Contrel RI-R48N Insulation monitoring device Owner's Manual

The Contrel RI-R48N Insulation monitoring device is designed for checking insulation in IT (isolated) electrical networks. It measures voltage variations between two poles and the ground reference, triggering an alarm when insulation drops below a set threshold. With its DIN rail mount and adjustable trip settings, it offers reliable protection for your network.

RI-R48N DEVICE FOR INSULATION PERMANENT CONTROL FOR NEUTRAL NETWORKS (IT)
GENERAL
The RI-R48N allows the insulation monitoring to earth of electric networks in alternate and direct current 24-48
Vac/dc isolated (IT systems).
These devices measure the potential variation of two polarity on earth reference, to signal when the insulation
decreasing under a fixed value. Auxiliary supply is taken from under-control network.
On the frontal panel there is the signalling of device ON, a TEST and a RESET push-buttons and three LED to the
signalling of tripping (TRIP) and to indicate the polarity of the line under control that has low insulation. The
threshold of trip is regulated by a series of micro-switches.
It’s available a changeover contact relay to use the low insulation signalling in a remote panel.
INSTALLATION
The installation must be carried out by qualified and authorized personnel and in absence of voltage. Make sure that
the instrument is O.K. and it has not suffered any damage during transport. Make sure that the voltage supply are
compatible with the operating voltage of instrument.
For each independent line it’s possible to use only one control device.
The device is a 3 modules (17.5mm) DIN version with snap on 35mm DIN rail. It has a sealable transparent frontal
protection cover.
The green LED ON will bright after the connections are set and the instrument is power on.
DESCRIPTION
1. green LED ON, signalling of the instrument
working
2. red LED TRIP, signalling of trip for low insulation,
in manual reset mode it’s necessary to press the
RESET to cancel the signalling
3. red LED TRIP (+ / -), in low insulation status, it’s
the signalling of polarity under the trip threshold in
direct line while both led will be on in alternate
line, functioning in automatic reset
4. TEST button to test the instrument functionality
5. RESET button to cancel the trip signalling
(manual reset)
6. micro-switches to select the threshold of trip
MICRO-SWITCHES SETTING
The frontal micro-switches allow to set the threshold of trip between 10 and 60 k as it’s showed in the following
figure:

LEGEND
Auxiliary power supply
Terminals 1-3
The auxiliary power supply could be the same of the network to control.
Earth reference connection
Terminal 11
Connection to the earth or the protection conductor for measure reference.
Relay output connections
Terminals 7-8-9
To remote signalling by relays with changeover contact max 5A 250V on resistive load.
Remote TEST connection
Terminal 5
For the TEST function it’s possible to connect between this terminal and the ground or protection conductor a
normally open contact TEST button external of the device.
Automatic or remote RESET connection
Terminals 4-12
It’s possible to connect between these terminals a RESET button external of device, with a normally closed contact
to a remote reset function.
Make a short circuit between these terminal for a manual RESET with only the RESET button on the frontal of the
device. If the two terminals are not connected the device will operate with automatic RESET when the low
insulation condition stop.
FUNCTIONALITY
In normal condition, with insulation value higher than the set threshold, the instrument has the green LED on.
Pressing the TEST button the TRIP LED of alarm signalling and the output relay will be activated.
Depending of the connection the RESET will be automatic when the TEST button is released or using a remote
button or manual using the RESET button on the front panel.
If there is a low insulation in a direct line on + polarity (connection to terminal 1) will be activated the TRIP and +
signalling, while the low insulation is present on the – polarity (connection to terminal 3) will be activated the TRIP
and – signalling. In a alternate line all LED (TRIP, + and –) will be turned on. The TRIP signalling will disappear,
automatically or manually with RESET button, only when the insulation come back higher than the set threshold,
while the LED + and – work only in automatic RESET.

Frequently Answers and Questions

What are the possible trip thresholds I can set using the device?
The RI-R48N device allows you to set the trip threshold between 10 kΩ and 60 kΩ using the micro-switches on the front panel. The manual provides a figure demonstrating the settings for each threshold.
How does the automatic RESET function work?
When the insulation value rises back above the set threshold after a low insulation condition, the device automatically resets. This is the default function if the terminals 4 and 12 are not connected.
Can I use the device for both AC and DC networks?
Yes, the device is suitable for both AC and DC networks with a voltage range of 24-48V.
