Ethernet networks. Routers – the gateways between Ethernet worlds.
In the field of Industrial Ethernet networks, the topic of data transfer and data
integrity is currently very much on peoples’ minds. It is only recently that user
companies have begun to chew over safety strategies and draw up initial
concepts. Industrial Ethernet is designed to be an open system, but that also
means open to uninvited guests and data. Weidmüller offers Security Routers as
gateways between the Ethernet worlds. They protect independent systems in the
Industrial Ethernet field against unnecessary traffic and use by the unauthorised.
Industrial access routers facilitate simple and safe connections between office
networks or the Internet and production networks. Routers specifically
separate different networks. Access to production networks behind the routers
is granted to authorized users only. Thus, it is possible to conceal connected
plant behind a single IP address. That considerably minimises time and effort
for installation work. Thanks to the integrated modem (analogue or ISDN) the
routers can be accessed via the telephone network from anywhere in the
world for configuration, administration and monitoring purposes. A Virtual
Private Network (VPN) can be created between two routers through the local
Internet provider. Authorised applications only are permissible. An external
modem can optionally be connected to Weidmüller’s routers, for instance a
GSM modem for wireless links.
Routers stand for two typical fields of applications: in addition to providing access
to the Internet, they separate Ethernet networks for reasons of data integrity or
for simpler configuration purposes.
Separating Ethernet networks in the factory
It is true that networks operating in industrial production facilities, in industrial
machinery or in offices use the same Ethernet standard – they are different
nevertheless. Office networks process greater amounts of data in relatively inert
networks – an acceptable condition. Lethargic response times in industrial
networks result in standstill and errors – conditions that are not acceptable under

any circumstances. Although it is not practical to fully isolate the two networks,
the chance has arisen for the first time to exploit one network for all processes.
That increases transparency and equally reduces administrative and technical
outlay. In addition, data exchange is made simpler and it becomes clearly more
efficient. There are different options available to isolate and prioritise network
data, for example VLAN or QoS for layer 2 level. Routers filter data on the IP
level (layer 3). Such routers are extremely effective at reliably separating
networks thanks to features such as firewall, network address translation (NAT),
port address translation (PAT) and remote access via modem. Authorised users
only can gain access to the protected network from outside and only enabled
devices transmit data from within the protected network to the outside. The
NAT/PAT feature conceals a machine with a single IP subnetwork and several
network stations behind a single IP address. External attempts to access these IP
addresses are automatically routed to a predetermined IP address in the network
behind the router. Thus, external access to the device remains possible.
This approach of concealing a machine behind an IP address reduces installation
and administration work for the machine manufacturer. Furthermore, it is possible
to dial up the router via an external modem. That makes it possible to access the
router and the machine behind it – without compromising the company’s network.
Access is made via PPP and PAP protocols or via call-back channelled through a
Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Connection to the Internet
Both Industrial Access routers IE-AR-10T and IE-AR-10T ISDN connect Industrial
Ethernet networks safely and simply to the Internet. This is achieved by means of
the integrated analogue or ISDN modem that provide global application options.
External modems (ISDN, GSM, analogue) are simply connected to the RS232
interface. The systems are reliably protected by an integrated firewall. The
browser, text console or SSH is used for programming / configuration. Laptops or
handhelds can be used for user-friendly convenience. They do not require
separate configuration software as this is already implemented in the device. The
software is upgraded by means of remote access – during teleservicing

procedures. Functions such as VPN, DynDNS and call-back are included as
standard.

Weidmüller’s portfolio of Industrial Ethernet components includes four security
router models – the two Industrial Access Routers ‘IE-AR-10T’ and ‘IE-AR-10T
ISDN’ as well as the two mini routers ‘IE-ARM-E’ and ‘IE-ARM-U’ are destined
for two typical fields of applications: in addition to providing access to the
Internet, they separate Ethernet networks for reasons of data integrity or for
simpler configuration purposes. Both Industrial Access routers IE-AR-10T and
IE-AR-10T ISDN connect Industrial Ethernet networks safely and simply to the
Internet. This is achieved by means of the integrated analogue or ISDN modem
that provide global application options. External modems (ISDN, GSM,
analogue) are simply connected to the RS232 interface. Access to product
networks behind the routers is granted to authorized users only. Thus, it is
possible to conceal connected plant or machinery behind a single IP address.
That considerably minimises time and effort for installation work. Thanks to the
integrated modem (analogue or ISDN, V.34 / 56 Kbps) the routers can be
accessed via the telephone network from anywhere in the world for
configuration, administration and monitoring purposes. The systems are reliably
protected by an integrated firewall. Programming / configuration is carried out
via the browser, text console or SSH secure shell client. Personnel can make
use of laptops and handhelds. They do not require separate configuration
software as this is already implemented in the device. The software is upgraded
by means of remote access – during teleservicing procedures. Functions such
as VPN (Virtual Private Network), DynDNS, Dial on Demand and Call Back are
supplied as standard.
As well as the Industrial Ethernet routers IE-AR-10T and IE-AR-10T ISDN the
product program also includes two mini routers. Compactly designed, the mini
routers are equipped with the following ports: two RJ45s and one RS232
interface (IE-ARM-E) or alternatively one RJ45 and two RS232 interfaces (IEARM-U). A configurable firewall is integrated in both routers. The mini routers
equally support standard functions such as VPN, DynDNS, Dial on Demand and

Call Back.
The housings of the routers IE-AR-10T and IE-AR-10T are made of aluminium
(140 x 44 x 156 mm LxWxH) with those of the mini routers IE-ARM-E and IEARM-U made of plastic (79 x 40 x 85 mm LxWxH). All routers are rated to
protection class IP20. Designed to snap onto TS 35 mounting rails, the
aluminium housing can optionally be fitted to the wall. The mini routers are
designed to snap onto TS32/35 mounting rails.
All four router models are equipped with a redundant power supply (input
voltage 8 - 24 V AC / 10 - 36 V DC redundant). The Ethernet RJ45 is designed
for 10BaseT with maximum segment lengths of 100 m. The routers IE-AR-10T
and IE-AR-10T are equipped with the following LED status indicators: analogue
modem active, Ethernet active, power active, power malfunction.
Correspondingly, the IE-ARM-E router is equipped with LEDs to indicate Power
active and Ethernet active with the router IE-ARM-U equipped with LEDs to
indicate Power active, Ethernet active and modem active.
The following protocols are used: TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, PPP and VPN. VPN is
tunnelled via TCP or UDP. The algorithm Blowfish, an asymmetric 128-bit key,
is used for encryption. The port can be selected freely, with key exchange
taking place automatically.
The firewall is configured via the integrated web browser, either
Telnet or console. Implemented as standard are functions such as Dial-onDemand, Call back, DNS including Reverse DNS / DynDNS, VPN and system
logging. The integrated firewall provides safety through IP Masquerading, Port
Forwarding, Port und Address filters.
All four Weidmüller security routers can be operated in temperatures ranging
from 0 °C to 60 °C and stored at temperatures between –40 °C to +80 °C. The
routers are CE and UL508 approved.

The range of supply of Weidmüller’s Industrial Ethernet security routers includes
software and an installation guide. The routers IE-AR-10T and IE-AR-10T are
supplied with a zero-modem cable.
Weidmüller offers an extensive range of products for implementing solutions
between the sensors/actuators on the field level and the control level. The
product palette includes network infrastructure components for Industrial
Ethernet, SAI Active Universal modules with either PROFIBUS-DP,
CANopen or DeviceNet interfaces, the IP68-rated JACKPAC® signal box as
well as pre-assembled sensor and actuator cables. The new routers are also
a part of this palette of products.

Weidmüller’s managed switches for Industrial Ethernet: managed

Decentralised industrial networks based on Industrial Ethernet require
switches for operative purposes. Managed switches serve as a central switch
in the electrical cabinet – where they are a byword for high performance.
Managed switches structure networks; they optimise the transport paths and
times to regulate network traffic. In this concept, individual network
components are connected hierarchically with one another – more or less in
the form of a physical star structure. A high performance managed switch
represents the central switching point. With its range of managed switches IESWxx-M, Weidmüller has nine variants on offer: three switches respectively
with 8, 16 and 24 Ports (8/16/24 x RJ45). For extremely long transmission
paths and/or environments that experience electromagnetic disturbances
there are two ports for fibre optics (2 x SC and 2 x ST). Up to 24 segments can
be connected – and that with a housing width of just 45 mm. All of
Weidmüller’s managed switches are protocol transparent. Each port creates
its own network segment as well as its own collision domain. These ports can
also be interconnected for increased versatility.
Integrating numerous features, Weidmüller’s IE-SWxx-M managed switches are
robust and reliable. For example the IE-SWxx-M switches are encased in a
sturdy aluminium housing and can be snapped onto TS35 mounting rails or
optionally mounted on the wall to suit requirements. All managed switches are
also equipped with a redundant power supply (input voltage 8 - 24 V AC / 10 36 V DC redundant). The Ethernet RJ45 port is designed for 10 BaseT, 100
BaseTX systems with maximum segment lengths of 100 m (copper). Segment
lengths up to 2 km are possible with fibre-optic multimode cable and 20 km with
single-mode cable (single-mode version up to 120 km on request). The IE
switches are equipped with the following LED operation indicators: data
transmission rate, Ethernet active, power active, temperature monitor. In
addition there is a programmable fault indication relay that signals failures or the

presence of a link at one or several ports. For user-friendly convenience, all
LEDs are on the front of the housing.
IE-SWxx-M managed switches offer even more integrated functions, for
instance, port-trunking, port-mirroring, IGMP snooping and virtual LAN
(VLAN). Vlans are in the main switched networks that bind spatially spread out
nodes to a local network. VLANs combine the advantages of bridges and
routers. Stations ca be added, removed or altered easily. The network can be
structured to suit requirements. Managed switches from Weidmüller support
both ‘port-based VLAN’ and ‘802.1q VLAN’. The function ‘quality of service’
(QoS) allows each Ethernet frame to be assigned QoS priority.
The function ‘browse address table’ displays the corresponding table, thus,
MAC address can also be localised. The ports of the corresponding MAC
addresses are also displayed.
All of Weidmüller’s managed switches can be configured via a RS232 port
using a terminal programme or by using the web interface of the integrated
web browser. That enables users to easily configure switches that are spatially
spread out. The following settings can be made: a.) port status (activate,
block), b.) data transfer rate and duplex transmission (auto-negotiation or
fixed) c.) specified transmission medium (activate or block) as well as d.) the
managed function SNMP with SNMP traps. The SNMP protocol supports
monitoring, controlling and administration of networks. SNMP-Traps are called
messages; these being transmitted if a so-called ‘trap event’ occurs. Managed
switches from Weidmüller support traps for the functions: link-up, link-down,
authentication error as well as coldstart and warmstart. IE-SWxx-M Managed
Switches can also be monitored via SNMP and console menus. Each and
every port is then monitored; the managed switch generates and issues a
detailed ‘port error packets’ statistic. SNMP settings can be stored on a PC
and read out if required.
Two processes are used to achieve redundancy in Industrial Ethernet networks.
Ring topology with ‘RapidRing technology’ and IEEE standard ‘Rapid Spanning
Tree Protocol’ (RSTP, IEEE 802.3w), which is a further development of the
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP, IEEE 802.1d). Weidmüller’s managed switches

support both systems. RapidLink is a simpler, more effective method of creating
redundancy. The RSTP is more sophisticated and suitable for complex
networks.
Each of Weidmüller’s managed switches is designed to be robust and reliable,
a fact illustrated by the high MTBF time of more than 20 years (MTBF = mean
time between failure). All Weidmüller IE switches are built to withstand an
increased temperature range: they can be operated at temperatures ranging
from –40 °C to +75 °C and stored at temperatures ranging from –40 °C to +85
°C.
IE-SWxx-M managed switches are approved in accordance with CE, UL508
and c-UL (GL being prepared).
Weidmüller offers an extensive range of products for implementing solutions
between the sensors/actuators on the field level and the control level. The
product palette includes network infrastructure components for Industrial
Ethernet, SAI Active Universal modules with either PROFIBUS-DP,

Weidmüller’s GPRS alarm modem IE-GPRS-I/O for Industrial Ethernet:
report, inform, remote servicing.
Operating and monitoring highly automated factories is a job for qualified staff.
They require the most modern technology to carry out their work, for example
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). This transmission technology allows
devices to communicate with one another without the need for extensive
cabling. Weidmüller’s GPRS alarm module ‘IE-GPRS-I/O’ monitors plant and
installations, reporting deviations automatically or upon request. The alarm
module does this by sending an SMS to a mobile phone, transmits a fax or
sends an e-mail, if required it can send a voice mail. M2M tariffs promote costefficient solutions. Mechanical and systems engineers are able to access plant
components from anywhere in the world. No matter if calling up data, remote
switching or supervisory remote control – the GPRS module means you are not
bound by location or time and nor are you reliant on the quality of local service
personnel.
The housing of the GPRS alarm module IE-GPRS-I/O is made of aluminium
and rated to protection class IP20. As a consequence, this robust metal
housing offers protection against electromagnetic radiation. In addition, the
concept of this high-quality module features a slim design with a width of just
45 mm (137 x 45 x 155 mm, L/W/H) and can be snapped onto TS 35 top-hat
rails or optionally mounted on the wall to suit requirements. The GPRS module
is equipped with an operating indicator (power active), 4-8 digital inputs and 24 digital outputs, 2-4 analogue inputs as well as an RS232 interface. Each
alarm module is also equipped with a redundant power supply (input voltage 8
- 24 V AC / 10 - 36 V DC redundant).
Weidmüller has fitted out its half-duplex/full-duplex GPRS alarm modems with
extensive features. For example, the GPRS module GPRS/GSM is equipped
with a modem function, meaning an integrated microprocessor with
GPRS/GSM transmission module capable of transmitting information to
technicians anywhere in the world. The GPRS module is configurable. The
modem function makes use of AT commands. Thanks to the integrated RS232

interface it is also possible to gain operative access to plant at any point
across the globe. The GPRS alarm modem can be utilised across spatially farflung distances if data is required from plant components that are not
connected to a telephone system or a network. The GPRS module can be
localised anywhere where reception of a GSM mobile transmission network is
guaranteed.
The IE-GPRS-I/O allows users to create a dedicated line – to make use of one
of the moderate M2M tariffs. To this end, the GPRS module has integrated
web logger and web history functions. A central data logger with a secure
Internet connection saves users from having to fall back on local data loggers.
SMTP, POP3, FTP, DNS, IPTOP and UDP are supported.
The GPRS alarm modem (data transmission rate max. 53.6 Kb/s) monitors the
data volume so that payments are due only for what is used. And added to
that, less data is transmitted quickly thanks to GPRS routing. It also goes
without saying that Weidmüller’s GPRS module is also equipped with a
firewall. That increases safety and data integrity.
Weidmüller offers an extensive range of products for implementing solutions
between the sensors/actuators on the field level and the control level. The
product palette includes network infrastructure components for Industrial

Today Industrial Ethernet is realised with different transmission media, as copper
or fibre optic amongst others. Data transmission rates range from 10 Mbit/s, 100
Mbit/s up to 10 Gigabit/s. Ethernet networks are primary installed with copper-based
twisted-pair lines and RJ45 plugs. This design provokes overvoltages by capacitive

Distant plant devices, which are addressed by Ethernet, are susceptible to
disturbances due to their exposed position. A further disturbance source are
transients, caused by switching operations, often they are the reason for
electronics damages. In switching cabinets or cable trays it is frequently
unavoidable to pass performance-cable parallel to data-cable, this also can
create a potential source of danger. Weidmüller offers some new products for
overvoltage protection for Industrial Ethernet, they are planed for Ethernet
networks Cat. 5 and Cat. 6.
DME100TX-4RJ is Weidmüller’s overvoltage protection module for Ethernet
Cat. 5. This overvoltage protection for the Ethernet Cat.5 is designed as an
adaptor and installed into the circuit near to the device to be protected. The
innovative module ensures a reliable limitation of the interference level. The
connection of the devices to be protected takes place with RJ45 sockets. Fast
reacting suppressor diodes ensure high protection for the signal lines. The PE
connection of the devices is achieved via an M4 screw fixing - with reduction of
potential differences through a gas charge eliminator between ground and PE.
Additionally Weidmüller offers a variant DME 100TX-4 RJ TS 35 for railmounting. The module is crewed to the profile with a mounting base. The
separate wiring of the earthing-conductor is not needed and makes additional
mounting material dispensable. The solution ensures a high-value electrical
contact of the PE connection against the mounting rail. Additionally it offers real
Plug & Play.
Normally an electronic consumer device is connected parallel to at least two
nets, the energy and the information net. The adaptor PU D ZS Cat.6 offers

up to 250 MHz transmission frequency. Weidmüller offers the so-called
overvoltage-adaptor in high protection class IP 20 and IP 67 with connection
technology RJ 45 for protection of Cat. 6 Ethernet cabling in industrial
applications. The 1-step overvoltage protection comes in a JACKPAC® housing.
The variants JACKPAC® OVP Cat.6 IP20 and JACKPAC® OVP Cat.6 IP67
comply with the demands for Class III according to IEC 61643-21.

Weidmüller’s IP65-rated front panel interface builds on standards:
FrontCom® enables communication through the closed front of the
electrical cabinet.
As far as programmable logic controllers (PLC) are concerned, the trend in
the next few years will be towards solutions with more powerful industrial
PCs (IPC) and Soft PLC. The influence of the IT world on automation
engineering is equally encouraging the use of input and output devices
originating from the office world. In this case, access to the PC is gained via
standardised interfaces such as Ethernet (RJ45) and USB in order to
programme and configure the installation. However, IPC interfaces are
contained in the interior of the electrical cabinet – meaning the user always
has to open the cabinet door first before carrying out service tasks. Together
with its customers, Weidmüller has now developed an amazingly simple and
practical solution that enables access to devices inside the electrical cabinet
– without having to open the door. FrontCom® – the front panel interface.
Until now, devices needed to be accessed on the inside of the electrical
cabinet – generally a cumbersome and not entirely risk-free undertaking. Not
with FrontCom®: in a manner of speaking, the front panel interface functions
as a service flap; all common interfaces can easily be accessed from the
outside. A variable level of safety management can be implemented to deny
access to unauthorised personnel.
Designed to meet protection rating IP65, Weidmüller’s front panel interface
is available with a securely closable or lockable cover. That increases
safety levels as required and denies access to unauthorised personnel.
Added to that, FrontCom® is designed for efficiency and openness. It
allows commissioning, servicing and monitoring tasks as well as system
extensions to be achieved more quickly, more simply and more selectively.
And thanks to different adapters, FrontCom® is open for diverse interfaces
with the result it can be utilised for various applications.
FrontCom® builds on standards for the interfaces and provides trouble-free
connection of devices on the inside of the electrical cabinet with

decentralized peripheral devices on the outside. To achieve this FrontCom®
fulfils modular design principles. Different adapter plates support
conversion and upgrade versatility. Weidmüller offers the an adapter (AR
Data) with the following interfaces: USB, RJ 45, 9-pole Sub-D, 25-pole SubD. It also offers a 230-V socket outlet adapter (AR Plug) as well as a
universal adapter (AR) without cut-outs to facilitate individual solutions in
the field. The modular design eases the strain on financial recourses and is
future-proof to boot.
The adapter (AR Data) has a hollow shape by design. This construction
protects the connectors from the connecting cables – even when the cover
is open.
The USB port is predestined to be the interface used when storing extensive
amounts of data or when performing software updates. Today, up to four
gigabytes of data can be read in and out via the USB Memory Stick. The
USB Memory Stick can be utilised when the front panel interface is closed –
safe against manipulation and theft-proof.
Appealing to the eye, all of the various FrontCom® versions have been
designed for use in industry (IP65). The FrontCom® with securely closable or
lockable housing (GH Key, KH Knob) and the adapter AR Data are made from
a robust plastic (PPE) and are grey in colour (RAL 7004) – meaning their
contents cannot be seen from the outside. They conform to flammability class
VO in accordance with UL 94, which means that burning material does not
drip. In addition, the securely closable and lockable covers are resistant to UV
radiation, oil and fuel. The size of the housing cut-out corresponds to HA48
and is thus suitable for heavy duty connectors. The adapter frame for the
supply interface 230-V Schuko is made of stainless steel. The universal plate
without cut-out is made from aluminium and provides the customer with the
option of creating individual solutions in the field.
All front panel interface adapters can be quickly and easily fitted. The
inserts are clamped between the wall of the cabinet and the housing, with

the whole unit requiring just four fixing screws for a secure fitting.
The front panel interfaces GH Key and GH Knob are included in the range of
supply along with the cover, frame, seals, fixing materials, marking tags,
package insert and two keys or interlock. The front panel interface adapter
AR Data contains the housing, USB interface, RJ45 coupling, 9-pole Sub-D,
25-pole Sub-D, marking tags and package insert.
Weidmüller offers an extensive range of products for implementing solutions
between the sensors/actuators on the field level and the control level. The
products include network infrastructure components for Industrial Ethernet,
SAI Active Universal modules with either PROFIBUS-DP, CANopen or
DeviceNet interfaces, the IP68-rated JACKPAC® signal box as well as preassembled sensor and actuator cables. The front panel interface FrontCom®

Weidmüller’s SAI-Active Universal Module with PROFIBUS-DP,
CANopen or DeviceNet switching-on unit offers a unique lighting and
marking concept. Reduced varieties by application-coordinated
modules: 16 DI optional with single channel diagnostics, 16DI to
8DI/8DO with free configuration and an analogue module.
With the SAI-Active Universal, Weidmüller is offering an active
sensor/actuator distributor based on a convincing lighting and marking
concept. The innovative interior lighting makes the addressing space very
visible. Therefore all sensor/actuator connections are fitted with arrow like I/O
LEDs. Thanks to the inner lighted addressing space bus addresses can be
set very precisely. This also renders stations clearly to recognise and
assign; reducing the complexity for start-up and maintenance. Weidmüller
offers its SAI-Active Universal Module with PROFIBUS-DP, CANopen or
DeviceNet switching-on unit – the most commonly used and standardised
field bus systems.

The SAI-Active Universal Modules program includes three I/O variants.

diagnostics input. This complies with the demands of DESINA (DESINA =

production systems). The second SAI-Active Universal Module is equipped
with 16 digital inputs and eight digital outputs. This module allows the user

outputs (8 DI or 8 DO). Two of the outputs can bear 0,5 A, two can handle 2
A, the total current is not to exceed 8 A. Users can configure different
versions: 16 DI, 15 DI and 1DO, etc. The 16DI/18DO module enables four
different separable tension potentials, three for the outputs (bridges with
jumper) as well as one for the input and the module itself. The third SAIActive Universal Module consists of four analogue inputs, two analogue
outputs and four digital inputs. Designed for the following analogue functions:
0…20mA, 4…20mA, 0…10V, -10V…+10V. As apparent, Weidmüller doesn’t
emphasise on a diversity of versions but rather on an optimised functional
variety at each of the three modules.
SAI-Active Universal Modules are equipped with a transparent address top
cover. Underneath the clear cover is the module’s lighted configuration
space. This is a unique feature on the market so far. The lighting indicates
clearly discernible: the module is on and working. Two rotary switches
enable the address-giving for the fieldbuses. Actually 126 addresses
maximum are possible for the PROFIBUS-DP module. The intelligently built
lighting allows spotting the rotary switches more easily as well as setting the
bus addresses precisely.
The module feeding occurs with maximal four different tension potentials. In
addition to the module tension, that also uses the inputs, there are three
feeding points for the outputs. These outputs can be disconnected
individually, according to the application. Two jumpers on the module allow
bridging the potentials. The second feed-in plug can optionally be used as
tension lead or transmitter. Moreover, seven status-displays present
information on tension supply, collective diagnostic and the field buses.
In connection technology Weidmüller sets store by the standardised and
usual in the market connectors M8 and M12. A ring nut and the standardised
assignment ensure connection security and avoid errors in wiring. Each I/O
connection has an arrow-LED to indicate the I/O status. The light conductors,
arranged like an arrow, look towards the connectors and labelling. Thus the
associated marker, lighted by the lighting, is easy and clearly to read. Each

I/O channel has an own marker and there are two markers for the complete
module. Markers can’t be assembled individually on the I/O side; instead
quickly installable strip markers are used. A 40 mm marker is specially tuned
for the SAI-Active Universal Module. Allowing placing even long texts – like
bus addresses – in a visible way. Each pack comprises a Multicard Marker
for self-labelling and printing with the Weidmüller PrintJet.
Two M12 connections for the field bus render the external T-piece
unnecessary. The modules can be interlinked easily. Coding is
standardised: B codes for PROFIBUS-DP and A codes for DeviceNet or
CANopen. Every I/O channel is constantly being checked for errors. When
an error is detected, the optical display placed directly at the connection
shows it. The message is also transmitted via field bus. Additionally to the
single channel diagnostic there is a module diagnostic for overvoltage, shortcircuits, and field bus. This increases the availability of machines and
installations and increases productivity.
All outputs are protected against short-circuits and reverse polarity. High
performance actuators have two outputs that are to operate with max 2A
output power. No special module is needed when an output needs more
power due to the application. The 16DI/8DO module allows the user to
configure it individually according to his applications and choose between
16DI to 8DI/8DO.
The analogue SAI-Active Universal Module is – just like the name says – for
universal applications. With the master’s configuration software users can
easily choose the configuration between current and tension. Weidmüller
Jackpac® can provide further power-on possibilities, like the PT100.
Therefore, Jackpac® modules are screwed between distributor and sensor
reliably dissipating the signal.
2-rowed SAI-Active Universal Distributors are built in a compact way (HxBxT
= 32 x 54 x 210 mm). The two-coloured housing - RAL9005 black and
RAL7032 SAI grey – is designed in the high protection class IP 67 and is

made of PBT plastics. PBT (Polybutylenterephtalat) is thermoplastic
polyester with flammability class UL 94 5VA, which means it is selfextinguishing and burning material does not drip. UL94-5VA is the most
exigent UL-test. For example, no functional damages on the module are
allowed. PBT is oil resistant; hydraulic oil, motor oil or diesel oil don’t corrode
the plastic. SAI-Active Universal Modules are built for harsh industrial
environments, they endure vibrations, shocks and changing temperatures
without harm. Certification for UL 508 is being prepared.
A metal clamp helps to realize a functional grounding at the assembly hole.
Furthermore the screwing point offers room for a round clamping piece
where you can put a conductance. Assembly is easy as there are two
centrally located fixing holes.
The SAI-Active Universal distribution program is ideally rounded up with
wiring and accessories. Not used I/O connections are closed with locking
caps. Exact torque screwing-on the new locking caps is much easier to do
now either manually or with Weidmüller’s Screwty®. Two slots in the modules
are for assembling the caps with a small and a large slot screwdriver. The
special structuring of the protective caps allows them for the first time to be
screwed on manually.
