Function and application
The position transmitter SMAT-8M has been designed for continuous registering of
the piston position of magnetically scannable drives. Drives from Festo with
T-groove (profile groove 8) as well as round cylinders and tie rod cylinders with
fastening kits chapter 4.2 are suitable.
The position of the piston is registered contactless (magnetic). The measured
result is provided as a voltage signal via an analogue output. Within the measured
range an output signal proportional to the position is supplied.
The red LED 4 indicates that the piston is outside the measured range (integrated
out-of-range recognition – OOR).
The green LED 5 indicates that the piston is within the measured range.
By means of the ouput signal proportionate to the position, the SMAT can be used
in the following fields of application:
– object recognition (position, good/bad part, sorting)
– process monitoring (measuring, quality, wear)
– object recognition (terminals, pressing in, clamping).
– Use instead of a simple proximity switch If the application does not permit the
use of sensors for fine adjustment due to lack of space, any desired switching
position within the measured range can be defined by using the SMAT-8M in the
controller.

Safety conditions
Note
Improper handling can result in malfunctions.
• Make sure that the following specifications are always observed.
Warning
Use power supplies which guarantee reliable electrical isolation of the operating
voltage as per IEC/EN 60204-1. Consider also the general requirements for PELV
circuits in accordance with IEC/EN 60204-1.
Note
Long signal cables reduce the immunity to interference.
• Connect the SMAT-8M with a short cable to the analogue input of the
controller. Max. cable length see chapter 12.

UL-information
Only in connection with the UL mark on the product: To comply with the approval
requirements of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for USA and Canada, please
observe the following information from UL:
– Only for use in Class 2 Circuits.
– Field installed conductors for the position transmitter shall be segregated
from field and factory installed conductors and uninsulated live parts of other
circuits operating at over 150 V to ground so that a minimum permanent
2 inch (50.8 mm) separation is maintained, unless the field wiring conductors
have been provided with recognized insulating material which has an equal or
higher voltage rating than the other circuit involved.

• Only trained personnel with appropriate qualifications may carry out installation
and commissioning in accordance with these operating instructions.
• Compare the maximum values specified in these operating instructions with
your actual application (e.g. pressures, forces, torques, temperatures, masses,
speeds).
• Take into consideration the ambient conditions at the location of use.
• Please comply with national and local safety laws and regulations.
• Remove the transport packing.
• The packing is intended for recycling (except for: oiled paper = other waste).
• Use the product in its original state. Unauthorized modification is not permitted,
e.g. do not remove the connecting plug.
• Use the SMAT-8M only with the suitable drives from Festo chapter 4.2.
A check must be made before the SMAT-8M is used on other drives.
• Avoid magnetic objects in the proximity of the SMAT-8M. These could influence
the magnetic field and thereby the behaviour of the sensor.
• The device is intended for use in an industrial environment. In residential areas,
measures for radio interference suppression may have to be taken.

Installation
The SMAT-8M can be fitted in any position.
4.1 Signal behaviour
The analogue signal of the SMAT-8M increases when the piston rod extends,
irrespective of the direction in which the SMAT-8M is fitted in the T-groove
chapter 6.
If the SMAT-8M is used on grippers, the direction of increase of the analogue signal
will not be known until after commissioning.

4.3 Mechanical installation
Note
• Before you can operate the SMAT-8M, you must initialize the measuring range
of the SMAT-8M chapter 5.
For initialization you will require a connecting cable with an open end,
e.g. NEBU-M8G4-...-LE4 chapter 11.
The SMAT-8M is connected to the switched-off operating voltage with this
connecting cable as follows Fig. 4.

5.2 Initializing the measuring range when using the SMAT-8M on standard
cylinders
Cylinders with a stroke of at least 40 mm are designated as standard cylinders in
this documentation.
You can initialize the SMAT-8M as follows:
Fasten the SMAT-8M as follows:
1. Place the SMAT-8M in the T-groove 2 of the drive.

Even a slight tightening torque suffices for firm fastening.

Tighten the fastening screw with max. 0.6 Nm — hexagon socket wrench with
width across flats 1.5 mm or screwdriver 1.
Switch off the operating voltage.
Position the piston of the standard cylinder by hand in one of the two end
positions of the standard cylinder.
Connect the SMAT-8M with the cable with open end to the operating voltage

Switch on the operating voltage.
The red LED flashes, the SMAT-8M is ready for initializing.
4.4 Electrical installation
Note
• Before you can operate the SMAT-8M, you must initialize the measuring range
of the SMAT-8M chapter 5.

Commissioning
The measuring range of the SMAT-8M must be initialized during commissioning,
as the magnetic properties of the drives differ.
5.1 General instructions
Place the SMAT-8M by hand in the T-groove opposite the position of the
piston Fig. 5.
6. Shift the SMAT-8M in the T-groove slowly in the direction of the piston
Fig. 5, until the green LED lights up.
7. Fasten the SMAT-8M in this position chapter 4.3.
8. Disconnect pin 4 from the operating voltage without interrupting the
operating voltage at pin 1, chapter 5.1.
The red LED goes out.
The SMAT-8M is ready for operation. The initialized properties are retained
even after a power failure.
9. Connect the SMAT-8M to the analogue input of the controller Fig. 3.
10. Shift the SMAT-8M into the desired measuring position.
5.3 Initializing the measuring range when using the SMAT-8M on compact
cylinders
Cylinders with a maximum stroke of 40 mm are designated as compact cylinders in
this documentation.
You can initialize the SMAT-8M as follows:

Note
The SMAT-8M must be connected to the switched-off operating voltage for
initializing the measuring range.

Switch off the operating voltage.
Position the piston of the compact cylinder by hand in the mid-position of the
piston stroke.
Connect the SMAT-8M with the cable with open end to the operating voltage

Switch on the operating voltage.
The red LED flashes, the SMAT-8M is ready for initializing.
During initialization the operating voltage at pin 1 and pin 3 must not be
interrupted.
• Use a separate connecting terminal for connecting pin 4 to the operating
voltage.
Magnetic tools can impede initialization.
• Use non-magnetic tools for fastening the SMAT-8M.
During initialization the measuring range of the SMAT-8M will be set to the
magnetic properties of the drive.
• Initialize the SMAT-8M again each time the drive is replaced.

11. If the end positions are not registered (OOR), shift the SMAT-8M into the
desired end position.

5.4 Initializing the measuring range when using the SMAT-8M on grippers
You can initialize the SMAT-8M as follows:

Switch off the operating voltage.
Position the gripper jaws of the gripper by hand in the mid-position of the
gripper stroke.
Connect the SMAT-8M with the cable with open end to the operating voltage

The red LED flashes, the SMAT-8M is ready for initializing.
5.5 Scaling the analogue signal
With grippers and compact cylinders the SMAT-8M supplies an analogue signal of
approx. 4 … 6 V after initialization of the measuring range, as the piston stroke is
smaller than the registering range of the SMAT-8M. This is not function-relevant
and does not influence the repeatability. However, the analogue signal can be
scaled to the piston stroke.
You can scale the analogue signal to the piston stroke as follows:
1. Switch off the operating voltage.
2. Disconnect the SMAT-8M from the analogue input.
3. Connect the SMAT-8M with the cable with open end to the operating voltage
Fig. 4.
4. Switch on the operating voltage.
5. Move the piston or the gripper jaws with compressed air once into each end
position.
6. Disconnect pin 4 from the operating voltage without interrupting the
operating voltage at pin 1, chapter 5.1.
The signal range of the SMAT-8M is now extended to the optimum of the
relevant drive.
7. Connect the SMAT-8M to the analogue input of the controller Fig. 3.
Note
The offset of the signal range, e.g. 2 … 10 V, 1 … 9 V, etc. arises because the
piston of the compact cylinder or the jaws of the gripper are not exactly in the
middle of the stroke during initialization.
This is not function-relevant and does not influence the repeatability.

Fitting instructions if fastening kits are used
Fasten the SMAT-8M in the T-groove of the fastening kit so that the front of the
SMAT-8M is flush with the T-groove.
Note
If the SMAT-8M is used with fastening kit SMBR-8, the T-groove of fastening kit
SMBR-8 is not long enough to enable the front of the SMAT-8M to be flush with
the T-groove, chapter 7.1.

There are three speed-dependent filter stages: The examples apply for a sensing range of 20 mm.

means of the mechanical structure.
4) Better in the middle of the registering range.
5) Recommendation: Connect a resistor to the analogue output, typ. 10 kΩ.
6) The output current is limited internally to max. 5 mA.
