FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

There are two versions of the RACOM Series 900 DIGITAL MESSAGE ANNOUNCER / RE-

PEATER. The Model 900S has a low impedance audio output jack and a message repeat timer.

The Model 900L has a telephone line interface and will answer a telephone line and give a message. In this manual, 900 or Series 900 refers to features common to both units unless indicated otherwise.

The Series 900 DIGITAL MESSAGE ANNOUNCER / REPEATER is a compact audio recording and playback device which digitally records and stores your announcement or message in nonvolatile electronic semiconductor memory. It has been designed to fill a multitude of applications which includes telephone line announcers, telephone company central office recordings, on-hold announcements and information services, or any other application requiring a message (or messages) to be delivered repetitiously without failure. The most obvious advantage of storing audio in a solid state memory is the absence of moving parts. With no moving parts, maintenance costs are reduced and the useful life of equipment is dramatically increased.

The recording or message stored within a 900 may easily be changed in the field as often as is required. A handset is plugged into the front panel modular jack to facilitate the recording process. The message may be recorded and checked with the front panel switches.

Message playback can be initiated with modular connection, with the internal timer on the Model

900S or with telephone line answer on the Model 900L. After the playback cycle has been initiated, the internal relay energizes and remains energized during the entire message.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

The Model 900 may be powered from its 120 VAC 10 Watt wall plug transformer or with 11-25 volts AC/DC connected directly to the unit. This makes the 900 ideal for 12 Volt battery operation.

On units with a power jack, the wall plug transformer or other low voltage power source should be plugged into this jack. With DC power the center pin of the power connector should be positive.

MOTION SENSOR OPTION

The motion is about one cubic inch in size and has a seven foot cable which plugs into the

“OUTPUT” connector on the 900S. The motion sensor takes about one minute to stabilize after being first plugged into the 900S. Pressing the stop button will disable the motion sensor. Pressing the play button will make the 900S play the message once and then will enable the motion sensor.

PUSH BUTTON SWITCH OPTION

The option has a seven foot cable which plugs into the “OUTPUT” connector on the 900S.

4

OPERATION

Normally, the Series 900 is automatically operated via the connections on the modular line connector marked “OUTPUT”. On the unit, there is a modular handset connector and push buttons that are used for recording and manual playing of messages. The functions of these items are listed below.

PLAY PUSH BUTTON

Pushing this button provides one playback of the message and enables the 900 after the message is played.

STOP PUSH BUTTON

Pushing this button disables the 900 and ends a recording or playback cycle. This button also disables the automatic operation of the unit.

ON/OFF or ENABLE/DISABLE

The unit may be enabled or disabled with the PLAY or STOP buttons.

Pressing the PLAY button will enable the unit so its external connections or timer will make a message play. Pushing the STOP button will disable the unit. When the unit is disabled it, will not answer a telephone line or play a message with the its external connections.

RECORDING A MESSAGE

To record the message, plug a telephone handset into the modular jack marked "INPUT" and press both buttons simultaneously. The unit will now be recording audio from the handset. For the highest audio quality, talk loudly and directly into the handset. The recording is stopped or ended when either button is pressed again. After a message is recorded, the PLAY button should be pressed to check the message and enable the unit.

AUDIO DOWNLOAD CABLE (Option T)

This cable is for loading the audio recording into a 900S from a computer or CD. Plug this cable into the audio output on the computer or CD player. Plug the other end into the “INPUT” jack on the 900S. Then put the 900S into record and the computer or CD into play. Please refer to the

“RECORDING A MESSAGE” instructions shown above.

INPUT or MODULAR HANDSET CONNECTOR (J2)

The connector mark "INPUT" is used for recording and checking of the message. A modular telephone handset may be plugged into this connector for this purpose. For applications that require an audio output, speaker or audio input, the pin out of this connector is as follows:

AUDIO OUTPUT OR EAR PHONE (Red and green wires)

An audio output or ear phone connection is available between the red and green wires.

This is a differential driver capable of driving 600 ohms with 50 milliwatts.

AUDIO INPUT (Yellow and black wires)

Line level audio may be inputted on the yellow and black wires with the black wire being the ground.

5

EXTERNAL LINE CONNECTIONS (Model 900S only)

The model 900S may have its message played from the front panel switch, from a closure between the blue and white modular connector wires, or from its internal message repeat timer.

AUDIO OUTPUT:

The audio output is on the 3.5mm miniature phone jack located on the back of the 900S.

This output is line level and should be connected to an amplifier or amplified speakers.

MODULAR OUTPUT CONNECTOR (J3) :

The motion sensor or push button switch options plug into this connector.

This is a RJ12 connector and its wiring color table is shown below. In the 900S position

1 is closest to LED and position 6 is at the edge of the 900S.

AUDIO OUTPUT (Green and white wires)

An audio output capable of driving an unbalanced 600 ohm load (such as an input on an external amplifier) with +1 DBM may be taken between the green and white wires. The white wire is the ground.

EXTERNAL MESSAGE PLAY (Blue and white wires)

An external closure between the blue and white wires will make the unit play. The white wire is ground. The message will play and repeat for as long as this circuit is closed. A push button switch may be connected between these two wires.

SWITCHED OUTPUT or RELAY CONTACT (Red and white wires)

A switched output that closes when the message is played is provided between the red and white wires. This output contains a transistor switch that connects the red wire (positive) to the white wire (ground) when the message is played. We can also supply a normal open relay contact between these wires. The relay is isolated from ground and may switch AC or audio.

MOTION SENSOR OR EAR PHONE AUDIO (Yellow and black wires) (OPTIONAL)

An external speaker or ear phone may be connected between the black and yellow wires. This is a differential output capable of driving 8 ohms with 50 milliwatts.

To drive multiple speakers connect the speakers in series.

MOTION SENSOR CONNECTIONS – Wire positions 1, 2 and 5

The Racom supplied motion sensor connects to the wires in these positions. Wire position 1 is the common or ground. The motion sensor pulses 5V on to wire position 2 to make the message play. Wire position 5 supplies 5V power to the motion sensor. Care should be taken not to connect this wire to anything other than the motion sensor. The motion sensor uses a special four wire cable that does not follow the standard color table shown above. On units that do not support the motion sensor, differential audio is between the wire positions 2 and 5.

TELEPHONE LINE ANSWER (Model 900L)

Model 900L has a built-in telephone interface circuit. This model will answer a telephone line and play the recorded announcement on the line. Connection to the telephone line is provided by the modular RJ-11 connector marked "Line" or “Output” (J3). The 900L must be connected to the telephone line with a four conductor cable with an RJ-11 modular connector. Do not use a six conductor cable for this purpose. The 900L will automatically disconnect from the telephone when it reaches the end of its message.

EXTERNAL MESSAGE START

The 900L model may be operated without phone line connections. Shown below are the functions of the wires on the modular connector marked "Output" (J3).

Red & green wires The telephone line connects between these wires and audio is

between them as the unit plays.
