HISTORY

The EMI / Abbey Road Studios TG12428 amplifier was first conceived in the late 1960s as the workhorse amplifier for EMI’s next generation recording and mastering consoles, the transistor based

TG series.

TG desks were developed to handle Abbey Road

Studios’ growing session requirements, and desire for more stability over their vacuum tubebased predecessors, EMI’s REDD class of consoles.

Thank you for purchasing the Chandler Limited

TG2-500 Pre Amp, you now own a piece of EMI /

Abbey Road Studios official equipment.

EMI and Abbey Road Studios officially launched the TG series of consoles with the TG MK I in

1969.

The Chandler Limited TG2-500 Pre Amp is a recreation of the rare EMI TG12428 pre amp used in

EMI/Abbey Road Studios recording and mastering consoles from the late 60s and early 70s.

The TG2-500 Pre Amp features the same discrete, transformer-balanced amplifiers as Chandler Limited’s TG series rack-mount counterparts.

The TG-500 Pre Amp uses a 100% discrete transistor circuit and specially wound transformers.

TG consoles would reliably serve Abbey Road

Studios from 1969 to 1981. During its reign, TG desks would see many revisions, ending with the final recording console produced by EMI, the iconic wrap-around TG MK IV.

The TG series of consoles and their discrete solidstate amplifiers left their pleasing and now legendary sonic imprint on many records, including the Beatles’ final album ‘Abbey Road’, and Pink

Floyd’s ‘Dark side of the Moon’.

Your Chandler Limited TG2-500 Pre Amp has been carefully crafted and built by hand at Chandler

Limited in Shell Rock IA, U.S.A, using throughhole components for the ultimate analog experience.

OUTPUT

The ‘OUTPUT’ control acts as fader would on mixing console.

Use this to control the overall output level of the pre-amplifier to your recording device or DAW. When setting input gain levels, start with the ‘OUTPUT’ control set fully clockwise for unity level, adjust back as needed so as not to clip your converters, or DAW.

TIP: If you want to overdrive the pre-amp for wonderful crunchy tone, set the ‘OUPUT’ control lower, crank the ‘COARSE GAIN’, and use the ‘FINE GAIN’ to achieve just the right color.

48V

Some microphones require phantom power. Depress this switch to enable 48 volts phantom power; use only for microphones that require it.

WARNING: Only engage or disengage phantom power with the microphone already connected to the pre-amplifier. Disconnecting a microphone while phantom power is on may cause damage to equipment downstream. Never use phantom power with ribbon microphones.

PHASE

When depressed, the ‘PHASE’ button allows you to phase reverse the input signal 180º. This feature may be useful when a microphone is not ideally placed, a cable is wired incorrectly, or line level source material is out of phase.

CONNECTIVITY

Connections - All connections on the TG2-500 Pre Amp are transformer balanced, pin 2 hot.

POWER

Current draw - Here are the current draw specifications for the TG2-500 Pre Amp when the unit is loaded 600 ohm and operating at a continuous level of unity gain. Please consult your rack and PSU specifications to make sure you are not overloading your system.

+16 volt power rail = +95ma

-16 volt power rail = -70ma

ENCLOSURE COMPATIBILTY

The TG2-500 Pre Amp has no known issues with any 500-series racks.

POWER SUPPLY RECOMMENDATIONS

We recommend using a rack with an external power supply such as the API 500v rack with external

L200 supply and the BAE 11-slot with external supply.

NOTES on BAE racks

We recommend adding a wire from Earth to power supply common on all BAE racks. In many cases hum can be avoided and Earth to common is standard procedure on most electronic equipment.
