Installing the Device Drivers
Windows Me & Windows XP Driver Installation
Driver installation is optional for Windows Me, and Windows XP. Simply
connect the Adaptec Media Reader to the system and the system will go
through a sequence of installation processes by itself. When it is ready,
you can access the reader by clicking the “Removable Disk” icon in “My
Computer”.
However, if you install the driver from the CD, the four multi-format
slots of the reader will be clearly marked as CF (for CompactFlash), MS
(for Memory Stick), SD (for Secure Digital), and SM (for SmartMedia).
Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 Driver Installation
Please make sure you install the device driver before connecting the
Adaptec Media Reader hardware to your computer. The screenshots
shown below are from Windows 98SE; however, the steps apply to all
Windows operating systems except step #5 for Windows Me and
Windows XP users.
To install the device drivers:
1 Insert the Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. The Installation
Wizard opens automatically. If it doesn’t, use Windows Explorer to
display the CD contents, then click autorun.exe.
2 In the Installation Wizard screen, click “Installation Software”.
5
3 Select your preferred language for the setup and click “Next”.
4 Click “Next” in the next screen.
6
5 Make sure both boxes are checked then click “Next”.
6 When the installation is complete, select “Yes, I want to restart my
computer now”, and then click “Finish”.
Now you are ready to install your Adaptec Media Reader hardware
which will be explained in the next section.
7
Installing Your Adaptec Media Reader
If you want to mount the Adaptec Media Reader in one of the available 3.5”
drive bays, please follow the instructions in “Mounting Your AUA-7500A for
Internal Use” below; otherwise, you can advance to page 10 “Connecting
Your AUA-7500A for External Use”.
Mounting Your AUA-7500A for Internal Use
To install your Adaptec Media Reader:
1. Turn off power to the computer and disconnect the power cord.
2. Open the computer cabinet, following the manufacturer’s
instructions.
Caution: Discharge any static electricity build-up by
touching a grounded metal object (such as the exposed
metal parts on the back of your computer).
3. Prepare the drive bay for the installation of a new drive, following
your computer manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Hold the Adaptec Media Reader by its sides, top side up, and insert
it into the drive bay, aligning the screw holes on the side of the
Media Reader with the mounting holes of the drive bay.
5. Secure the Adaptec Media Reader in the drive bay, using the
screws provided.
Caution: Secure both sides of the Adaptec Media Reader,
using all four screws. Securing only one side may cause
the device to warp and fail.
6. Connect the USB cable to an internal USB port, following your
computer manufacturer’s instructions, or the instructions that came
with your USB host adapter.
Note: If you don’t have an internal USB port or a USB
terminal on your motherboard, Adaptec recommends
the Adaptec USB2Connect AUA-5100 PCI USB 2.0 host
adapter.
8
If you want to connect to a 5-pin USB terminal available on your
motherboard, you can use the adapter cable (shown below left).

Close your computer cabinet and reattach the power cord, then
power on your computer. When your computer restarts, the
system will go through a sequence of installation processes by
itself. When installation is complete, you can begin using your
Adaptec Media Reader. See “Inserting and Removing Memory
Cards” on page 11 for more information.
9
Connecting Your AUA-7500A for External Use
1.
When the system is up and running, you can simply plug your
Adaptec Media Reader to any available USB port either on your
motherboard or from an add-on card (PCI or PCMCIA).
Note: Adaptec Media Reader is an USB 2.0 device that is
compatible to USB 1.1 and USB 1.0. For USB 2.0
performance; however, a USB 2.0 port is required.
2.
If this is your very first time connecting the Adaptec Media
Reader to the system, the system will go through a sequence of
installation processes. After the installation is complete, you can
begin using your Adaptec Media Reader. See “Inserting and
Removing Memory Cards” on page 11 for more information.
10

ƒ
ƒ
ƒ
Mini-SD: Insert the card into the LEFT edge of the slot with the
pins facing up.
SmartMedia (SM): Insert the card with the pins facing up.
T-Flash: An adapter is required. Insert it with the top facing up.
11
To remove a memory card:
1 Ensure that no files on the card are being used or copied.
Caution: To avoid losing data, don’t remove the memory
card while files on the card are in use.
2 Open My Computer and right-click the drive icon for the memory
card you want to remove.
3 Click Eject.
4 Allow at least 30 seconds for the Memory Card LED to go out and for
any delayed writes to be completed. Then, pull the memory card from
its slot.
A Note for Microdrive Users
Microdrives require more power than other memory cards. When using a
Microdrive, remove other memory cards from the Media Reader to avoid
data loss or other errors.
