Using the appliance
Filling the water reservoir
1Open the water reservoir lid and fill the water reservoir with cold
water, with the required amount of water.
There are indications for 2 to 12 cups (275ml to 1650ml) on the water
level window and on the jug. You can use these indications to determine
how much water to put in the water reservoir. Keep in mind that amount
of brewed coffee will be slightly less, since ground coffee absorbs water.
Tip: Use the jug to fill the water reservoir with the required amount of water.
Note: Do not fill the water reservoir beyond the 12-cup indication, otherwise
water spills from the opening at the back.
2Close the jug lid and place the jug on the hotplate.
Make sure that the lid is properly assembled onto the jug, otherwise
the jug may not pour properly.
Using coffee beans
Always keep the water reservoir lid closed when you fill the coffee bean
container with coffee beans. Otherwise coffee beans can fall into the
water reservoir and block up the water inlet.
1Press the OPEN button on the right side of the appliance to
open the filter basket holder.
2Place a paper filter (no. 4) or the permanent filter in the filter basket.
10
English
3Remove the coffee bean container lid (1) and fill the container with
coffee beans (2). Make sure there are enough coffee beans in the
container for the amount of coffee you want to brew.
Note: Always make sure the bean container is at least half full.
The maximum capacity of the coffee bean container is 250g. To prevent
the grinder from jamming, do not exceed this amount.
To prevent the grinder from jamming, do not use unroasted or
caramelised beans.
4Turn the grind selection knob to select the desired type of grind;
from fine to coarse. There are nine grind settings.
5To select the number of cups, press the 2-12 CUPS button as many
times as the desired number of cups.
,, The 2-12 CUPS button lights up when you press it.
,, The selected number of cups appears on the display.
,, The grinder grinds the required amount of coffee beans.

button is consistent with the amount of water in the water reservoir. Please
keep in mind that the appliance uses all water in the water reservoir.
6Press the STRENGTH button once or several times until the desired
coffee strength is selected (mild, medium or strong).
,, The STRENGTH button lights up when you press it.
,, The display shows the selected coffee strength.
7Press the START/STOP button to start the brewing process.
Keep away from the steam vent during brewing, as hot steam escapes
through the vent.
,, The freshness indicator flashes on the display until the brewing
process is finished.
,, The coffeemaker produces 5 beeps when the brewing process is
finished.
,, The hotplate switches on automatically.
Do not touch the hotplate while it is on, as it gets hot.
8Wait until the coffeemaker has stopped beeping before you remove
the jug from the hotplate.
English
11
Note: After brewing, coffee drips from the filter basket for several seconds.
,, The freshness indicator is shown on the display for 30 minutes after
brewing, to indicate that the coffee is fresh.
9When the jug is empty, press the START/STOP button to switch off
the appliance and remove the jug from the hotplate.

standby mode after 45 minutes.

steps below.

reservoir’.

open the filter basket holder.
3Place a paper filter (no. 4) or the permanent filter in the filter basket
to collect the ground coffee.
4Press the pre-ground coffee button to switch off the grinder.
,, The button lights up when you press it.
Note:When you switch off the grinder, the number of cups and the strength
setting are not shown on the display.
5Put pre-ground coffee in the paper filter or in the permanent filter.
Note: How much pre-ground coffee you use is a matter of personal taste. For
a medium-strong cup of coffee, use one measuring spoon (approximately 4-5g)
for each cup (125ml).
6Close the filter basket holder and place the jug on the hotplate.
7Follow steps 7, 8 and 9 in section ‘Using coffee beans’.

Descaling the coffeemaker
Regular descaling prolongs the life of the appliance and guarantees optimal

normal use (two full jugs of coffee every day), descale the appliance:
-- 6 times a year (every other month) if you use soft water (up to 18dH).
-- 12 times a year (every month) if you use hard water (over 18dH).

Troubleshooting
This chapter summarises the most common problems you could
encounter with the appliance. If you are unable to solve the problem with
the information below, contact the Consumer Care Centre in your country.
English
Problem
15
The appliance does not work. Plug in and switch on the appliance.
Make sure that the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to
the local mains voltage.
Fill the water reservoir with water.
When I use the grinder, the
coffee is too weak.
Make sure the number of cups you select with the 2-12 CUPS button is
consistent with the amount of water in the water reservoir. Please keep
in mind that the appliance uses all the water in the water reservoir.
Set the grind selection knob to a finer grind setting to obtain stronger
coffee.
Use the STRENGTH button to set the coffee strength to ‘strong’.
When you use coffee beans, make sure you do not press the preground coffee button, as this switches off the grinder.
Use coffee beans of a stronger blend or flavour.
To increase the coffee strength, select a higher number of cups with the
2-12 CUPS button than the number of cups you fill the water reservoir
with.
When I use pre-ground
Make sure the amount of pre-ground coffee in the filter is consistent
coffee, the coffee is too weak. with the amount of water in the water reservoir. All the water inside the
waterresvoir will be used. Please keep in mind that the appliance uses all
the water in the water reservoir.
Use ground coffee of a stronger blend or flavour.
To increase the coffee strength, increase the amount of pre-ground
coffee or decrease the amount of water.
I have set the coffee
strength to ‘strong’ with the
STRENGTH button, but the
coffee is too weak.
When the grinder is switched off, you cannot change the coffee strength
with the STRENGTH button. In this case you can only increase the
coffee strength by increasing the amount of pre-ground coffee or
decreasing the amount of water, or by using coffee of a stronger blend
or flavour.
The filter overflows when
I remove the jug from the
appliance while it is brewing
coffee.
If you remove the jug for more than 20 seconds during the brewing
cycle, the drip stop causes the filter holder to overflow. Also note that
the coffee does not reach its full taste before the end of the brewing
cycle. Therefore we advise you not to remove the jug and pour out the
coffee before the end of the brewing cycle.
The appliance continues to
drip long after the brewing
cycle has ended.
The dripping is caused by condensation of steam. It is completely normal
that the appliance drips for some time.
If the dripping does not stop, the drip stop may be clogged. To clean the
drip stop, push it to open it and then rinse it under the tap.
If you remove the jug for more than 20 seconds during the brewing
cycle, the drip stop causes the filter basket to overflow.
The coffee is not hot enough. Place the jug properly on the hotplate.
16
English
Problem
Possible solution
Make sure that the hotplate and the bottom of the jug are clean.
Use thin cups, because they absorb less  heat from the coffee than thick
cups.
Do not use milk that comes directly out of the fridge.
Descale the appliance. See section ‘Descaling’ in chapter ‘Cleaning and
maintenance’.
