Precautions
Before using this unit please read these operating instructions care-
fully. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit
itself as well as the safety suggestions listed below.
Afterwards keep them handy for future reference.
1. Power Source—The unit should be connected to power supply
only of the type described in the operating instructions or as
marked on the unit.
2. Polarization—If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power
plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug
will fit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature, If
you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try revers-
ing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electri-
cian to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety
purpose of the polarized plug.
3. Power Cord Protection—AC power supply cords should be
routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by
items placed upon or against them. Never take hold of the plug
or cord if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body
when connecting or disconnecting it.
4. Nonuse Periods—When the unit is not used, turn the power
off. When left unused for a long period of time, the unit should
be unplugged from the household AC outlet.

1. Ventilation—The unit should be situated so that its location or
position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. Allow
10 cm (47) clearance from the rear of the unit.
. Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that objects do not
fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject
this unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or
shock.
. Magnetism— The unit should be situated away from equipment
or devices that generate strong magnetic fields.
. Stacking—Do not place heavy objects, other than system com-
ponents, on top of the unit.
Surface— Place the unit on a flat, level surface.
Carts and Stands—The unit should be used only with a cart or

The unit and cart combination should be moved

Maintenance
Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moist-
ened with mild detergent solution.
Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent
such as alcohol or benzine.

(a) The AC power supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
(b) Objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled into the unit; or
{c) The unit has been exposed to rain; or

Power Sources
A Operating the unit on AC power
Connect the AC power cord.
Conserving power
The unit consumes 3.1W for RX-ES25 and 2.1W for RX-ES20
even when it is tumed off with [EEREON)]. To save power when
the unit is not to be used for a long time, unplug it from the house-
hold AC outlet. Remember to reset the radio stations and any other
memory items before using the unit again if you haven't inserted
memory batteries.
B Using batteries (not included)
Disconnect the AC power cord from the unit to operate on battery
power.
The remote control cannot tum the unit on when batteries are used.
3 Removing the batteries
Open the battery cover, insert a finger into the hole in the bottom of
the unit and push out.
Battery life

Then, the unit turns itself off and displays “U01".
Replace all the batteries with new ones.

You can search for a station by listening to all tuned-in stations for 8
seconds each.
1 Press [TUNER] to select “FM” or “AM”,

Auto scan starts.
3 Press [AUTO SCAN] when you find the desired
station.
Auto scan ends when it reaches the original frequency again.
To stop during the process, press [AUTO SCAN].

reception is weak.

Auto-tuning

starts changing rapidly.
The frequency stops when it finds a station. (Interference may also
cause it to stop. Start auto-tuning again if this occurs.)
To stop auto-tuning
Press [REW / —-/ <td] or Pp / + / FF].

FM: Change the length and direction of the antenna.
AM: Change the facing of the unit.
* AM reception is briefly interrupted if [4 DECK] is pressed.
* To improve reception when using the unit in a building or vehicle,
use it near a window.
To receive FM broadcasts allocated in 0.1MHz
Main unit only
First press [TUNER BAND] to select “AM”, Now, press and hold
[TUNER BAND]. The display changes in a few seconds to show the
current lowest FM frequency. Continue to hold down the button.
The minimum frequency changes and the step is changed at the
same time. Changing the step erases all preset stations.
Repeat the above to change the step back.

You can preset 12 FM and 12 AM stations.

channel (1 to 12).
To enter channel 10, 11 or 12

Selection of tapes
Use normal position tapes to play correctly.
High position and metal position tapes can be played, but the unit will
not be able to do full justice to the characteristics of these tapes.
Cassette tape care
* Tapes exceeding 100 minutes are thin and can break or get caught
in the mechanism.
* Tape slack can get caught up in the mechanism and should be
taken up before the tape is played.
« Endless tapes can get caught up in the deck's moving parts if used
incorrectly.
Tips on Recording
Use household AC power or new batteries when recording to avoid
poor recordings caused by the batteries running down.
Televisions can cause interference to recordings made on this unit
if the two are too close to each other.
Selection of tapes for recording
Use normal position tapes.
High position and metal position tapes can be used, but the unit will
not be able to record or erase them correctly.
Volume and sound quality in recording
* Recording level is set automatically.
« Recording are unaffected by changes to sound quality.

Tips on Recording
A Erasure prevention
The illustration shows how to remove the tabs to prevent recording.
To record on the tape again, cover as shown.
в Erosing recordings
(1) Insert the cassette with the side to be erased facing up.
2) Press [M TAPE/CD] to switch to TAPE mode.
(3) Press [6/11].
Recording CDs
C Normal recording
Preparations:
* Insert a CD (mp page 12).
* Wind on the leader tape.
1 Press [A DECK] to open the deck.
Load a cassette with the side for recording facing up and close
the deck by hand.
2 Press [M TAPE/CD] to switch to CD mode.
Each time you press the button:
TAPE + Cd
3 Press [0/11] to start recording.
CD play and recording start at the same time.
The cassette stops when the CD finishes.
To stop recording
Press [= TAPE/CD].
[A] To pause recording
Press [6/11].
Press again to resume recording.
To continue recording from another CD on the same cas-

(1) Press [4 CD] and replace the CD.

To record selected tracks
Do step EB, then program the tracks (m> page 14).
Press [0/11].
To skip unwanted tracks

(2) Turn [TIME/PRESET TUNE --CD SKIP --] so the next track you
want to record is displayed.
(3) Press [@/11] to resume recording.
| | Recording CDs |
Records the whole CD or selected tracks. When the tape finishes
before CD, recording and CD pauses for you to resume recording on
the opposite side.
Preparation: Insert a CD (mp page 12).
1 Press [M TAPE/CD] to switch to CD mode.
2 Press [CD REC MODE] to display “ALL-REC”.
Each time you press the button:
ALL-REC—> 1-REC — OFF
The display shows the tape length needed.
“С — — — —" indicates the tape needed exceeds 100 minutes.
You can still record, but some tracks may not be recorded if the
tape isn't long enough.
3 Load a cassette with the side for recording facing

4 Press [6/11] to start recording.
The unit rewinds the tape, records 10 seconds of silence, and
then starts recording.

The Play and Record Timer

You can set the timer to come on at a certain time to wake you up
{play timer) or to record a radio station (record timer).
Preparations:
Turn the unit on and set the clock. (= page 9)
* For play timer, prepare the music source (tape/CD/radio) for lis-
tening, and set the volume.
* For record timer, check the cassette’'s erasure prevention tab (wb
page 16: EI) and load the cassette with the side for recording facing
up. Tune to the radio station (= page 10 to 11), and set the volume.

Press [CLOCK/TIMER] to select the desired timer
function.
Each time you press the button:

The record timer comes on about 30 seconds earlier than the
set time,
To cancel the timer
Press [OPLAY/REC] when the unit is on to clear the timer indica-
tors from the display.
(The timer comes on at the set time everyday if the timer is on.)
To check the settings (when unit is off)
Press [CLOCK/TIMER].
The settings are shown in the following order:
Start time, Finish time —> Music source — Volume — Original display
To change the settings (when unit is on)
To change the times
Do steps EJ, PJ, El, and El.
To change the source or volume
1. Press [DPLAY/REC] to clear the timer indicator.
2. Make changes to the source or volume.
3. Do steps El to EJ.
You can enjoy your desired source after you have set the timer.
Turn the unit off before the timer's start time.
The play and record timers cannot be used together.

Make sure the unit is off before the play/record timer's start time.

To clean this unit, wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
M the surfaces are extremely dirty, use a soft cloth dipped in a soap-
and-water solution or a weak detergent solution.
« Never use alcohol, paint thinner, or benzine to clean this unit.
+ Before using chemically treated cloth, read the instructions that
came with the cloth carefully.

Clean the heads after every 10 hours of use to assure good quality
playback and recording.
