Abstract
A number of future spectroscopic surveys are being designed and new instruments are being
built to fit their needs. I will review the new instrumentation and the science drivers for these.
This will include some of the obvious and long-standing questions in Galactic archeology but I
will also discuss some of the limitations of the current and future instrumentation in the context
of certain science questions and what the next generation (beyond the planned one) of new
survey instruments could look like.
