SUMMER 2011

2

Dear Reader,

Thanks for taking an interest in Focusrite!

Since 1985 Focusrite remains the go-to brand for the best in analogue signal processing. But time moves on and we have kept up with the changes in the recording industry with the move to Digital Audio

Workstations (DAWs). Our product range now not only includes our “heritage” ISA series, which has its roots in the 1980’s with transformer-coupled microphone preamps and the legendary Focusrite EQ, but also hybrid analogue / digital signal processing found in the Liquid family.

Digital conversion is today as much our expertise as is microphone pre-amplifier design. The ISA One Digital features A/D conversion that out-performs any other product anywhere near its price bracket in terms of dynamic range, noise and jitter.

Indeed, all our ISA A/D converter cards are the equal of, and in some cases out-perform, the best converter brands available, and often at a fraction of the price.

Which brings me to our fastest-growing business segment today: Audio Interfaces.

Our new Scarlett USB 2.0 and secondgeneration Saffire Audio Interfaces are truly

State-of-the-Art delivering on one simple promise – the best sound in their class.

The growing range includes products for all pockets and requirement levels, from the Saffire 6 USB - our entry-level interface

- to the Liquid Saffire 56, which combines two channels of Liquid mic-pre emulation with six Focusrite Saffire mic pres, specially designed for the Saffire Range. RedNet goes one step further, using innovative networking technology and standard ethernet protocols to completely redefine how we see the modern recording studio.

So we are both Focusrite - the Heritage

Analogue Audio Company, and Focusrite -

The Interface Company. Old School and

New School. We aim to continue to be the best of both. I hope you will join our family of satisfied customers.

RedNet 1 and 2: 8 and 16 channel AD-DA Interfaces

RedNet 1 and 2 feature Focusrite’s precision 24-bit AD and DA conversion for superb audio performance, with 120dB dynamic range at sample rates up to 192kHz. RedNet 1 provides eight channels; RedNet 2, 16 channels.

RedNet 3: Digital I/O

RedNet 3 interfaces existing digital audio systems and components up to a maximum of 32 inputs and outputs. Sixteen ADAT optical ports provide a full 32 digital channels in and out at up to

96kHz (S-MUX2). Support for AES, S/PDIF and ADAT digital audio formats and word clock.

RedNet is Focusrite’s powerful new scalable professional digital audio networking system, delivering everything you need in a studio environment. Using standard, robust and reliable Internet Protocol (IP) networking technology to carry high resolution audio over a standard Ethernet network, RedNet makes studio design, installation and configuration easier than ever before.

RedNet 4: Eight Microphone preamps/line inputs

RedNet 4 provides eight specially-designed Focusrite mic preamps and line inputs with two selectable DIs – plus Focusrite world-class precision AD conversion and specially-crafted mic preamps. Front panel or remote control.

4

At its heart is the robust, tried-and-tested Dante™ digital audio networking technology, from Audinate. Dante uses standard Gigabit Ethernet networking components to carry up to 128 inputs and 128 outputs over standard Ethernet.

Dante has become a standard in live sound, frequently relied on for major events.

Focusrite brings Dante into the heart of the studio with versatile, superb-quality audio interfaces that will revolutionise everything in your studio – from wiring to workflow. And unlike other digital audio systems, RedNet is non-proprietary, working with any ASIO or Core Audio compliant DAW software including Pro Tools 9, Logic and Nuendo.

THE RANgE

RedNet initially comprises five products. Four high-quality, versatile interfaces deliver traditional Focusrite ethos and performance, where sound is everything, with exceptional value for money. Accompanying these is the optional RedNet

PCIe card, delivering under 3mS latency at any sample rate*.

*Latency under 3mS requires the RedNet PCIe card and a DAW buffer setting of 32 samples or less

Every analogue interface features 120dB dynamic range, 24-bit resolution and sample rates up to 192kHz. Each embodies the most advanced conversion designs and components on the market. Each includes JetPLL™ for ultra-low-jitter clock recovery. The result: quality that is, quite literally, second to none.

RedNet Low-Latency PCIe Card

Where low latency is critical, such as tracking, the RedNet PCIe card for Mac or Windows delivers sub-3mS latency, 128 inputs and outputs, and sample rates from 44.1 to 192kHz. A standard Ethernet RJ45 connects to your network. Alternatively, use the Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) and your machine’s built-in Ethernet port, for latency comparable to Focusrite FireWire interfaces.

What is VRM?

Convenient though headphones may be, they’re simply not the same as listening on a pair of monitor loudspeakers. And yet… listening on one pair of monitor speakers isn’t enough either. To tell how your music will sound in the real world, you need to listen in different environments, with different speakers. Until now, you had to burn a CD or transfer a file and play it back on real systems in actual environments to A/B your mixes in different places. But now, there’s a better way.

VIRTUAL REFERENCE MONITORINg

The answer is Focusrite’s unique and well-established VRM™ (Virtual Reference Monitoring) technology – a room and loudspeaker simulation system for headphone monitoring. While listening on conventional monitoring headphones, VRM lets you select your listening environment – pro studio, bedroom studio or living room – and choose from an extensive list of industry-standard studio monitors and loudspeaker systems to listen on.

VRM’s extensive selection of built-in loudspeakers and listening environments is based on precise mathematical models derived from convolutions of actual impulse responses measured using the original loudspeakers. The use of mathematical modelling provides maximum flexibility of combinations of loudspeakers and listening environments for the highest possible accuracy of the virtual monitoring simulation.

VRM allows you to choose between 10 pairs of industry-standard nearfield monitors in an acoustically-treated control room. In addition, two extra rooms are provided – a large living room and a smaller bedroom – where you can choose between speakers such as quality hi-fi, computer, cheap stereo and TV speakers.

La Roux

La roux are singer-synth player Elly Jackson and co-writer/producer Ben Langmaid. There self titled debut album has delivered some of the years biggest tracks in No.1 selling single

Bulletproof and In for the Kill charting at No.2. The album has been nominated for the 2009

Mercury Prize.

We caught up with Ben during a busy live touring schedule to chat about how La Roux have utilised Focusrite products on the current and forthcoming albums.

Your sound is very electro based… Did your routes begin in dance music?

I started as a DJ and moved into production after helping a friend of mine (Rollo) set up the band Faithless. I went on to produce my own records under the guises of Huff & Puff and Huff

& Herb to name a few.

How are you using the liquid channel in the studio?

I’m using the liquid channel Mainly for vocals and currently testing out all the combinations of vintage compressors, eq’s and pre-amps to see how it performs!

What are your main reasons for going with Focusrite Hardware?

They’re a solid company with a very strong reputation. I used the Saffire Pro 26 and the

ISA430MKII to record all of Elly’s vocals on the first La Roux album and they produced some quality results.

And the key features you love on the Liquid Channel?

I’m into the different combinations of compression and pre-amps. The precise emulations offer me a lot of variety and access to a vast array of classic units in the studio, which I’d otherwise spend a small fortune on! Being able to save my presets is a handy feature as well…

What benefits have the liquid channel brought to your studio work?

Quite simply its quick to setup and easy to use. You can tailor the kit to your vocalist’s sound and tone whilst tapping into the vast bank of presets. I’m only just scratching the sides of its full potential.

How have you found the linkup with the liquid channel to your DAW?

The seamless linkup with my mac made it quick and easy to setup. We had it plugged in straight out the box and running in a few minutes. I’m also able to back up my presets. www.laroux.co.uk

WHAT IS DyNAMIC CONVOLUTION?

Dynamic Convolution is a unique, patented technology that emulates the sonic properties of original compressors, EQs and the amplification element of mic preamps. Essentially, it samples (as opposed to models), the effect a processor has on the audio signal through the application of a unique, leveldependant set of responses to that signal. These measured responses, sampled at numerous levels and with a multitude of setting combinations, are applied to the input stream on a sample-by-sample basis for extremely convincing results.

Liquid Channel Perfects

Carl Cox’s Live Mix

“My Liquid Channels are transparent but warm and big in their sound and, as testament to their quality, our FOH engineer said it was the first time in his career that he didn’t need to add any EQ or processing!” remarks Carl Cox, one of the world’s premier DJs.

A pair of the hardware processors acts as the last stage in his chain, before the signal from the stage hits the enormous PA system, whether he’s playing a beach party in Miami, a superclub in Berlin, or a global music festival. “They fit the bill perfectly. They are the solid final link in my audio chain for my live show, something that gives me a sonic edge. EQ, compression, limiting: you just set it and forget it.”

Liquid Channels will be rocking the Carl Cox Live Show for some time to come!

Cox is no stranger to the DJ booth, and has picked up numerous accolades in his tremendous career. He was the first ever winner of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 poll in 1997, and he still packs venues worldwide. But he also has serious studio chops, with three albums, countless singles and a glut of remixes to his name. www.carlcox.com

Focusrite Preamps From

The Very Beginning

Focusrite have been behind Amy Macdonald’s sound from the very first sessions in producer

Pete Wilkinson’s home studio, “we worked in a very lo-fi way where Amy came to my little studio at home and put down her vocals. All of Amy’s original vocals were recorded through my

Voicemaster Pro; it was the vocal that the mix engineer and mastering house ended up with.”

The ISA One Digital gives the Focusrite sound that I have on my ISA rackmount gear in a preamp I can take on the road to extend my system. As a clock source it’s rock solid, and it’s great value for money. It’s an outstanding little preamp.

James Stone

But it’s not just Amy’s vocal that gets the Focusrite treatment. Joe Fields, Pete’s engineer of choice, continues: “When Pete brings the template in, we replace the instruments to try to get it sounding how he had it in his studio. We start with drums then bass and guitars, then live strings. We tracked the strings and most of the drums through Focusrite ISA428s.”

These days, Amy and her team use the ISA One Digital preamp on her vocals. To hear the quality of the Focusrite mic pre, check out Amy’s second album, A Curious Thing, which is available now.

It’s always nice to have something that you know gives good results. I was a tape op when Focusrite came along, and whenever I got the chance to try Focusrite equipment, it always sounded amazing. It’s something that I’ll always go for if it’s in a room, because I trust it and I know it always comes through.

The Focusrite sound is always nice on anything you want a lot of high fidelity to.

Drum overheads always sound great, and it’s the same with strings recordings.

It works really well on vocals; It helps me make the mix.
