Introduction to Mellanox MetroX™Long Haul Systems Rev 1.1
1 Introduction to Mellanox MetroX™Long Haul Systems
1.1
Overview
Mellanox MetroX series extends Mellanox’s RDMA solutions for high-performance technology to local, campus and metro applications. It enables data sharing and support for disaster recovery,
40Gb/s RDMA execution over distant sites - up to 80km using WDM long-haul transceivers.
While InfiniBand products have been traditionally deployed for their high-performance interconnect benefits within the data center, Mellanox MetroX systems, implementing long-haul Infini-
Band, enable connecting between data centers deployed across multiple geographically distributed sites, extending the same world-leading interconnect benefits of InfiniBand beyond local data centers and storage clusters.
Mellanox’s MetroX is the perfect cost-effective, low power, easily managed and scalable solution that enables today’s data centers and storage to run over local and distributed InfiniBand fabrics, managed as a single unified network infrastructure. The TX6240 and TX6280 systems, which implement long-haul InfiniBand, can transfer data up to distances of 40km and 80km, respectively. The systems enable aggregate data and storage networking over a single, consolidated InfiniBand fabric. The long-haul InfiniBand technology guarantees high-performance, high-volume data sharing between distant sites, enabling existing data centers’ expansion, disaster recovery, data mirroring and campus connectivity.
MetroX enables a campus network to assemble large aggregate clusters, all connected and easily managed by an InfiniBand Subnet Manager - an embedded manager, OpenSM, or using Mellanox’s Unified Fabric Manager (UFM®).

Installation
Planning the system’s placement in the rack
Before mounting the system to the rack, select the way you wish to place the system. Pay attention to the airflow within the rack cooling, connector and cabling options.
While planning how to place the system, review the following points:
• Make sure the system air flow is compatible with your installation selection. It is important to keep the airflow within the rack in the same direction.
• In case there are cables that cannot bend within the rack or in case more space is needed for cable bending radius, it is possible to recess the connector side or the FRU side by
2” (5.08cm) by optional placement of the system’s rails.
• The FRU side is extractable. Mounting the sliding rail inverted to the system will allow you to slide the FRU side of the system, in and out.
Mounting the slides to the system
Step 1.
Step 2.
The recession feature is bi-directional, meaning that you can recess the system either backward or forward.
Screw the system slides onto the system. Use 5 flat head 6-32 screws for a short system and 7 screws for a standard depth system to connect each system slide. The recommended tightening torque is 1.5±0.2 Nm.
Figure 5: Screwing on the Rail
5 screws per side are needed for the short system.
7 screws per side are needed for the standard system.
If using a torque screwdriver to tighten the screws, set it to 1.5±0.2 Nm.

Grounding
2.5.1
TX6240/TX6280 Grounding
Check to determine if your local or national electrical codes require an external ground to all IT components. If so, connect a ground wire to one of the casing screws and connect the other end to a valid ground. If you choose to not use the ground screw, make sure that the rack is properly grounded and that there is a valid ground connection between the chassis of the system, and the rack. Test the ground using an Ohm meter.
Installation
Some national and/or local codes may require IT components to be bonded and externally grounded (not including the power cord ground). You must follow all national and local codes when installing this equipment.
2.5.2
MEX6200 Grounding
For your protection and to prevent possible damage to equipment when a fault condition occurs on the cables connected to the equipment (for example, a lightning stroke or contact with high voltage power lines), the case of the MEX6200 unit must be properly grounded at all times. Any interruption of the protective (grounding) connection inside or outside the equipment, or the disconnection of the protective ground terminal, can make this equipment dangerous. Intentional interruption is prohibited.
When an MEX6200 unit is installed in a rack, make sure that the rack is properly grounded and connected to a reliable, low resistance grounding system.
Before connecting any cables, the protective ground terminal of the MEX6200 must be connected to a protective ground (see Connection Data.
The grounding must also be made through the AC power cable, which should be inserted in a power socket (outlet) with protective ground contact. Therefore, the power cable plug must always be inserted in a socket outlet provided with a protective ground contact, and the protective action must not be negated by use of an extension cord (power cable) without a protective conductor (grounding).
Any interruption of the protective (grounding) conductor (inside or outside the device) or disconnecting the protective earth terminal can make the device dangerous.
The MEX6200 protective ground terminals must be connected to protective ground before power is applied and before connecting any other cable. This connection is made through the AC power cable.
The power cord plug should only be inserted in an outlet provided with a protective ground (earth) contact. The protective action must not be negated by using an extension cord (power cable) without a protective conductor (grounding).
26 Mellanox Technologies
Installation
Dangerous voltages may be present on the cables connected to the MEX6200:
• Never connect cables to an MEX6200 unit if it is not properly installed and grounded. This means that its power cable must be inserted in an outlet provided with a protective ground
(earth) contact before connecting any user or network cable to the MEX6200
• Disconnect all the cables connected to the connectors of the MEX6200 before disconnecting the unit’s power cable.
• In Finland, Norway and Sweden, CLASS I PLUGGABLE EQUIPMENT TYPE A must have the following marking text to state that the equipment must be permanently connected to an earthed mains socket-outlet:
• In Finland: "Laite on liitettävä suojakoskettimilla varustettuun pistorasiaan"
• In Norway: "Apparatet må tilkoples jordet stikkontakt"
• In Sweden: "Apparaten skall anslutas till jordat uttag"
The protective ground terminal of the WDM unit, located on the rack mount, must be connected to a protective ground.
Figure 16: Grounding the MEX6200
Rev 1.1
2.6
Connecting the TX6240/TX6280 System to the MEX6200 Unit
To Connect the MEX6200 to the TX6240 or TX6280, perform the next steps:
Step 1.
Connect the provided Ethernet cable to the mgmt1 interface of the system on one end and the
ETH port of the MEX6200 on the other.
Step 2.
Step 3.
Step 4.
Insert the DWDM C-Band optical modules into their appropriate ports, beginning with Ch #28 to Port 1, Ch #29 to Port 3, etc.
Connect the ribbon cable from the MEX6200 MUX and DEMUX ports to the uplink data ports.
Make sure to connect LC1 to Port 1, LC2 to Port 3, etc. See Figure 17.
Clip the loose fibers of the ribbon cable.
Step 5.
Step 6.
Insert the SFP+ SR modules into the downlink ports of the WDM (2, 4, etc.)
Insert the QSFP SR4L modules into the system’s EXT ports.
Step 7.
Connect the fiber cable connector to the EXT ports on one end and to the downlink ports of the
WDM (LC1 to Port 2, LC2 to Port 4, etc).
Mellanox Technologies 27
Rev 1.1
Installation
Step 8.
Connect the MEX6200 unit to a second MEX6200 unit through the COM1 port, using an LR single-mode fiber cable, as illustrated in
Figure 19.
The MEX6200 does not have a power ON/OFF system, and therefore it starts operating as soon as power is applied. To control the connection of power to the MEX6200 it is recommended to use an external power ON/OFF system that disconnects all poles simultaneously. For example, the circuit breaker used to protect the supply line to the MEX6200 may also serve as the ON/OFF system. This type of circuit breaker should be rated 10A.
Power should be supplied to the MEX6200 through a power cable terminated in an appropriate plug, in accordance with the required power source.

The system can operate indefinitely with less than a full compliment of fans in the fan modules, so long as the ambient temperature is below 45° Celsius.
Rev 1.1
Operation without a fan unit should not exceed two minutes.
During fan hot-swap, if the LED indicator is OFF, the fan unit is disconnected.
Make sure that the fans have the air flow that matches the model number. An air flow opposite to the system design will cause the system to operate at a higher (less than optimal) temperature.
For power supply unit air flow direction, refer to Section 2.2 on page 15
To extract a fan unit:
Step 1.
Step 2.
For a fan unit composed of two fans: using two fingers, push both latch releases towards each other simultaneously while pulling the fan module out of the system. As the fan unseats, the
Fan Status LED will turn off.
For a single fan unit: grasping the handle with your right hand, push the latch release with your thumb while pulling the handle outward. As the fan unit unseats, the fan unit status LEDs will turn off.

3.2.2.3 MNG Ports and Connectors
The MEX6200 is equipped with two SFP based MNG ports labeled "MNG 1" and "MNG 2".
These ports enable remote management of a MEX6200 unit or local cascading in a multi-chassis application.
48 Mellanox Technologies
Interfaces
This management channel may be multiplexed as an extra OSC wavelength by the optical MUX/
DEMUX. The MEX6200 supports two OSCs for multi-chassis application and for remote management with facility protection. The facility protection is for the management network when the two management ports are active and there is more than one management route between the nodes. In point-to-point topology without protection, only one OSC port is needed on each side
(it can be either of the two). For a protected point-to-point or ring topology, both OSC ports should be used.
The MEX6200 uses the standard Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) to uniquely determine the route for the management traffic between the nodes, and to dynamically change the management route should a facility failure occur.
The MNG ports accept optical or copper (electrical) SFP modules.

Facility Protection for MEX6200
In protected configuration, the MEX6200 supports unidirectional, non-revertive, 1+1 facility protection.
• Unidirectional: Each side selects the Active line independently.
• Non-revertive: To reduce the number of traffic hits, no switching occurs if the traffic is restored on the Standby line while there are no faults on the Active line.
• 1+1 facility: The transmitted traffic is copied to both fibers.
• The MEX6200 provides two types of facility protection:
• Transponder protection: Protects the optical fiber and transponder uplink transceiver.
• Fiber protection: Protects the optical fiber.
3.2.3.1 Transponder Protection
The transponder protection ensures service continuity in case of a fiber break or a failure of an uplink transceiver.
The transponder protection is usually provided by the MEX6200 with two MUX/DEMUX modules. See the following figure.

Fiber Protection
When an Optical Switch module is installed, its input is connected to the output of the MUX/
DEMUX module, and its two outputs are connected internally to two COM* ports.
The Optical Switch performs APS based on the received optical power level of the incoming aggregated optical signal. Therefore, the Optical Switch can be used to protect against cable break, but not against uplink transceiver failure.
The facility protection ensures service continuity in case of a fiber break. The fiber protection based on the Optical Switch module is supported only for point-to-point topologies.
The following figure shows an Optical Switch Protection application.
Figure 32: Fiber Protection with Optical Switch
Rev 1.1
When an Optical Switch is installed, the COM1 and COM2* buttons are shown and enabled in the Web application. In this case, the protection is done on the entire optical signal, which includes all channels.
The following figure shows the front panel of the MEX6200 as displayed in the Web application.

Appendix B: Thermal Threshold Definitions
There are three thermal threshold definitions for the SwitchX® switch device which impact the overall switch system operation state: Warning, Critical and Emergency.
1.Warning – 105C
On managed systems only: When the SwitchX® device crosses the 100C threshold, a Warning
Threshold message will be issued by the MLNX-OS management SW, indicating to system administration that the switch has crossed the Warning threshold.
Note that this temperature threshold does not require nor lead to any action by hardware (such as switch shutdown).
2.Critical – 120C
When the SwitchX® device crosses this temperature, the firmware will automatically shut down the device.
3.Emergency – 130C
In case the firmware fails to shut down the SwitchX® device upon crossing the Critical threshold, the SwitchX® device will auto-shutdown upon crossing the Emergency (130C) threshold.
