Laaté Olukotun creating products, services, and systems Master of Design Candidate Institute of Design Illinois Institute of Technology [email protected] 773.577.0011 Version 3.1 | February 23, 2006 Product Designer I am a product designer. I can’t help but see solutions to problems big and small. I am driven by my interests and by my passions. Through empathy, I am able to understand user needs. Through rigorous training, I am able to visualize future products. The methods taught at the Institute of Design have given me a disciplined means of consistently developing new product concepts. From user observation and human factors to design analysis and synthesis, I have studied and applied the methods necessary to develop innovative products. Garmin Bike-Mounted GPS Unit 4-5 Scarab Extreme Sports Craft 6-7 Medical Supply Delivery System 8-9 Our five-person team developed a design brief detailing Garmin’s opportunity to build a GPS device for bicyclists. A year later, Garmin seemed to follow our advice, producing a bike GPS device. In Fall 2005, I decided to develop a human-powered craft. Behavioral prototyping and constant form and mechanism refinements resulted in the Scarab off-road skeleton boogie board. Our three-person team developed a multi-modal system for delivering hospital supplies. We designed a working prototype with interactive controls using programming and circuit design. Play Experiences for Mattel My concept for a simple interactive toy was chosen as a finalist for the 2005 Mattel Design Summit where it won the “Best Experimental Experience” award. Digital Camera Improvements Our six-person team first uncovered the major usability issues facing the Nikon Coolpix 5000 digital camera then developed a number of solutions. We also explored tangible user interfaces. 10 11 - 12 Design Planner I am a design planner. I can’t help but think beyond the single product. There are problems that cannot be solved by creating a new device or craft. Some issues are too complex, some systems are too large. Design planning methods help to ensure that the correct problem is being solved by the right innovation. Mayo Clinic’s Plummer Project 13 MSI SmartVisit 14 Developing the next services and systems requires a disciplined approach. Through the careful application of design methods it is possible to proactively develop concepts that, when implemented, yield considerable benefits for organizations. CTA Bus Notification System 15 Hive News Retrieval System 16 Using ID methods our three-person, interdisciplinary team conceptualized then prototyped 23 system-wide concepts that are now being piloted, tested and implemented in Mayo Clinic’s Department of Medicine. Our four-person team created a series of systems for the Museum of Science and Industry that collectively define a smarter visit. This semester, I am developing one of the products, an avatar-based guide system. Our two-person team developed a better customer experience for commuters who depend on the Chicago Transit Authority bus system. Our system notifies users of arrivals and delays. Asked to explore “news media” as a general topic, our five-person team developed a robust news retrieval, filter, sharing, and storage system to be powered by Google. bicycle GPS unit Assigned the task of creating a new product line, our team chose to develop a concept for Garmin, the market leader in Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. By first understanding the industry, our client, and user needs, we were able to design a product with real business potential - a GPS unit for bicyclists. Course: New Product Definition, Institute of Design Team: Jaime Chen Henning Fischer Ah Young Hahn Laate Olukotun Jose Sia Advisor: Chris Conley Date: Fall 2004 Concept Development New Product Definition We developed a new product definition document for Garmin detailing the potential of our device. The definition “encapsulates the results of the definition process with the goal of communicating the product or service that needs to be developed.” The document is a tool for taking a defined product from its earliest concept phase to final launch. It is meant to be a working document capable of changing and adjusting over time. The document has multiple editors and is accessible by different members throughout the organization. >À >ÀÊÃÊÌ iÊi>`iÀÊÊL>Ê*ÃÌ}Ê -ÞÃÌiÊ*-®ÊÌiV }ÞÊ>`ÊÃiÀÛiÃÊLÌ Ê Ì iÊ>Û>ÌÊ>`ÊVÃÕiÀÊ>ÀiÌðÊ/ iÀÊ «À`ÕVÌÃÊ>ÀiÊÕÃi`ÊÊyÞ}]ÊL>Ì}]Ê`ÀÛ}]Ê }]Ê>`Ê>ÞÊÌ iÀÊ>VÌÛÌið "««ÀÌÕÌià UÊ ÕÃiÊi}iiÀ}Ê>`ÊÃ>iÃÊ ÊÊ>ÀiÌ} UÊiÝÃÌ}Êwi`ÊÌiÃÌ}Ê UÊwÀÃÌÊÌÊ>ÀiÌÊ«ÀÌÌÞ«ià UÊVÃÕiÀÊ>ÀiÌÉÊiiVÌÀVà UÊÃV>Ê>VÌÛÌiÃÊ°i°Ê}>iÃ]Ê}i ÊÊV>V }]ÊvÀi`ÃÌiÀiÊV>ÌÀÃ]Ê ÊÊ«ÕLVÊÌÀ>ÃÌÊv® UÊ Õ>Êv>VÌÀÃÊivÌÉÊÀ} ÌÊ >`i` >À½ÃÊL}}iÃÌÊvÀÕÃÌÀ>ÌÊ >ÃÊLiiÊÊ Ü}Ê>ÕÌÊ>iÀðÊÌÊ`>ÌiÃÊÌ iÊf£ÇäÊ Ê}L>ÊLÕÃiÃÃÊvÀÊ>vÌiÀ>ÀiÌÊ*-Ê ÀiViÛiÀÃ°Ê ÕÌÊ>ÕÌÊ>iÀÃÊ>ÀiÊLÕ`}Ê ÀiViÛiÀÃÊÌÊ`>à L>À`Ã]Ê>`ÊÜÊëi`Ê fxÊLÊÌ ÃÊÞi>ÀÊ`}ÊÌ]Ê>VVÀ`}ÊÌÊiÊ iÃÌ>ÌiÊLÞÊ>ÀiÌÊÀiÃi>ÀV iÀÊ ]ÊiÊvÊ Ì]ÊÃÊv>À]ÊÜÌ Ê>À° >i}ià UÊÃÕÃÌ>i`Ê}ÀÜÌ UÊvi>ÌÕÀiÉÊ«ÀViÊL>>Vi\Ê61 UÊÀ>ÃiÊ>Ü>ÀiiÃÃÊvÊ*UÊÌi}À>ÌÊvÊÌ iÀÊÌiV }ià UÊÃÕ««iÀÊ`i«i`iVÞ UÊV«iÌÌÛiÊÌiV }ià UÊ«ÀÛ>VÞÊÃÃÕià Êx{ÎÊ*À`ÕVÌÊ iwÌ >ÊÓää{ >iÊ i i}ÊÃV iÀ Ê9Õ}Ê> >>ÌiÊ"ÕÌÕ ÃiÊ-> «>ÞÊ-ÌÀ>Ìi}Þ ºÊÌ iÊVÃÕiÀÊÃi}iÌ]Ê i} Ìii`Ê >Ü>ÀiiÃÃÊvÊ*-Ê>`ÊÌ iÊVÀi>Ã}Ê ««Õ>ÀÌÞÊvÊLiÊ`iÛViÃÊÃÕV Ê>ÃÊ * ÃÊ>ÜÃÊvÀÊÌ iÊVÛiÀ}iViÊvÊÕÀÊ *-Ê>Û}>ÌÊV>«>LÌiÃÊÜÌ ÊÌ iÀÊ ÌiV }iÃ°Ê Ý>«iÃÊvÊÌ ÃÊÌi}À>ÌÊ VÕ`iÊÌ iÊ+ÕiÊÎÈää]ÊÜ V ÊVLiÃÊ >Ê*>Ê"-L>Ãi`Ê* ÊÜÌ Ê*-Ê>`ÊÌ iÊ ,Á]ÊÜ V ÊiÀ}iÃÊ>Ê>ÞÊ,>`Ê -iÀÛViÊ,-®ÊÓÜ>ÞÊÀ>`ÊÜÌ Ê*-°Ê/ iÃiÊ >`ÊÌ iÀÊ«À`ÕVÌÊiÃÊÜÊLiÊiÝ«>`i`ÊÌÊ vviÀÊÀiÊ>`Û>Vi`Êvi>ÌÕÀiÊÃiÌð»ÊÃÕÀVi\Ê ÓääÎÊÕ>Ê,i«ÀÌ® ÃÃÕià UÊÌÌiÊ`vviÀiÌ>ÌÊÜÌ Êià UÊ«iÀVi«ÌÊvʺÕÌ`ÀÃÉÊëÀÌÃ»Ê ÊÊ«À`ÕVÌ UÊÃÕLÃÌÌÕÌiÃÊvÀÊÜ>Þw`}\ÊÊ ÊÊÞ> ]Ê /]ÊLiÃ]Ê>«ÃÊ>`Ê ÊÊÌ iÀÊ«i«i UÊL>ÌÌiÀÞÊvi UÊ«ÀViÃÃÀÉÊiiÀÞ UÊ>VVÕÀ>VÞ UÊV`Ìâ>Ì >iÊ ÕÃÌiÀÊ-i}iÌà The definition includes: 1. prototyping and testing, the concept began as an idea for a recumbent craft but evolved into a much stronger design for a face-first vehicle for thrill seekers. The craft is a new, highly responsive, gravity-powered extreme sports craft. Project: Braun Design Competition 2005 Course: Product Workshop, Institute of Design Team: Individual Advisor: Chris Conley Date: Fall 2004 Concept Details A New Idea Scarab is an off-road tricycle placing riders in a face-first, reclining position. Riders change direction primarily by shifting their leg positions – kicking a leg out to the left turns the craft left. Due to the rider’s unique face-first position, specfic attention was given to the shape of the board. The other components and elements of the board directly reference or relate to the board in terms of position, shape, and size. Finally, the craft was designed to resemble its namesake, the scarab (or scarabee) beetle of Egyptian folklore. The craft hugs the ground, and the rider holds on for dear life on this fast ride. scarab extreme sports craft Laate Olukotun | Product Designer Medical Supply System multi-modal delivery & self-checkout devices Our team developed a working interactive prototype designed to support medical supply delivery at Rush University Medical Center.
