Torsion Bar Unloader Tool Instructions

- Wear eye protection that meets ANSIZ87.1 and
OSHA requirements.
- The torsion bar is under pressure, creating a
potentially dangerous situation. Completely release
tension before servicing the torsion bar
-Disconnect shock absorbers before using the
torsion bar tool.
REMOVAL:
1. Support vehicle per vehicle manufacturer’s
recommendations such that the suspension is fully
unloaded.
2. Attach the torsion bar tool (#14001) to the vehicle
frame rail shown (Figure 1). Tighten the tool against
the torsion key (Figure 2).
3. Loosen or remove the torsion bar adjusting bolt
while counting the number of turns required. This
helps to identify the original position of the adjusting
bolt.
4. Remove the tool, and perform the required service.
INSTALLATION:
1. Attach the tool to the vehicle frame rail (Figure 1).
Tighten the tool against the torsion key (Figure 2).
2. Tighten the tool to draw the torsion key into the
frame rail.
3. Tighten the torsion bar adjusting bolt using the
same number of turns recorded in step 3 of removal.
4. Remove the tool.
5. Refer to vehicle service manual for the correct
suspension height and alignment specifications.
