meets the highest engineering and quality standards.
In accordance with IKA warranty conditions, the warranty period
is 24 months. For claims under the warranty please contact your
local dealer. You may also send the machine direct to our works,

The warranty does not cover wearing parts, nor does it apply to
faults resulting from improper use or insufficient care and
maintenance contrary to the instructions in this operating manual.
If you require servicing, return the appliance in its original packaging. Storage packaging is not sufficient. Please also use suitable
transport packaging.
Safety instructions
In order to be able to use the appliance properly and safely, every
user must first read the operating instructions and observe the
safety instructions contained therein. Take care of these operating
instructions and keep them in a place where they can be accessed
by everyone.
Only trained staff who are familiar with the appliance and who are
authorised to work in this area may operate this appliance, especially under a vacuum, using flammable liquids or explosive or
noxious substances.
Please follow the relevant safety instructions and guidelines, and
occupational health and safety regulations for use in the laboratory. When working under a vacuum in particular!
When working with the device, the user must select and wear his
personal protective equipment according to the mixing hazard
category of the medium.
When using media such as toxic liquids, gases, mist, vapours or
dusts, or, in some cases, biological or microbiological substances,
the user runs the risk of coming into contact with or inhaling the
medium.

Please observe the information on the hazardous substance
categories for handling solvents and toxic or biological substances.
Tasks with the RV 05 basic must only be performed when operation is monitored.
Always handle distillation fluids in the proper manner.
Operation with excess pressure is not permitted!
Adhere to the relevant regulations when working with explosive
substances and their compounds.
The device must only be used under an all side-closed exhaust,
or a comparable protective device.
The glass equipment must always be ventilated when working
under normal pressure (e.g. open outlet at cooler) in order to
prevent a pressure build-up due to extremely volatile gases or
an unknown pressure build-up. Please note that dangerous concentrations of gases, vapours or particulate matter can escape
through the outlet at the cooler. Take appropriate action to avoid
this risk, for example, downstream cold traps, gas wash bottles
or an effective extraction system.
Ensure that the appliance is on a flat, stable, non-slip surface.
Align the feet according to the appliance instructions (see
”Assembly” section). Always check before starting up that the
cantilever is fitted to the stand in accordance with the assembly instructions for drive RV 05 basic Depending on the structure
of the device, there may be a risk to the stationary stability. You
should therefore make certain the device is safe and stable each
time before placing it in service.
The appliance is designed for operation under a vacuum of up to
10 mbar. When carrying out vacuum distillation, uncondensed
vapours must be condensed out or safely dissipated. When
carrying out vacuum distillation, equipment must be evacuated
prior to heating (see ”Starting up” section). The equipment
must only be aired again after cooling. If there is a risk that the
distillation residue could disintegrate in the presence of oxygen,
only inert gas must be admitted for stress relief.
Glass parts should be checked over carefully for damage (for
example cracks) each time before placing the unit in service.
Damaged glass parts must not be used, as they can break
during operation. Glasses must be fitted without tension. When
using glass test equipment, it is important to note that bursting
can occur because of tension resulting from incorrect assembly,
because of external mechanical impact or local temperature
peaks. Evacuated glass vessels must not be heated on one side;
the evaporating flask must rotate during the heating phase.
Prevent peroxide from forming!
Liquids which are prone to forming organic peroxides must be
examined for peroxides prior to distillation and evaporation. Any
peroxides detected must be removed. Many organic compounds are prone to the formation of peroxides e.g. dekalin, diethyl ether, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, as well as unsaturated
hydrocarbons, such as tetralin, diene, cumene and aldehydes,
ketones and solutions of these substances.
The appliance must not be operated in explosive atmospheres
or under water.

Adapt the quantity and the type of distilland to the size of the
distillation equipment. The cooler must work properly. Monitor
the coolant flow rate at the cooler outlet (see information:
”Starting up”).
ATTENTION! Organic peroxides can build up in the distillation and waste steam residue of these liquids and solutions and disintegrate explosively! Liquids which are prone to forming organic peroxides must be kept away from light, especially
UV radiation.

ATTENTION! Avoid delayed boiling!
Never heat the evaporating flask in the heating bath without
switching on the rotary drive! If there are signs that the contents
of the flask are beginning to disintegrate in the course of a chemical reaction or distillation (for example, sudden foaming or outgases) switch the heating off immediately and lift the evaporating
flask out of the heating bath using the stand. Evacuate the danger
zone and warn those in the surrounding area!
ATTENTION! Rotating parts are a source of danger!
Never rotate the evaporating flask on the raised stand.
Always lower the stand for rotation. Ensure that parts of the body,
hair, items of clothing and jewellery cannot get caught in rotating
parts.
There may be dangerous electrostatic activity between the medium and the drive unit.
Check that the filled distillation flask is balanced when setting the
speed. Imbalances can cause uncontrolled resonance behaviour in
the appliance/equipment which could damage or destroy glass
equipment! Set the drive to a speed which ensures that none of
the medium is catapulted out by the rotating evaporating flask in
the heating bath.
Correct use
The IKA RV 05 basic is designed for evating solutions and for
rapid distillation of liquids. The medium in the operating evaporator flask is circulated by rotation. The surface the liquid is increased significantly by wetting the inner surface of the flask with the
liquids. This results in a rapid exchange of heat through a large surface.
Operating in a vacuum allows for gentle evaporation.
Unpacking
Please unpack the equipment carefully and check for any damages. It is important that any damages which may have arisen
during transport are ascertained when unpacking. If applicable a
fact report must be set immediately (post, rail or forwarder).
The delivery scope covers:
One IKA RV 05 basic, one extension, one fastening screw, one
hexagon socket screw, one ring spanner and one set of operating
instructions.
Risk of burns! The motor and glass parts may be hot during
operation and for a long time afterwards. Always wear your
personal protective equipment!
If the power fails or the motor stops during operation, you must
remove the evaporating flask from the heat source immediately by
raising the stand.
The machine may only be opened by trained specialists - even
during repairs. The machine is to be unplugged from the mains
before opening. Live parts inside the machine may still be live for
some time after unplugging from the mains.

Assembly
Commissioning
Stand:
Check whether the voltage specified on the type plate matches
the mains voltage available. The power socket used must be
earthed (protective earth conductor contact). If these conditions
are met, the device is ready to operate after plugging in the
mains plug. If these procedures are not followed, safe operation
cannot be guaranteed and/or the equipment may be damaged.
Observe the ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.)
listed under “Technical Data”.
The stand should be pre-mounted according to directions in the
operating instructions. It should be positioned so that the arrow
mark (on the base cross) is pointing forward at the lab table. The
heat bath should be placed on the right next to the foot standing
in front.
Drive:
First, insert the extension into the bore hole on the back of the
device and screw it securely in place with the cylinder head screws enclosed.
Using an R 271 cross sleeve, fasten the drive onto the stand. To
do this, clamp the cross sleeve in place on the stand tube about
20 cm above the operating knob of the stand.
It should be easy to tip driver counter clockwise, move it into the
cross sleeve with the extension and clamp it in place. The drive
must be aligned so that it is sitting vertically above the operating
knob of the stand.

When working with the evaporator, it has proven useful to follow certain orders while placing the unit in service. These orders
are designed to largely prevent foaming, which is highly undesirable, or to at least keep it under control. If the evaporation process is running satisfactorily, a vacuum controller can cover subsequent monitoring.
The IKAVAC VC2 vacuum controller allows for recover rates of
up to 99%. Working principle: Vacuum control by assigning a
defined pressure value.
Placing the vapour tube in the drive:
Turn the ring (R) to the left unit it
will go no further. Push the
vapour tube in and then turn the
ring (R) to the right until it will go
no further.
The disassembly follows the
direction in the opposite order.
Recommended start-up sequence
Glass sets:
Drawings with lists are included with the different glass sets. The
glass sets should be mounted on the drive according to these drawings.
•Switch on the rotary drive and gradually increase the speed.
This prevents temperature stress on the glass when you start
the heating process and set the required temperature at the
heating bath.
• Set the equipment to the target pressure using the vacuum
control before filling the vacuum flask to minimise solvent losses.
(It is of course also possible to fill the vacuum flask before applying the vacuum.)
• The distilland is now sucked into the evaporating flask via the
feed pipe and the flask is immersed in the heating bath. This
is a more environmentally friendly way of filling the flask.

Note:
- Please note that the heating process takes some time.
- Only fine tune the pressure/temperature parameters once the
bath temperature has been reached.
- Please bear in mind that the cooler load must not exceed
approx. 60%. This corresponds to condensation on approx. 2/3
of the cooling coil.
- Adjust the parameters gradually when using unknown solvents
or mixtures.
- When using mixtures of substances, first be aware of the lowboiling solvents and work at a low bath temperature initially.
The IKA RV 05 basic is maintenance-free. It is subject only to the
natural wear and tear of components and their statistical failure
rate.
When ordering spare parts, please give the manufacturing
number shown on the type plate, the machine type and the
name of the spare part.
Please send in equipment for repair only after it has been cleaned and is free from any materials which may constitute a health
hazard. Please tell us if you have used any materials which are
dangerous or which may constitute a health hazard.
Eliminating malfunctions
Use only cleansing agents which have been approved by IKA to
clean IKA devices.
The drive is equipped with an overload protection device that will
turn the device off in the event of a long-term overload (motor
overheating). If the device ie turned off during operation and the
orange glow discharge light on the front of the device lights up,
the drive is overheating.
To remove use:
If the evaporator flask is immersed in the bath, it should be removed from the heat bath immediately by raising the stand. The drive
should be turned off with the On/Off switch and must be left to
cool off for some time.
Important: The device must be turned off to cool down. It will not
turn back on automatically when the motor has cooled of. The
device will not start to run again until it has been turned on again.
If the cooling off phase was too short, the orange glow discharge
light coming on when the device is turned on again will indicate
that the motore is still too hot.
