12.Replacement For Windows
Antergos
Previously known as Cinnarch, Antergos is based on Arch Linux, which is popular with hard-core
open source users, but Antergos much easier for beginners to use than Arch. It comes with a
graphical installer that allows the user to choose from among several interfaces, including some

that look quite a bit like XP.
Kubuntu
Kubuntu's goal is to “make your PC friendly," and it's fairly easy for new Linux users to figure out.
It combines Ubuntu and the KDE desktop and includes plenty of built-in software, like a web
browser, an office suite, media apps and more.
Kwheezy
Kwheezy is based on Debian, which is popular with advanced Linux users, but it's designed to be
more accessible for Linux newcomers. It comes "with all the applications, plugins, fonts and
drivers that you need for daily use, and some more," and it uses the intuitive KDE desktop.
Korora
Based on Fedora, Korara "aims to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for
experts" with an operating system that "just works." Several desktops are available, so users can
choose the interface that seems the most comfortable and familiar.
Knoppix
If you just want to give Linux a try without installing anything on your hard drive, Knoppix runs
from a Live CD. You can download the code and create your own CD or order a very inexpensive
pre -made CD from any one of a variety of vendors.
Linux Mint
Many people consider Linux Mint to be among the most intuitive operating systems for Windows
XP users. It supports several desktop interfaces, including Cinnamon, which users can configure to
look and feel a lot like XP.
MEPIS
Popular with new Linux users, MEPIS aims at providing a Linux distribution that's very stable and
very easy to use. It comes with hundreds of applications preinstalled and you can easily dual-boot
it alongside Windows so that you can continue using XP software.
Manjaro
Like Antergos, Manjaro aims to be a more user-friendly version of Arch. It comes with desktop
environments, software management applications and media codecs pre-installed so users can get
right to work after installing it.
Mageia
Forked from Mandrake (which was later renamed Mandriva), Mageia is a community-driven Linux
distribution with a good reputation for being beginner-friendly. Because it's updated very
frequently, it tends to include more recent versions of software packages, and it has excellent
support for several languages.
Netrunner
Netrunner is based on Kubuntu, plus some interface modifications to make it even more user
friendly and some extra codecs to make it easier to play media files. The project also offers a
second version of the same OS based on Manjaro.
OpenMandriva
Like Mageia, OpenMandriva is a community-managed Linux distribution based on
Mandrake/Mandriva. It attempts to be simple and straightforward enough for new users but also
to offer the breadth and depth of capabilities demanded by advanced users.

Point Linux
Also based on Debian, Point Linux uses the Mate desktop, which should feel comfortable to most
Windows XP users. It aims to be a "fast, stable and predictable" desktop operating system.
PCLinuxOS
Like many other OSes on this list, PCLinuxOS was designed with usability in mind. It can run from
a LiveCD, meaning you can try it out while still keeping Windows XP installed on your PC.
Robolinux
Also similar to Windows, Robolinux promises to allow users to run all their Windows XP and 7
software without making themselves vulnerable to malware. It also includes more than 30,000
open source applications.
StartOS
Formerly known as YLMF, the interface for StartOS looks an awful lot like Windows XP. It's
managed by a group of Chinese developers, so the website is in Chinese. However, English versions
of the OS are available.
Sabayon
This Linux distribution focuses on providing an excellent "out of the box" user experience where
everything "just works." At the same time, it attempts to incorporate the latest releases of open
source software. And in case you were wondering, the name comes from an Italian dessert
Ubuntu
Very easy to use, Ubuntu is likely the most widely used Linux distribution in the world. The
desktop version offers speed, security, thousands of built-in applications and compatibility with
most peripherals.
Ultimate Edition
This Ubuntu remix aims to provide the "ultimate" computing experience. It offers an intuitive
interface for newbies and improves on Ubuntu's software management and wireless capabilities.
13.Lightweight
Operating systems which will happily run on older machines
Linux distros are designed to appeal to many users. As a result, some distros have become too
bloated for older machines or systems with limited resources. If you don't have several gigs of
RAM to spare and an extra core or two, these distros may not deliver the best performance for
you.
Thankfully, there are many lightweight distros that you can use to breathe new life into older
hardware. But there's one caveat when working with lightweight distros – they usually manage to
function with limited resources by cutting away just about everything you take for granted, such
as wizards and scripts which make everyday tasks easier.
Arch Arch Linux, a lightweight and flexible Linux® distribution that tries to Keep It Simple
AntiX
Designed specifically for older systems, AntiX claims it can even run on old 64 MB Pentium II 266
systems. It comes in full, base and core distributions, with full being the best option for Linux
newcomers.

Browser Linux is a fast-booting operating system, derived from Puppy Linux, making it a wise
choice for any computer, particularly older machines. Browserlinux is for browsing the web.
Browser Linux – An Extremely Lightweight & Fast OS For Older x86 Computers
Bodhi Linux
Another lightweight variation of Ubuntu, Bodhi is a true minimalist distribution that installs only
a few pieces of software by default. That makes it great for users with older hardware or users who
want to have a lot of say in which applications are installed; however, it might not be as good for
new users who don't have familiarity with open source applications.
CrunchBang
Because it's fairly lightweight, CrunchBang (sometimes written #!) is a good option for older or
underpowered systems that might be running Windows XP. It's based on Debian but uses the
OpenBox window manager, which will feel familiar to Windows users.
Damn Small Linux (DSL)
Just 50MB in size, DSL can run on old 486 PCs or can run within RAM on newer PCs with at least
128 MB of memory. It comes with a surprising number of applications built in, and it can also run
from a live CD or USB thumb drive.
Elementary OS
According to Distrowatch, Elementary is among the ten most popular Linux distributions. It's very
lightweight and fast, and the interface, while more similar to OS X than Windows XP, is highly
intuitive.
Joli OS
This cloud computing-focused OS aims to "bring your old computers back to life." You can also
install it alongside Windows with the option of selecting an OS on start-up. It works with the
Jolicloud service that stores your files in the cloud.
Linux Lite
As its name implies, this is another lightweight Linux distribution. Its website states, "The goal of
Linux Lite is to introduce Windows users to an intuitively simple, alternative operating system.
Linux Lite is a showcase for just how easy it can be to use Linux.”
Lubuntu
If you have an older system that doesn't meet the system requirements for Windows 7 or 8,
Lubuntu might be a good option for you. It's a lightweight version of Ubuntu that's very fast and
energy efficient, and it's a particularly good choice for underpowered Windows XP laptops.
LXLE
This variation on Lubuntu was specifically designed to help users give new life to older PCs. It has
four different desktop paradigms (basically different looks), including one that mimics Windows
XP. Users who have grown tired of XP's long boot times will also appreciate the fact that LXLE
boots in less than a minute on most systems.
Linux MultiMedia Studio

If you have a really, really old or underpowered system, you may want to take a look at Tiny Core
Linux. It weighs in at just 12MB but still offers a graphical interface, but doesn't include a lot of
hardware support or applications. It's highly customizable, however, so users can easily add in just
what they need while keeping the OS footprint small.
Ubuntu Touch
Ubuntu Touch is a mobile version of the Ubuntu operating system developed by Canonical UK Ltd
and Ubuntu Community.[2] It is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as
smartphones and tablet computers.

Formerly known as "Minislack," ZenWalk is a lightweight distribution that focuses on fast
performance and support for multimedia. It includes some special features that appeal to
programmers, and the desktop version can also be tweaked to function as a server. Note that the

SimpleMepis
Trisquel Mini
Trisquel GNU/Linux is a fully free operating system for home users, small enterprises and
educational centers.
Xubuntu Core
Xubuntu core is a slimmed down version of Xubuntu that doesn’t come with all the additional
features of a full and modern desktop. We essentially only ship Xfce and the basic look and feel of
Xubuntu, so there will be no office suite, media players, et cetera. The obvious benefit is that this
ISO (about 600MB) will be faster to download – especially interesting for those with limited
connectivity – and fit on a CD. We have been working on this for a while, which is why you can
already install it starting with Utopic Introducing Xubuntu core .

Linux Mint XFCE
The purpose of Linux Mint is to produce a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system
which is both powerful and easy to use. Started in 2006, Linux Mint is now the 4th most widely
used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu.
Some reasons for the success of Linux Mint are:It works out of the box, with full multimedia
support and is extremely easy to use. It's both free of cost and open source. It's community-driven.
Users are encouraged to send feedback to the project so that their ideas can be used to improve
Linux Mint. Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and one of the best
software managers. It's safe and reliable. Thanks to a conservative approach to software updates, a
unique Update Manager and the robustness of its Linux architecture, Linux Mint requires very
little maintenance (no regressions, no antivirus, no anti-spy ware...etc).

Peppermint OS
Something a Little Different...People have been trying to create an effective web centric operating
system for years now. This is especially true in Linux with projects like the Ubuntu Netbook
Remix, Google Chrome OS, and Moblin all coming to the forefront in recent years. On the downside
of things, these systems, though great for surfing the web, lack a lot of the familiarity that people
demand from something they use on a day to day basis. Here at Peppermint, we’re committed to
giving you a system that won’t throw you for a loop while trying to get things settled in. While
conceptualizing Peppermint, we toyed around with a lot of ideas trying to determine how best to
meet our goal of providing a fast, web-centric operating
System that’s easy to learn and effective when put in use. The end result was a decision to use an
interface that stays out of your way and lets you go about your business. The default desktop
environment for Peppermint is LXDE (literally, “Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment”) which
has shown itself time and again to be user friendly, easy on the eyes, and wicked fast.

SolydX
SolydX and SolydK are Debian based distributions with the Xfce and KDE desktop. SolydXK aims to
be simple in use, providing an environment that is both stable and secure. SolydXK is an open
source alternative for small businesses, non-profit organizations and home users. A bit of history
You find SolydXK’s roots in another great distribution: Linux Mint. There were two distributions
which I liked very much: Linux Mint KDE and Linux Mint Debian Edition. There were once rumors
that the two would merge, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. So, I decided to make my own
distribution. First as a tutorial in the forum, but later it became known as “The unofficial LMDE
KDE”. When Linux Mint dropped their LMDE Xfce edition, I started that one from scratch and “The
unofficial LMDE Xfce” was born. Both these editions were mainly created with the help of the
community. Without them they simply wouldn’t exist. Especially with the Xfce edition where the
community decided which software was to be included and which software not. So, these
distributions are really community driven. When it became clear that the unofficial editions were
not going to become official I decided to take the next step and let these great distributions stand
on their own two feet and the unofficial got their proper names: SolydX and SolydK. SolydXK will
not forget its roots. SolydXK and Linux Mint closely work together to make our distributions even
better.

Permissions
The Unix-like operating systems, such as Linux differ from other computing systems in that they
are not only multitasking but also multi-user.
What exactly does this mean? It means that more than one user can be operating the computer at
the same time. While your computer only has one keyboard and monitor, it can still be used by
more than one user. For example, if your computer is attached to a network, or the Internet,
remote users can log in via ssh (secure shell) and operate the computer. In fact, remote users can
execute graphical applications and have the output displayed on a remote computer. The X
Window system supports this.

Ardour
Ardour is an open source, collaborative effort of a worldwide team including musicians,
programmers, and professional recording engineers. Development is transparent — anyone can
watch our work as it happens. Like a good piece of vintage hardware, you can open the box and
look inside. Of course, you don't have to … but one day the fact that anybody can will be useful.
This openness forces a kind of integrity on the project that is hard to find in proprietary software,
and helps us to focus on issues and features that matter to our users rather than stuff that just
looks good in advertisements.
64 Studio
64 Studio is based on Debian designed for creative users on x86-64 and legacy 32-bit hardware
architectures. It intends to serve as an all-in-one solution for audio and video recording, editing,
and other forms of media production. An alternative installer is available for systems with 32-bit

Remove Amazon Results from Dash
Ubuntu added Amazon integration into a few releases ago. While many people complained
that their privacy was at risk since every search was being sent to Amazon’s servers.
To remove the Amazon search results from the Dash, simply run the command sudo apt-get
autoremove unity-lens-shopping and restart. This will get rid of the Dash lens that is
responsible for those results
Alternatively, you can also go into the System Settings –> Privacy, and disable Online
Search Results. Do note that this toggle will affect not just the Amazon search results, but
also any other dash lenses that require the Internet to function
The Linux distros for privacy and security
Linux Operating Systems comes in various categories based on use case and the intended target
group. Server, education, games, amateur and multimedia are some of the most popular categories
of Linux distros.
For security conscious users, however, there's a growing niche of distros aimed at protecting your
privacy. These distros help ensure you don't leave a digital footprint as you go about navigating
the web.
However, for the truly paranoid, privacy distros are only one part of the equation – and the
greater part of that equation involves penetration testing distros. These are distros designed for
analyzing and evaluating network and system security. These efforts feature a vast array of
forensic tools to help you test your configured systems for potential weaknesses.

Users interested in trying a desktop operating system that isn't based on Linux can also check out
PC-BSD. It's based on FreeBSD, which is known for its stability, and emphasizes user-friendliness.
Older versions supported the KDE desktop only, but the latest update allows users to select their
choice of desktop interface.
ReactOS
Unlike most of the other operating systems on this list, ReactOS isn't a version of Linux or BSD;
instead, it's a completely new free OS designed to be Windows-compatible. At this point, it's still
an alpha release, but it shows promise.

Debian
WHAT is Debian?
The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a Free
operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian.
An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the
core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the
computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.

What is the Fedora Project?
The Fedora Project is a partnership of free software community members from around the globe.
The Fedora Project builds open source software communities and produces a Linux distribution
called “Fedora.”
Our Mission
The Fedora Project's mission is to lead the advancement of free and open source software and
content as a collaborative community.
Elements of Fedora's Mission
The three elements of this mission are clear:

our community.
Centos
The CentOS Linux distribution is a stable, predictable, manageable and reproduceable platform
derived from the sources of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). We are now looking to expand on
that by creating the resources needed by other communities to come together and be able to build
on the CentOS Linux platform. And today we start the process by delivering a clear governance
model, increased transparency and access. In the coming weeks we aim to publish our own road
map that includes variants of the core CentOS Linux.
Since March 2004, CentOS Linux has been a community-supported distribution derived from
sources freely provided to the public by Red Hat. As such, CentOS Linux aims to be functionally
compatible with RHEL. We mainly change packages to remove upstream vendor branding and
artwork. CentOS Linux is no-cost and free to redistribute .
CentOS Linux is developed by a small but growing team of core developers. In turn the core
developers are supported by an active user community including system administrators, network
administrators, managers, core Linux contributors, and Linux enthusiasts from around the world.

An Inspiration To Amateur Radio: Five Reasons Why Its Still Relevant!
Isn’t amateur radio “old-fashioned”?
Most amateur radio operators are very much in tune with today’s “hi tech” world and tend to be
“early adopters” of emerging technologies. A lot of hams work in hi tech. For example the Finnish
cellphone giant Nokia recruits a large part of its workforce from the local ham radio community.
