Warning notice system
This manual contains notices you have to observe in order to ensure your personal safety, as well as to prevent
damage to property. The notices referring to your personal safety are highlighted in the manual by a safety alert
symbol, notices referring only to property damage have no safety alert symbol. These notices shown below are
graded according to the degree of danger.
DANGER
indicates that death or severe personal injury will result if proper precautions are not taken.
WARNING
indicates that death or severe personal injury may result if proper precautions are not taken.
CAUTION
with a safety alert symbol, indicates that minor personal injury can result if proper precautions are not taken.
CAUTION
without a safety alert symbol, indicates that property damage can result if proper precautions are not taken.
NOTICE
indicates that an unintended result or situation can occur if the relevant information is not taken into account.
If more than one degree of danger is present, the warning notice representing the highest degree of danger will
be used. A notice warning of injury to persons with a safety alert symbol may also include a warning relating to
property damage.

Function Manual, 05/2013
Target group
This publication is intended for project engineers, programmers, technologists (of
machine manufacturers), and system startup engineers (of systems/machines).
Benefits
The Function Manual describes the functions so that the target group is familiar
with and can select them. It provides the target group with the information required
to implement the functions.
Utilization phase: Planning and configuration phase, implementation phase, setup
and commissioning phase
Standard version
Extensions or changes made by the machine manufacturer are documented by the
machine manufacturer.
Other functions not described in this documentation might be executable in the
control. This does not, however, represent an obligation to supply such functions
with a new control or when servicing.
Further, for the sake of simplicity, this documentation does not contain all detailed
information about all types of the product and cannot cover every conceivable case
of installation, operation or maintenance.
Technical Support
You can find telephone numbers for other countries for technical support in the
Internet under "Contact" www.siemens.com/automation/service&support.

Frequently Answers and Questions

What is VNCK?
VNCK (Virtual NC Kernel) is a software package that provides a simulated environment of the SINUMERIK 840D sl kernel, allowing developers and engineers to test and debug their applications without requiring a physical machine.
How is the VNCK system architected?
The VNCK system consists of several components, including a VNCK Server that offers interfaces for all commands to the VNCK, and a cross-compiled version of a real target SINUMERIK 840D sl system that handles operation with the kernel. The system also uses several original SINUMERIK 840D sl HMI servers to reduce software development work and ensure correct handling.
What are the different types of VNCK processing?
The VNCK system supports three types of processing: single NCU processing, VPLC processing, and NCU link processing. Single NCU processing controls a single NCU, VPLC processing allows simulation to access and control a VPLC instance inside the VNCK system, and NCU link processing handles link units as control instances of NCU units synchronized via ncuLink.
How can I install VNCK?
You can install VNCK by running setup.exe from the VNCK CD. You can choose to install VNCK with runtime components, OEM/ISV components, or your custom component definition. To uninstall VNCK, use Start → Settings → Control Panel → Add or Remove Programs and choose uninstallation of VNCK V04.05.01.00.
