past) and the destination.

The coloured portion shows the remaining distance to the destination.

Distance travelled.

Compass display

Shows the compass direction for up on the current map.

N : North

Detailed Map Display

: Heading up

(The arrowhead shows the direction of north.)

*GPS Signal Strength Colour Key

No icon : No satellite information being received.

Red : Satellite signals are being calculated.

Blue : Information from 1 to 3 satellites being received. Latitude and longitude information can be determined.

Green : Signals from 4 or more satellites being received. Indicates full signal strength.

Latitude, longitude and altitude can be accurately determined.

During navigation, when your vehicle approaches an intersection, the Zoomed Intersection Map of that intersection is displayed. This enlarged Intersection Map gives you further information to the voice guidance.

(Sometimes, the enlarged crossroads map is displayed even when you are going to go straight.)

Pressing the button while the

Name of next junction ahead.

• Street name you are on now

This icon appears when destination is near.

This portion is displayed only when a wide-screen monitor is connected.

The coloured portion shows the remaining distance to next junction/intersection

800m ahead on motorway or 300m ahead on ordinary road by colours as follows.

Before Using The System

Switching the display on/off

With the Alpine navigation system, when the ignition key is turned to ACC or ON and the display monitor is set in the navigation display mode or external input display mode, the opening screen will be automatically displayed.

For operation of the remote control, see page 50 and the Owner's Manual for your system.

1-1 When the system is used for the first time, the language selection menu is displayed.

Select (highlight) the desired language by tilting the joystick.

Then press the ENTER button.

(For details, see the "Setting language mode" section.)

Note: For English, you can select the distance indications in either M

(Mile) or km (Kilometre). For other languages, only kilometre is used for the distance indications.

2 After you have read this important information, press the ENTER button.

The map screen is displayed.

3 With the map displayed, press the

OFF button on the remote control to turn off the display monitor.

If you press the POWER button, the opening screen is displayed.

Tips a If there is no disc in the navigation system, "Please insert map DVD ROM" is displayed. For details on how to load the disc, refer to the "Inserting a disc" and

"Removing a disc" sections on the manual for the navigation system.

a If the inserted disc cannot be read, the "DVD ROM unreadable. Please check DVD

ROM" message is displayed.

Load the correct disc.

a If for an extended period of time the monitor is kept on with the engine off, the battery may discharge.

1-2 The opening screen is displayed. After the opening screen is displayed, important information saying "Please be sure to read this!" is displayed.

Be sure to read it.

Setting the language mode

For the picture/voice guidance and texts, you can choose one of 6 languages as follows.

• German (Deutsch)

• English (M or km)

• French (Français)

• Italian (Italiano)

• Dutch (Nederlands)

• Spanish (Español)

The guidance language can be changed whenever you like by following the procedure below.

1 Press the MENU button to display the main menu.

Select (highlight) "Set-up" from the main menu. The sub-menu is automatically displayed, select

"LANGUAGE" from the sub-menu and press ENTER.

This triangle indicates that there is a continuation of the list. Tilt the joystick to scroll the list.

3 The important message saying

"Please be sure to read this!" is displayed. After you have read this important message, press ENTER.


Note: Some operation of the system cannot be performed while the vehicle is in motion. In this case, be sure to first stop your vehicle and apply the parking brake, then perform the operation.

A sub-menu appears in the display. Select the desired language and press ENTER.

Note: For English, you can select the distance indications in either M (Mile) or km (Kilometre).

For other languages, only kilometre is used for the distance indications.

Before Using The System

Manual backup

The navigation system will automatically back up (save) your new settings (for example, memory point settings etc.) when the ignition switch is turned off and turned on again. If the battery leads should be disconnected from the vehicle's battery, be sure to manually back up your new settings before disconnecting the battery leads as described below.

1 Press the MENU button to display the main menu. Select "Set-up" from the main menu, then select

"BACKUP MEMORY" from the submenu and press ENTER.

3 The navigation system starts the backup process and the display becomes darker for a little while.

The display shows the opening screen, then "Please be sure to read this!" screen.

2 The "Backup now?" menu appears. If your answer is yes, select "Yes" and press ENTER.

4 After you have read this important information, press the ENTER button.


Searching For Destinations

Selecting Countries

When you search for your destinations or points of interest in other countries from their addresses or categories, choose the desired country first by following the procedure below.

1 Press the MENU button to display the main menu. Then select

"Dest." from the main menu to search for a desired destination, or select "Search" to search for a desired point of interest. The submenu automatically appears.

Tips

You can select your desired locations in the 15 countries.

Some country areas include neighbouring countries as follows:

FRANCE area: France (F), Andorra

(AND) and Monaco

ITALY area:

(MC)

Italy (I), San Marino

(RSM) and Vatican (V)

SPAIN area: Spain (E) and Andorra

(AND)

AUSTRIA area: Austria (A) and

Liechtenstein (FL)

SWITZERLAND area: Switzerland (CH) and Liechtenstein (FL)

4 The display returns to the main menu screen automatically.

(When "Dest." is selected.)

2 Select "COUNTRY" from the submenu and press ENTER to display the current country map.

3 Select the country to be searched by tilting the joystick and pressing

ENTER.

For example, if you wish to go to Paris, select "FRANCE."

(When "Dest." is selected.)

5 Now, your desired country to be searched has been activated.

Search for your desired destination or point of interest.

You can directly search for a destination in two ways, using its category (pages 16 to 18) or its address (pages 19 and 20). To search for a location, use its category (page 22) or its address

(pages 23 and 24).

Searching For Destinations

Searching for destination from category

(Easy mode)

If you know the category of the desired destination, you can easily display that destination by just selecting the desired category from the displayed category list.

The display examples show when Holiday Inn

(hotel), Crown Plaza is searched for.

The desired destination can also be searched for from its address, see pages 19 to 20.


Select "Dest." from the main menu, the "Input destination by

Moving the map to search for locations

The map can be freely moved with the joystick in 8 directions. The best way to find a location is first to display the wide range map and specify the approx. location. You can find the desired location efficiently by specifying more and more detailed maps. When the point menu appears, you can search for your route with one touch.

1 With the map screen displayed, tilt the remote control joystick in any of the eight directions.

Searching for locations by latitude/longitude input

If you know the latitude and longitude of the desired location, you can display that location by just inputting those numbers.

1 Press the MENU button to display the main menu. Select "Search" from the main menu, then select

LAT/LONG. INPUT from the submenu and press ENTER.

2 The map moves in the direction in which the joystick is tilted.

Searching from local points

The system can display up to 5 points (max.) of interest in a range of 6 miles (10 km) around the reticule icon such as hospitals, parking lots, petrol stations, restaurants, train stations, airports, hotels, tourist information offices, and ferries. You can search for the desired destination from these local points.

1 Display the POINT SET menu in a searching mode or by pressing the

LO.PT. button on the remote control (RUE-4131), and select

"LOCAL POINTS" then press

ENTER.

3 The reticule icon appears at the selected local point, then the point menu appears.

Select the desired name of point of interest and press ENTER.

First, you register your home. When your home is registered, setting the destination for returning home is simple. In order to specify the position accurately, use as detailed a map as possible.

If your home is not yet registered, select "YES" and press ENTER.

The home registration confirmation message appears if your home has not been registered.

1 Bring the point on the map you wish to register as your home under the reticule icon or place your vehicle in front of your home, then press ENTER.

If you select NO or no input at all here, the position is registered to the memory point with the lowest number to which no position has yet been registered.

Changing sequence of waypoints for Today's

Select "SHORT" and press ENTER.

The sequence of the waypoints to go through can be automatically sorted in order of distance from the current vehicle position, or it can be manually changed in any order as you like.

1 Press the MENU button to display the main menu. Select "Route" from the main menu, then press

ENTER.

2 The "Edit current route" menu appears. Select "ROUTE EDITING" and press ENTER.

The ROUTE EDITING menu appears.

The system calculates the short route and displays the destination confirmation screen with the visiting sequence.

4a The "Do you include your destination?" menu appears. If your answer is yes, select "Yes" and press ENTER.

If your answer is no, select "No" and press ENTER. The sequence of the waypoints (excluding the destination) will be changed in order of distance from the current vehicle position. Then proceed to next step.

5a The Today's Plan list with the new sequence is displayed. If the sequence displayed is acceptable, select "APPLY" and press ENTER.

If the new sequence displayed is unacceptable, you can reinstate the original sequence by selecting "RESET" and pressing ENTER.

6a The System calculates the new route and displays the confirmation screen.

Deciding The Route

Drive simulation

To check the searched route, you can carry out a drive simulation by selecting "Inform" from the main menu, then selecting "AUTO DRIVE." The icon for the present vehicle position moves along the route indicating the contents of guidance that will be provided, such as crossroads guidance and voice guidance.

If waypoints have been set, the simulation goes to the waypoint but if only the destination has been set, the simulation goes to the destination.

1 Press the MENU button to display the main menu. Select "Inform" from the main menu, then select

"AUTO DRIVE" and press ENTER.

3 To end the drive simulation, press the RETURN button.

After the "Demo finished." message, the navigation system returns automatically to the map screen.

Tips

During the drive simulation, the system accepts operation of the

, VOICE and POS. buttons in addition to the OFF and

RETURN buttons.

* The drive simulation begins the voice guidance with the currently selected language and continues on to other languages. The languages change in the following sequence, for example:

When "ON" is selected, the unit automatically calculates the time using the signal received from

GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites and displays the time at the left side of the display screen. Manual time setting is not required.

b Setting summer time

Select "ON" to display the summer time.

c Estimated arrival and journey time display

When "ON" is selected, the unit estimates the arrival time and journey time to the destination when the route to the destination has been calculated. The analog clock displays the estimated arrival time and automatically updates with vehicle's movement.

The digital clock displays the required journey time and automatically updates with vehicle's movement.

"NORM." (Normal Road) for average speed.

4 The graphic screen appears in the display for the selected menu. Tilt the joystick to the right or left to increase or decrease the average speed respectively. When setting has been finished, press ENTER to end the setting procedure.

If the actual direction of your vehicle and the direction of the present vehicle position icon on the map differ, you can correct the direction of the present vehicle position icon with the following method.

Screen position adjustment

For some TV monitors that can be connected to the navigation system, the screen display will be out of place. Adjust the display position to match the TV monitor you connect to the system.

Press the MENU button to display the main menu. Select "Set-up" from the main menu, then select

Distance coefficient

The navigation system measures the distance with the speedometer pulses. Since the speedometer pulses depend on the vehicle manufacturer and the tyre size, when you buy a new vehicle or replace your tyres, the speedometer pulses are compared with the distance measured with GPS waves and the distance coefficient is automatically recalibrated.

You can check on the screen whether or not speedometer pulses are being counted.

Viewing GPS screens Viewing odometer

GPS satellite information being received is displayed on the screen. If the error for the current vehicle's position is too large, check how many GPS satellites you are receiving.

You can also see the current heading of your vehicle and its current speed.

The odometer displays the route distance/time travelled since the power to the navigation system was switched on.

Speedometer

Tips a Satellites from which you are receiving are displayed green and those from which you are not receiving are displayed red. Blue indicates that your position is being calculated.

If you encounter a problem, please review the items in the following checklist. This guide will help you isolate the problem if the system is at fault. Otherwise, make sure the system is properly connected or consult your authorized Alpine dealer.

This product is intended to safely provide turn by turn instruction to get you to a desired destination. Please read the following precautions to ensure that you use this navigation system correctly.

✵ This product is not a substitute for your personal judgment. Any route suggestions made by this navigation system may never supersede any local traffic regulations or your personal judgment and/or knowledge of safe driving practices. Do not follow route suggestions if the navigation system instructs you to perform an unsafe or illegal maneuver, places you in an unsafe situation, or routes you into an area which you consider unsafe.

✵ Glance at the screen only when necessary and safe to do so. If prolonged viewing of the screen is necessary, stop in a safe and legal manner and location.

✵ Do not input destinations, change settings, or access any functions requiring a prolonged view of the monitor and/or remote control while you are driving. Stop in a safe and legal manner and location before attempting to access the system.

✵ Do not use the navigation system to route you to emergency services.

Not all locations of emergency service providers such as police and fire stations, hospitals, and clinics are contained in the database. Please use your own judgment and your ability to ask for directions in these situations.

✵ The map database contained within the media (DVD ROM) in which it is stored is the most recent map data available at the time of production.

Because of changes in streets and neighborhoods, there may be situations where the navigation system may not be able to route you to your desired destination. In these cases, use your own personal judgment.

✵ The map database is designed to provide you with route suggestions, it does not take account of the relative safety of a suggested route, or of factors which may affect the time required to reach your destination. The system does not reflect road closures or construction, road characteristics (i.e.

type of road surface, slope or grade, weight or height restrictions, etc.), traffic congestion, weather conditions, or any other factors which may affect the safety or timing of your driving experience. Use your personal judgment if the navigation system is unable to provide you with an alternate route.

✵ There may be situations where the navigation system may display the vehicle’s location erroneously. Use your own driving judgment in this situation, taking into account current driving conditions. Please be aware that in this situation, the navigation system should correct the vehicle’s position automatically; however, there may be times where you may have to correct the position yourself. If this is the case, stop in a safe and legal manner and location before attempting operation.

✵ Make certain that the volume level of the monitor is set to a level which still allows you to hear outside traffic and emergency vehicles.

Driving while unable to hear outside sounds could cause an accident.

✵ Position the monitor so that glancing at the screen can be performed quickly and easily by the driver. If any adjustments are necessary, stop in a safe and legal manner and location.

✵ The monitor used with this system should not be placed in a location which hinders the driver’s view of any critical elements necessary to operate the vehicle properly (i.e. the road, mirrors, instruments, vehicle’s surroundings). In addition, the monitor should not be placed in a location which may obstruct the air bags should they deploy.

✵ Remember to wear your seat belt at all times when the car is in motion.

This will help you avoid impact with anything in the car’s interior, including the system itself.

✵ Please make certain that any other person who intends on using this navigation system reads these precautions and the following instructions carefully.

✵ If there is anything in the manual which you do not understand, or are uncertain about the operation of the navigation system, please contact an authorized representative before using the navigation system.

Navigation systems

This navigation system uses three different sensing devices to determine the present location and to track the progress of the vehicle. These three devices are: a GPS (Global Positioning

System) receiver which receives digital signals from the GPS satellites to determine the current position of the vehicle, a gyroscope which determines which direction the vehicle turns, and a speedometer pulse sensor which determine how far the vehicle has travelled. Because this system incorporates a gyroscope and a speed sensor, the system will be able to display the vehicle's position and track the vehicle's progress even in areas where the GPS signal may be blocked.

All map data is contained on a removable DVD ROM (sold separately). This system integrates this unique map database with the sensing devices to automatically plot out a route when a destination is entered. While driving, the navigation system guides you along the route with pictorial displays and verbal prompts.

GPS (Global Positioning System)

This system receives signals from 3 or more

GPS satellites (operated by the United

States Department of Defense) orbiting at an altitude of 21,000 kilometers and measures the present car position using the same principles as triangulation.

Delay time before the present vehicle's position can be displayed

Determination of the present vehicle's position starts when the ignition key is turned to the ACC or ON positions and ends when the key is turned OFF. When the key is first turned to the ACC or ON positions, there is a slight delay of approximately one to two minutes before the present vehicle's position can be displayed.

The error from the actual position of the vehicle

When GPS signals can be received from 4 or more satellites, 3 dimensional positioning

(the altitude, latitude, and longitude) of the vehicle can be determined. In this case, the error from the actual position of the vehicle is in the range of 100 to 655 feet (30 to 200 meters). When GPS signals can only be received from 3 satellites, only two dimensional positioning (latitude and longitude) can be determined, resulting in a slightly increased error. When GPS signals can only be received from less than three satellites, positioning of the vehicle through

GPS is not possible. In addition to the inherent errors from GPS, the error rate can also be increased if the United States

Department of Defense deliberately changes the accuracy rate.

Gyroscope

The gyroscope is a sensor that accurately measures the angle by which the direction of a vehicle or other moving body changes.

Gyroscopes are used in inertial navigation systems for airliners and ships. In this navigation system, the gyroscope is used together with the speed sensor, making it possible to display the position of the vehicle even in locations where GPS signals may be blocked.

Locations where GPS signals are received easily

The optimum locations for receiving GPS signals are locations that command a good view where there are no tall buildings, trees, or other objects to obstruct the signals.

Locations where GPS signals cannot be received

In the following locations or conditions GPS signals cannot be received. However even in these locations, the gyroscope and speed sensor will provide a substitute means of determining the vehicle's position and the system will be able to continue to track the vehicle's progress along the route.

In tunnels and indoor parking lots

Locations surrounded by tall buildings

Locations surrounded by tall trees

On the bottom level of double-decker motorways

When a GPS satellite is low on the horizon (angle below 10

), obstructions sometimes make normal reception impossible

Remote control transmitter

This section transmits the remote control signals.

Point toward the monitor display for operation.

Rotary encoder

This has multiple functions. In map displays, zooms in or out; in list displays, scrolls list pages; in coordinate inputting, moves cursor; in alphabet inputting, moves alphabetical characters.

ENTER button

Selects a highlighted item in the menu when the button is pressed.

Press this button until a click sound is produced to execute your selection.

MENU button

Displays the menu screen.

• Use these buttons to enter phone numbers, address numbers or street names containing numbers

Tips

Stickers are provided with the remote control to be used by the people who speak one of the five other languages than English.

Returns the navigation system to the previous searching.

Returns to the current position of your vehicle or displays the latitude/longitude.

Press the door in gently then slide it downwards.

If a DVD-ROM is already in the main unit, the DVD-ROM is automatically ejected part way.

Insert the DVD-ROM with the label side facing up.

When you insert the DVD-ROM into a certain position, it is automatically pulled into the navigation system.

Tips

Do not touch the surface of the disc directly with your fingers.

Tips a Keep the door closed except when changing the DVD-ROM.

a Before inserting or removing the DVD-

ROM, always turn the ignition key to

ACC or ON. You cannot remove or insert the DVD-ROM with the ignition key turned OFF.

a Do not insert any DVD Video discs or map DVD-ROM.

Precautions for the remote control

Tips a This device is lightweight and compact. Do not drop it or bump it. Do not put it in your trousers pocket. Doing so could break it, speed up battery wear, or cause malfunction.

a To clean this device, wipe it off with a dry cloth. (If it is extremely dirty, wipe it off with a damp cloth that has been carefully wrung out.) Never use benzene, paint thinner or harsh chemicals. They cause deterioration of the case and paint. Do not leave this remote control on the dashboard or anywhere else subject to direct sunlight.

Replacing the batteries

Use two AA-type batteries.

Switching the display on/off

With this system, when the display monitor is set in the navigation display mode or external input display mode and the ignition key is turned to the ACC or ON positions, the opening screen will automatically appear.

When the system is used for the first time, the language selection menu is displayed. Select (highlight) the desired language by tilting the joystick.

Then press the ENTER button.

Note: For English, you can select the distance indications in either

M (Mile) or km (Kilometre). For other languages, only kilometer is used for the distance indications.

After the opening screen is displayed, important information saying

"Please be sure to read this!" is displayed. Be sure to read it.

Tips a If there is no disc in the navigation system, "Please insert map DVD ROM" is displayed. For details on how to load the disc, see "Inserting the DVD-ROM" and

"Removing the DVD-ROM" on page 12.

a If the disc cannot be read, the "DVD ROM unreadable. Please check DVD ROM" message is displayed. Try reloading the disk and if the problem cannot be cured, return to an authorized Alpine dealer.

a If the monitor is kept on with the engine off for an extended period of time, the vehicle’s battery may discharge.

If you encounter a problem, please review the items in the following checklist. This guide will help you isolate the problem if the unit is at fault. Otherwise, make sure the rest of your system is properly connected or consult your authorized Alpine dealer.

Various messages are displayed on the screen during operation. In addition to the messages telling you the current status or providing guidance for the next operation, there are also the following error messages. If one of these error messages is displayed, carefully follow the instructions in the solution column.

Vibration or the like made it impossible to read the disc.

The MENU button was pressed while the vehicle was running.

A menu selection operation was carried out while the vehicle was running.

Take out the disc, check if it was upside down, clean it if necessary, then reinsert it.

Take out the disc, allow enough time for the condensation to evaporate (about 1 hour), then re-insert the disc.

When the disc check is complete, the following screen is displayed automatically.

Move the vehicle to a safe location, stop, and engage the parking brake, then carry out this operation.
