1.Introduction
Linux ham radio software is at the cutting edge of technology, free to install and use. Because
Linux is also open source, you can even modify the software if you like! You will find a list of
ham radio applications as you go along reading the manual
Are you a mac or windows user thinking about the wonderful open-source Linux distros
(Operating System).
Your computer life is now going to change, ask yourself one question do you have a learning
curve with mac and windows.
Can you design the type of operating system you want to use with mac and windows, the
answer is ''no'', with Linux and open-source the sky is the limit, you have alternative choices,
based on your needs and likeness.
Getting our youths involved from an early age into open source is a good way for parents to
enhance their thinking and ability to be creative and imaginative.
Do you know many of the electronics gadgets people use are run by Linux, please watch the
video How Linux is Built.

While Linux is running our phones, friend requests, tweets, financial trades, ATM’s and more, most
of us don’t know how it’s actually built. This short video takes you inside the process by which the
largest collaborative development Project in the history of computing is organized. Based on the
annual report“Who Writes Linux,” this is a powerful and inspiring story of how Linux has become
a community-driven phenomenon.
The Choice is Yours
 A learning curve-Very easy to manage-Free operating system-No anti virus software to
worry about
 Get to learn more about the computer and open source software you use
 Social Media;Office, Art, Video, Skype, Facebook, Mumble, Instagram, Netflix and plenty
more.
 For Amateur Radio and other hobbyist tons of software to install already preinstall in
synaptic Package Manager or Muon Package Manager
Here are your choices
 Upgrade to Linux. Yes there is a learning curve and Massive Development building your
own Operating System with a Software Bank of over forty thousands plus software.
 Linux Desktops Have Better User Interface and Unix As Compared To Windows And Mac!
 The quality of Linux from using the distros. It has the most attractive User Interface and
elements now. Leading Linux distro companies like Canonical are hiring young and
talented designers to improve the looks and User Interface of Linux platform. The user
experience is not just about themes anymore. The progress of User Interface changes is real
and measurable now.
 Linux distros are best at customization. Since Linux is an open source OS, companies
releasing new distros are offering much more customization options as compared to
Windows or Mac OS X. You can do anything you want with Linux, users have access to the
code, core features, packages, repositories and every single thing.
 Proprietary operating systems like Windows and Mac lack at flexibility in User Interface.
While Linux likes to continue its minimalistic approach towards all the User Interface
elements, proprietary OS are little complex. The changes in Linux User Interface can be
done with great ease. No wonder why Linux has such massive active developers
community.
 User can easily install and configure dock within few clicks on Linux distros. Installing a
theme is an easy task too. Proprietary OSs lack these kinds of customization options. The

window decoration and positioning of User Interface elements is neat and tidy in Linux.
Distros like Fedora 21, Arch Linux, elementary OS, Ubuntu distros have very beautiful User
Interface.
 Distros like Ubuntu have employed the powerful Unity Unix in the system too. Everything
in the latest versions of leading Linux distros is very neat and professional. If you compare
the User Interface in next generation Linux distros., it makes Windows and Mac OS X look
extremely encumbered. Linux has the breath of fresh air. The freedom that Linux gives is
just incomparable. tch the video Easing into open source
2.Open Source versus Proprietary Software
Get a betting understanding of open source and propriety software
Proprietary software are those that are created by companies to turn a profit. On the other hand,
open source software are created by individuals and open source communities alike to promote
access to the product’s source materials etc, that will create economic and social development for
those who do not have in society.

3.The Major Problems With Windows
 Do nothing. Keep using XP. No learning curve. No expense and Development.
 Upgrade to the latest windows Yes there is an expense and someone spying on you via a
back-door protocol
 Having to used useless products like registry cleaners and system tuners that waste your
money, but how do you go about cleaning up after uninstalling shady Windows base
freeware software? With Windows You don’t. You always have to avoid installing nonsense
on your PC it is constant and become a way of life
 At the presence computing development all Windows base freeware software is bundled
with spyware, crapware, adware, or with a back-door protocol to spy on you, which
includes things like the awful Ask Toolbar or the terrible Trovi browser hijacker malware.
 Every other download site is either wrapping crapware filled freeware with their own
crapware, or they are just distributing installers full of crapware. Some of them will only
bundle the crapware if you are using Internet Explorer — so you think you’re
recommending a clean source to your family because you’re using Chrome, only to help
them get infected because they are still on IE. Even Windows base open-source software

isn’t safe.
 New Windows base Computers The useless, irritating programs that come pre-installed on
your PC or sneak onto your system a midst an innocuous download aren’t malicious, but
they will clog up your system and get in your face constantly. It’s almost worse than
malware, because instead of just nuking your computer, they stick around and make your
experience dreadful.
 Every Microsoft Word document you create contains a hidden log of everything you did to
it, ever. Specifically, it contains a revision history showing who touched the document, and
when. You'd think this would be the sort of thing military intelligence would care about
when creating sensitive word documents, but you'd be wrong they are totally unaware.
 Everyone who is unaware of the dangers of back-door entries in Microsoft Windows and
associated software including governments make the mistake of posting online in its
original Word documentation this mistake its revision history is visible to anyone who
know where to look and find other information, this is how in many cases leaks are
obtained from IT Spies and computers sniffers
 Inspect documents for hidden data and personal information
Microsoft Support
while they try to address the problems just by using your keyboard with specific commands
and recovery software the information can be retrieve, it's stores on the hard drive.
 Now that you have this information about Microsoft Word Document are you still crazy for
it and wanting to use it.
4.Stealing Files On Windows Computer
How safe are you using a windows' computer, is it that easy to steal files on the windows as is
said by many IT Specialist how true is it to steals files.
Can anyone comprise your computer if sensitive data is stored on the computer, it is that
easy ready the following articles and see for yourself if it that easy.

6.Linux is not Windows
Are you're a relatively new Linux user who's having some problems making the switch from
Windows to Linux. This causes many problems for many people, hence this article was written.
Many individual issues arise from this single problem, so the page is broken down into multiple
problem areas. Read the article Linux is Not Windows.

7.Windows Under Linux
There are a certain number of applications, both open-source and commercial, that will allow
Windows applications to run under Linux. They are referred to as emulators, meaning that they
replicate the functions of Windows on a Linux platform. Many MS Office applications, games and
other programs can be run using an emulator with varying degrees of success ranging from nearnative speed and functionality to only basic performance.
Wine is the primary open-source Windows emulator for Linux. It is a kind of compatibility layer
for running Windows programs, but does not require Microsoft Windows to run the applications.
Installed through any Linux distro via the software center Package Installer. Wine versions are
rapidly packaged by the Community Repository members and made available to users.
Wine is pre-installed on all Linux operating, it can be downloaded from the software center (aka
apps store)
8.Minicom
Minicom is a text-based serial port communications program, similar to Cutecom. It is used to talk
to external RS232 devices such as mobile phones, routers. It's available for all versions of the
Ubuntu family. Links to several specific guides for configuring hardware are detailed in the 'Useful

Centos
The CentOS Linux distribution is a stable, predictable, manageable and reproduceable platform
derived from the sources of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). We are now looking to expand on
that by creating the resources needed by other communities to come together and be able to build
on the CentOS Linux platform. And today we start the process by delivering a clear governance
model, increased transparency and access. In the coming weeks we aim to publish our own road
map that includes variants of the core CentOS Linux.
Since March 2004, CentOS Linux has been a community-supported distribution derived from
sources freely provided to the public by Red Hat. As such, CentOS Linux aims to be functionally
compatible with RHEL. We mainly change packages to remove upstream vendor branding and
artwork. CentOS Linux is no-cost and free to redistribute .
CentOS Linux is developed by a small but growing team of core developers. In turn the core
developers are supported by an active user community including system administrators, network
administrators, managers, core Linux contributors, and Linux enthusiasts from around the world.

Debian
WHAT is Debian?
The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a Free
operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian.
An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the
core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the
computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.

Isn’t amateur radio “old-fashioned”?
Most amateur radio operators are very much in tune with today’s “hi tech” world and tend to be
“early adopters” of emerging technologies. A lot of hams work in hi tech. For example the Finnish
cellphone giant Nokia recruits a large part of its workforce from the local ham radio community.
