Interesting facts • The taste of beverages containing coffee depends on the quality of the used coffee or espresso beans. Condition for the aromatic preparation of beverages with coffee is the perfect grinding of the roasted beans as this increases the surface for the contact with water and thus, the release of flavours. • A roasted coffee bean contains more than 1,000 different flavouring substances. The finer the grinding, the more substances are released. 15 • After a few minutes already, the ground powder loses more the 50 % of its flavour. Therefore, coffee specialists recommend storing whole coffee beans and only grinding the quantity just needed. • This appliance has a high-quality conical burr grinder. Thus, whole coffee beans can be ground especially flavour-conserving. The coarseness can be set exactly in several levels from fine to coarse powder. • Different coffee beverages require different coarseness settings; but also the beans’ sort and roasting as well as your personal taste decide on how fine the coffee powder should be ground. Take our recommendations (see below) as basis and try yourself by means of the very flexible setting possibilities until you have found your individual coarseness setting. o Coarse powder is suitable for hand-filtered coffee. o Medium powder is used with usual boiler espresso machines. o Fine powder is suitable for drip coffee makers or for automatic pump pressure espresso machines. o Extra-fine powder is recommended for manual mocha-making. Prior to initial use For a start, please clean the appliance as well as all accessories. For more detailed information please refer to “Cleaning and maintenance”. Operating the appliance WARNING: During operation do not use any object to stir in the beans tank and never touch the running grinding block! WARNING: The appliance is designed for a max. continuous operating time of 2 minutes (2 x 10 doses). If this time has been reached, the appliance has to cool down for at least 2 minutes. If this is not observed, the motor might be damaged! NOTE: The appliance has a safety system. The appliance only works if the beans tank is installed correctly and the powder container (with cover) is inserted completely and locked! • The appliance is not qualified for poppy, nuts, sugar etc.! Non-observance invalidates warranty! • Check regularly if the powder outlet is free from powder residues. The more oil-bearing the used beans, the quicker can the outlet obstruct. • Mind that the taste of coffee/espresso is rated very differently. Take the stated setting possibilities for coarseness and powder quantity as basis and try yourself until you have found your individual taste and the right quantity for preparation. Inserting the powder container • Place the cover on the powder container. • Insert the powder container in the appliance until it latches audibly. Filling the beans tank • Before filling the beans tank it must be installed in the appliance. • Remove the beans tank’s cover and fill in whole, roasted beans. • Afterwards, attach the cover again. 16 Setting the coarseness • The coarseness can be set in 12 levels. • For setting the desired coarseness, hold the beans tank and turn it to position 1 (fine) – 12 (coarse). Observe the marking on the container. Level 1 – 2: extra-fine powder Level 3 – 4: fine powder Level 5 – 8: medium powder Level 9 – 12: coarse powder NOTE: If the tank is already filled with beans, the coarseness should be set at running motor. If there are no beans in the tank or grinding block, the coarseness can be set without running motor. Setting the powder quantity • A powder quantity of up to 10 doses can be ground at once. • Turn the rotary knob to the left (min. 2 doses) or to the right (max. 10 doses) to the desired position. NOTE: The actual powder quantity depends on the used kind of beans, roasting and set coarseness. Switching the appliance on and off • Connect the appliance to the mains. Trouble shooting Overheating protection The appliance has an overheating protection. If the motor is overheated due to too long operation or a blocked grinding block, the overheating protection switches the appliance off. • In this case, pull the mains plug! • Let the appliance cool down for 1 hour, remove foreign objects if necessary. • After sufficient cooling, the appliance can be operated again. Removing foreign objects from the grinding block It might happen that there are little foreign objects (e. g. small stones) between the beans.
