1. What is an Aztech In-Home Display? An Aztech In‐Home Display (IHD) is a small clock‐sized appliance that communicates wirelessly with electricity Smart meters to display cost and usage information for the entire home. It combines an easy‐to‐view graphical display with a colored light arc that shows, at a glance, how much electricity you are using. Light moves along the light arc at a speed corresponding to the rate of electricity consumption. These devices are also sometimes called Energy Information Display (EID) or Consumer Information Display (CID). 2. Who are the users of the Aztech In-Home Display? The Aztech In‐Home Display is for home residents and business owners who want to monitor and control their electricity costs. For maximum benefit, it should be placed in a visible location in the business or home – like a kitchen, family room, and staff room or reception area. 3. Why should utilities or residents consider the Aztech In-Home Display? The Aztech In‐Home Display with its LCD display and patented light arc provides both background ‘wallpaper’ presence with ‘alarm clock alert’ awareness about your energy use. Your electricity consumption will be easily seen and understood. Studies have shown that an in‐home display will save a user 7% to 15% on their electricity bill. The Aztech IHD empowers people to reduce their electricity bill and their carbon footprint. 4. How does the Aztech In-Home Display help reduce energy usage? The Aztech In‐Home Display shows hourly, daily, and monthly usage patterns and electricity costs. It also gives you immediate feedback about how much electricity is being used at any given time. This information enables families to see what activities use more energy and change their usage behaviors to ones that enable them to gain and stay in control of their energy use and costs. 5. How does the Aztech In-Home Display fit in with utility conservation programs? The Aztech In‐Home display compliments nearly all utility conservation programs. 1. Do I need a certain type of Meter to use the Aztech In-Home Display? You need a ZigBee Enabled Smart meter. 2. What is ZigBee? ZigBee is a name given to a set of wireless communication standards that define how devices can talk together over short distances for special applications like home control and Smart meter reading. It is similar to Wi‐Fi and Bluetooth but is not directly compatible. 3. How does the Aztech In-Home Display receive updates from my Smart meter? The IHD contains a radio transceiver that communicates wirelessly with the Smart meter. After you have setup the IHD on the metering network, you will receive updates approximately every 30 seconds. 4. Must I stay within a certain range from the Smart meter location? If you are have difficulty receiving energy use information on the IHD try moving it closer to the Smart meter to establish a good connection. 5. How do I turn ON and OFF the Aztech In-Home Display? The display turns ON automatically by attaching a powered AC adapter, or by pressing the middle (√) bu on. The display can be powered OFF by using the middle (√) bu on. 6. How do I Setup the In-Home Display myself? Simply plug in the supplied AC adapter and connect it to the Aztech In‐Home Display. A new IHD will ask for language choice (English, Spanish or French). Once you have entered your language preference, the main menu will be displayed. Select Exit to ready the Aztech In‐Home Display for connection to the Smart meter. If the In‐Home Display has already been setup with your utility, it will connect to the meter in a few minutes. If the IHD has not already been setup, this can be done by contacting your participating utilities via phone or web portal. 7. Can Electricity rates be displayed by the In-Home Display? Yes they can, provided your utility supports this functionality. 8. Can I turn off the light arc? Although the light arc provides pertinent information, it can be turned off via the Preferences menu. 9. How do I access the Preferences menus? Press and Hold the (►) button on the right, then press the middle (√) bu on to get to the Preferences menu. 10. How do I use the buttons? The (▲) on the left and the (►) button on the right navigate most of the usual screens. The (►) Copyright 2012 Aztech Associates Inc. Contact us at Page 2 of 3 button selects the Main, History or Summary views. In each view, the (▲) button provides more information. The center (√) bu on o en is used to make a selec on. It is also to turn the IHD ON and OFF. 11. Can I have more than one In-Home Display in my home working at the same time? Yes, you may have several working at the same time if you wish. It should be noted that displays connected to the same Smart meter may display slightly different information, due to a number of differentials. For example, no two IHDs will be turned on at exactly the same time, so the information collection timing will vary between the IHDs. 12. How long will the IHD work on battery backup power? The batteries will last approximately 2 hours if the batteries are fully charged when used. When operating on battery power, the light arc and LCD backlight will automatically turn off to conserve power. They will turn back on momentarily when a button is pressed. Batteries should only be used for temporary portable operation or to maintain IHD data during a power outage, and should therefore last three years under normal use. 13. Can I replace the In-Home Display batteries myself? Yes, the batteries are accessed by removing the four screws on the back of the enclosure. They should be replaced with an 800mAh NiMH battery pack. 14. Does the Aztech In-Home Display retain the date and time when powered down? IHD date and time information come from the metering network, and will automatically refresh when the device is turned on (in the same way that time and date are refreshed when you turn your computer on). Integration and Compatibility
1. What are the system requirements for the In-Home Display?
A ZigBee enabled Smart meter on the residence and a place to plug the AC adapter in are all that is needed. 2. How do I view the actual complete Smart meter reading? Simply Press and Hold the (►) button and select the appropriate menu option. You will then view the meter reading as displayed on the Smart meter. Pressing the (►) button again will return the display back to the Main view. 3. If utility rates change how do I update the In-Home Display? If price change functionality is supported by your utility you do not need to do anything. The rates will update automatically on your IHD. 4. Can I synchronize my Utility Bill and the IHD? All cost estimates are for informational and educational purposes only. Although you may get a close estimate of your bill if you reset the Summary view to the date of your electricity bill. There is no direct connection between the Aztech In‐Home Display and the utility’s billing system, the IHD communicates only with the Smart meter and doesn’t calculate utility charges.
