TO SNELL 2015

SA 2015 RATED

Snell SA rating is the most widely accepted standard for racing helmet safety in the world. The Snell standard is updated once every five years, generally improving helmet protection each time. Effective October 1, 2015, helmet manufacturers will be allowed to sell Snell 2015 rated helmets, meeting Snell’s latest and most stringent safety standards. The helmets will be clearly marked with the Snell 2015 safety label.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SA2015 STANDARD VERSUS THE SA2010 STANDARD IS EXPLAINED HERE.

• SA2015 helmets must be equipped with FIA 8858-2010 compliant M6 terminal mounts for head restraints. Head restraints such as the widely used HANS and Hybrid styles have been credited as being the number one lifesaving advance in personal racing safety equipment of the last 20 years.

• SA2015 includes provisions for Low Velocity impact testing. For the racer, this test ensures performance in low velocity crashes.

• A single helmet will be tested in five separate sites on a flat anvil on or above the helmet’s test line. No impact may exceed 200G and the average of the five peaks must not exceed 180G.

• SA2015 includes Low Lateral impacts at the intersection of the head form reference and transverse planes. This is the key area around the ear and temple.

• The peak G criteria for helmets tested on head forms of less than 60 cm circumference (ISO A-J) has been raised to 300 G and the velocity of the first impact has been increased to 8.5 m/sec. Second impact velocities have been reduced.

• The peak G criterion for the ISO M head form remains at 264 G but the first impact velocity has been increased to 8.0 m/sec. The second impact velocity has been reduced.

• SA2015 certification will require two more helmet samples than SA2010 demanded. One of these is for the FHR testing and the other for the additional impact tests.

Generally racers wear what is required by their sanctioning bodies. Each sanctioning body establishes which standards it will accept and how old the rating can be. Be sure to keep up with your sanctioning body and local track requirements.

Brian B just called and said he wanted to thank us for making very good product.

He was in a crash this weekend in Joliet and hit the wall at 200 miles per hour and then spun around and came to a sudden stop when he hit the other wall backwards. He wears our Helmet, shoes, gloves and restraints.

My name is Justin R. Last weekend during one of the nights events I had an unfortunate rollover from which I walked away from without injury. Last Wednesday April 22, I ordered a new helmet for my 11 year old who races quarter midgets. Jessica was very helpful. She knew her products. She knew the inventory. Very pleasant. We agreed on the helmet. She helped me with the size. We agreed on shipping so I could have the helmet Friday. Well Friday came and the helmet didn't. A UPS problem. Jessica was in touch with UPS and when it became clear that the helmet would not be delivered Friday or even

Saturday, Jessica informed me of her plans to be in Florida late Friday night. She offered to bring 2 helmets to make sure of the size and meet us Saturday on the way to our race. She did exactly what she said. We met at exit 44 on interstate 4. We got a perfect fit. On our way in minutes to our event. (my son won) Jessica is to be commended. It would have been easy for her to blame UPS and leave it there. Instead she went above and beyond and satisfied your customer. (By the way, I have been a Simpson Safety equipment customer for years using your helmets, belts, shoes, gloves and uniforms.)

Three-time Top Fuel champion Larry D managed to walk away from a frightening crash at the first qualifying session at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals on Saturday.

Larry's dragster started to buckle at nearly 280 mph, broke in half, got airborne, landed hard on the asphalt and then slid into the outside retaining wall at Auto-Plus Raceway.

Larry purchased a HANS device shortly after his Memphis incident and credits that, along with NHRA’s ongoing safety measures for allowing him to walk away from an incident that, years ago might have killed him. While “everything did its job” the landing was very hard on the asphalt, he confirmed.

"The last time I went through one of those, my eye literally popped out of its socket, I had a broken leg and a helicopter ride and all of that. The fact that I'm here and talking to you and have no broken bones and I still have both eyes — all the improvements in the car in the 15 years since I last did this have made a difference."

"It took like six or seven years before (the HANS device) was mandated," you learn from all these incidents and try to make things safer so you can go through stuff like that and be OK. Whether we race tomorrow is one thing, but I'm here talking to you. Last time, that wasn't an option."

Private blog James Cater Racing posted a story about the HANS device. “It’s an ingenious invention that has saved many lives. Basically, if you hit something hard head-on, the car stops dead but your head keeps on going forwards. What you may hear referred to as a ‘brain stem injury’ or ‘basil skull fracture’.

And you’re dead. A HANS device will stop your head going forward enough that your brain will stay attached to your spine, and you’ll live.”

That's a good way of explaining the beauty of a Head and Neck Restraint.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Currently there are two FHR's styles homologated by FIA. The most common HANS a Yoke Style and the newer alternate Hybrid a Strap Design both use

Shoulder Harness friction to restrict forward head movement and ensure proper rotation during rapid forward deceleration.

WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME?

In short, whichever is most comfortable for your application. All head restraints offered by Simpson are SFI or FIA approved. Whichever device you choose, determines the correct size. For example, HANS devices are available in five different widths and four angles depending on your neck size and seat angle.

The Hybrid Strap design requires a chest measurement and can be used in any reclining angle.

DO I HAVE TO USE A SPECIFIC SEATBELT HARNESS?

No but the configuration of the seatbelt harness is critical and some head restraint are tailored for use with a HR specific seatbelt harness. The shouldner strap mounting points should be even with the shoulders such that the straps make an angle of 10

to the horizontal. The mountings points must be equally disposed about the user's centreline so that straps spread inward slightly from the mountings and around the HR's. This helps to keep the straps firmly engaged with the HR's.

For Snell SA 2015, our helmets have also passed stricter “Low Velocity” requirements for low speed situations and “Low Lateral” impact testing. A correctly fitted helmet should feel like an even amount of pressure is being exerted around your head and cheeks But, helmets break in, so it should fit as tight as you can comfortably wear it. Once fastened, you should NOT be able to pull it off your head in any direction.

Attention first-time helmet buyers: If your helmet is loose at all, and doesn’t fit well, it CANNOT deliver the best protection. A helmet’s strict safety standards can be compromised after only one impact collision. If the integrity is in question, send it back to us for proper inspection.

The Game has changed in Off Road Seats with the introduction of the All New Vortex

XP 1000. The technology of a suspension seat combines with the versatility of a race inspired pan seat; the end result is a performance off road seat that will adapt to many different vehicles with ease.

The XP1000 Vortex seat provides high containment while still allowing easy entry/exit with its cutaway lower bolster design. It also features headrest holes for easy removal of 5 point safety harnesses and a submarine belt slot. It is designed to work with the factory slider without raising the rider in the vehicle by using Twisted Stitch Seats’ exclusive billet aluminum mounting system. It features a removable seat cushion for added comfort, more durability and easy cleaning.
