Proceq Pundit Lab, + Ultrasonic Instrument Operating Instructions

The Pundit Lab and Pundit Lab+ are ultrasonic instruments used for measuring pulse velocity, path length, uniformity, surface velocity, crack depth, and estimating dynamic elastic modulus of samples. The Pundit Lab+ can also be used for estimating compressive strength using pulse velocity alone or in combination with a rebound hammer. These instruments are ideal for testing concrete, rock, and other materials.

Frequently asked questions

To zero the Pundit Lab, you need to use the calibration rod. Apply couplant to the transducers and both ends of the rod, and press them firmly together. Select 'System Settings' and check that the Tx/Rx frequency matches the transducer frequency. Ensure the pulse width is set correctly and the correction factor is set to 1.0. Select 'Calibration' and enter the transit time as marked on the calibration rod. Press 'Start' to begin the calibration sequence.

The choice of transducer frequency depends on the aggregate size of the concrete. Generally, lower frequencies allow more depth of penetration, while higher frequencies allow better resolution in the measurements. Refer to the table in the manual for recommended frequency based on aggregate size.

To measure pulse velocity, you need to know the path length between the transducers. Select 'Basic Measurements' and set the parameter setting to 'Path Length'. Enter the path length, start the measurement, and the instrument will display the transmission time and the measured pulse velocity.

Before measuring compressive strength, you need to create a conversion curve in PunditLink and upload it to the Pundit Lab+. Carry out a pulse velocity measurement as described in the manual, and then click on the up or down keys to switch between pulse velocity and compressive strength indication.

The SONREB method is a combination of ultrasonic and rebound hammer measurements for estimating compressive strength. Enter the rebound value into the settings menu before carrying out the measurement. The rebound value will be saved along with the rest of the measurement data.

You can view the waveform on the instrument, on a PC using PunditLink, or on an oscilloscope connected to the instrument.
