Introduction
APPLICATIONS
Altech metal separation systems are Inductive
Proximity Ring and Flat Sensors, that are used to
detect punched or stamped parts, and unwanted
metals. They are used in a wide range of industries
that require metal parts to be detected, counted,
and in many cases to be separated from bulk
materials like food and grain. This product offering
represents one of the largest selections in the
industry.
Both ring and flat sensors are solid-state devices
that generate an output signal when metal objects
are either inside or entering into the sensing area
from any direction. No physical contact is required
or desired. These sensors work best with ferrous
metals but will also operate with non-ferrous metals
at reduced sensitivity. The sensitivity of our metal
detection systems is specified in terms of a steel
ball minimum diameter for detection. For
non-ferrous metals, the metal diameter must be
increased. Please see below:

Altech metal detection systems have no moving
parts, are extremely reliable, and require no
maintenance. They typically interface with
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), process
and personnel computers with appropriate
hardware and software. They can control relays,
solenoids, valves, etc., up to their maximum output
current.
These sensors are manufactured in Germany by
Pulsotronic, a well-known and respected quality
manufacturer. Sensors are ISO 9001 certified and all
products carry the CE mark. Altech is Pulsotronic’s
North American marketing partner.
RING SENSORS
Mini and Normal Sensitivity Ring Sensors are used
to detect stamped or punched metal parts, or larger
size unwanted metal parts. Altech offers a wide
range of these rings from 12 mm to 300 mm in
diameter. High sensitivity rings are also used for the
same applications, except they can detect much
smaller metal parts. Altech’s Ultra High Sensitivity
Ring Sensors are used primarily for the detection of
very small particles in bulk materials.

FLAT SENSORS
Flat Sensors are used on conveyor belts and chutes
to detect metallic impurities in the material being
handled. These sensors are available in different
sizes which can be put together to create the
required width of detection. Special amplifiers are
required to evaluate the signal from flat sensors.
These sensors can be installed above and below
the material being handled. Higher sensitivity can
be achieved in this manner.

• Plastic and rubber regrind

• Semi-finished and finished products

Principles of Operation
Ring and flat sensors consist of a coil with a ferrite core, an oscillator, a demodulator, a signal analyzer,
and a switching amplifier. Please see below:

Demodulator
The oscillator generates a high frequency
electromagnetic alternating field in the coil. The
ferrite core and the housing ensure that the field
lines of this alternating signal are concentrated in
the middle of the ring, or adjacent to the top of the
flat sensor. When a metal particle passes through
this field, eddy currents are induced and the field
losses energy, thus damping the oscillator. The
extent of the damping reflects the size of the metal

particle. The reduced signal is registered by the
signal analyzer, and when a dampening threshold
is reached, the switching amplifier provides an
output signal. Ring sensors with normal sensitivities
deliver a stable output while the target is in the ring
or within range of the flat sensor. High sensitivity,
ultra high sensitivity rings and flat sensors deliver a
short output pulse when metal is detected.

RING STYLE INDUCTiVE
PROXIMITY SENSORS
Altech Ring Sensors are used for a
variety of applications including
punching and stamping operations
to detect small metal parts and for
the identification of metallic
contamination in bulk materials.
The sensitivity of all Altech Ring
Sensors is given in terms of a steel
metal ball diameter. This is the
minimum diameter steel ball that the
sensor will detect. Non-ferrous
materials will require larger diameter
parts for correct sensor detection.

These sensors operate with an external
control unit, which is included with the
sensors. The control unit operates with
power at 230VAC or can be ordered to
operate at 115VAC. When used for detecting
metal in bulk materials, the speed and
volume of the bulk material must be
controlled within specifications. The
minimum rate of fall is 3cm per second, and
maximum is specified by the maximum
height the bulk material can be dropped,
600mm. The maximum throughput is a
function of the speed and the ring opening
sizes.

Electronics Control Unit
The Electronics Control Unit supplied with
each Ultra High Sensitivity Ring Sensor is
available at 115 VAC or 230 VAC input and
performs all of the necessary functions for the
metal detector system. The ring sensor can be
ordered with the control unit attached to the
sensor or wall mounted. The control unit is
410x210x380 mm and meets IP65 protection
standards. An operating and installation

upper layer and only narrow sensors for
the bottom layer, or vice versa.
In this case, the sensors can be lined up over any width.
However, it must be noted that a distance of at least 600
mm must be maintained between identical sensors 2.x.
Modules 1F1 to 1F4 can be used.
Flat sensors are flat metal detectors used on
conveyor belts and chutes to detect metallic
impurities in the material being handled.
Flexible System
Flat sensors are available in three different sizes, all
of which can be lined up with one another. This
makes it a simple matter to create the required
detector width from three standard elements. The
width can also be changed at a later date when
using this system. Switching amplifiers are used to
evaluate the signal from flat sensors.
Sandwich
Flat sensors can also be installed above and below
the material being handled. Higher sensitivity can
be achieved in this way.
Form
Flat sensors are designed to engage with the
neighboring modules. This ensures that all the
modules lined up in series have the same sensitivity.
Rules for Lining Up Adjacent Flat Sensors
The following points must be noted in order to avoid
faults due to combining identical flat sensors:
a) A distance of at least 300 mm must be
maintained between sensors with the same
module number.
b) Flat sensors of different types can be lined up
regardless of frequency.
c) In sandwich constructions, a minimum height of
40 mm must be maintained between the upper
and lower sensors.
Rules for Sandwich Construction
a) Flat sensors of the same housing type are
always used in pairs. The same module number
cannot be re-used within such a construction,

Large-Area DC Sensors
9869-0000/ 9869-0030
Large-Area are flat metal detectors. They are used on
conveyor belts and chutes to detect metallic impurities in
the material being handled. Damage, further along in the
process, to machines can be avoided this way. The
output signal is dynamic. A switching amplifier 81001930 or 8100-4030 is required to process the signal. The
large-area sensors 9869-0300 and 9869-0030 differ with
regard to their working frequency.

Analog Input Multi-Function
Switching Unit
The Multi-Function Amplifier Types 81002400 and 8100-2500 operate in
conjunction with either one of the Analog
sensors 9914-0800, 9914-1000, 99141133, 9814-2133, 9714-2000 or 97144300. It operates with customer supplied
DC voltage, 18-30V DC, and converts the
analog signal to three (3) different outputs
for the 8100-2400. The 8100-2500 has
one output, an 8 bit digital output.
The 8100-2500, 8-bit digital output divides
the analog voltage into 256 individual
increments which results in a resolution of
10µm/bit (.0004 in./bit). All outputs are
protected against short circuits, and the
unit is protected from Polarity reversal.

The Multi-Function Amplifier Types 81002100/2130 operates in conjunction with
either one of the analog sensors 9914-0800,
9414-0800, 9414-0900, 9914-1000, 98141133, 9814-2133, 9714-2000 or 9714-4300.
It contains a power supply for the sensor
voltage (24V DC) and converts the analog
signal of the sensors to four different outputs.
1. Analog voltage output:
0-10V DC, max 5mA.
2. Analog current output:
0-20mA, max. load resistance 500Ω.
3. Digital Output:
four bit, open collector, NPN,
"active low".
4. Relay Output:
3 relays for triggering point are built in
(change over contact, SPDT).

Switching capacity: 1100VA
The switching point of each relay can
be adjusted by a potentiometer and is
indicated by individual LED's.
Settings:
Three Relays with switching thresholds
can be chosen by means of three
integrated
potentiometers.

corresponding LED will light up.
In addition to Units 8100-2100 and 81002130, there are two Analog Modules
available to be mounted onto DIN/EN
mounting rails.
