WIRING INSTALLATION
DO NOT CONNECT THE POWER CORD TO THE PROMEDIA ULTRA 5.1 UNTILALL
CONNECTIONS HAVE BEEN MADE AND ARE CORRECT. TURN OFF THE POWER TO
YOUR COMPUTER, OR ANY OTHER DEVICE, BEFORE MAKING THE CONNECTIONS.
Please refer to the quick connection guide included in this manual or the color setup
guide included in the box before wiring .
Some computers are set up with a two-channel soundcard. If your soundcard has
only one stereo output jack, it is a two-channel soundcard. The ProMedia Ultra 5.1 is
optimized for connection to and use with a 5.1 channel soundcard, or any audio
device with discrete channel outputs in a 5.1 configuration.
The ProMedia Ultra 5.1 has five speakers and a subwoofer. It can be adapted to
deliver two channels, four channels or six channels of audio, depending upon
hookup. There is no harm if the rear left and right (L/R) and center/sub channels are
not fully utilized (not plugged into), as in the case of two-channel play. If the device
you are hooking up has RCA jacks, a mini-plug adapter will be necessary and is
readily available at a local Radio Shack® store or any stereo, appliance or computer
retail outlet.
SPEAKER PLACEMENT
1. Two of the satellite speakers should be symmetrically positioned on each side of
your computer video monitor to balance the sound in the front "soundstage." All
satellite speakers are magnetically shielded, and should not cause interference
with the computer monitor.
2. The center channel should be placed on top of the monitor or television, utilizing
the adjustable rear post to optimize the angle for the listening position.
3. Position the remaining two surround channel satellite speakers symmetrically and
behind the listening position. The satellites may be placed on a bookshelf, desk or
table. If rear positioning is impossible, place the speakers as far back, to the left
and right, as possible. Avoid putting the speakers on the floor as this impairs the
rear sound field and doesn’t provide a seamless sense of surround ambience. If
no other rear placement option is available, the pedestal stands may be removed
by unscrewing the threaded bolt to allow the rear speakers to be wall mounted.
This 1/4" 20-thread bolt pattern was chosen to accommodate a wide variety of wall
brackets available at stereo and appliance stores nationwide. (Klipsch WB-1 wall
brackets are available for purchase at www.klipsch.com.)
4, Locate the subwoofer either directly under your computer desk, or close to the
front satellite speakers, allowing access to the AC outlet and soundcard
connections. The subwoofer's proximity to a wall or the floor will greatly enhance
the low frequency content of the system. It is important not to cover up the side
speakers or front vent port of the enclosure. Also, be sure to provide enough
ventilation to the rear of the subwoofer, as the amplifier resides inside its
enclosure. The subwoofer should be no closer than 10" to the computer monitor to
avoid interference.
5. Position the speakers with safe routing of the interconnection cables in mind.
Speaker or power cables, which might be run across an area of foot traffic, should
be positioned against a wall or corner and taped down. Special "cable troughs”
are available from stereo, appliance and computer stores to assist in covering
cables, which may fall underfoot or across walkways. The front and center
speaker interconnects are four meters in length. The rear speaker interconnects
are six meters in length.
SIGNAL CONNECTION
FIVE-CHANNEL DISCRETE CHANNEL CONNECTION (5.1 SOUNDCARD)
1. The stereo mini-plug cables send the proper front, center, subwoofer and rear
(surround) signals to the amplifier housed in the subwoofer. Plug the cables into
the jacks marked "INPUTS" on the ProMedia Ultra 5.1's subwoofer panel. Use
the GREEN plug in the "FRONT L/R" jack, the BLACK plug in the "REAR L/R"
jack and the ORANGE plug in the "CENTER/SUB" jack. Route the other end of
these cables into the 2-, 4-, or 5.1-channel soundcard output jacks on the rear of
your PC. Connect the GREEN plug to soundcard output number one for the front
signals, the BLACK plug to output number two for the rear (surround) channels,
and the ORANGE plug for center and subwoofer signals. This will ensure that all
channel signals are positioned and routed properly.
NOTE: If you have a two-channel soundcard, do not connect the BLACK or
ORANGE signal cables to the amplifier panel. If you are using a four-channel
soundcard, do not connect the ORANGE signal cable to the amplifier panel.
Since the unused channels will not amplify any signals, you don’t need to
connect the center speaker, or for a two-channel soundcard, the rear speakers.
. Connect the control module cable, which has the round DIN multi-pin plug, into
the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 subwoofer panel connector marked "VOLUME
CONTROL." Ensure that the flat side of the plug is facing up.
. One of the six amplifier channels powers the subwoofer itself, while the other five
amplifier sections feed the satellite and center speakers through their own
speaker cables. From the subwoofer amplifier panel, connect the five satellite
interconnects (including the center channel) to each of the five speakers. The
front and center satellite speaker interconnects are four meters long, and the rear
satellite speaker interconnects are six meters long. The wire ends attach to the
amplifier and satellite speakers to allow for speaker wire upgrades if desired. Be
sure to observe the polarity (+/-) settings at each tinned wire end for connection.
To ensure proper bass response and aural imaging, it is VERY IMPORTANT that
all of the positive terminals are connected in proper polarity. In other words, avoid
having the positive (+) bare lead from a satellite speaker connected to the
negative (-) terminal on the subwoofer enclosure. Route the speaker cables
safely, to avoid a tripping danger.

SPEAKER CONNECTION
1. Connect mini plugs into PC soundcard from the subwoofer amplifier rear panel.
. Connect DIN plug to the subwoofer from the control module.
. Connect four satellites and center channel by inserting the tinned wire leads into the
speaker cabinet terminals and the subwoofer panel, making sure only the bare wire
leads are connected. Connect black wire to black terminals, (-) black with white
dashes to red terminals (+).
. Connect the AC power cable to the AC power receptacle on the subwoofer amplifier
panel. Do not plug in the AC power until your computer audio system is set up.
Once system is properly set up and plugged in, start up the computer, then press
the Control module power switch to turn the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 system on.
. Plug headphone mini stereo plug in headphone jack, if desired.
. Plug stereo mini plug into MP3/Aux jack, if desired. Plug stereo mini plug into MP3
player (as an example).
. Optional SWS Link. On the back of the subwoofer is a jack labeled “SWS Link,”
a special port for attachment of one or more Klipsch ProMedia SWS powered
subwoofers. This port enables full integration of SWS subwoofers into the Ultra
system. Although the Ultra 5.1 provides good bass output on its own, one or more
SWS subwoofers will add both depth and power to your system's bottom end.
The Klipsch ProMedia SWS subwoofer system is available for purchase at
www.klipsch.com.

VOLUME CONTROL PROGRAMS
Some soundcard and/or PC manufacturers may have software that must be adjusted
separately from the Windows volume control. Consult applicable manual for specific
hardware documentation.
FRONT/CENTER/SURROUND BALANCE
Using a pre-recorded 5.1 channel voice/test signal provided with a 5.1 channel card,
advance the Control Module Main Volume knob to the indication "50" to initiate level
balancing. Adjust the Center and Surround level until the voice appears equally loud in
the front, center and rear channels.
SUBWOOFER LEVEL
For CD or DVD output, the optimal sub level is referenced at the factory to the "0"
level position. Optimal sub levels and user preference may vary from movies, music
and games. Often a high bass level is preferred, especially at low listening levels.
Remember to reset the control settings before playing CDs or films on DVD.
N
CONTROL MODULE FEATURES
MAIN POWER SWITCH / HEADPHONE MODE
The power switch is located on the front left side of the Control Module. Depress and
hold for a few seconds to power on and off the system. This switch also acts to
engage the headphones. Momentarily pressing the switch engages the headphones
and removes power from the main speakers to save energy. While engaging the
headphones, "HP" is indicated in the digital readout. In headphone mode, only the
preamplifier and headphone amplifier are powered, giving the lowest possible noise
floor. To return to speaker mode, momentarily press the power switch.
40) MAIN VOLUME CONTROL
The large main volume knob adjusts overall system volume. The digital volume
display reads from "1 to 80" which corresponds to actual decibel increments. If this
knob is turned slowly, the volume steps will be in 1dB increments.
(04) ADJUSTING CENTER, REAR AND SUBWOOFER LEVELS
Pressing each of the center, rear and sub adjustment buttons will automatically
change the main readout to display the current level and will remain for
approximately three seconds on the digital display. The adjustment range is from
-9dB to +15dB, with default settings of "0". Using the main knob will change the
level setting.
Note: Possible gain range settings for each channel are -9dB to +15dB and will be
retained as the main volume approaches 80. However, new settings made at high
volumes will only be allowed as the total reaches 80. In other words, if the main
volume reads 75, the boost will be limited to +5dB, and if main volume is set to 80
(maximum), no boost is available.
or HEADPHONE OUTPUT
The ‘/e" stereo headphone output jack, located on front of the control tower, is
designed for personal listening with all quality headphones. The main volume control
adjusts the headphone output while the speakers are muted. The HP volume level
remains independently adjustable from the speaker volume settings.
de PORTABLE MUSIC PLAYER INPUT
This convenient stereo input will accommodate a wide variety of audio sources
without interrupting the computer setup. This also allows blending the auxiliary input
signal with the (Main) soundcard signal source. MP3 portable audio players, gaming
consoles, or any other source with a stereo mini-plug output are easily integrated into
the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 playback system. This input jack engages +10dB input
sensitivity to help compensate for the lower output voltage of most portable players.
To obtain the proper balance with the main signal, the level adjustments in the
computer software and in the portable player will need to be adjusted. An example
would be listening to an MP3 music player while surfing the net and blending in
associated sounds from the Internet or game software. The benefits of this mixed
sound may not always be desired, and the system owner will ultimately determine
the use of this flexibility feature.
NOTE: The main volume and subwoofer level controls will affect this input source,
while center and rear levels will not. The stereo source will only come through the
front channels, since this is a two-channel signal source.
NOTE: During playback of MP3 files, overall sound quality may be perceptibly
degraded (noise/distortion) compared to other audio sources such as CD. This is
caused by the encoding method and quality of the MP3 file or the portable player
itself. It is recommended that MP3 files be encoded at a minimum 128-bit rate.
