WB Cavity Barrier
Introducing the Envirograf® Cavity Barrier product range
According to Document B of the UK Building
Regulations fire barriers must be installed
in cavity areas that are vulnerable to the
spread of fire. Using the correct passive fire
cavity protection system within a building is
crucial, in the event of a fire, intumescent fire
barriers activate and seal holes, penetrations
and cavities, preventing the spread of fire and
smoke, thereby fulfilling UK regulations.
However, other regulations may also have to be
satisfied concerning cavity barrier specifications. For
example, Document C may require the cavity area to
allow a free flow of air reducing condensation whilst
also offering fire protection. Documents L1B and L2B
may require certain cavity areas to offer thermal and
fire protection simultaneously. Envirograf have now
designed a series of flexible fire protection cavity
barriers that fully satisfies all of these cavity protection
requirements. There are six types of cavity barriers
commonly required for sealing concealed spaces and
cavities:

Standards and approvals
Building Regulations
Section 6 of Document B of the Building Regulations
states:
6.1 Concealed spaces or cavities in the construction
of a building provide a ready route for smoke and
flame spread e.g. in walls, floors, ceilings and roofs.
As any spread is concealed, it presents a greater
danger than would a more obvious weakness in the
fabric of the building.
Standards and Regulations also stipulate that two
storey buildings and above require cavity barriers
to stop fire from spreading through walls, floors and
cavities.
The Envirograf® Cavity Barrier range fully satisfies
the requirements stated in Document B of the
Building Regulations.
The Envirograf Cavity Barrier range has been tested
according to the principles of BS EN1363-1 1999
achieving up to 132 minutes.

This could happen to you:
In 2009 a Hotel in Beijing, which was a part of CCTV Television Station complex went up in flames on
Lantern Festival. People launched fireworks from the roof tops without permits, which caught the building
on fire. Because the building was still under construction, no fireproofing was installed , which resulted in
fire spreading quickly through the cavity, with insulation material fuelling the flames.

WB Cavity Barrier
A flexible foiled barrier ( WB & VWB ) designed to fix across into inner and outer
course of brick to block or block to block, held in the mortar joint.

A barrier for use horizontally, is a robust, reinforced foil clad barrier, will not transfer
moisture. With intumescent coated membrane on a flexible wire mesh, can be bent
if required.
A powerful intumescent insulating material that will expand in a fire forming a
complete barrier from fire and smoke. You can install insulating materials under or
on top of the barrier.
VWB Cavity Barrier
This is the same barrier but with ventilation and moisture holes which house a water
resistant, rubberised intumescent material which expands in a fire sealing off all
holes.

VWB can have 1,2, or 3 rows of holes according to the width of the barrier.

VWBS Cavity Barriers
FIRE TEST PERFORMANCE
Design details
The WBS Cavity Barrier is a flexible fire proof sponge which is fixed in a
horizontal or vertical position in a brick/block cavity. The WBS has unique
self spring properties and is fixed into the cavity by simply pressing the
seal into place. The barrier must always be made 10mm wider than the
cavity.

Cavity Barrier with Rodent Protection
The VWB/M cavity barrier is designed for the bottom edge cavity of timber
framed buildings outer cladding sections. The VWB/M is used to stop fire
penetration getting behind the boards and wall face. Comprising galvanised
12mm mesh foiled with 2mm Envirograf® multigraf intumescent, finished in
a tough PVC coating, (the coating can be black, brown, red or white).
Non-ventilated option - block and timber cavity
The VWB/M includes a series of ventilation holes 10mm dia either in one or
two rows allowing for both air flow and moisture release. The VWB/M also
offers protection from rodents getting into the cavity. Supplied in 1 metre
lengths with standard sizes of 80mm, 100mm, 120mm. Other widths made.

RS/WB Cavity Barriers
Rainscreen Barrier
This barrier comes in 3 types, giving complete fire and smoke sealing. A lightweight
barrier to lay over and under all types of insulation materials. They are made of the
same materials as WB and VWB Range.

Are made to suit a cavity up to 250mm. They have a 30mm up stand on the back
edge with metal washers for screw or nail fixing to concrete, brick, block, cement
board, etc.
The barrier contains intumescent-coated cloth on a galvanised mesh 1.5mm x
1mm hole size. Then covered in reinforced craft paper which is impregnated with a
Envirograf® Fire Proof Adhesive.
Lightweight, clean, easy to handle. Can be bent to shape or bent over without
harming the integrity. Ventilation holes have intumescent strip to seal in a fire.
RS/WB/W Cavity also stops smoke penetration.
RS/WB/B | RS/VWB/B | RS/WB/CV/B
This is a similar barrier as RS/WB/W Range, but can be made up to 400mm wide.
This version has the same 30mm up stand at the back and has supporting L-shape
metals to support the barrier. These brackets have holes for screw or nail fixing.
Ÿ The RS Range can be fitted vertically or horizontally
Ÿ Be placed over insulation material or have insulation material placed on top
in horizontal position. The vertical barrier can be placed between the insulation

Documents L1B and L2B offer clear guidance on the design for energy
efficient buildings. Document BRE 262 details the required recommendations
for thermal insulation installation for cavity barrier areas that helps
to satisfy these obligations.

The Envirograf Thermal Cavity Barrier is an ideal solution where both fire
and thermal protection is required, particularly in cavities around window
and door apertures. The barrier is waterproof and completely moisture
resistant and offers over 1 hour fire protection, as well as creating an
effective thermal barrier between the cavity and window/door frame section.

The TCB Cavity Barrier comprises of a flexible fire
proof sponge fixed to a thin foil faced intumescent
strip. The system is completely moisture resistant.

Moisture and smoke cavity barrier

The WB Cavity Barrier can also be supplied as a self draining and air flow system ( VWBG ). Tubes are fixed into the barrier
unit that are then set into the mortar allowing all moisture to drain to the external area, whilst also allowing a free air flow into
the cavity area.
This cavity barrier was designed as Building Control wanted ventilation in the cavity to include moisture release, but also wanted
a smoke seal within the cavity.
So our plain WB or RS/WB/W barrier which gives a complete smoke seal was manufactured with a tube with rubber grommets,
which can be placed through the course in between the brick and block mortar. This can also be used with aluminium rainscreen
by drilling a hole in the aluminium to allow the tube to go through - drilled hole size approx. 10mm.

Where large open areas are required for ventilation
Modular building schemes are now a popular construction method used
throughout the UK and Europe. Steel frame structures clad externally with
various materials offer fast and economical design solutions within the
construction industry. Also timber framed buildings with external cladding
in brick, block, wood and tiling.
Fire proofing cavities remains equally crucial in maintaining the overall
fabric and safety of these buildings and Envirograf® have designed a unique
fire seal for the purpose of cavity sealing when required for external clad
buildings.
The Envirograf® flexible strip range barrier is a thin flexible PVC & foiled
clad intumescent material with a self adhesive backing tape for adhering
to the wall, additional fixing can be done by using staples, nails or screws.
The seals can be cut to any length with a joint sleeve supplied for sealing
off the ends. A strip form of high expansion intumescent with medium
pressure to lock against the internal side of the external wall in a fire giving
full fire protection without affecting the outer wall. A quick and easy method
of application and fixing. The strips are in a blue plastic sleeving robust
enough to stop any damage by water or insect/animals or when fixing. Can
be sleeved in other colours (White, Black or Red).
Being flexible they can be used on curved surfaces and profiled surfaces.

APPLICATION
Peel off paper from double sided tape. This tape has been
developed to ensure good adhesion to most products. The
strip can then be permanently fixed with staples, large head
nails or screws; fixings approximately 300mm apart.

CV75/10 Strip
CV strip for cavities up to 70mm does not require any
brackets, as the expanding intumescent is self supporting
in the event of a fire. For larger cavity gaps CV30/10 or
CV30/15 is supplied with brackets for extra supports.

The use of timber framing in building design has now
become one of the most common forms of construction.
Building Regulations clearly outline fire protection
measures designed to prevent fire and its spread for timber
construction, but as shown in a recent article, published by
Fire safety Engineering, two advisory groups have issued
urgent warnings to government concerning fire safety
in timber framed buildings.
Envirograf® have responded to these issues by designing
a series of intumescent products especially designed for
timber framed buildings. All the products in this range
have been tested according to the appropriate fire test
requirements in fully accredited test houses in the UK and
Europe, and offer excellent fire ratings, fully satisfying UK
Building & European Regulations.

Party Floor Sections (Product 55)
Party floors (loadbearing and non loadbearing) are floors that
separate compartments. Timber party floors are required to
offer fire resistance from below and should offer the same fire
rating as the connected walls.
It is crucial that the correct passive fire cavity barrier is fitted
and located in the correct position.
The Envirograf® FB/TS Cavity Barrier (Product 55) is
probably one of the simplest cavity seals to install in these
areas, and because it has a protective outer sleeve offers full
condensation protection and 123 minutes fire rating.

Party Wall Sections (Product 55)
Party walls (loadbearing and non loadbearing) are walls
that act as separating or compartment walls. All of these
wall types are required to offer a fire resistance rating,
dependent upon the building design, type and how many
floors it has. At the party wall juncture there will be cavity
areas and it is crucial that the correct passive fire cavity
barrier is fitted and located in the correct position. These
barriers are required to offer moisture and condensation
resistance. The Envirograf FB/TS is a non-fibrous sponge
faced with an intumescent strip and covered in an outer
protective sleeve offering full condensation protection and
123 minutes fire protection. The FB/TS is simply fixed into
position with a high-tack self adhesive tape supplied on the
fixing side.

Roof Sections (Product 55)
Building design requirements and their respective fire
resistance ratings are no different for timber framed
buildings compared to other building types as detailed in the
Building Regulation Documents. There are no fire resistant
ratings required for roof areas unless they are used as an
occupied space. If the roof area is to be used as habitable
accommodation, the floor and wall should have the same
fire resistance as the respective walls and ceilings as
specified by the Building Regulations.
The design detailing should include a cavity barrier at the
top section of the party wall, maintaining its fire resistance
into the roof space.
Soffit ventilation grilles offer a fire rating, that prevents fire
from spreading into the roof void.
Soffit boards can be fire rated using one of the Envirograf®
Fire Protection Coatings - please see data sheet or call our
Technical Department - 01304 842 555.

FIRE-STOPPING ROOF DIVIDER FOR USE IN TERRACED OR SEMI-DETACHED HOUSES
● This product comprises of Envirograf® fireproof sponge with an intumescent
coating, covered in a red PVC material which is completely waterproof. Product
references: FB/TS and FB/TS/TB.
● In a fire, it seals off one roof from the next, because of its highly-effective
intumescent coating material, which expands in all directions to close any gaps
and stop fire penetrating.
● Lays flat onto the party wall (brick, block, or timber) or on top of the roofing felt.
● Standard sizes available: 1m length; 25mm, 40mm, and 50mm thickness;
40mm and 50mm width (other sizes made quickly to order).
● Can be compressed to 50% of its original thickness (e.g. 50mm thickness can
be compressed down to 25mm thickness).
● Quick and easy to fit, thanks to its double-sided self-adhesive backing tape for
adhering into place.
● Can be cut to length with a sharp knife.
● It contains no harmful fibres or other harmful materials, so it is completely safe
to handle.
● In a fire, the product does not give off any toxic fumes.

Description
Intumescent metal ventilation grilles to fit new or to replace plastic
ventilation grilles, designed to prevent external flames and hot gases
from entering the roof space and spreading fire.
Product 89 came to life as a response to a tragic incident, in which a
family of 4 was killed. During the accident the fire originating from the
kitchen made its way through the open window, melted the plastic
soffit vents and ignited the roof felt, which in turn engulfed the rest
of the building in fire and smoke. Ever since, thousands of houses in
Norway and Sweden have adopted Product 89 as a part of their fire
protection systems.
Use
Envirograf® soffit board ventilators are circular or rectangular grilles
containing intumescent material that seals the vent openings in
the event of a fire, to protect the roof space from flames and hot
gases that may enter
from broken or open
windows etc below
the soffit board.
Otherwise,
flames
could burn through plastic soffit vents and
enter the roof space, catching the roof felt
alight and spreading the fire to loft rooms
in use as bedrooms or play rooms. This
Envirograf® product is absolutely essential in
loft conversions and for use over windows in the dining room, kitchen, and lounge areas.
Performance
This product underwent a fire resistance test employing the general principles and criteria of
BS476 Part 22 (1987), achieving an integrity of 66 minutes.

A fireproof sponge that emits no toxic fumes and is incombustible. Supplied in standard strips and sheets (see price list). Other

Use
The fireproof sponge can be used under roofing sheets, between walls and floors, or as packing around small openings (such

This product is economical and it can be fitted
quickly and easily by one or two people, working
inside the roof space.
Adhesive, fixing battens, FB70 barrier cloth, and
fire-proof sponge are supplied for easy fixing.
Performance
Recent tests undertaken on this product have
indicated that unprotected roofs collapse in 39
minutes, whereas the FB70 fire protection barrier
curtain has been tested to 81 minutes integrity,
holding back the fire from the adjoining roofs, thus
giving valuable time to allow the fire department
to arrive on site.

Peterborough’s new, £5million staff accommodation project,

Eagle House, 161 City Road, London
Art Deco inspired development designed by award-winning
urban architects, Terry Farrell & Partners.
The Eagle House is a 26 storey building, in the heart of buzzing
Shoreditch. It has 206 private apartments, shops,café and
residents only spa and cinema.
The specification included approx 6000m2 of beautiful natural
Moleanos Limestone used as elevation cladding. To prevent
hidden spread of fire through the cavities which have been
created by the curtain wall, Envirograf® RSM cavity barrier was
specified.
