Black Box | LB1351A | January 2007 - Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers

January 2007
Note from the Newsletter Editor: Please note the change in time for this meeting.
Date:
Time:
Place:
January 19, 2007
7:00 PM (Auction plants will be accepted after 4:30 PM and until 7:00 PM)
The San Mateo Garden Center, 605 Parkside Way, San Mateo
Take the Alameda de las Pulgas exit off Highway 92. Turn south.
The Garden Center is located between 26th and 28th Avenues.
Program:
The program this month will consist of our annual Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers (GCCG)
Auction of cymbidiums for collectors. This is an extremely important fund-raising event for
GCCG, since a large part of our yearly income depends on its success. We are extremely
fortunate to have Jeff 'keep your hand up' Trimble as our auctioneer.
There are three ways for you to contribute to the success of this event - as a donor, seller
and/or as a buyer.
Donor: The Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers club would appreciate any plant donations that
you would like to make to ensure the continued success of our organization. Just bring your
donation plant(s) to the January 19 meeting. After being tested for Tobacco Mosaic Virus
(TMV), these plants will be auctioned during the meeting.
Seller: You may bring in up to 10 plants or related orchid items for sale, with 25% of the
sale price benefiting GCCG and 75% going to the seller. For those selling, it would also be
appreciated if you would donate at least one additional plant to the society.
Buyer: An auction buyer wins in two ways. First, you add one or more quality plants to your
collection. Second, you have the satisfaction in knowing that the portion of your winning bid
that goes to Gold Coast will help support your club.
As this newsletter is going to print, we have already received generous donations and
promises of donations of quality plants from members and commercial growers. Plants
purchased for the auction and plant donations received to date are listed below.
Thanks to those of you who provided lists for your auction donations. All donated plants will
be tested for the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) free of charge – so those bidding on the
plants will not need to worry about introducing any problems into their private collections.
There is still time to bring in a plant (or two) for the January auction. If every member
brought in just one plant, we would have an awesome time at our auction.
Plant Table:
The club will not have a plant opportunity table this month due to the auction.
Board Meeting: The board meeting will be held at 5:00 pm at the San Mateo Garden Center due to the
preparations required for the auction. Contact Jeff Trimble at 650-368-8260 if you cannot
attend the meeting.
Dinner with the Speaker: Since this is our annual auction, there will be no dinner with the speaker.
Plant Sales:
There will be no sales table this month due to the auction. If you wish to sell plants through
the auction format, remember that 25% of the proceeds go to the club.
Virus Testing: Due to the auction, testing of plants for TMV will be limited to auction plants only this month.
Samples for our normal TMV testing may be brought to the February meeting.
ICU:
There will be no ICU at this meeting due to the auction.
Plant Stakes: A limited number of natural bamboo 3-foot plant stakes (at $2 for 20 stakes), and 4-foot plant
stakes (at $3 for 20 stakes) will be available for purchase prior to the start of the auction.
There will be no sales once the auction begins.
Refreshments for the January Meeting: There will be no raffle this month, so remember to pick up your
free raffle ticket at the February meeting. Please ensure that all items are labeled with the
name of the provider so that Tony can record the names for the next newsletter and
provide the 5 Free raffle tickets prior to the February draw.
Thank You for Refreshments at the November meeting:.

Membership: Welcome to new lifetime member, George Hatfield, who joined at the November meeting
when he was our featured speaker.
The GCCG Membership list for 2006-2007 is enclosed with this newsletter. Please check
your entry for accuracy and report any errors to the Membership Chair, Ken Bruland, at 209
Seaborg Place, Santa Cruz, 95060, 831-427-1450 or bruland@ucsc.edu.
CSA Membership: Members are strongly encouraged to join the Cymbidium Society of America. The CSA
is the parent organization of the GCCG and provides liability insurance for GCCG events.
You can contact Ken Jacobsen at any of the GCCG meetings for CSA membership
information or you can contact the CSA membership secretary, Jose Rodriguez, at
916-927-1810, by mail at 3150 Prince Henry Drive, Sacramento, CA, 95833, or by email at
jose.j.rodriguez@usace.army.mil. Dues are $30.00 per year and include a subscription to the
CSA Journal. You can also visit the CSA website at http://www.cymbidium.org.
Thoughts From the President: We are having our annual auction this year on January 19th. This is not only
the biggest moneymaker for our club, it’s the best way to get quality plants that are not
always available to the general public. Last year some outstanding plants were auctioned
off. Hopefully this year will be as good or better!
We will also be having a display at the San Francisco Orchid show in February. The display
committee will be tapping your shoulder for plants for display. Please help!
33rd Annual Cymbidium Congress: In conjunction with the Santa Barbara Orchid Show, the CSA
Congress will be held on March 17, starting with the CSA Annual meeting at 8:30 AM, and
following with lectures, luncheon and dinner banquet. Contact the CSA website
(http://www.cymbidium.org) or the Congress chairperson, Lucia Brandt, at 310-826-9904.
The scheduled lectures will be posted on the CSA web site as soon as all the speakers are
confirmed.
Full Registration to the Congress includes invitation to the Friday night show party and
unlimited entry to the SBOS show.
GCCG Show: The co-chairs for our April GCCG show are Audrey Young Tarter and Ken Bruland. They
will be asking many of you for help organizing the show, and ensuring all those little tasks
are done that help make a show successful. If you would like to help, please contact either
Audrey or Ken. If either Audrey or Ken asks for your help, please remember that every little
bit of extra help will make the show more successful!
Plant Judging: The CSA judges Cymbidiums, Paphiopedilums, and Phragmipediums at the Lakeside
Garden Center in Oakland on the fourth Wednesday of each month except November and
December, when it is on the third Wednesday. To have a plant judged, call Jeff Trimble at
650-368-8260 at least one day in advance, to ensure that the CSA judges know that plants
will be submitted for judging. Plant entry is between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM the evening of
judging. If you cannot travel to Oakland, Jeff will arrange for plant transportation. Clerks can
advise you in filling out the plant entry form.
If you have a plant that will be ready for judging at one of our GCCG meetings, but which
wouldn't be at its prime on the fourth Wednesday of the month, please contact Jeff Trimble
at least 24 hours prior to our meeting. He will attempt to arrange with the CSA judges to
have the plant judged before the beginning of our regular meeting.
The AOS judges all genera of orchids in San Francisco at the SF County Fair Building (Hall
of Flowers) in Golden Gate Park on the first Tuesday, and in Oakland at the Lakeside
Garden Center on the third Monday, of each month. For either judging, plants need to be
submitted to the clerks between 6:15 PM and 7:00 PM. If you need help in transportation,
call Ken Jacobsen at 650-508-8308.
CSA and/or AOS judging takes place at most of the local shows. Contact the show
organizers for specifics regarding plant entry for judging.
Recent Judging Results: At the California Sierra Nevada AOS Judging on Nov. 1, Paphiopedilum Dollgoldi
'Cascade', (Paph. rothschildianum x Paph. armeniacum), received an AM of 80 points,

January 2007 Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers Auction
Please place a label on each item you are bringing to the auction. Make it large enough to be
easily read.
For plant auction items, four pieces of information are requested on the label:
1. The auction lot number, as listed in the table below.
2. The plant name (and parents).
3. The plant ID, as listed in the table below to the right of the Name/Description.
4. The minimum bid for the plant (if any).
For auction items that are not plants, put the auction lot number on the label.
Having these labels prepared and attached to the auction items before you arrive at the Garden
Center will greatly expedite the check-in process. The labels will make the auctioneer's job easier
as well.
Abbreviations: BB=Sprouted Back Bulb; MP=Division of Mother Plant; MS=Meristem (or
Mericlone)
The ID column indicates who supplied the plants. AA indicates the initials of the supplier. These are:
Tom Bailey (TB), Ken Bruland (KB), Gloria Bygdnes (GB), Weegie Caughlan (WC), Anna Chai (AC), Greg
Corrales (GC), Kevin Daly (KD), Heather Drobus (HD), Ed Dumaguin (ED), Trudy Hadler (TH), Ken
Jacobsen (KJ), Carl Jukkola (CJ), Eanghak Quach (EQ), Audrey Young Tarter (AT), Top Hat (Top Hat),
Jeff Trimble (JT), Judy Wilson (JW), Darrel Wong (DW), Barry Zimmerman (BZ).
An ID of AANN indicates a sale plant. An ID of D-AA indicates a donated plant. GCCG is the ID for
plants purchased by the club.
