To avoid a shock hazard, do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform
installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical
storm.
To avoid shock hazard:
– The power cord must be connected to a properly wired and earthed receptacle.
– Any equipment to which this product will be attached must also be connected to
properly wired receptacles.
When possible, use one hand to connect or disconnect signal cables to prevent a
possible shock from touching two surfaces with different electrical potentials.
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communications cables is hazardous.

Tower-to-Rack Conversion Kit
With the IBM Netfinity 5000 Tower-to-Rack Conversion Kit you can convert your server from a tower
model to a rack model. This book provides instructions for installing a conversion kit on your server and
installing your server in a rack enclosure. For additional information about the Netfinity 5000 server,
consult the “Hardware Information” section of the Netfinity 5000 Server Library.
Note: Installing the server in a rack might require two people.
Inventory List
The conversion kit contains the following items:
Two chassis brackets
One top cover, with captive thumbscrew
One bottom cover
One rack-model front bezel, with power-on switch protector attached
One ribbon cable (for operator LED panel)
One or more packages of screws, some of which are optional replacement screws.
One packet containing nine electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) clips
One rack mounting kit
– Two slide-bracket assemblies, each containing an inner slide, an outer slide, and a slide bracket
– One cable-management arm
– One cable-arm bracket
– One bag of screws and nuts
– Cable ties
– One installation template

Installing the Conversion Kit on the Server
Before You Begin
Ÿ Read through these instructions to familiarize yourself with the installation procedure.
Ÿ Read the “Legal and Safety Information” section of the Netfinity 5000 Server Library.
Note: The illustrations in this publication might be slightly different from your hardware.

CAUTION:
Use safe lifting practices when lifting your machine.
1. Prepare the server for conversion.
a. Shut down the server operating system.
b. Unlock the server door and open it. Open the server door by pushing and releasing the
depression in the door.
c. Remove the server door.
1) Locate the flange on the top edge of the front door, near the hinge.

2) Press the flange downward while pressing out on the door; then, lift the door off the hinge.
Set the door aside.
d. Remove all media (diskettes, CDs, optical discs, or tapes) from the drives.
e. Turn off the server and any attached devices, such as printers, monitors, and external drives.
f. If you have a fax or modem attached to the server, disconnect the telephone line from the wall
outlet and the server.
Note: If you are in the United Kingdom and have a modem or fax machine attached to your
server, you must disconnect the telephone line from the server before unplugging any
power cords (also known as power cables).

CAUTION:
The Power Control button on the front of the server does not turn off the electrical
current supplied to the server. The server also might have more than one power
cord. To remove all electrical current from the server, ensure that all power cords
are disconnected from the power source.
g. Disconnect all the power cords (cables) from electrical outlets.
h. Disconnect all communication cables from external receptacles.
i. Disconnect all remaining cables and power cords from the back of the server.

2. Using a pen or pencil, write the bay numbers of the hard disk drives on the drives (1 to 5, from left to
right), as indicated in the following illustration. For example, if you have only three drives, installed in
bays 2, 3, and 4, they would be numbered 2, 3, and 4 respectively.

3. Remove the left-side cover.
a. Locate the cover-release lever on the front of the server and slide it to the right.

b. Slide the left-side cover back about 25 mm (1 inch); then, lift the cover and remove it.
c. Keep the cover nearby, or obtain the new top cover from the conversion kit; you might need to
refer to the service label on the inside of the cover.

4. Remove the front bezel.
a. Locate the blue bezel-release lever on the left side of the server in the top front corner.

b. Move the lever upward following the curve of the lever opening.
c. Lift the bezel tabs out of the tab openings at the bottom front of the server and pull the bezel away
from the server front.
d. Store the bezel in a safe place.
5. Remove the cover-release latch.
a. Remove the spring from the latch hook .1/ and the hook .2/ on the edge of the server.
b. Remove the two screws located on the front of the latch; then, remove the latch pieces from the
server.

6. Remove the right-side cover.
a. From the rear of the server, remove the screws holding the cover.
b. Slide the cover toward the rear of the server about 25 mm (1 inch); then, lift the cover off the
server.
c. Position the server on its side on a flat, nonconductive surface.
7. Remove the four feet from the server bottom.
Note: Three of the feet are accessed from inside the server; the fourth is located outside the server,
near the expansion slots.
a. Using a screwdriver, push the middle of the foot (the foot pin) straight through the foot toward the
outside of the server.
b. Push the foot out of the server.

8. Remove the base cover plate from the server bottom.
a. Remove the screw holding the plate in place.
b. Remove the plate.
9. Move the operator LED panel .5/ to its new location .2/.
a. Remove the screws that attach the operator LED panel to the LED panel bracket.
b. Unplug the cable from the back of the operator LED panel.
c. Move the operator LED panel to the upper left corner .2/ of the server front.
d. Install the screws for the operator LED panel. Use two M3 by 5-mm screws from the conversion
kit if you prefer.
e. Disconnect the LED panel cable from the connector on the system board; move it to the cable clip
that is under the hard disk drive enclosure, to keep it out of the way.
f. Connect the new LED cable from the conversion kit to the back of the operator LED panel.
Connect the other end of the cable into the LED panel connector (J29) on the system board (see
the service label inside the cover).
Note: If you have difficulty connecting a cable, turn the cable connector over and try again; cable
connectors are keyed to connect only one way.

10. Remove the operator LED panel bracket .5/ from the server.
a. Remove the screw holding the bracket in place.
b. Slide the bracket toward the diskette drive.
c. Lift the bracket away from the server front, out of the slots holding it.
11. Move the power-on switch panel .4/ to its new location .1/.
a. Disconnect the cable for the power-on switch panel from the system board.
b. Remove the screws from the the power-on switch panel; carefully remove the panel and cable
from the server.
c. Thread the power-on switch panel cable through the hole at its new location .1/, and align the
panel with its new location. The power-on switch button must be on the left; the reset button must
be on the right.
d. Install the screws for the power-on switch panel. Use two M3 by 5-mm screws from the
conversion kit if you prefer.
e. Reconnect the power-on switch panel cable to the On/Off & Reset connector (J34) on the system
board (see the service label inside the cover).
Note: If you have difficulty connecting a cable, turn the cable connector over and try again; cable
connectors are keyed to connect only one way.

12. Modify the CD-ROM drive for vertical operation.
a. Insert the end of a straightened paper clip into the manual tray-release opening and gently pull the
tray open.
b. Depending on the model of CD-ROM, pull or pivot the tabs in the tray corners toward the center of
the tray.
c. Gently push the tray back into the drive.
13. Prepare the hard disk drives for rack use.
a. Remove the fan from the hard disk drive backplane.
1) Push the fan release lever away from the hard disk drive enclosure and pull the fan away from
the server about 50 mm (2 inches).
2) Disconnect the fan cable from the connector on the system board (press on the release tab on
the fan cable plug to release it from the connector).
3) Remove the fan from the server. Set the fan aside.
b. Disconnect the cables from the hard disk drive backplane.

c. Remove the screws from the front of the hard disk drive enclosure; then, pull the hard disk drive
enclosure from the front of the server.
d. Move the orientation screw from the tower position .1/ to the rack position .2/.

e. Swap the SCSI IDs on the hot-swap bays. Swapping SCSI IDs is accomplished by changing the
A0 jumper on the hard disk drive backplane. To do this, you must first remove the daughterboard
from the hard disk drive backplane.
1) Release the tip of each of the three posts .1/ holding the daughterboard.
2) Pull the daughterboard away from the hard disk drive backplane. Set the daughterboard aside
on a nonconductive surface.

3) Locate jumper block J4 on the hard disk drive backplane. Remove the jumper from A0.
Note: Make sure the jumper on A2 remains in place.

4) Position the daughterboard on the connector and posts on the hard disk drive backplane.
Press gently but firmly until the daughterboard is securely seated and the posts hold the board
in place.

f. Orient the hard disk drive enclosure as shown. Note the position of the drive handles.
g. Push the hard disk drive enclosure straight into the opening in the server front.
h. Secure the hard disk drive enclosure in place using the screws you removed in step 13c on
page 10.
i. Reconnect to the hard disk drive backplane the cables that you disconnected in step 13b on
page 9.
j. Swap the hard disk drives in the bays to correspond with the rack-model bay numbering. (The
hot-swap bays in a rack model are numbered 1 through 5 from top to bottom; move the drive you
numbered 1 (for tower bay 1) to the top bay (rack bay 1), move the drive you numbered 2 to bay
2, and so forth.

k. Reinstall the fan.
1) Align the fan bracket with the fan bracket guides .1/.
2) Push the fan bracket toward the system board about 50 mm (2 inches).
3) Reconnect the fan cable into the Fan 1 connector (J13) on the system board (see the service
label inside the cover).
4) Push the fan bracket in until it clicks into place.
Note: Make sure no cables will be trapped or crimped by the fan bracket.

14. Install the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) clips in the retaining slots .1/, .2/ near the top
of the sides.
a. Place the blade end of the EMC clip into the wider opening in the retaining slot.
b. With the blade end flat against the server, push the hooked end slightly toward the blade end so
that you can push the hooked end through the smaller slot opening.
15. Attach the chassis brackets.
a. Insert two M3.5 by 7-mm screws through the left bracket into the holes on the left side of the
server; then, tighten the screws.
b. Do the same on the right side.

16. Install the new front bezel from the conversion kit.
a. Align the tabs .1/ on the back of the bezel with the tab openings on the front of the server.
b. Press the bezel into place until it clicks.
17. Install the new bottom cover.
a. Position the server as illustrated below.
b. Align the bottom cover with the frame of the server.
c. Press the cover onto the server; then, slide the cover toward the front of the server.
d. Install the screws in the back of the cover.
e. Return the server to its previous position (top side up).

18. Install the new top cover.
a. Align the top cover with the top of the server, about 25 mm (1 inch) from the front of the server.
b. Hold the top cover against the server and slide the cover toward the front of the server.
Note: Be sure the front edge of the cover is flat against the server.
c. Turn clockwise the captive thumbscrew .1/ on the cover until the cover is secured.
19. Attach the cable-arm bracket to the rear of the server.
a. Remove the two screws at the left of the primary power supply.
b. Align the cable-arm bracket with the screw holes, keeping the solid arm of the bracket toward the
side of the server. Make sure the openings in the bracket align with the power supply LEDs and
the fan.
c. Attach the bracket with the two screws you removed in step 19a.

20. Attach the inner slide section of each slide-bracket-assembly slide rail to the side of the server.
a. Pull the inner slide until the safety latch locks.
b. Press the safety latch; then, pull the inner slide firmly until it detaches from the outer slide rail.
c. Align the holes on the inner slide with the holes on the sides of the server; then, attach the slide
with three M4 by 5-mm pan-head screws from the slide-bracket-assembly package.
d. Attach the other inner slide to the other side of the server.
21. Continue the installation at “Installing the Server in the Rack Enclosure” on page 18.

Installing the Server in the Rack Enclosure
This process is divided into two parts; preparing the rack and installing the server.
Important:
1. Installing the server in a rack might require two people.
2. To ensure cabinet stability, install the servers starting from the bottom of the rack enclosure.
3. If you are installing different server models in the rack enclosure, install the heaviest models in the
lower part of the rack enclosure.

Preparing the Rack Enclosure
To attach the mounting hardware to the rack enclosure:
1. Mark the positions of the slide brackets on the mounting rails of the rack enclosure.
a. Position the template on the front mounting rail, aligning the holes. Secure the template in place
with tape.
b. Mark the holes for the slide brackets and cage nuts. If you prefer, mark all the cage nut positions
on the rack at this time.
c. Carefully remove the tape from the mounting rails, and attach the template to the rear mounting
rails. Mark the locations for the slide brackets and cage nuts.
Notes:
a. You must align the slide brackets correctly or the installation cannot be completed.
b. The slide rails each have four screws on them to allow for length adjustment.
2. Install the cage nuts in the marked positions as shown.

3. Attach the outer slide rail to the left side of the rack enclosure.
a. Extend the outer slide rail until the slide bracket is flush against the outside of the left front
mounting rail. Align the slide rail with the cage nuts on the mounting rail.
b. From the front of the rack enclosure, insert two M6 by 16-mm screws through the slide bracket
and mounting rail. Press the slide bracket until it is flush with the outer edge of the mounting rail;
then, tighten the screws.
c. Attach the slide bracket to the left rear side of the rack enclosure.
1) Align the holes on the slide bracket with the cage nuts on the rear mounting rail.
2) From the rear of the rack enclosure, insert two M6 by 16-mm screws through the slide bracket
and mounting rail; then, tighten the screws.
3) If it was necessary to adjust the length of the slide rails, tighten the nuts on the slide rail, using
pliers, a socket wrench, or an adjustable wrench.

4. Attach the outer slide rail to the right side of the rack enclosure.
a. Extend the outer slide rail until the slide bracket is flush against the outside of the right front
mounting rail. Align the slide bracket with the cage nuts on the mounting rail.
b. From the front of the rack enclosure, insert two M6 by 16-mm screws through the slide bracket
and mounting rail. Press the slide bracket so that it is flush with the outer edge of the mounting
rail; then, tighten the screws.
c. Attach the slide bracket to the right rear of the rack enclosure.
1) Align the holes on the slide bracket with the cage nuts on the rear mounting rail.
2) From the rear of the rack enclosure, insert two M6 by 16-mm screws through the slide bracket
and mounting rail; then, tighten the screws.
3) If it was necessary to adjust the length of the slide rails, tighten the nuts on the slide rail, using
pliers, a socket wrench, or an adjustable wrench.

5. Attach the cable-management arm to the right rear of the rack enclosure.
a. Align the holes on the cable-management arm mounting panel with the cage nuts on the rear
mounting rail.
b. From the rear of the rack enclosure, insert two M6 by 16-mm screws the holes in the
cable-management arm mounting panel and cage nut; then, tighten the screws.
Notes:
1) You can wait to attach the cable-management arm to the rack until after you have attached
the other end of the cable-management arm to the server.
2) To facilitate alignment of the cable-management arm, be sure to insert the screws through the
first and fourth holes, as shown.
Installing the Server
To install the server into the rack enclosure:
1. If you have not done so already, install a cage nut in each front mounting rail in the marked
positions, as shown.

2. Place the server part-way in the rack.
a. Position the server horizontally, with the operator LED panel at the upper left.
b. Align the inner slides on the sides of the server with the slide rails; then, slide the server onto the
outer slide, until the slide rails click into place.
Note: When the server is fully extended, safety latches on the slide rails lock into place. This
prevents the server from being accidentally pulled out too far and dropped. To release the
safety latch, press in.
c. Press the safety latches and slide the server about halfway into the rack enclosure.
3. Attach the cable-management arm to the cable-arm bracket, using two M6 by 16 mm screws.
4. If you have not done so already, attach the cable-management arm to the rack as described in
steps 5a and 5b on page 21.
5. Attach the cables to the server.
a. Attach the monitor, keyboard, and power cables to the corresponding connectors on the server.
Refer to the rack enclosure documentation for instructions.
b. Attach any other cables you removed before you converted the server to a rack model.

c. Attach all the cables to the cable-management arm using the cable ties provided.
Note: Be sure to route the cables above the top edge or below the bottom edge of the
cable-management arm, to avoid overstressing the cables.
6. Secure the server in the rack enclosure.
a. Slide the server into the rack enclosure.
b. Secure the server to both sides of the rack enclosure by inserting a M6 by 16-mm screw through
the chassis bracket, mounting rail, and cage nut on each side.

7. Connect all server and device cables and connectors.
Notes:
a. If you are in the United Kingdom and are going to attach a modem or fax machine to your server,
you must plug in all power cords before connecting the telephone line.
b. Wait 15 seconds after connecting the power cords to the server and the wall outlet before
proceeding to the next step.
8. Use the server configuration program to reconfigure the server.
Because of the necessary changes to the hard disk drives, you must change the server configuration
so that the Netfinity Manager program will show a graphic of a tower model for this server instead of
showing a rack model.
a. Press the Power-On switch to turn on the server, and watch the screen.

your sales receipt is the Date of Installation, unless IBM or your reseller informs you otherwise.
During the warranty period IBM or your reseller, if approved by IBM to provide warranty service, will provide repair and exchange
service for the Machine, without charge, under the type of service designated for the Machine and will manage and install
engineering changes that apply to the Machine.
If a Machine does not function as warranted during the warranty period, and IBM or your reseller are unable to either 1) make it do
so or 2) replace it with one that is at least functionally equivalent, you may return it to your place of purchase and your money will be
refunded. The replacement may not be new, but will be in good working order.
Extent of Warranty
The warranty does not cover the repair or exchange of a Machine resulting from misuse, accident, modification, unsuitable physical
or operating environment, improper maintenance by you, or failure caused by a product for which IBM is not responsible. The

IBM or your reseller provides certain types of repair and exchange service, either at your location or at a service center, to keep
Machines in, or restore them to, conformance with their Specifications. IBM or your reseller will inform you of the available types of
service for a Machine based on its country of installation. IBM may repair the failing Machine or exchange it at its discretion.
When warranty service involves the exchange of a Machine or part, the item IBM or your reseller replaces becomes its property and
the replacement becomes yours. You represent that all removed items are genuine and unaltered. The replacement may not be
new, but will be in good working order and at least functionally equivalent to the item replaced. The replacement assumes the
warranty service status of the replaced item.
Any feature, conversion, or upgrade IBM or your reseller services must be installed on a Machine which is 1) for certain Machines,
the designated, serial-numbered Machine and 2) at an engineering-change level compatible with the feature, conversion, or upgrade.
Many features, conversions, or upgrades involve the removal of parts and their return to IBM. A part that replaces a removed part
will assume the warranty service status of the removed part.
Before IBM or your reseller exchanges a Machine or part, you agree to remove all features, parts, options, alterations, and
attachments not under warranty service.
You also agree to
1. ensure that the Machine is free of any legal obligations or restrictions that prevent its exchange;
2. obtain authorization from the owner to have IBM or your reseller service a Machine that you do not own; and
3. where applicable, before service is provided
a. follow the problem determination, problem analysis, and service request procedures that IBM or your reseller provides,
b. secure all programs, data, and funds contained in a Machine,
c. provide IBM or your reseller with sufficient, free, and safe access to your facilities to permit them to fulfill their obligations,
and
d. inform IBM or your reseller of changes in a Machine's location.
IBM is responsible for loss of, or damage to, your Machine while it is 1) in IBM's possession or 2) in transit in those cases where IBM
is responsible for the transportation charges.
Neither IBM nor your reseller is responsible for any of your confidential, proprietary or personal information contained in a Machine
which you return to IBM or your reseller for any reason. You should remove all such information from the Machine prior to its return.
Production Status
Each IBM Machine is manufactured from new parts, or new and used parts. In some cases, the Machine may not be new and may
have been previously installed. Regardless of the Machine's production status, IBM's appropriate warranty terms apply.
Limitation of Liability
Circumstances may arise where, because of a default on IBM's part or other liability, you are entitled to recover damages from IBM.
In each such instance, regardless of the basis on which you are entitled to claim damages from IBM (including fundamental breach,
negligence, misrepresentation, or other contract or tort claim), IBM is liable for no more than
1. damages for bodily injury (including death) and damage to real property and tangible personal property; and
2. the amount of any other actual direct damages, up to the greater of U.S. $100,000 (or equivalent in local currency) or the
charges (if recurring, 12 months' charges apply) for the Machine that is the subject of the claim.
This limit also applies to IBM's suppliers and your reseller. It is the maximum for which IBM, its suppliers, and your reseller are
collectively responsible.

warranty service for that Machine in any of those countries from either (1) an IBM reseller approved to perform warranty service or

2. the amount of any other actual direct damages or loss, up to the greater of Pounds Sterling 150,000 or 125 percent of the charges
