MPX 423 A Matrix Switcher
MPX 423 A Matrix Switcher
Description
The Extron MPX 423 A is a unique multi-switcher that combines three independent 4x2 mini matrix switchers
and a 12x2 stereo audio matrix. This multi-switcher routes VGA, composite video, S-video, and associated
audio signals to one or two outputs of the same signal type. The MPX 423 A has 15-pin HD input connectors
for computer signals, BNC input connectors for composite video and 4-pin mini DIN input connectors for
S-video. Audio uses 5-pole, 3.5 mm captive-screw connectors and features balanced and unbalanced wiring.

4. Connect up to six VGA, S-video, and
Composite Video outputs (up to two of each type) to the input of each output device.
5. For audio input, connect up to 12 audio sources to audio inputs of the VGA, S-video, or Composite Video
groups (up to four for each group). Refer to Audio Connections for wiring diagrams.
6. For balanced and unbalanced audio output, connect an audio output device to both of the outputs. Refer to
Audio Connections for wiring diagrams.
7. If the switcher is to be connected to a computer or host controller for remote control, connect the host’s
RS-232 cable to the 9-pin female RS-232 connector of the switcher. For an RS-232 pinout table, refer to the
Remote Control Port (RS-232) section in Appendix A of the manual.
8. If the switcher is to be connected to a LAN, plug an RJ-45 jack into the back panel LAN port to connect the
unit to a computer network. The default IP address for the MPX 423 A is 192.168.254.254.
9. Power up the input and output devices, then connect power to the switcher's rear AC connector.

Audio connections are made to and from
the switcher using 5-pole, 3.5 mm
captive-screw connectors. Three
methods of wiring the audio connectors
for input and for output are shown in the
examples at right.

Reading the LEDs
In audio/video I/O mode:
In audio-only or video-only I/O mode:
• a lit input LED represents a video-only tie
• A lit input LED represents a tie
• a flashing input LED represents an audio tie
• I/O LEDs are lit to show the signal type
• a flashing audio I/O LED represents audio
that follows the video signal
A flashing output LED represents a muted state.
• an active video LED is always lit
Selecting the switcher mode for output
Select an output (1 or 2). Press the Mode button until the Single and Seperate LEDs light. The flashing LED indicates
the active mode. Make a selection between the Single and Seperate modes.
Single Switcher mode
Making a tie in Single switcher (one switcher with 12 inputs) mode — Select the output (output 1 or output 2). Select
the desired input by pressing the associated input button. The selected input is routed to the output of its group. The
outputs of the other groups are disconnected.
Separate switcher mode
Making a tie in Separate switcher (three groups with four inputs each) mode — Select the output (output 1 or output 2)
for each group. Select the desired input in any (or all) of the three switcher groups (VGA, S-video, or Video) by
pressing the associated input button. The inputs are routed to the output for each respective group. Observe that the
LEDs (up to three) for the selected inputs light up.
Mute and volume control (output 1 only) — To adjust the volume, use the Audio Volume control knob. To mute Audio
output 1, press the Mute button (the red LED will light to indicate that Audio is muted).
Front panel security lockout — This feature prevents use of any functions on the MPX 423 A. If a user presses any
button during this state, the I/O button LEDs will flash to indicate its lockdown status. For detailed instructions on
operating the Front Panel Security Lockout feature, refer to the MPX 423 A Matrix Switcher manual.
