Technical Applications
The Interfels Increx Mobile Extensometer
The INCREX system utilises electromagnetic induction
phenomenon and together with inclinometer casing facilitates
highly accurate measurements of ground movements in the
direction of the borehole axis.

Extension (and compression) of a borehole axis is commonly
measured by in-place multiple-point extensometers. INCREX
offers an interesting alternative. Its distinct advantages are high
accuracy and resolution measurement, multiple measuring
points and low running costs.
Measuring principle
The most commonly used INCREX casing is Interfels standard
Easy Connect (EC) ABS inclinometer casing, thus the borehole
can also be used for lateral displacement measurements by
means of mobile inclinometers. The system can be used in any
direction, horizontal or vertical, even in water filled boreholes.
INCREX consists of a mobile extensometer probe cabled to
a readout unit via a cable reel. The probe is fitted with two
high precision induction coils at its ends set at one metre
apart. Special metal rings are fitted to the outside of the ABS
inclinometer casing at one metre intervals and the space
between casing and borehole is grouted fully to bond the
casing and metal markers to the borehole wall.
Utilising setting rods and working bottom to top of the
borehole, the probe and its induction coils are accurately
positioned between pairs of metal markers in turn. At every
level, the induction between the coils and the metal markers
sends an electrical signal which is proportional to the distance
between each pair of metal markers.
System accuracy is independent of the borehole depth and
amounts to ± 0.02 mm at a measuring range of ± 20 mm.
For soft soils and highly fractured rock we recommend our
special measuring rings incorporated in a packer anchoring
system. The complete packer assembly is slid onto the
inclinometer casing and grouted in place by injection of cement
through an injection line.
Installation
An initial survey of the borehole establishes the distances
between the metal rings as installed.
Mounting Templates are used to position the measuring rings
at exactly 1000mm.
Following the procedure described above, the distance
between all the metal rings should be about one metre.
Subsequent surveys of the borehole will show any changes in
the distance between the metal markers. Therefore, a profile
of settlement or heave of the adjacent ground is easily and
accurately determined.
Head cover plates are used to position the fixing and adjusting
device for lowering the probe.
Increased distance = elongation (extension) along the
borehole axis;
decreased distance = shortening (compression) along the
borehole axis
For soft soil conditions the measuring ring will be pre-installed
in a packer anchor.
The Increx packer anchor is suited for boreholes of 150mm and
has a total length of 400mm.
