Designed for use in conjunction with the ASM-990 Series and other standard GM survey meters, the 489-110D can detect alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. It is configured for operating convenience in table-top and floor surveys as well as surveys of personnel and equipment. Prime applications for this probe include nuclear medicine counter tops and frisker stations, leakage detection for low energy diagnostic x-ray machines, geological and environmental surveys or any place where there exists the suspicion that some form of radiation is present, especially emergency response teams.
For storage and carrying ease, the probe fits into the standard handle clip on a survey meter.
The GM probe comes in two configurations: 489-110D with an ABS plastic housing, MHV connector, and foam grip, or
489-110E with a BNC connector. This selection of connectors provides the ability to attach the GM probe to most GM survey meters on the market. Replacement foam grip handles are available: 489-130-44. This same probe design is available in a rugged metal housing as 489-110C.

GM probes for qualitative radiation detection—the
Geiger-Mueller (GM) detectors fulfill a wide variety of radiation measurement needs for alpha, beta, gamma and x-ray sources. Some probes have are provided with a 360° shield to permit discrimination between penetrating and non-penetrating radiation.
The GM detectors have a field-proven design to ensure dependable performance, reliability and ruggedness. Standard MHV type connectors readily allow interchange of all detector probes. The life expectancy of the counters ranges from
108 total counts to unlimited life depending on the type of quench gas utilized.
Enhanced sensitivity to lowlevel alpha, beta, gamma and x-ray radiation is achieved when using the unique
498-110D Pancake GM Probe.
The following probe selection guide lists various probes and suggested applications. Applications include nuclear medicine counter top surveys, leakage detection from diagnostic x-ray and linear accelerators, geological surveys, scrap metal yards and unknown wells.

Scintillation probes for quantitative radiation assessment (counts/minute) –
The scintillation detectors are optically coupled to photomultiplier tubes, which are then both magnetically shielded with mu-metal and specially shock-mounted to provide trouble-free performance. The entire detector, crystal and photomultiplier, are secured in a sturdy cylindrical aluminum housing. Where appropriate, a thin window has been utilized to provide alpha or low energy gamma response.
Applications outlined in this guide include nuclear medicine labs, HAZMAT spills, radiation safety office surveys, industrial hygiene, industrial x-ray manufacturing, and geological surveys.

35 Area
Radiation Monitor
The PRIMALERT 35 contains an energy-compensated GM detector and has six range indicators
(1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 mR/hr) that can clearly display an increase or decrease in radiation levels.
The visible and audible alarms can be set at any of the six levels by a front-panel, screwdriveradjustable control. When each preset radiation level is exceeded, personnel are alerted by bright flashing red lights (visible over a 180° field) and a loud intermittent audio signal. The alarms stop automatically when the radiation level falls below each of the preset values. This permits instant radiation-level recognition not readily distinguishable on meter-type instruments.
Fail-safe operation is assured by a light which continuously indicates background radiation and provides visual proof that the unit is functioning. The monitor will not jam or show false readings in high radiation fields. A mounting bracket and a
110 V ac adapter/power converter are also included.
Key features
•
Provides continuous visual indication of radiation levels and produces audible and/ or visual alarms at any of six programmable radiation levels
•

The Lawrence Livermore
Realistic Phantom
The Lawrence Livermore
Realistic Phantom
The Lawrence Livermore Realistic Phantom was developed under the direction of the US
Department of Energy, primarily as a reference standard for the in-vivo counting of emissions from low-energy transuranic nuclides. The organs of primary interest—the lungs, liver and lymph nodes—may be either radioactive or inert. These organs are accommodated in a thorax generally similar to average adult males.
The Livermore Phantom contains a synthetic bone skeleton molded within a soft-tissueequivalent material. The organs are located in an internal cavity with a separate torso cover that closes the phantom. Anterior sections of ribs and the sternum are molded into this cover.
Soft-tissue-equivalent blocks are used to position the organs and fill significant air spaces, providing continuity of the soft-tissues throughout the phantom. The phantom is shipped assembled with inert organs. Any or all of these organs can be replaced with radioactive organs, which are shipped in separate packages.
Organs
All organs are made of soft-tissue-equivalent material. Lungs are available with the nuclides uniformly dispersed throughout the lung molding material. Optional organs (developed by Fluke Biomedical and not part of the original DOE specifications) are inert, but have holes in 2 cm x 2 cm grids. These can be filled with either inert plugs or with active capsules to establish any desired distribution within the lungs.
The liver has the same loading flexibility.
However, another option is available, designed for use with solutions having relatively short half-lives. This liver is a hollow shell with a fill/drain port.
If the liver is not required, it may be replaced with the Abdominal Contents, which are also available with a hole matrix or active.
Lymph nodes are available as hollow shells or as active packets. Two are 8 mm in diameter by 17 mm long. A third is 13 mm in diameter by 25 mm long. They are positioned in recessed molds in a lymph node block.

Chest overlay plates
Transuranic emissions from individuals with varying amounts of muscle and/ or adipose tissue may be so attenuated as to be undetectable. Chest overlay plates were developed to ensure the validity of in-vivo counting of such individuals.
There are three sets of plates, each in four graded thicknesses. One set is equivalent to 87 % adipose and 13 % muscle, another is equivalent to 50 % adipose and 50 % muscle, and the third is equivalent to 100 % muscle. Plates of each material and/or each thickness are available separately.
Targets
Three sets of concentric circles are drawn in permanent black ink over the torso cover and over each chest overlay plate. They range from 1 to 5 inch in diameter in 1 inch increments, with a 5.5 inch diameter outer circle. One set of circles is placed over each lung region, with the outer circle tangent to the inferior aspect of the clavicle and protruding over the sternum. The third set is placed over the liver.
A 2 cm
2
grid is projected in red ink over most of the chest surface by the same technique that is used for the circles. All targets are consistent among all phantoms.
Organs
The organs of the Lawrence
Livermore Realistic Phantom fit exactly into the Fission-
Product Phantom. However, the internal construction has been modified to accommodate additional organs: thyroid, kidneys, stomach, spleen, pancreas, and small and large intestines.
The Fission-Product Phantom system is shipped with inert organs. Any or all organs can be replaced by radioactive organs, which are shipped in separate packages.
The same choices of nuclide loadings are available for active organs as for the liver of the
Livermore phantom (uniformly dispersed in the molding materials, hollow shells or with hole grids).
Chest overlay plates
These are fitted specifically to the Fission-Product Phantom and are not interchangeable with the Livermore phantom.
The Fission-Product Phantom
The Fission-Product Phantom is partially modeled after the Lawrence Livermore Realistic
Phantom. It was developed to meet the needs of nuclear power plants and other facilities where more organs are needed than are provided by the Lawrence Livermore Realistic Phantom.
This phantom may be used on a couch, in a chair or standing. It includes the head and neck, the complete torso and stub legs articulated at the hips (which are also needed for the sitting position). The same access to the torso cavity is provided as in the Livermore phantom.
The materials of construction are multienergetic formulations. The skeleton has been extended to include the head and full torso.
The “Superhuman Skeleton,” which is multienergetic, is used. Materials closely meet the standard of the International Commission on
Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) Report No. 44 (Tissue Substitutes in
Radiation Dosimetry and Measurement, 1989.)
