Connecting to the 'eduroam' Wireless Network
Windows 7
The information in this guide will assist Windows 7 users connecting to the 'eduroam' wireless
network at the University of Surrey.
D GETTING CONNECTED TO EDUROAM
1. Click on ‘Start’.
2. Click in the ‘Search programs and files’ box and type in ‘Set up connection or network’ in the
search box.

4. Click on "Manually connect to a wireless network” and then click ‘Next’.

5. The dialog box below will appear. In the ‘Network Name" box type eduroam (this must be n
lower case letters).
5.1 Set the Security type to 'WPA-Enterprise' or 'WPA2-Enterprise”.
5.2 Change the Encryption type so it says AES and click "Next".
5.3 Tick the box 'Start this connection automatically" and then click 'Next'.
Enter information for the wireless network you want to add
Network name: eduroam
Security type:
Encryption type:
Security Key: [] Hide characters
Start this connection automatically
Connect even if the network is not broadcasting
Warning: If you select this option, your computer's privacy might be at risk.
6. The next screen will say that the network has been successfully added. However there are still
more settings, so select ‘Change Connection Settings”.

Open the connection properties so that I can change the settings.
8. Ensure that the "Connect automatically when this network is in range' and ‘Connect to a more
preferred network if available’ tick boxes are checked.

9. Click on the Security tab at the top of the window. Verity that the ‘Choose a netvvork
authentication method’ box is set to ‘Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)".Click on 'Settings...".

10. The "Protected EAP Properties’ dialog box will appear:
10.1 Un-tick the Validate server certificate box.
10.2 Verity that the 'Select authentication method box’ is set to 'Secured password (EAP-
MSCHAP vL2)' and click on 'Configure...”.

12. A User Authentication pop up screen will appear. Enter your IT account username and
password and click "OK.
Note: For students your username will be your university email address. Members of staff will
need to use their IT username followed by @surrey.ac.uk.

13. Select 'OK' on the ‘Advances Settings’ dialogue box and each of the various dialogue boxes
open
14. You should now be connected to the ‘eduroam’ wireless network.
