OPERATION
Your Beogram 4002 is very simple t o operate. All you have t o do is put a disc on the turntable and press the ON button.
The automatic control sy- stem will then rotate the turn- table at the correct speed and bring the pickup in to the first groove of the disc and lower it. When the record has finis- hed, the pickup lifts and tra- vels out t o the side, and the turntable stops.
Manual Operation
Your Beogram 4002 also can be operated manually. You can stop, pause, resume play in any desired place on the disc, or repeat a section.
OFF
Stop
If you wish t o stop play be- fore the disc hasfinished, press OFF. The pickup will rise, the tonearm will return to the rest position and the turntable will stop.
Pause
You can pause anywhere whi- le playing a disc. A light pressure applied t o the ver- tical cueswitch will l i f t the tonearm. The tonearm will be lowered when you press a se- cond time.
Horizontal Cueing
If you do not wish t o listen t o a record from the beginning, hold the ON switch down.
The tonearm will travel across the disc until you lower the stylus into the groove by pressing the vertical cue switch.
This movement across the dich i s relatively quick. If you prefer slower scanning, press
(4) instead. Movement will occur only as long as you press the button. To lower, press (3).
>> OFF
Repeat
When you wish t o repeat a section you have already heard, you can do it in t w o ways:
Rapid scanning: By pressing
OFF you can cause the pick- up t o travel out until you lo- wer the stylus by pressing
(3). Slow Scanning: Keep (2) depressed until the stylus is above the desired place and thereafter press (3).
Discswith Largecenter Holes
To play a disc with a large center hole first place the adaptor on the record spindle.
Speed
Your Beogram 4002 automa- tically selects the proper speed, indicated by illumina- tion of oneof the scales, 33 or 45. In the case of special 7" discs to be played at 33 r.p.m. you can select the speed yourself:
First press ON, and keep 33 depressed until the stylus has been lowered into the groove.
Fine Speed Adjustment
Your Beogram 4002 has two pointers and adjustment wheels for reading and ( i f required) adjusting the speed. The33and45 r.p.m. speeds can be adjusted indi- vidually.
Care of Discs
In designing the Beogram
4002, every effort has been made to ensure that your re- cords can be played many times with no deterioration of sound quality. However, there is something you can do. You can minimize wear by avoiding dust particles and finger prints on your re- cords. Dust can be wiped off using one of the aids which are commercially available.
We assume that you keep your discs in their jackets.
Care should be taken in re- moving a disc because the friction against the inner side of the jacket is enough to give the disc a static charge which attracts dust. Hold the disc jacket so that its sides bend away from the disc. Put your hand in below the disc so that the middle finger touches the center hole and the thumb grips the rim of the disc, without touching the grooves of the disc. Pull the disc out of its jacket in such a mannerthat the jacket only touches the edge of the disc, not the flat surfaces. Hold only the rim of the disc when putting it on the turntable.
Keep the dust cover of your
Beogram 4002 closed while playing the disc.
Put the disc back in its jacket in the same careful manner, avoiding friction between the sides of the disc and the jac- ket. By doing so you help to reduce the need for antistatic wiping of your disc. Should this become necessary, pro- ceed as follows:
Wiping Records
Put the record on the turn- table. press the 33 button and keep it depressed. The turn- table will rotate without acti- vating the pickup, enabling you to wipe the record. The motor will stop when the 33 button is released.
:::I
Dust is certain to collect around the diamond stylus.
The cleaning brush supplied with your Beogram 4002 is specially designed for clean- ing the stylus, and the sketch shows how to use it. Hold

SETTING UP
Assembly after Transport
Your Beogram 4002 is pro- tected in several waysagainst damage i n transit.
It is important that your Beo- gram is correctly assem bled and set up after it is unpac- ked. I f you wish, you may leave this dealer.
The following components are enclosed in the foam in- serts in thecarton:
1 Dust cover
2 Turntable
3 Pick-up
4 Adapter
The pickup carton contains the following items:
Pickup cartridge with sty- lus guard
Screwdriver for stylus force adjustment
Cleaning brush for pickup stylus
Balance for checking sty- lus force.
NOTE: Keep the original packing and this instruction for use at a later transport.
Unnecessary damage may be done to the record player if is sent without being correctly securedandpacked.
Turn three lock screws in the bottom of the turntable unit anti-clockwise against the stop (towards PLAY).
AC Connection
Your Beogram 4002 will ope- rate on 117 Volts AC only at line frequencies of both 50 and 60 Hz without switching of any kind.
Mounting the Dust Cover
The dust cover has an alumi- nium panel which contains the hlnge and spring system proper. To secure this panel to the turntable unit, proceed as follows:
I Turn two screws in the rear corners in the boltom of the turntable unit anti- clockwise, pressing a fin- ger against the surface of the lock bushing to pre- vent it from rotating.
2 When the screws have been loosened sufficient-
Ly to permit the bushings to get raised 5 - 6 mm, the aluminium panel of the dust cover may be brought in below the heads of the two lock bushings.
3 Retighten the screws.
You may find it neces- sary first to close the cover and bring it into position before finally tightenning the screws.
Record turntable
The record turntable is placed on the lower turntable with the black ribs facing up- wards.
Pickup
Remove the transit protection device, inserted between Ihe two arms.
Insert the pickup cartridge in the pickup arm.
Remove the stylus guard.
Stylus Force Adjuslmenl
Recommended stylus force for the MMC 4000 is 1 gram.
The adjusting device (13) al- lows adjustment of stylus force between 0 and 1.5 gram.
Use the screwdriverwhich is provided, reading thevalue on the small scale.
9
Checking the Stylus Force
A check on the stylus force can be performed with the stylus-force balance which is provided. Place the balance on thechassis deck, to the right of the turntable, and control the pickup so that it is lowered on to the scale of the balance. To do this, first press ON and quickly there- after (4). By alternately pres- sing (3), (2) cause the stylus to go down on that point of the balance where equilibrium exists.
Read the number on the ba- lance , which can be com- pared with the reading on
(1 3). If a variance is noted, we suggest that you have your dealer adjust the tone- arm counterbalance.
Measuring accuracy of the stylus-force balance is
I space requirements
The unit should be placed horizontally on a table or shelf. To allow the dust cover to open completely, 18"
-
46 cm should be provided above the unit as shown in this sketch.
Connection to Amplifier
The cable fitted with RCA plugs should be run to the
PHONO input of a high-fidelity stereo amplifier or receiver, L for left and R for right channel.
The separate black wire should be connected to the ground screw on the amplifier.
MAINTENANCE
The external surfaces of your
Beogram 4002 can be kept clean with a dry cloth. Any grease marks on the metal surfaces can be removed with a soft cloth moistened in a lukewarm solution of deter- gent in water, followed by thorough wiping with a dry cloth.
Take care n o t t o damage the stylus! Put the protective clear plastic hood on the cartridge before wiping the metal surfaces of you Beo- gram 4002.
Dust Cover
Repeated wiping with a dry cloth will cause the dust co- ver to eventually pick up a static charge.
We therefore suggest that you occasionally use deter- gent when wiping the dust cover.
Do not use alcohol as i t may attack the material.
Teak and Rosewood
If the wood surfaces seem grey and dry you may apply a thin film of teak or rosewood oil, though not more than once or twice a year. Use a thin grade oil, especially for rosewood.
Blond Oak
Do not use oil under any cir- cumstances-even non-oil detergent or wax can cause discoloration of the untreated surface.
The removal of dark spots should be left to an expert.
